30 starts now. >> anchor: slick and dangerous, our first weather storm brought a messy storm that caused our roads. >> chris lambert joins us with what to expect. >> reporter: a little bit of everything is what we've had with this storm system. atkinson 4 and a half inches of snow. grovelands at 3 and a half. methuen, pepperell at 3. along the mass, new hampshire border picking up between 3 and 4 inches of snow and sleet. millis just over one, just under one in the city of boston but it was enough to create a mess out there. you are saying what is left out there? not much. low-level moisture. but we've had patches of it and we've had a lot of refreeze go on as temperatures were above freezing and then dramatically dropped off back below the freezing mark.

advisory that runs until midnight tonight. for all of the commonwealth with the exception of down through buzzards bay, cape and the islands. storm system pulling away from us. a lot of the moisture offshore. had a secondary wave arrive to the south and east of us, as that passed winds went back to the north. colder air drained in. downtown boston we are down 31. lexington at 26. 25 wayland and a little bit of light freezing mist out there and we do have that to coat the cars. you need the ice scraper getting ready for the commute. a lot of the secondary roads slippery as well. main roads doing okay. second 'roads that haven't been treated as well and some of the sidewalks and driveways out there. slip sliding in. ran do feel down to 24. over to dighton above the freezing mark. this will change over the next hour or two. take a being look at the

what to expect on new year's eve in a bit. >> nick emmons is joining us with a closer look at the conditions. he is in lawrence right now and how are things looking out there? >> reporter: looking pretty slushy out here. again as you said we're in lawrence on 28 south. nice slow and go here on this road. temperatures at about 23 degrees. according to our car so icy conditions here. everyone appears to be making their way around safely. we've seen plows coming in and out. people shoveling off the sidewalks, one thing to be aware of the sidewalks are icy. so you see people starting to venture out into the streets. so that is creating a little bit after traffic backup every now and then as cars are waiting for people to get through the street and make their way around safely on foot. on the highway things are looking good 37 we were behind a plow for sometime and it was' salting treating the roads so the roads are wet but they don't appear to

people that were heading north on 93 were forced to take it slow because of all the traffic. so we're keeping an eye on things here on 28 south. take it slow and easy and that is the safest way to bet. that is the latest live from behind the wheel of the traffic tracker, nick emmons, 7 news. >> elizabeth: this just in, shuttle buses are replacing blue line service between maverick and bodyin stations tonight. repairs. the mbta says a metal grate in the ceiling came loose and it needs to be fixed right away. they can't wait on this one. busings running on parts of the blue line tonight. >> ryan: also hit by tragedy again. a rockland family whose son was killed in iraq dealing with losing their home to fire. flames sent three people to the fire this morning. kelli o'hara spoke to the mother who is trying to cope with this tragedy. >> it has been a real loss. been a real lot. we just got over christmas. >> reporter: four days

family no stranger to tragedy is hit again. their home catching on fire. maureen o'hare a widow and mother to nine sits in shock on the back of this red cross truck cold and trying to process what has happened. o'hare has not only lost her home but lost a son to the iraq war. >> my son died in iraq in fallujah, a place i had he ever even heard of. just before his 21st birthday. >> reporter: the family had been struggling o'hare say, their home even possibly falling into foreclosure. the 57-year-old says although they are suffering at least they still have one another. >> i've already lost enough. but it's, it's tough. i don't know right now i'm waiting for everybody to be through with me. to figure out where i don't even know where i'm going everyone the cause of the

as for the family the red cross is finding them somewhere to sleep tonight. news. >> elizabeth: boston police are asking for help identifying a robber on the run accused of stealing thousands of materials from a construction site. investigators say the person seen in these photos broke into the moriarity construction site on nashua street december 14th and stole $20,000 in copper welding cable. a dar mouth college swimmer suffer as tragic death in florida over christmas break. police say tate ramsden was attempting to swim four lapse under water without breathing when his family noticed he wasn't moving. he was 21 years old. >> anchor: al-jazeera tying by the story tying payton manning to performance. enhancing drugs.

recipients of the h.g.h.was payton's wife ashley manning. the reporter cleared up some of the details of her report. >> let's make is clear what the allegation is. the allegation in the program is very simple. the when charge sly worked at doing part of his rotation for pharmacy the clinic was sending out not one shipment but repeated shipments of growth hormone to ashley manning in florida >> anchor: manning says he might sue al-jazeera for defamation. >> anchor: police are on high alert after the troubling disappearance of a country singer in oklahoma. chris strickland went on a hunting time when he disappeared. investigators have found a capiz sod boat in a nearby lake but strickland's family is hopeful that he will be found and hi will be alive. strickland is the front man of the band "back road anthem which was formed in 2012.

woman takes a dangerous drive right through the front of the store. you can see the woman start to pull into a parking spot then go flying. look at this right through the door. police say she apparently hit the gas instead of brake. the vehicle hit one man who is expected to be ok the woman and another person in the car were not hurt. a california woman thought throwing her dog on to the ground. you can see her colding the dog by the collar then tossing it on to the street. she was' arguing with her exboyfriend. the man shooting the video says it's not the first time she abused the dog. she could face jail time if caught by police. >> anchor: oklahoma was shocken up after it was rocked by an earthquake. it caused heavy damage to the store we're looking at right now. offices say it registered 4.3 on the richter scale. more than 4,000 homes lost power. no reports of any injures. wear getting a closer look at a devastating tornado in

>> anchor: too hot to handle. a hover board exploded inside a texas mall just two days after christmas. the fire forced shoppers to evacuate. >> ryan: nanny kens shows us how security guards kept the situation from getting worse. >> reporter: shocked shopper recording video as a texas mall security guard puts out a hover board that wept up in flames. >> everybody was looking at it. >> reporter: david miller saw the aftermath. >> you could see the thing on the floor. they couldn't buff it out. >> reporter: pictures show smoke nilled the first floor of the small and the victoria secret store shut down shortly after the fire. the board was one of several being cold by excel toys and boards. in a statement a spokesperson said this afternoon there was an incident with a hover board at deer brooke mall which resulted in the small fire that was quickly contained. as a precause the fire department responded.

property damage. deer brooke mall remains open at this time. >> we're talking about it today. but nobody is trying to get those if they keep blowing up. >> reporter: mall goers question the safety of having the popular boards in the mall in the first place considering similar situations have happened. >> they're trying to sell it to you quick and easy and get you out of the paul. i wouldn't do it unless i know what i'm doing with it. >> reporter: a family trying to get a renew england on a $400 hover board say the man who told them the popular toy nas has not oned their calls. the mall hasn't decided whether to allow the sale of hover boards in the mall. nance chen, 7 news. >> elizabeth: a hover board causes mike tyson to go down today. you can see him riding across his living room, oh, that is a hard full. he takes a tum million. he tweeted this. he is doing just fine.

the 5th latest on record. go back to 2000 and we waited until january 13 to catch snow in the city of boston. it took a while. now we're dealing with the freezing rain and the aftermath of cold air and moisture still in the atmosphere creating slick conditions out. there all this pink shaded area is where we have a frame advisory until midnight including the city of boston. radar is quiet. not. going on when you take a first glance at it but the radar beam overshoots a lot of the moisture. that is in place but you can see with the reduced visibility at 2:00, 3 miles in here and with that moisture in place, we have patchy drizzle and patchy freezing drizzle still out there. look at the number in boston, 28 degrees, closer to 40 a few hours ago. the wind changed direction. cold air came draining in then right down 95 into the city of boston. 93 in the city of boston. right through metro west as

we're 28 in the city. 27 in dedham. 28 waltham and it has been cold for several hours now up north up into southern new hampshire through the north shore so we're continuing to see icing conditions on the roadways. certainly the side streets and driveways and sidewalks have frozen solid back over. you take a being look at what is going on through fitchburg. never got enough freezing. now back below. 31 foxboro, 28 attleboro. west bridgewater sitting at 3 degrees. the freezing line is basically right on route 24 and pushing off to the south and to the east. it won't be as dramatic of a drop-off but we'll cool down overnight. a lot of us back to the lower middle 20s tonight. holding low to mid 30s across the cape and the islands but the theme here over the next several hours we'll contend with the patchy freezing drizzle out there and the refreeze, a

already out there. careful with the black ice. in areas of slush, that freeze over watch your step out the door. certainly be careful driving around this evening. 35-40 tomorrow. temperatures above the freezing mark and it's mostly a quiet day tomorrow. although late in the day we'll watch some of the showers approach from the south and from the west. couple of those showers will roll through but a few rain showers coming through and you look behind the rain showers, the 7 on 7 forecast is quiet as we go into new year's eve, midnight temperatures in boston, running into the 30s new year's eve. new years day looking dry with highs near 40. >> adam: coming up on 7 news at 6:00 breaking news. major delays on the blue line as we speak as the mbta makes some emergency repairs. we will tell you about that. the repairs come as the first storm of the season hit the bay state. a flash freeze is causing

there planning to get around. >> elizabeth: lots of slick spots out there for drivers. be careful. we begin our team 7 coverage with chris lambert. >> reporter: we've seen temperatures drop quite a bit and on the ground a slushy four and a half inches of sleet and snow. at kinton, new hampshire which is we frozen. even boston close to an inch. just shy of it. bellingham at 2 inches, we have a lot of the snow and lot of slush puddles closer to the coastline, that has refrozen in the city of boston. or is continuing to be in the process of refreezing. anywhere you see the area of pink we have a freezing rain advisory until mid night tonight. this stops just around prim bay. the kernel is not overly heavy precipitation but low level moisture providing us there.
