12:14 pm
why it happened. >> once the hazmat team has cleared the room, the investigation came from the marshal's office and my office. or our department. getting in there to see what caused the problem, hopefully. >> christa: right now we will interrupt to go live to that news conference taking place with boston's police commissioner about the officer who was shot. >> some of our clergy, pat rose from the boston police patrolman's association. just to give you a brief outline: about 10:20 this morning, our officers from the mattapan drug unit were involved in an investigation of an individual who they... who was known to be a drug dealer. in the area. he is well-known to the officers. at that time, the officers also knew that he didn't have a driver's license.
12:15 pm
they boxed him in to stop him. at that time, when the officers were getting out of their vehicle, the suspect who was identified as grant headley. he is 27 years of age. from dorchester. he got out of his vehicle and began to fire unprovoked at the officer. the officer quickly exchanged gunfire. at that time, the suspect took off. the officers who were with the injured officer gave foot pursuit. they were able to tackle the suspect. and they were able to confiscate the automatic handgun which looks to be a 40-millimeter at this time. and bring him into custody without the suspect being injured. the suspect is well-known to us.
12:16 pm
prior firearm charges. he was locked up in 2012 when he was sentenced to three years in custody. he was released in april last year. he is out on probation. that is why he was pulled over. i want to commend my officers. you know, we are fortunate here that we don't have an officer who suffered a more severe injury. he has a serious leg wound at this time. time. the doctors down here have done a great job. i also want to commend my fellow officers. the officers were quick to respond. the leg was bleeding pretty good. our officers were equipped with tourniquets. with the help of the hnh ambulances, they got him down here quickly where he is under good care. again, very fortunate. that he is not more seriously injured.
12:17 pm
veteran assigned to the mattapan drug unit. he is highly decorated. we were just about to give him an commendation for a recent gun arrest that he made. again, we are all here, we are all thankful that he is obviously, isn't more seriously injured. and again, this goes to the whole idea of the restrain our officers used also. you know, this individual just shot one of our officers. the officers were able to tackle him and not use deadly force and to take him into custody and honestly, thank god, you know, he is in custody, but he also isn't shot in this particular situation. with that, let me turn it over to the mayor. then you guys can ask questions. >> first of all, i'm grateful that we are not here under a worse situation. the circumstance, my prayers go out to the family of this young officer. i commend him for his work. i also commend the men and women of the boston police department for their
12:18 pm
the situation. there is a lot of stuff that goes on around the country. a lot of criticism of police departments. and here in the city of boston, our police departments nation. being able to do their job every single day. the risk they take every single day going out there. also, one of the things i want to say, we have too many guns on the street. you know, we are working very hard, the boston police department took 800 guns off the street last year. took a thousand off the street the year before. we still have too many guns. like i said, we are not going to tolerate anyone going after the boston police department. their job is to protect the community and protect the neighborhoods. day in and day out. and in this situation here, again, i just want to pass along my prayers to the family. for a speedy recovery. and to let people know to appreciate the men and women of our police department here in the city of boston. i would like to now ask pat
12:19 pm
boston police patrolman's association to say a few words. >> all i want to say is thank god the officer is alive. day. and it's become far too common for people to take shots at country. and it can't be tolerated. the public has to step up. as far as the guns go, i agree. with the mayor. 100%. there are far too many guns out on the streets. the the city of boston does an excellent job checking them, arresting people with those guns. the bottom line is, though, we are the targets. we are the targets. and that is wrong. we are the men and women that are out there protecting you and this city. the public should not stand for this. it's outrageous. last night in philadelphia, a police officer was almost assassinated. somebody came up to him in a cruiser, ambushed him. fired, i believe, 13 times
12:20 pm
this has become a daily occurrence in this country. it cannot stand. we have to change the way we do business. thank you. >> he jumped out. was he shooting as he was running away? >> from what i understand, as soon as he got out, he started to shoot before the chase was even on. unprovoked. again, with our officers not even having their weapons out, from what i understand, he was shot. >> any idea how many shots he got off? >> again, it is a very active scene up there. if you have been up there. they are collecting shell casings. they are confiscating the guns. you know, again, we are still trying to determine... >> is the officer's wife here with him? >> yes. she is here. no children from what i understand. obviously, she is shaken up. his uncle is here. i think we are all resting knowing he is going to be fine.
12:21 pm
officer, commissioner? initially. a fellow uniformed officer who was nearby heard the call. he tied the tourniquet. and helped him. and that was fortunate. it could have saved his life. and at least saved his leg. >> what is his name is. >> again, i'm not sure if he had it on him. the gun was found close by. >> a couple more questions, folks. >> what is the officer's name? >> again, i don't want to give it. we are not sure if all of his family has been notified yet. we will get that out as soon as we know. again, you know, we got his wife here. believe it or not, i have heard his mother just underwent some really serious surgery. we don't want to alarm her: i don't want his name out at
12:22 pm
you know, i think our officers lay their lives on the line every day they go out. this job has not gotten any easier. given what's going on across the country. you know, like pat said, people have a lot of neg ty views for us. and you know, we work our best out there to make the neighborhoods safe. we are out there. so young kids aren't getting shot. it really bothers me that someone would think it's okay to shoot at a policeman. you know, as i said, this past. i'm sure he is desperate. and he doesn't want to go back to jail. that is probably what happened. an individual who had an a violent history who didn't want to go back to jail. most people in the neighborhoods, they are great people. we have to get off the street. like the mayor said and like what the president said, you know, there is way too many guns out there in the hands of the wrong people.
12:23 pm
but i'm just glad the officer is okay. >> how has the public responded soer fa in that neighborhood, to your knowledge? how has the public responded? >> i don't know. there has been some outreach. i have to tell you. n.a.a.c.p. the urban league from here. and they reevend out to me. they are very concerned. they are thankful that our officer is okay. and so you know, the clergy has rallingied around us. the associations have. the community is very much concerned. and they are also very thankful that the officer is okay. >> last question here, please. >> preliminarily, i'm being 40-millimeter. again, preliminary. that is what i'm told. that is a high-velocity type of handgun. the officer has a serious wound, but you know, he is alert. he is conscious. you know, right now it's
12:24 pm
>> what did you say to him? >> well, me and the mayor went in. we thanked him for his service. we told him, you know, in our minds, he is a hero. because he is out there doing the work, god's work. that is taking guns off the streets so young kids and young mothers don't have to deal with, you know, someone getting killed on the street. i said to him, "i appreciate his service. and hope for a speedy recovery." he is appreciative. you know, i think when the mayor comes and pays a visit, everyone realizes, you know, it's serious. and we all... both me and the mayor and all the command staff and the whole city appreciates what our officers do day in and day out. everyone realizes this job has gotten so much more difficult. what's happening in other communities. we continue to work. we have the lowest homicide
12:25 pm
38 homicides this year. and so we are doing a lot of great things to make this city safe. >> i know there is an investigation going on. is there anything he said that stuck out? >> again, i think he is thankful that he is okay. i think he is gratified that his officers were able to apprehend... you know, you never lose that cop in you. he is happy we got the gun and we got the person responsible. because that's what they set out to do. was take a dangerous felon off the street. and ultimately, they did what they had to. unfortunately, the officer got shot. that is the dangerous work we do every day. >> guys, we will end on that note. thank you so much. forecast you guys have any information listens >> christa: we learned more about what happened there, certainly. it is suspect has a violent past, according to police. that news conference went way beyond the who, what, where, and when. they were talking about the climate in this country and
