you are going to hold your snow there through new year's eve so good holiday skiing to be had. a bit of fresh stuff. what happened this afternoon wave of low pressure south of us sliding to the east. as it slid to the east the onshore winds we had earlier today jumping many temperatures up above the freezing mark. now transitioning back to the north and that allows the cole air to drain back down. and what we've seen from north to south throughout the afternoon and the now into the early evening hours is this refreeze and areas of black eyes on untreated surfaces. talking about the main roads that have been well salt and treated are okay right now. but any of the side streets, even onand off-ramps as well as driveways and sidewalks slippery. boston at 34, that is at logan airport. 24 lawrence, 25 worcester. these numbers are dropping close to the city of boston. i mentioned that 34, that is at the airport. you go inland by about a mile or two, it's 30 degrees

28 in waltham. now down to 29 in dedham and it's cold. merrimack valley mid 20's northern worcester county watching temperatures drop south of the city of boston. we're down to 34 foxboro and 38 degrees in randolph so we'll continue to see the numbers south of the city drop. spots. temperatures average the upper 20s tomorrow. a couple of showers tomorrow night and the surf features quiet -- seven-day forecast features quiet but seasonable weather. >> nick you are at the site of a wreck. >> reporter: that's right. we're just taking a look at a utility pole that is done. behind this police car that is a mini van that went into the pole. the pole is laying across the road. this is not a situation where there are live wires or anything, but if you look just below the police car, you can see that shine on

we're getting temperatures of about 23 degrees where we are. so obviously some icy conditions on these secondary, residential roads. so you want to be careful on any of these roads now they're starting to freeze over after the rains have come through. so we're going to keep an eye on this. there doesn't appear to be injuries or anything like that, but obviously slick conditions and icy conditions up here north of the city. when we were driving north on 93, the highway is better off and in better shape than the smaller roads because more cars are on them. so you get wet roads but not as slick and icy as this. so that is the latest from blind the wheel of of the traffic tracker, nick emmons, 7 news. >> elizabeth: a tractor trailer crashing through a guard rail in sutton. police say the accident was because of the sloppy weather. a lane of the highway was closed down for a time. no injuries were reported. remember you can track the storm with our 7 news weather app.

although they're suffering at least they still have one another. >> it's tough. it's -- i don't know right now i'm just waiting for everybody to be through with me. to figure out where -- i going. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is under afternoon. as for the family, the red cross is finding them somewhere to sleep tonight. news. >> elizabeth: a dartmouth college swimmer dies while practicing in florida over christmas break. police say tate ramsden was attempting to swim four lapse under water without breathing when his family noticed he wasn't moving and pulled him from the pool. scene. he was a junior at dartmouth where he was on the swimming and diving teams and member of a fraternity there. a university released a statement offering the family their sympathies for this tragic death. boston police are asking for help in identifying a person

investigators say the person seen in these photos broke in the construction site on nashua street december 14 and stole $20,000 in copper welding cable. >> ryan: a disappearance in oak as crews search for a missing country singer. on monday police found their capsized boat and moorland's body but strickland's family is hopeful he will be found alive. snow and sleet leading to a deadly crash in new york. you can see the aftermath. police say a fedex truck and a van collided early this morning. the van was left a mess. both vehicles ended up in the median. the driver of the van was killed. the accident still under investigation. >> elizabeth: an 88-year-old woman takes a dangerous drive through the front of a store. you can seat woman pulling into a parking spot then flying straight through the door.

homeless man a second chance after he kicked him off his newly purchased property. >> the owner gave him a temporary job and room to stay at the very house he was squatting on the porch. james and a friend were huddled here trying to keep out of the rain. >> the back of the house sleeping bags, wet blankets, things like that. >> reporter: chris bought to clean the place up. >> we looked in the trash and, well, stuff is gone. what do we do. >> reporter: on friday chris found the two trying to figure out how they were' trying to survive without their personal items. when chris explained the men had to go -- >> i was sad but what else could you do? >> reporter: what james did next surprised him. >> he understood, wasn't bitter about it. and then he thanked me as i walked away. >> reporter: the fact that he said it so kindly like, you know, sure, thank you for not, you know having a

moisture, doesn't show up well on the radar but it's there. although the heaviest of the precipitation is well offshore, you may wick up .01 of an inch of freezing drizzle but that is enough to create the glaze. slipping and sliding down front steps. a lot of the ski resorts pushing a half foot of snow southern new england the concern has been the change over great drizzle and rain back to the freezing drizzle. we are down to 32 norwood and look at that even at logan airport, now, down to 30 degrees as the wind is out of the north. that cold air has been built up across the mesh maack valley -- merrimack valley continuing to tress counseltown boston down to 29 degrees, ice scrapers on the wind shields. you are probably going to

couple of hours as we collect freezing drizzle there and slick spots on the sidewalks in the city of boston. north and west of town it has been below freezing especially up to southern new hampshire. a lot of the secondary roads slick travel ahead of us through the evening. although main roads have been well treated faring ok but watch the on and off-ramps. randolph at 3. west bridgewater at 39. cold air is yet to hit you but we're down to 43 in foxboro. going to be short here from foxboro up through mansfield to attleboro. temperatures will be dropping below freezing within maybe the next half hour to hour. watch for slippery spots down there. that way as well. northwest wind in the city of boston 12 miles an hour, 16 down there in plymouth and look at the cold air, portland maine, half a foot of snow, 19 degrees, when the cold air is so cold and dense down near the surface, once you change that wind direction back to the north it spills on in down into southern new england again.

and the patchy drizzle at least through midnight. 34 down toward the cape and the islands hoding to the mid to upper 30s there. upper 20s in boston and low 20s to the north and to the west. tomorrow mostly cloudy skies. 35-40 degrees. we're going to get rid of the storm system here but we'll catch more showers tomorrow night and that will be plain old rain. seven-day forecast, giving us a quiet new year's eve. new years day seasonably cold weather over the weekend. >> anchor: thank you, going to head back out to nick emmons who is in the traffic tracker, how is it looking out there? >> reporter: looking pretty frosty out here. elizabeth. as you can see the roads are shiny. temperature right now is 24 degrees here in andover. more people starting to make their way on to the roads as they're making their way home from work so you are seeing more people starting to crowd the streets. secondary roads are the concerns we've been saying it all evening for you.

the bigger threat of icing over because fewer cars go over them. they're not always treated. so you want to be careful for black ice. we got back from an accident not too far of where we are now a mini van taking a turn a little too fast went into a utility pole. so the threat right now to slick conditions. careful. give yourself extra time getting home or getting to wherever you need to be. we've seen cars as well that may have the sheet of ice on their hood or roof. nice that clear that over because it's frozen. we saw a sheet fly off the top of a car. so that can cause damage to the cars behind you so be `mindful of that but we're making our way through andover. going to jump back on the highway to take a being look again. be careful out. there that is the later live from behind the wheel of the traffic tracker, nick

getting slick. check with joe stapleton. he is tracking the traffic around this area, what do up for us? >> those secondary roadways are big concern. route 2 somebody is right on top of the list and on top of the screen. multiple accidents out by the 128 off-ramp eastbound and westbound on route 2. some delays there out to worcester to the left hand side, you can see as well. so close to a 6-mile backup in the oxford area getting by route 395. right travel lane blocked off as the investigation continues around a crash in the area. tight volume along route 93. north of town coming up to the lawrence area. route 3 a tough go in burlington. 128 good news southbound the earlier crash by route 3 is off the roadway. still tight going there. downtown we're in great shape for a change. 93 northbound and southbound, not moving too badly here on the zakim. joe stapleton, 7 news. >> elizabeth: topping today's health cast,
