>> man: we knew we had peoples' lives at stake. one of the man on the rescue talks about stopping the run away train. when that red line train took off without a driver last week. >> tonight, one of those workers is talking about the frightening work on the rails. >> reporter: guys, when the nbj operation center was told there was a run away track with no conductor on board, they knew they had to act fast. this is a situation unlike anything they've experienced. luckily for the 50 passengers on board, they were up to the task. stopping a run away train in a matter of minutes meant there was no room for error. >> man: we can't allow failure in this situation because we had lives at stake. >>. >> reporter: he told us how he and a co-worker came up with a plan to stop the train before

>> man: when he showed me what he had, it was a whole other ball game. >> reporter: they couldn't just cut the power because it could hit another train so they moved the trains up and then cut the power. >> man: we couldn't cut them all otherwise this one would be dead in the water. it was tricky. >> reporter: they were honored today by the governor for quick action. the driver is under investigation as he tied a cord to the throttle. there was a displan disciplinary hearing held with him absent because of a medical problem. no one was hurt thanks in big part to mcneil who says in all his time here, he's never been

sunshine. but the winds start cranking early in the day and they go all day. there's a lot of mild air around and plenty of drizzle and fog and now we're going into rain but a dense fog advisory still up. our temperature going up too. it's been real. we did hit 62 in providence, set a record, yes, at night. the last couple of hours, now down to 59. we expect temperatures to continue to rise into the low 60s and those will be the highs for the day tomorrow morning. we'll talk about that ahead. also from the night team, a five-year-old boy left behind on a bus on the way to school. tonight, we're learning about the serious charges that driver might face. you have the 911 call that were made when the boy was found. >> reporter: that's right.

reckless child endangerment but police say he's also looking at a citation to not getting the bus properly inspected. it all started with a 911 call, repeating what the lawrence chief of police confirms. >> man: observed a five-year-old child, male, left alone on the bus. >> reporter: he says it was early monday morning when the call came in. the child's parents were able to pick him up unarmed after he was left alone for 45 minutes. >> man: it's something you can't characterize as an oversight. >> reporter: it's a bus similar to this one, the woman accused of the bus driver's sister, they run independently of the school and she can't speak for him. the driver is facing a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment and a citation for failure to do an inspection. >> man: it's required by law to

>> man: we're going to make sure as these third party vendors are doing business, that our parents are informed. >> reporter: this is not an arrestable offense. so this man will appear in court for the coming weeks. police say they're working to revoke his license. that's the story live from lawrence jury deliberations are underway for the phillip chism trial. they find him guilty but he was insane when he raped and killed his teacher. the experts say there is no evidence that he suffered from psychotic breakdown at the time. >> woman: the evidence is clear that he suffers from a psychotic disorder. >> woman: phillip knew right from wrong and could choose right from wrong. he did it repeatedly over the

>> deliberations will start up again first thing tomorrow morning when the jury reaches a verdict. we'll keep you updated on air and onne. police are making a public plea for help to track down a hit and run driver. 78-year-old acuno died last night after someone hit her with a car on december 3rd. police say that driver stopped briefly after the accident to check his car and then people just saw him leave that area. driver didn't do anything to help the woman. you know? i mean how could he live with himself? >> man: it does make it more tragic and i don't understand why someone would leave a human being laying in the middle of the road. >> police say she did ignore a no walk sign when she was hit. still, any information about the driver who left the scene is asked to call police.

america runs on dunkin'. a family is calling their mail carrier a holiday hero after he stopped with the thieves. he even helped police track them down after chasing them out of the neighborhood. >> the family has a special message for the family who say he saved christmas. >> reporter: apparently these teens started here in the family's shed where they rummaged through until they found a hatchet. they started hacking away, they trim. then they went for the lock and you see the wood splitting here, that's ul until the mailman came around the corner. >> man: they were trying to here. >> reporter: shredded in some places but it wasn't this bar

garden and the dates are september 14th and 15th and the tickets go on sale this thursday at 10:00 a.m. everyone is going to be standing in line between adele and star wars tickets. all right, tis the season for holiday helping. we're whipping up our favorite holiday recipes. >> for our recipe, new mom, sara french and making breakfast casserole. >> hi, everybody, welcome to our home. our family has grown a little bit since last year. this is baby blair, my husband chris and of course, buddy. behind us is my mom. we're making her sausage and egg casserole. it's our family tradition to have it every family morning. can't wait to show it to you so let's get cooking. what's the first thing we need to do? >> woman: crack the eggs in the bowl.

as brady looks forward, he sees julian coming back as well. >> man: i know he's working hard to get back. i don't know what the timetable is for the team to come back. he's attacked it like he attacks everything else. i'm excited to get him back out there to join the other guys who have done a great job in his absence. the patriots defensive captain left last night's game in the third quarter with a sprained ankle. but according to reports, the injury will not end his season. the brewins took 29 shots tonight. they just couldn't put the puck in the net. down 2-0, late in the second. brewins in the come back. matt cuts down the wing and sneaks the puck short side. it was a 2-1 game.

skating across the blue line, and snaps that nasty wrister tying the game at 2. sends this game to overtime. but just 41 seconds into the extra session, andre follows his own shot here and pots the rebound as tory gets tangled up and the oilers snap the brewins two game winning streak 3-2 in the overtime magic visiting brooklyn. they take it right to the rack and throws down the slam earning our play of the day. and despite a plea for reinstatement, pete rose will baseball.
