station. coverage live in braintree. with a passenger onboard at the time. >> reporter: we did, sarah. that passenger tells us they got on to that red line train here at braintree just around 6:00 this morning. with no indication that there was anything wrong and no indication that there was no operator. they said they got onboard, the doors closed and the train took off as it normally would in the morning. they said it wasn't until they got to quincy that all of a slow down. the lights began to dim. and then they were stopped. they said the problem was they had no idea what was going on. they didn't know if the train was disabled. that is when some of the passengers obviously, became a little bit antsy. they were trying to get off the train. trying to figure out what was going on. the passengers in the car closest to where the operator should have been, they realized there was no conductor onboard. they said after about 30 minutes, that is when another "t" operator came on without saying exactly what had happened. took all of those passengers
12:02 pm
at that point, those passengers were given no explanation of what had happened. you can imagine how frustrating that was for the passengers waiting. . >> everything was normal. nothing unusual. when i arrived, i arrived here around 5:53 in the morning. because i pay the parking. everything was normal. the first train that was on the right side left. we went to the train on the left side. nothing unusual. nothing... it was really, really weird. it was really confusing. everything was dark. everything was stopped. and we were trying to open the doors. we couldn't. we were trying to press the buttons to the emergency room. and nobody heard. and the people on the first car were trying to knock on the door of the conductor. that is when we discovered there was nobody there.
12:03 pm
>> we were trying... my only concern was people trying to open the train when we didn't know what was going on. >> as it was moving? >> no. when it was stopped. people were trying to breaking the windows so we could get out. which i was not going to do. i don't know if, you know, the line is on and off. some people were trying to break the windows. most of the people were trying to open the doors. and some other people were just trying to call and see what's going on. people called the m.b.t.a. to say what happened. we really didn't hear anything. i just decided to be quiet and you know, i don't understand anything about trains. i'm not going to try to do anything. >> reporter: so obviously, the m.b.t.a. is trying to figure out exactly what happened. he said they are looking into the possibility as to whether or not this train may have been tampered with.
12:04 pm
sources, when officers responded this morning, they responded to somebody hurt on the platform hit by a train. that was obviously the operator who should have been onboard that red line train. now, what we are hearing is that the operator's account is that they were trying to manually switch one of the switchers that the train when the train took off and the operator was hit. we are trying to confirm. that to see, in fact, if that is what happened. we will continue to follow the story throughout the day. the m.b.t.a. saying passenger safety is of the utmost importance. and no passenger were hurt. again, it is going to be continued to be investigated. we are live from braintree, 7 news. is now at a rail yard in dorchester. byron barnett is live with more. byron? >> reporter: yeah. we are at the cabot yard where the train has been for quite a while now. take a look at it sitting right here. this is the six-car red line train, sitting here in the cabot yard.
12:05 pm
it is not much activity here. there had been a number of investigators on the scene within the past hour or so. if you look closely, you can see all the doors of the cars are open. we don't know what that signifies. perhaps this is the way the train was when people got off. perhaps this is what the investigators were looking at. this yard is where all the buses and the trains have maintenance performed. and there is training here as well. in addition to the investigators, the maintenance people, if you swing the camera a little bit further, you see a couple of officers. transit officers standing here. the police are here as well. police investigators, maintenance people, all going over this train, trying to figure out what happened here. was this some kind of operator error or was there something else. right now it is pretty quiet here. as you can see, the train is just sitting in the cabot yard, pretty much just waiting here to see what the investigators

not much activity right now. it is train is secure while investigators try to figure out exactly what happened to cause this train to take often and... on its own. i'm byron barnett, 7 news. >> christa: the boston f.b.i. office is confirming that they are aware of what happened. they are in contact with transit police. for the latest on this, let's head live to dorchester. you see 7's dan hausle. dan, what's happening there? well, a lot of the passengers originally got off here the first time the train stopped and then was brought into this station. but the investigation being handled by the m.b.t.a., but we are getting some happened from the governor's office. originally, the m.b.t.a. was telling us that a safety system on the train had been disabled. that left room for... was it disabled intentionally or not.
12:07 pm
the governor's office confirming there was tampering with controls on the train. and they say these trains are there is no driver. a lot of passengers asking us about a dead-man switch that wouldn't allow the train to operate, and the governor's designed not to operate if there is not a driver there. something was changed. the governor's office says they were tampered with. the f.b.i. also looking in on this. right now an m.b.t.a. investigation. the f.b.i. says they are monitoring this situation. this comes as we get a statement from the m.b.t.a.'s general manager in which he says, "passenger safety is the highest priority for the m.b.t.a., and this highly troubling incident is under investigation by transit police detectives. " a spokesperson for the governor saying governor baker is grateful no passengers were incident. and will be monitoring the investigation closely. so again, you have the m.b.t.a. taking the lead here. the investigators looking into

there at this station. leaving so many people frightened. let's listen. ff. >> good afternoon. so i think as many people know, there was a train that left braintree this morning that was unmanned. the passengers were let off. thankfully, nobody was hurt. the trainitte... itself, it was determined that it was unmanned and traveling from braintree within a couple of minutes when it left, the power on the third rail was shut off at that point in time. the train koersed because it had momentum at that point forward. through several stations before it came to a stop. inspection of the train determined that some of the controls had been manipulated. and there is an ongoing investigation right now that involves folks from the m.b.t.a., from d.o.t. and public safety. from what we can tell at this
12:12 pm
isolated incident. >> governor, is the f.b.i. involved in the investigation, to your knowledge? >> to my knowledge at this point, they are not involved. i believe it is public safety, d.o.t., and the m.b.t.a. >> you said this morning it was tampered with. >> manipulated, tampered with. it is pretty clear that it was set in forward motion which is why it moved in the first place when the signal was manipulated. but as i said, within a couple of minutes of it leaving, the third rail was turned off and it coasted through several stations. >> the motor man, what was his role, to the best of your knowledge? it was explained to me that he detected something wrong with the train, got out to check it,. was wrong. he got out to check the signal. then it went forward. -last question. >> did he have something to do
12:13 pm
>> the investigation will involve questions. they will talk to others as well. i don't want to draw conclusions about that until the investigation is a little further along. this? are people safe? >> look, as i said, at this point, we believe this is an isolated incident. and i think the system overall is running on normal schedule and a normal way. this particular incident is being investigated on its own. but as i said, within a couple of minutes that, train leaving the station, they cut the power and it coasted until it stopped. >> to your knowledge, is it conceivable, governor, that this person put something in gear and said, i better get... and made a mistake? >> i don't want to get too hypothetical about this. i think the big question at this point, that you are one. you know, the discussion that's going to take place on negligence versus something else.
12:14 pm
>> is tampering a question? >> it is pretty clear the main control that drives the train was tampered with. but as bill just said, i think the big issue on this is whether it was a negligence issue or something else. >> thanks, everybody. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> christa: looks like the headline coming out of this here is that the governor has been kept aware of the situation on the red line earlier today. and it looks like at this point, this is an isolated incident. that this was perhaps a case of negligence, that he was talking about. just to bring you up to speed if you are just joining us. this happened earlier today when this train that you are looking at left the station on its own. without a driver. nos one operating it. the big question here, why, how, how did this happen? he does say it appears the controls had been manipulated to. what end? and why?

him. good afternoon, everybody. >> sarah: we have team 7 coverage of this breaking news story. of course, the red line train departed inbound from braintree station around 6:10 this morning. it passed by several stops. crews eventually killed the power to the third rail and got it to stop at north quincy station. nicole oliverio begins our coverage live in braintree. nicole, you spoke to a passenger who was onboard during really all this chaos. >> reporter: sar frarx you can imagine, you know if you are taking the "t," you are getting ready to go to work. 6:00 is a popular time for everybody to be getting on the train. many people aren't paying attention to whether or not there is an operator onboard. you would assume there is a this passenger we spoke with says she got on to the red line train here at braintree. she says it took off without any problems. there was no indication that there was anything wrong. she said it wasn't until they got to the quincy area that the train began to slow down.
12:30 pm
and passengers were wondering what was going on. now, they were sitting without any word of what was happening for about 30 minutes. she said it wasn't until the passengers who were closest to where the operator would be leaned over to ask what was going on and realized there was no operator. she says after about 30 minutes, someone from the m.b.t.a. did show up and that's how they managed to get to the j.f.k.-umass station. when they got off, they were not told what happened. they had no idea this had anything to do with a disabled train or what was going on. it was really only those passengers at the front who noticed that there was no so passengers, of course, frightened... one woman talk about what it was like inside the train when all of this was going on. >> everything was normal. nothing unusual. when i arrived... i arrived around 5:53 in the morning. i pay the parking. everything was normal. the first train that was on

12:32 pm
and some other people were just trying to call and see i know people called the m.b.t.a. to say what happened. we really didn't hear anything. >> reporter: the latest from governor charlie baker, he believes the train was tampered with and that's why it was able to take off without the operator. as officers responded this morning, they only responded to hear that somebody was hurt on the platform. they later realized it was the operator. now, according to our sources, the operator's story is that he had to manually fix that problem. the operator claims that that's when the train jerked forward and took off. again, governor baker says they are investigating because it seems as though the train had been tampered with. now, who did that and exactly what happened and was it intentional? that is all going to be investigated.
