tomorrow dry. so i've we have that evening rain and fog overnight tonight. colder over the weekend. seasonable levels but a mainly dry weekend ahead. i can't rule out a risk of a passing snow flurry or snow shower on saturday. we'll talk more about the christmas week forecast coming up. >> following breaking news out of middleton right now where crews are battling a large house fire. this is on hudson street between blue hill avenue and blue hill parkway. no word on injuries right now, but emergency responders are there on the scene. police say traffic detours are set up in that area. >> and we're following more breaking news here at 6:00. live in boston with the changes just made to the smoking age. susan? >> elizabeth we just heard now that the boston folks will have to be 21 to buy cigarettes here in the commonly wealth and the city joins roughly 80 others along the commonwealth to raise that age and it just happened inside of this

>> and after a presentation inside of the boston -- inside the boston public health commission's meeting, they had a lengthy presentation about the reasons why they want to raise the age from 18 to 21. they took that vote and it became unanimous that you will have to be 21 to buy cigarettes here in boston, and that includes e-cigarettes as well as flavored tobacco. and there were many reasons and one of the main ones being that there is just no safe dosage for cigarettes. but there were plenty of opponents that were inside the room as well, and they say if someone who is 18 can go to war, fight for their country and vote for the president, cigarettes. >> i think what this really does is acknowledges the really danger of tobacco products and acknowledges that there is no safe dose or use of tobacco. it's actually really the only consumer product that doesn't have

>> this is simply a way to harass adults smokers and the stores that depend on them. the small businesses. >> so again the age limit has been raised from 18 to 21 here in boston. if you want to buy cigarettes and this new regulation takes effect in 60 days. we're live in boston, susan tran, 7news. >> also on 7. today a new hampshire high school stops the music. exeter high school banning dances. he says he's doing this to protect his students. byron barnett live at exeter high with the high profile trial that pushed the principal to make this move. byron? >> that's right. you know, school officials here next terrible have been concerned about this for years now. they say there's a lot of inappropriate activity going on at school dances, so they wanted to take action before someone gets hurt. >> i think it's pretty outrageous. >> students at exeter new hampshire high school reacting to the news that most school dances have been

school officials say the main reason is the inappropriate dancing such as grinding and mosh pits. >> 100 to 200 kids that get together and it gets into an unsafe situation when you have that many kids all in close like that. >> that's kind of what this world has come to. i feel like taste that's an acceptable way people are dancing now. >> school officials also cite the recent case of owen labrie, the former student at spawls school in new hampshire who was convicted of classmate. the superintendent says that that was the tipping point for him. >> we have not reached the level to my knowledge that happened at spawls, but it was along that path, and i wanted to be responsible. >> that's awful, but it didn't happen here. and one again, we've been taking strides for that not to happen. but while there's been some grumbling, many students say they saw this coming. >> it was kind of an inevitable thing that was definitely going to come at only point, especially with all the recent cases going on.

one has been physically hurt by the inappropriate behavior, many students have suffered emotionally. they say the only dances allowed in the future will be the junior and senior proms. >> students seem to behave better. i'm not sure it's because they dress up more appropriately, they're far more adults around. >> school officials here say this action isn't all that unusual. they say that many schools, most of the schools they know of, the high schools have already discontinued the school dances and they say one of the problems is that parents and teachers do not want to chaperone. live from new hampshire, i'm byron barnett, 7news. >> we're following more breaking news tonight. a friend of the couple behind the san bernardino shooting allegedly purchased the guns used in the massacre that killed 14 people. he is federal terrorism charges. 7's ryan schulteis with the

one of the -- spoke about conducting their own terror attack back in 2010 but called it off. marquez was also charged with illegally purchasing two assault rifles used by sayed farook and his wife to kill 14 people at a holiday gathering there on december 2nd. officials say marquez told them he did it as a favor for his long time friend and former neighbor sayed farook so that farook would not have to go through a background check. the couple who carried out the terrorist attack. the bodies were released to the family members and buried on tuesday. attorneys for the family are not releasing any other details. officials say farook and his wife haven't been linked directly to a terror organization, but they had been talking about jihad online together even before they met. tomorrow obama plans to meet with the families of the victims there in san bernardino. >> 7news now turning to a second arrest in the home invasion in quincy. police say william mack enis accused of threatening a pregnant woman at gunpoint.

broke into the home earlier this month and police say they tied her up before demanding money and got away with $40,000 in cash. >> a starbucks save in brookline witnesses say a starbucks worker found a guy collapsed on the ground on his way to work. well, he called for help, stayed with the men. it turns out both men are major coffee competitors. tonight. >> vegan street is awfully busy right now. a much different story at 4:00 in the morning. so when a man was coming to work to open up this dunkin donuts passed out in the middle of the street thought he would be there for hours. >> you would think the employees would be enemies, but when you work at 4:00 in the morning you share a somewhat special bond. >> we usually say, hi, how's it going, what's going on? friday morning derrick moore was on his way to his job at dunks.

two blocks go bay -- by and it's like i can't even breathe. the doctor said i have pneumonia, and while i was asleep all the fluid had built up in my lungs so when i lifted up to go get up it all went inside mailings. >> a man who works at starbucks saw help. inhaler. >> i was waving had i hands at him, he knew something was wrong. he came over and he was like, hey, are you all right? and i'm like, i don't have any air left. i couldn't say anything. i'm waving at him him and i guess he called the police. >> three cop cars showed up. one of the guys had medical training of sort. he had his own mini oxygen. she gave derrick oxygen and waited for the ambulance to arrive. >> moore doesn't even want to imagine what would have happened if the rival barista didn't spot him. >> god only knows. it was only 4:00 in the among.

that airs tonight right here at 7:00 in 3d. many theaters you're going to have to leave your light sabers at home, that's because theaters are upping security. theaters like regal and isn't mark telling patrons that costumes are okay, but no masks, face paints or weapon like props allowed. amc theaters, they're a little more lenient, they put out a policy that said that guests are welcome to come dressed in costume but we do not permit masks or face paint. in short bring your light saber, turn it off during the movie and leave the blast examiner darth vadar mask at home. of course for "star wars" fans this lives. >> we've been waiting a really long time, sorry, george, but, you know obviously the last three didn't quite make us feel like we were five the way we did when -- in the early '80s. so most of our adult lives have

they decided as the cue data approached if this baby was born on the opening date for the "star wars" movie it would have to be a sign and they would in fact name the baby jedi, at least the middle name. so it is an exciting day in winchester. >> he's the bay state's newest jedi. all 7 pounds 11 ounces of him. with the seventh installment of the "star wars" saga revving up fans nationwide, it is a birth to remember. >> it went really really well. >> you did a beautiful job. >> this young ling middle name is jedi. he came into the world at 8:37 this today "star wars: the force awakens" opens in boston and nationwide. >> here we are. >> yeah.

now 7 weather with meteorologist chris lambert. >> plenty of rain-out there all across eastern mass and stretching all the way to the sea coast of new hampshire and take a look down into

all green there. out the mass pike as well, out through worcester and back through southeastern mass and check out some of these yellows showing up on the radar down across eastern con and over to rhode island. this is some steadier rain that's going to work through southeastern mass over the next couple of hours. seeing the height of this over the next two or three hours. so far how much rain has fallen, a couple tenths of an inch. not a tremendous amount, but when it coincides with the evening down. 53 degrees in boston. low to mid 50s down through southeastern mass and some cooler weather in northern new hampshire. some of that cold air, a little tough to scour out there. taking a long look of the trail of moisture all the way down into florida, this is the front that's going to have to slide off to the east tonight and there's going to be one more wave of low pressure that rides up along it and we'll rate it with a couple of isolated showers tomorrow. especially down through southeastern mass. here is the cold air entering the great lakes.

effect snow machine over the weekend. especially on saturday, down wind of the great lakes picking up locally one 4th of july to two 4th of july of snow. for us i don't expect much snow at all. we may get a passing snow shower or snow squall in the western hills. that will be in the higher terrain of new england. even in the city of boston. i can't rule out a passing flurry or snow shower on saturday. but much of the time just featuring a mixture of clouds and second down. 38 to 46 overnight tonight with areas of rain, even close to 50 tonight down across the cape. tomorrow temperatures running into the mid 40s to near 50 degrees with that isolated shower midday into the early afternoon. especially down through southeastern mass. what about any cold air? we're not going to see it once we get beyond this weekend. in fact christmas week featuring plenty of mild air.

you just have to speak up. speak how you're feeling and just they them know and just so everyone is on the same page and everyone could work around with it and see where you're at. >> the patriots will get their first look at marcus mariota this sunday, the second overall pick this this year's past has shown flashes of brilliance with his arms and legs. he's completed over 62% of his passes. and he's also averaged 7.4 yards per carry on the ground. impressive numbers that have caught the attention of the pats defense. >> he's a guy that's really fast. he can get out of the pocket, extend plays and he's got a great arm so we definitely have to prepare well as a defensive lineman to keep track of where he's at. i think he's doing well. they have a lot of confidence in him. he's shown toughness coming back from an injury and taking some hits and all like every quarterback does.
