about midnight tonight. but aga it's into the a bitter wind chill. just a bit of a cooling affect. wind chills if you will in the upper 30s to around 40, partly cloudy skies. we're dry overnight. there is no bitterly cold air in southern new england. no rain. no snow. so temperatures as we work through the early evening hours near 40. midnight middle 30s with the breeze happening at midnight. it'll feel like about 32. then very late tonight the numbers cool off into the lower 30s we did melt snow and ice out there so there may be areas of refreeze very late tonight on untreated surfaces but main roads should be okay. have fun. >> adam: there is breaking news overseas. flames tearing through a skyscraper in dubai. you are burning debris rained down as people ran away limits the fire started brandon gunnoe is here with more on this breaking story.

saying that the fire is mostly under control but the building is still burning. the fire started just a few hours before midnight in dubai when witnesses say they heard a loud pop and noticeds flames quickly spraying up the side of the building. smoke filling the sky covering up part of the world's tallest fire. the fire spread. many people were at the hotel to watch the fireworks display when the fire started. you can see people right there rushed from the scene. witnesses saying that the staff evacuated people from the hotel quickly. and calmly. reports are 14 people have minor injuries and that one person suffered a heart attack due to the smoke. millions packed city for the celebrations but witnesses say when the fire started the city got quiet. >> you know it's a sense of evuria, then all of a sudden you saw the flames and

point. and now it's a sevens -- sense of silence out there. >> adam: the celebrations went on as planned when the clock hit mid night. millions of people were there to watch. many cities are on high alert tonight for terror attacks but offices say is there no indications that this fire was part of an attack. brandon gunnoe, 7 news. >> adam: turning to a york. police there say they've stopped a potential terror attack planned for tonight. eman wuhl lutchman is behind bars. he planned to attack a bar on behalf of isis. authorities say he told an f.b.i. informant that he wanted to kidnap and kill people to prove himself to the group. and that he expressed a desire to join isis in syria. >> elizabeth: here in boston security will be tight to ensure a safe celebration. this year, first night has been scaled down a little bit.

counting down to the winter classic. bruins and canadiens are gearing up for a game over at gillette. there is a lot of excitement sur rounding this new year's eve day. >> elizabeth: there will be one bruin who will be sitting out. today he had a message for fans. trey daerr is live to kick off the winter classic coverage. >> reporter: brad marchant not being able for the game. a huge storyline heading into this. tomorrow is the greatest spectacle in hockey and gives the nhl to chance show sporting world. >> it's a special moment. i mean, especially here at gillette stadium with 60,000 plus fans. it's something we don't get to experience at all. >> reporter: patrice bergeron and the bruins savoring every moment of their winter classic but

condon will start for the habs when they take on the bruins at gillette. >> usually when i'm at gillette i'm in the last row of thenote bleeds but it's nice to be back on the main level there. so it was, it's nice to get out there and get a feel for the ring. >> reporter: condon is a big patriots fan and will tip his mask toed hometown football team but whenned puck drops at one he only be the only pats fan on the ice. >> playing for boston was a dream come true. now playing an outdoor game at gillette, kid growing up watching the history occur, now to be able to step on to the field and the rink and it will be a lot of fun for me. >> reporter: jimmy hays and frank grew up miles away from gillette watching and rooting for the pats. they say it's an incredible feeling to play in the winter classic. >> i'm really excited. i'ming in massachusetts, you know, playing where the patriots are for the bruins.

>> reporter: all three told us this game is as important as it is special. they know how tight the stopping are as first place is on the line. alex corddry, 7 news. >> adam: putting gillette stadium on ice was so easy task. it took crews almost a full week to get it ready for the big game. jonathan hall got a lesson into what went into making gillette stadium winter classic worth. >> reporter: the nhl has been hosting this winter classic outside since 2008. six years ago it was at fenway park. what a time that was. and in all that time the league has learned a thing or two about how to make the playing conditions as good as possible. it took a ton of time and effort but in this nhl time lapsed video you can see it all come together. gillette stadium patriots country transforming into the home of the 2016 winter classic. the nhl is pleased with

bound for bangor, maine. the plane forced to make an emergency landing in rhode island. one of four emergency landings for aleague yant airline this week. >> anchor: passengers say there was more confusion once they got off. >> you could smell smoke, then some people said how the bathrooms were warm. >> it was a little scary when all of a sudden we started to descend. >> reporter: a flight diverted to t. g.green airport in warwick, yesterday. >> we had all fire trucks on the tarmac but they haven't said anything in terms of what was the matter with the plane. >> it seemed like it was a rough landing. brakes were hard and came to an abrupt stop. >> reporter: 120 passengers landed safely at about 4:30 and spend hours waiting at the airport. they were told they would be staying in hotels. >> buses scheduled to go to the bangor. -- >> reporter: then the company made plans to bus

and i were born, this has been a packed day here at gillette and patriots place. a lot of people getting here before bigger crowds. some people double dipping coming today and tomorrow when 70,000 plus people will come here for a new take on one of the best rivalries in all of sports. gillette stadium is all set for hockey in the new year. it's transformed into a winter wonderland for fans and players alike. b.and habes fans have a hands-on fest. the bruins held practice outdoors prepping to be on the national stage on new years day. bruins players not the only one soaking in the spotlight. the canadiens posing for a team photo. the two teams know each other all all of -- awfully well. over the last 90 plus years these two teams have played each other more than 900 times.
