are off of wo with them tomorrow. so here you go. we are quiet right now the we'll be quiet during evening hours here is the storm system back through western new york and wednesday pennsylvania and it is winding up through the center part of the station. it will pass to the west and when those storms go off to our west some time or fore we'll run into milder air which will change the snow over to a mixture of sleet and freezing rain. it is cold right now though. 20's to around 30 in the city of boston. and your storm time line again dry over this evening up until about just after midnight tonight and then around 3 oh being or fur o'clock tomorrow morning that's when snow arrives in do you know town boston certainly back to worcester hills merrimac valley. here come that pink ribbon, that pink shading indicating where we have sleet and freeing rain going on. we'll have several hours of sleet tomorrow morning just inland, just away from the ocean 95 certainly 128 west up to 495 route 2 corridor. several hours of sleet and then freezing rain on top of the sleet. meanwhile, metro boston and south shore quickly changes over
5:01 pm
7:00 and 9:00 a.m. then it's just a cold rain for the city of boston later tomorrow morning through the early part of the afternoon and for everyone it winds down as drizzle and freezing drizzle tomorrow afternoon. so how much snow is on the way is it a coating to an inch boston proper which gets washed away on the south shore even in the city itself and then just inland one to three inches of snow with some sleet an ice on top of that and then farther north north of the route 2 corridor mass new hampshire border three to five inches of snow before transitionings over to some freezing ran and then freezing drizzle tomorrow afternoon. what a mess. chris, you start talking . >> anchor: sounds good, jrment take it from here. were you mentions that storm going up into the midwest and essentially what that is going to do is transition over the snow to some sleet and some freezing rain but at first the level that sees a lot of warming above the freezing mark is about 7 to 10,000 feet up in the air as it goes up and over the cold air that's locked in place down near the surface so essentially what happens out of the clouds,
5:02 pm
layer, it melts into these raindrops and then the last six or 5,000 feet below that it re refreezes into ice pellets, sleet pellets and that's how have you sleet. when that warm layer is really deep from about 10,000 feet all the with a i down to about 1,000 feet you don't have much time to free freeze those drops so it can't with the surfaces. that's when you get freezing rain, that's when you get the glaze, that's when it sticks to the trees and power lines, that's when it becomes more of an be uso if you are looking at sleet versus freezing rain you rather take the sleet because it's going to buns off the trees and off the power lines. it's the freezing rain that starts to stick to some of the power lines and tree branches and it looks like we'll have up to about a quarter of an inch of that ice out through fitchburg, most of worcester county, papers over quarter of an inch back threw eastern slopes of the berg berg. maybe isolated power out ans if a couple of tree branches fall down on a few of the lines out through worcester county that's more likely though back into

best opportunity and that's why we did it and i didn't like the way it worked out but to me that was the right decision for our team at that time . >> reporter: one that tom brady isn't about to second guess . it's hard to insire your coach when you don't do much offensively all day and our defense was doing a lot of good things here in the fourth quarter and hyped sight is always 2020. it just didn't work out our way this time . >> anchor: fortunately for the pats they till have time to sew up the top spot in the afc a asuing they right the ship sunday in miami. it's tough. you have to learn from it and move on quickly. miami is another good team, another challenge for us so labor we should come out, have another great week of practice and try to get a win next week . get focused on miami. we know what the goal s.get a win. lock up this top seed and then take care of the rest. >> anchor: so if the patriots win sunday they will secure the top spot while lost. most likely will land them the

5:20 pm
would say between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m. when the snow arrives. it will change to sleet and freezing rain early in the day tomorrow especially boston as well as the south shore. it's a slower process though going from the snow to the sleet to the freezing rain. merrimack valley route 2 corridor and even up through the new hampshire sea coast. poor travel tomorrow morning for those of you that are going to have a morning commute tomorrow allow extra type it. does look messy. if you can work from home i would do that and you may still be on that holiday vacation. that would be the best option of all to enjoy of kick back and watch the first winter storm coming at us which it's going to behave like you would typically find i think a storm in new england at the end of december, early january where there is some warm air and so we are talking rain, snow ribbons un unlike last winter where we had single store [ there was no rain snow line even on the cape it was just these huge amounts of snow, a light and fluffy snow because they were so cold. this go around again it certainly is cold out there
5:21 pm
20's to 30 in the city of boston boston. but you notice new york city at 40 and dc 45 so there is milder air lurking to our southwest and there is also going to be milder air that comes in over our heads overnight tonight and in through tomorrow morning your storm time line again some flurries just after midnight but we'll have a burst of light snow between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m. and if you have morning commute again that gets underway around 6:00 this is what we think the radar will look like. a lot of pink and that's the area where you will find the sleet and freezing rain the snow changing over to sleet and rain and then that happens quickly. south of the mass pike but you notice we're still holding on to the pink mass pike up to route 3 as well as 93 and 95 up into new hampshire. new hampshire sea coast sleet and freezing rain and snow and for several hours tomorrow it will be a sleet storm going on in northern worcester county, merrimac valley, nashoba valley and through the morning hours. then it does wind down to some
5:22 pm
then actually i think we'll go back into freezing drizzle even evening. so how much is on the way? generally i would say a coating to an inch around the city and rain tomorrow later in the morning and through the afternoon. one to three inches of snow, worcester, fitchburg, then several hours of sleet on top of that and then that will end with a little bit of freezing rain. somewhat concerned that there may be some minor power disruption in northern worcester county, southwest new hampshire. again because of a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch buildup of ice i should say but it's over here on the east slopes of the berkshires where we're thinking a quarter to maybe a half an inch of ice bud up and that location right there that's probably the most likely area to have power disruption but it is within the realm of possibility that could be brief power disruption northern worcester county, midday tomorrow through the afternoon but this is not a repeat of that ice storm several years ago in northern worcester county. that's the good news there. in any event 7 on 7 forecast wednesday and thursday clouds and sun, thursday mild,
