breaking news first at 5:30. a boston police officer shot in dorchester but police say they captured that shooter, the nine year veteran officer now recovering in the hospital . >> anchor: let's get over to kim khazei at the breaking news desk. she has what we know about the officer and the accused shooter . >> anchor: first of all, police say this all started when officers with the drug unit pulled over a known suspect this morning. the police commissioner says that is when the man came out firing his gun, shooting one of the officers in the leg. the other officers ran after the man, they tackled him a few blocks away. now the injured officer was rush insisted to boston medical center with that gunshot wound to the leg. but the police commissioner says he used a tourniquet on the injury right away and that saved his leg and likely his life. suspects now, well he is 27 27-year-old grant hedley. he was just given parole last year but his violent criminal record goes back for a decade. he is facing a number of gun charges in the past. the mayor and the police commissioner did visit the

and again he will be okay. news . >> anchor: we are following more breaking news right now. this is video you will see on one station. the bomb squad destroys the remainder of a chemical that caused an explosion in a north andover yesterday that left four people seriously hurt. authorities went into the dow yesterday's explosion took place and took out the rest of the potentially dangerous chemicals there. their investigation into a cause . >> anchor: class was canceled at an el the reschool after a large number of kids get sick of the right now school officials say a stomach virus outbreak is to blame. byron barnett live for us in winchendon with the thorough cleaning process happening this weekend. byron? >> reporter: that's right. the cleaning crews are inside the school right now trying to disinfect the entire building. this all started on tuesday when a kid came to school and got sick here at school. by thursday there were so many kids sick that the

to close the school. cleaning crews wearing masks and goggles dissent effecting memorial ement reschool following an outbreak of noro virus i'm hilly contagious stomach illness. school officials say it started tuesday when one student arrived for class . >> anchor: the student walked in early tuesday morning. >> reporter: skills said by thursday nearly 60 kids were sick with the same symcomes. that's 20% of the school. thursday morning there were reports of students with buckets running down will halls throwing up so it was, we knew we had a problem. >> reporter: the superintendent says after contacting the state health department, he closed the school and start insisted wiping down the school building and the school buses. i think all of the schools should have been closed because they have siblings too in other schools . >> reporter: school officials believe the outbreak started from that first sick child who

they are facing several charges. >> anchor: new details today about cable similar to one that exploded on a rhode island beach late last sum their may be underground in other states. officials say there are dozens of sites with those cables could still be underground. they say the explosion in rhode island was likely caused by a build up of hydrogen around a corroded cable. one woman was hurt during the explosion . >> anchor: more news trading the mother of fugitive teen ethan couch appearing in a texas courtroom this morning. tanya couch is being charge insisted with hindering the apprehension of a felon. authorities say couch helped her son run away to mexico back in november. prosecutors at the time were investigating whether her son had violated his probation for killing four people in a drunken driving crash. ethan couch remains detained in mexico city. and the texas state trooper indict insisted on perjury charges in connection to sandra bland's arrest is now free on bail. brian is accused of lying about what led to his argument form a traffic stop last year.

year in prisonp a $4,000 fine. now san bra bland died in her jail cell three days after her arrest this summer. video of her arrest sparked out outrage nationwide it. shows the officer yelling at bland to get her out of her car. she can later be heard screaming screaming. no one is facing charges in her death. >> anchor: florida police call it a terrifying time for a six six-year-old girl. a thief steals a car with a little girl still in the back seat. the girl now safe and sound and back with her parents who were left helpless when that thief sped off. off.. a six-year-old girl is safe clutching a teddy bear given to her by a police officer but she is clearly terrified. this surveillance video shows part of her frightening experience outside agas station. a man walks up to a insisted kia circles around it, jumps in and takes off. the owner frantically chases him because he knows that little girl, his stepdaughter was in the back seat. that's my daughter in the back seat. there is a child in the back seat. then when i said that, he

he spun around, almost hit the gas pump, almost taking the gas pump out. that's when i tried to cut him off in the front of it but if i cut him off he would have run over me . the thief quickly realize the little girl was in the back . the child did advise us the suspect did stop the vehicle and instruct the child to get out of the car. car.. >> reporter: that was to miles away from the gas station. police say she ran down the street crying and was spotted by a jogger who called 911 . this was only five to 8 minutes between the child located but just has to be a terrifying time to seem like an eternity . fear. as a parent you are supposed to protect your child and i couldn't do anything. i just prayed that he didn't touch my child. that's what was going through my head. i was just praying that he didn't touch her. p play are still looking for the thief and the stolen car. >> anchor: a holeless man in northern california is recovering in the hospital after being tough insisted in a garbage truck.

responded to the call thursday morning. fire fighters say the man was sleeping in a dumpster when the waste management truck made the pickup of the truck driver says they made four more stops before they heard the man screaming. there was no signs of anyone asleep in this dumpster and was picked up and came back inside the dumpster and they made several stops after that subsequent to that before they noticed or heard someone was inside the dumpster . >> anchor: the driver says the trash can't compactor in the truck is run at every stop. there is no word on the man's condition. >> anchor: new jersey state troopers helping a pregnant woman safely give birth on the side of a highway. she and her husband were rushing to the hospital when they had to pull over of the troopers found mom already in labor in the back seat. the newborn baby girl and her mother were taken to the hospital by ambulance and both are doing well. congratulations and this baby is going to come when it's going to come .

there is a big bag of rain heading with that warmer air so it's not like christmas eve where weigh had sunny and 65. it will be much warmer than where we are now. farther inland along west of 495 there are chilly pockets of air lower 30's. lots of clouds and even a couple of pockets of drizzle and so with the drizzle in and out of southern new england and the temperatures near 32, there may be a couple of slick spots in some of those roadways in worcester county as well as much of southern new hampshire. won't be widespread. little bit of drizzle. doesn't take much. just mindful that late tonight and very early tomorrow morning everyone inside 495 no worries tonight on those roadways with to around 40. through the day tomorrow cloudy skies, drizzle early on. kind of a cool day yet again. very similar to today. upper 30's, low 40's at the coast. the city around h-4-3 tomorrow afternoon. lakeville at 43 north of town merrimac valley mostly cloudy skies, near 40.

out on to the cape and island chatham 42 and mashpee at 43. you can do sking this weekend. sunday there is no real way to get around that one but saturday tomorrow actually i think it's pretty decent of a lot of clouds and there will be a couple of flurries and pocket or two of drizzle but nothing significant. lower 30's tomorrow and then of course on sunday it's the rainstorm. so what's going on? why is it raining and not snow snowing? we have had arctic air come into new england, there is nothing to lock that arctic air into place if we had high pressure up in greenland it would hold the arctic air down so when these the cold. then you get your snow lovers but what's been happen something that there is nothing to lock that cold air in place so when these storm come at us they just move the cold out of the way and then the cold returns after the storm. that's what will happen on sunday. here you go. here is your rainstorm midday sunday probably around noon then it's out of here sunday evening with windy conditions at the coast lynn and cold blast of area returning into england

we do a segment called class act every week where we highlight students are doing amazing things in their community. we love that you are doing project excel program at the kennedy day school. this is for all of us right here here. >> reporter: all of the students at kennedy day school at franciscan hospital in brighton want to help out. it's all part of their vocational training. the students learn speech techniques through high-tech equipment. some clicking on computer icons by focusing their eyes and the computer does the talking . my name is carly weaver. i am 18 years old . my name is kevin. i am 20 years old . >> reporter: ranging in age from 14 to 22 the students have significant and complex needs, but that doesn't hinder their speed of giving . hi, i'm here to complete the donations . >> reporter: i think one of the best things about our school is we're always thinking outside of the becomes and always trying to think how else can we help the community? at school we collect food to help families .
