>> this is 7 news at noon. >> new england bracing for its first storm of the season. a winter weather advisory is up. it looks like we will be seeing a little bit of everything. headed our way. overnight. then we will see a changeover just in time for the morning commute. bri eggers tracking it all. >> bri: nancy and sarah, really, it's because it is the first that we have seen. that always takes some getting used to. learning how to drive on slick spots again. we are getting used to the cold temperatures today. this is quite a shock to the system. when you are coming off of christmas eve and christmas

a wind out of the north, northwest. it feels like it's 19 in worcester. feels like it is in the 20's in boston, bedford, norwood. hopefully, you got that big jacket for christmas. we have some sunshine out there. don't let it fool you as you look out the window. you will want to bundle up. this is the start of it. the cold temperatures really setting the stage for that winter weather to move in for us. here is that monster storm. amazing when you think how far it is from us. looks like it is just moving to the north. we get a front that sneaks in overnight tonight. and that couples with the cold air that is already in place. we start off with snow. working through the timeline, looks like about midnight to 3:00 a.m. that is when the snow gets going for most places. and in between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m., it changes over to a wintry mix. not a lot of snow on the on-set. this is really the big concern here. we are talking sleet and freezing rain making for icy conditions on roads. just in time for the morning commute. now, we do see that milder air

so this will melt everything and into a slushy mess. turning over to some lingering rain showers. as we work into the evening commute. winter weather advisory goes tonight. p.m. tomorrow. that is when we expect that rain to be changed over to rain for most places. now, how much snow, again, these totals not very high. i would really say three inches rather than five, one inch rather than three for most areas. you get that sleet and the freezing rain on top of the snow. it makes for a compacting situation. and it really weights down that snow. again, melting in the way for us for the afternoon. making for a slushy mess. we have more details on the storm system here in the extended forecast in a few minutes. >> a lot of people getting ready for the storm today. making sure they have their ice-melt on hand as we await our first flakes of the season. >> work crews are getting ready for whatever will come our way.

jennifer eagan and kris anderson in weston. the salter are filling up today for tomorrow's commute. let's begin there with kris. they are ready to go. right? >> christa:... ... >> let's face iting it is not going to be the biggest winter storm that we have seen. what it is going to do is provide an opportunity for these road crews to get back into the swing of things, scoop up some of this sand and get those mixtures out on the roadways. because it's been a relatively mild winter. it's been a december to remember. thanks to mother nature's relatively mild temperatures this month. but... >> get ready for the winter. because it's coming. >> reporter: and coming soon. the first winter storm of the season is headed our way. while it won't be a monster storm, it is still expected to deliver measurable snowfall tuesday. that could cause problems on the roadways. state highway engineers are ready.

loads of deicing liquid. d.o.t. officials will hit the roads later today to start treating the roads with the salt and deicing liquid to get a jump on all the snow. >> i say bring it. >> reporter: new englanders are also getting ready. visiting local stores to stock up on necessities like shovels, sand, and ice melt. >> this warm weather is nice. it is new england. we need the cold. we need a little bit of snow. nothing like last year. and i'm ready for it. >> last year, we sold out of stuff very quickly. this time, we are fully prepared. we have plenty of stock. we are ready to go. >> reporter: plenty of stock in the stores. plenty of salt here at the weston depot. we have two big piles of salt over there. some of the liquid mixture as well that they have to treat the roadways. when the snow, sleet, slush and all of that starts falling, the roads are better equipped to handle them.

weston, 7 news. >> a lot of concern with how to m.b.t.a. will handle the first storm of the season. governor reassuring everyone the steve on track. jennifer eagan continues our coverage live from boston. >> reporter: good afternoon. officials knew they had to make some changes heading into this winter. they say they are ready. if you ride the "t" and were in boston when winter weather hit earlier this year, you were remember the headaches. long delays on the commuter rail. frozen tracks. one storm that shut down the m.b.t.a. entirely. >> we expect tomorrow will be a normal day, providing normal services. of course, it is going to be winter weather. >> reporter: the "t" has spent months winterizing the system. hoping to prevent a repeat. that included replacing ten miles of the third rail on the problematic red line and putting third rail heaters on some of the orange lines. >> we always knew it was a multi-year effort. we accomplished everything

wanted to get done this year. we are comfortable going into this winter where we are. >> reporter: the "t" will use rail. >> the "t" had never used that chemical before in any previous winters. so this is something we have implemented as part of our review of last year. >> reporter: tomorrow's storm won't measure up to the weather that caused major issues last february and march. but it will give "t" a warm-up as winter gets under way. >> we have done a ton of work to prepare for the winter. i anticipate that that work will be put to good use. starting tonight. >> reporter: one of the challenges with the commuter rail last winter, 40 locomotives not in service because of various issues. those are back in service now. jennifer eagan, 7 news. >> sarah: join us tomorrow morning. we will have complete storm-force coverage. j.r. and bri will be tracking the storm as it moves.

in the field bringing you the we get started tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m. police in malden searching for the driver behind a deadly hit-and-run. >> reporter: malden police say they have found a vehicle after a hit-and-run out here on this street. here in the 500 block of pleasant street in malden, police say a woman was hit by a car sunday night with the driver taking off. according to the middlesex district attorney's office, the 71-year-old woman was killed. >> i saw the policewoman. i said, what's going on?" she said, "you know, an accident. i was wondering why all the police for just an accident. >> police are going door to door asking if anyone has seen anything. >> they found the vehicle monday morning but did not mention if an arrest has been made.

by what happened but not surprised. they say this is the heavy traffic area where people are known to speed. especially after a speed bump was taken out. >> because they see a green light, they step on the gas to try to make the light. it is quite hazardous here. >> it is crazy here. they speed really. this is like a drag strip here. >> reporter: the d.a.'s office says this is an active investigation. live in malden, 7 news. >> a man is? custody after police say he crashed his car into a cafe. the driver took off after barreling right through that he is now facing serious charges. nicole oliverio is live from lynn with more on this story. >> reporter: and that 18-year-old driver will go before a judge later this afternoon. if i step out of the way, crews have been working to board up the side of the cafe all morning long.

care inside the walnut street cafe. the front of the building is smashed-in. broken bricks scattered along the sidewalk. after a driver crashed through the coffee shop trying to get away from police. >> we are just really glad. we are really lucky it happened in the middle of the night when no one was here. >> reporter: an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle, tran plate and realized the car was stolen. the 18-year-old driver, though, wouldn't pull over. the suspect then slammed through the cafe. you can see the damage done inside. the driver then took off and police searched backyards nearby. but it was an alert dispatcher at tom's taxi who knew about the accident and helped police make the arrest. >> i got a phone call. the guy was out of breath. he said he was on charles street in saugus. he was on charles street in lynn. we figured out where he was. the guy kept... i called the cops.

they said. nofy >> reporter: police caught up with the cab and arrested igor cruz of malden. laramee says this is not the first time they have helped lead police to a suspect. >> we are not like uber. we have two-way radios. we are in contact with each other all the time. we hear what's going on. >> we will be up and running... we will be serving coffee tomorrow. i guarantee it. >> reporter: that 18-year-old suspect is facing a number of charges. including receiving stolen property. we are live from lynn, nicole oliverio, 7 news. >> a car carrier track or-trailer bursting into flames on the pike in charlton. shutting down two lanes of traffic. state police say the scene is now clear. all the lanes are back open. investigators are looking into caused that fire. an armed robbery at a shell gas station in auburn.

we are running more than 11.5 month. december on record. and despite the cold and the snow that's here right now, snow for tomorrow, we may still wrap up the month with dates. incredibly so. current temperatures, though, quite chilly. you will notice quite a difference. now. 33 in boston. with a breeze out of the north, northwest, it feels like 19 in worcester. feels like 24 in boston. windchill. as long as you have everything bundled up, including wearing you will be all right out there. we do have some sunshine with us today. we have also seen some light snow showers. ocean-effect snow showers that as we moved through the morning hours. that is not out of the question today. mostly sunny skies. cold temperatures. colder than it has been. let's talk about this monster storm system that's ripping through a good portion of the country. place.

here comes the system. two of those things colliding. you get the wet weather that moves in with the cold air and the snow. turning to rain. as those temperatures warm. looking ahead through the timeline, after midnight tonight, that is when the snow turns on. it does start out as snow for most of us. then we change to a wintry mix, ending with all rain as we make it into the afternoon. this isn't one of those storms where you have to get out and shovel. it looks like it will melt off as we head into the afternoon we have to watch out for the morning commute. winter weather advisory in effect through 1:00 p.m. how much snow are we talking? three to five inches. one to three. we have dealt with this. we have dealt with much worse. however, this is going to be the crunchy, crusty snow until it melts into sort of a mess. again, with the timeline, 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., most of us seeing that snow kind of trying to pile up fast and furiously. and freezing rain on top of. that turning to all rain by 1:00 p.m.

the evening commute. for more on this monster storm and where it is right now, danielle gersh. >> danielle: thanks, bri. you saw the damage it did through the dallas area. a little earlier in the newscast. still we could see tornadoes popping up in alabama. we have a tornado watch in effect for much of the state still. very strong storms with this system. flash flooding a threat. strong damaging straight-line winds. a threat all the way up into st. louis, too. now, north up towards the great lakes, they are dealing with the winter storm warnings. because they have the cool air in place. they are seeing a lot of the snow that we get to see as we head into tomorrow. another threat, though, tomorrow. we have been talking about the sleet, too. we have a cold atmosphere. sandwiched in between the two cold areas of air we have a warm layer of air. so we have the snowflake that forms. then it melts. snowflake. instead, it becomes sleet. that tomorrow morning. freezing rain, too.

24 in boston. this is really setting the stage. at least those cold air temperatures. for our event tomorrow. as we get that wet weather that moves in from the south that couples up with the cold air that is in place for us. for the rest of the day today, we could see some ocean-effect snow showers. we already have earlier today. don't expect anything more than a dusting. that is really all we are watching out for today. as far as flakes go. into tomorrow, though, here is the monster storm that is in store for us. it looks like it is so far away at this point. man, that storm, it is really making headlines. a big portion of the u.s. i mentioned the cold air is in place for us. here comes the storm and it sweeps through the front. bringing the wet weather on in. the problem is that it's coming with a mid-layer of warm air. that sort of wedges in there. that is when we start to see that wintry mix rather than snow. what we do get snow to start off with and this could pile up a few inches in some locations. then it changes to just an absolute icy mess.

up is upsetting. but it won't stop them from reopening. >> we will be up and running, serving coffee tomorrow. i guarantee it. reporth the side of the building boarded up. that 18-year-old is facing charges, including receiving stolen property. in lynn, nicole oliverio, 7 news. >> the two women accused of making up a story about seeing a man throw a baby into the merrimack river in haverhill will be in court. a 42-year-old woman in and her 23-year-old daughter are set to be charged with misleading a police investigation and filing a false report. officers spent hours searching the water on christmas eve but later determined the report was made up. things starting to get back to normal after fraudulent charges hit hundreds of customers at quincy credit union. the bank restricted all of the debit card and a.t.m. authorizations after those issues were discovered over the weekend. a message posted on facebook sunday, the credit union says it appears hackers used skimmers to steal card

they are still under a tornado watch: the threat for strong storms. a lot of rain, flash flooding. straight-line winds is still there. in the great lakes region they are under winter storm warnings. they are getting a lot of snow we get so see tomorrow. let's talk about the sleet. this is kind of neat. see what i did there? below freezing in the upper layers of the atmosphere. that is where the snowflakes form. then the warm layer of air. they melt. they can't reform as snowflakes. they form as sleet. for more on how that is going to mess up the commute tomorrow morning, back to you. brey yeah. watching out for the morning commute. that is where we will see the issues. because freezing on contact. we start to see that ice secretion. again, we have dealt with much worse in this area. this is a first winter storm.
