tom costello is following the latest on this rescue operation. >> the fire department calling this a major rescue operation that's playing out as we speak. they've brought in a giant crane to help free 17 miners who have been trapped all night underneath the cayuga salt mine. they're planning to lower a basket down to lift out the miners two or three at a time. the 17 miners became trapped about 10:20 last night when they were headed down to the mine. 2,300 feet below ground, starting their shift. the mine operator cargill says none of the trapped miners is injured and rescuers have been able to lower down water, heat packs and blankets to them. unclear how long it might take to lift them all to safety. the mine has been operating since 1922. it processes 2 million tons of road salt each year. guys, back to you.

tom costello, thank you. bad news if you were hoping to wake up this morning as the nation's newest multi-millionaire. there was no powerball jackpot winner last night. the $500 million plus rolls over into saturday night. it's going to get crazy good on saturday. nbc's kerry sanders is back on powerball watch again. kerry, good morning. >> good morning. if you're waking up this morning and you got to go to work and you're sad, maybe this will cheer you up. take a look at how much larger the jackpot is when they do the it on saturday. before you take your tickets and rip them up before you lost, look at the numbers that were pulled last night. this would have been a record jackpot at $550 million. it would have been the fourth largest jackpot. there was at least one winner. somebody got $1 million on their ticket in the houston area.

the powerball numbers are 2, 11, 47, 62, 63 and that powerball number was 17. no winners there. the ticket buying frenzy will get crazier. yesterday, when the ticket value of the jackpot was going to be $550 million, they were selling more than 1,300 tickets a second. a tremendous number of tickets being sold. now it's $675 million. consider this, guys, that is more than the budgets of some tiny nations. it's a lot of money. >> well put, kerry. it's a lot of money. thank you very much. let's move to politics now. in the presidential race, donald trump is escalating his attacks on republican rival ted cruz, reiterating questions about the texas senator's eligibility to run for president. another prominent republican is looking into. peter alexander has the latest.

a high school basketball team is sending shock waves through a community. >> three players charged in the case. now, school officials are calling off the rest of that team's season, as parents of the action. >> reporter: a season cancelled and a community in crisis. three tennessee high school students are facing charges of aggravated rape and aggravated assault for brutal, alleged attacks on teammates during a hazing ritual. according to members of the ooltewah high school basketball team, four underclassman players were physically assaulted on december 22nd in a cabin where the team was staying during a tournament. one of those students, according to the victim report, was also sexually assaulted with a pool cue, receiving worse treatment because he spoke up to three of the players carrying out the attacks. the alleged attackers, two cough mother -- sophomores and one senior, have been kicked off the team,

chain under scrutiny over food born illness outbreaks. now, it is the target of an fda criminal investigation. tom costello has been looking into it. >> the fda and u.s. attorney's office will not say what potential criminal matter the grand jury is investigating. it centers on a case in simi valley last summer, before a strick of outbreaks that has since sickened hundreds. >> reporter: more bad news for a once favorite fast food chain, struggling through an unprecedented series of food born illnesses. chipotle announcing a grand jury subpoenaed documents relating to a norovirus outbreak last summer in simi valley, california. 207 people were sickened and some hospitalized. the victim attorney, bill marler. >> severe stomach cramps, diarrhea. sometimes they need medical attention for rehydration.

golden globe. some say it could win him the elusive oscar. he called this role the most challenging of his career. >> the structure was set up like live theater. we rehearsed all day, these meticulous, complex shots. >> like a live production. >> it was like live production, like doing "saturday night live," except what we were doing wasn't that funny. >> or fun. >> right. >> reporter: in his new film, leonardo dicaprio plays hugh glass, an explorer across the wilderness and his quest for revenge against a fellow explorer. he endures sub zero temperatures, unforgiving elements. in one of the film's most talked about scenes, a vicious bear attack. it was shot on location far from the comforts of a hollywood studio. what you see on screen is raw and, oftentimes, real. >> was there ever a moment when you thought, why did i do this?

>> literally, everyone felt that a few times a week, yes. i'm not going to lie, it was one of the -- it was probably the hardest, you know, films, professional things, i've ever done, for sure. >> one of the things you do in the film is actually eat a real bison liver. i wanted to believe that that was a prop, but it was real. why did you push yourself to do that? it's not like anybody would think, boy, what a lazy performance. you take that extra step. why? >> the native american actor that i was working with, hisarthur, and he was eating raw bison flesh during rehearsal. they gave me this pancake thing to eat but it didn't look authentic to me. i wanted the real thing. it was this giant liver that was incredibly disgusting. my reaction is very much up on

>> fair to say, you've had your last bison liver? >> i'll never do that again. never do that again. >> there's another scene where you crawl inside the carcass of a horse. i just kept thinking about the theme of will to live. watching this film, there were ten times i would have just said, forget it. i'll lay down and give up. how did you tap into that in your character, that absolute relentless will to live? >> when i watched this movie for the first time, i said, my god, the perseverance of the human species, our adaptability, the ability of life to keep pushing forward in all adversity is amazing. it's kind of displayed in this movie in a way i haven't seen in a while. because we were trying our people's journeys. >> did you actually crawl inside the horse carcass, or please tell me there was a set piece. >> yeah, there was a set pete.

i don't think i could take it. >> reporter: something that wasn't a set piece, dicaprio's beard. >> how long did it take to grow? >> four months or five months. but then i kept it for like a year and a half. i lived with that thing for a long time. >> seems to take on a life of its own. >> it became like a partner, like a life partner. >> reporter: now, all eyes are on dicaprio's chances during this year's award season. >> got to get off this boat. >> reporter: at this weekend's golden globes, he's nominated for best performance by an actor in a motion picture drama, a category he won in 2005 for "the aviator." for the elusive oscar statue, this year, he's considered a front runner. >> i'm very proud that a movie like this got made. it's very, very, very rare to see films that are this ambitious coming out of the hollywood studio system.

trying to promote this because i want to see more films like this out there, as a fan of movies. but as far as awards are concerned, the truth is, there's a lot of peace of mind in it because you really realize that you ultimately have no control over these things. >> is it something you hope for or set off to the side? >> like i said, you know, honestly, i do these movies because i really love movies and i want to make great movies. beyond your control. it really is. >> i'll see you at the golden globes. do you have your outfit? >> i have no idea what i'm wearing. probably the same boring black suit, as always. >> me, too. boring black dress. see you there. >> all right. >> we did the deep conversation and then i'm like, what are you wearing? >> they did the bison eating liver just once. >> one taker. >> it's incredible. don't you agree?

>> yeah. >> 2001, she's presenting the final award of the night. as the golden globes go on, they do present clips of all the nominated movies. she was supposed to come up and read the nominees off one last time, and then open the envelope and announce the winner. she started opening the envelope before reading off the nominees. everyone thought she was going to announce the winner prematurely. dick clark had to explain to her what to do. then she announced. >> in her defense, you know from doing the live shows, unless you do this, you have to know to go out there. there's an order and it's not easy to get it right. >> it's unpredictable. not easy. >> not at all. >> remember the golden globes when there was no golden globes? >> oh, do i remember. i was on nbc with billy bush and nancy odell, nbc special, where we announced the winners and did commentary. it wasn't the highest rated golden globes. >> it was a writers strike. >> the writers strike killed the

none of the stars were going to show up. instead, they had this press conference thing where some entertainment reporters read off the winners. as i said, nbc did a special. here's what i hate, this was the only time jon hamm won a golden globe for "mad men," and there was no ceremony for him to show up to and make a speech. the golden globes never give it to you unless you're a new show. >> jodie foster and her speech two years ago, she won the life achievement award. she's so private so we didn't know what she was going to talk about. she was revealing and personal. she had a brilliant moment. you felt like she was going to come out, i am loud and proud, i am single! everybody started laughing. she directed a movie since with george clooney and julia roberts this summer "money monster."
