>> christa: the man accused of shooting a boston police officer called before a judge. but the 27-year-old refused to show his face in court. he is accused of shooting the officer in the leg. >> sarah: the judge set his bail at more than $1 million. 7's dan hausle is live from dorchester with more on today's proceedings. dan? >> reporter: we learned today that the suspect wasn't the only one shooting that day.

investigators found that there were five shell casings from the suspect weapon and four shell casings from the shot officer's weapon. he got off almost as many rounds in return. the suspect continued to be troubled, according to court paperwork as he was arrested. he was troubled in court today as well. >> without bail for up to 90 days. a curfew of 6:00 to 6:00. thank you. >> reporter: an outburst in course as the suspect in last week's shooting of a boston police officer is arraigned. the courtroom packed with officers in uniform and plain clothes. as 27-year-old grant headley faces a long list of charges. >> resisting arrest. armed assault with intent to murder. >> reporter: with headley listening in the hallway off cam remarks prosecutors described how investigators say they spotted headley selling crack cocaine and pulled him over. >> as the officers exited their vehicle, the defendant immediately got out of the

turned and walked towards officer stokinger and fired numerous rounds at him as he continued to move closer to officer stokinger as he was firing those rounds. report tt officers was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot while other officers chased and tackled headley. the judge said headley's bail at more than a million dollars. relatives say it was because the officer was not more seriously wounded. headley voiced his own complaints as he was hustled away. >> the commonwealth has the right to ask that you be detained without bail for up to 90 days. >> reporter: with a long history of getting in and out of court for various charges, probations, this time he is being held, headley, on a police shooting. for the drug charges. that shot officer is at home

dan hausle, 7 news. >> christa: the man si ased in the death of bella bond appearing in court today. michael mccarthy was the boyfriend of bella's mother, rachelle bond. mccarthy pleading not guilty to first-degree murder. he is being held without bail. mccarthy put the child's body into a duffel bag, prosecutors say, weighted the bag, and threw the little girl into the water near boston's black falcon pier. however, defense attorneys say the child's mother who blames mccarthy for the death, is lying. >> the only evidence is the self-serving statement of rachelle bond. it is uncorroborated. it's unbelievable. and it is completely untrue. mr. mccarthy did not kill bella bond. on the contrary, all of the evidence points to ms. bond as the perpetrator. and the commonwealth's case

extraordinarily weak. >> christa: bella's body was found on deer island back in june. for months, she was known only as baby doe as police searched for her identify. rachelle bond is currently held on $1 million bail. >> sarah: news now turning to the weather. a cold and windy morning kicking offer the workweek. there could be some snow on the way. let's send it over to chris lambert with more on the forecast. >> chris: that snow moving in later tomorrow and evening. 27 in worcester. 34 in boston right now. we have some cold air back in place. the windchill factors, teens and 20's. thanks to the wind out there. at times, it is gusting over 30 miles an hour. still a few passing clouds to mix in with the blue skies. all in all, though, temperatures pretty steady. as you go through the rest of the afternoon into the early evening hours. there won't be much movement. pretty much what you see is what you get. temperature-wise and wind-wise. late in the afternoon, early

off with some rain showers and transition over to some heavier snow showers. especially out through worcester county. up into fitchburg and into southern new hampshire. the best chance of any accumulating snow during the evening commute, i think, is near 495 north and west. now, in the city of boston, up through the north shore, along the coastline, if we get a coating to an inch of snow, i think, most of that is after snow. maybe as late as 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. there. we have to keep in mind that there will be some slick spots, boston tomorrow. in the evening hours. not a big storm. some winter weather to talk about. more ahead. >> christa: more news now: a community shaken up after a home in gloucester suddenly goes up in flames. sadly, killing a man who was inside. neighbors say the man grew up inside that home and investigators are trying the figure out what went wrong. here is jennifer eagan with more. >> reporter: the flames took hold before gloucester firefighters got to the home just before 4:00 this morning. one person was trapped inside. >> i was at a significant

unfortunately, one fatality. >> we are investigating actively. report tt fire burned the second floor of the home along hammond street down to the studs. >> the first floor was fairly clear. the second floor was fully involved on arrival. they were able to make it up to the stairs. the fire was taking hold of the structure pretty well on the second floor and pushed them back down. >> the neighbors were awakened around 3:00 with crackling, and hadn't seen the fire. he did keep to himself. he was a loner. he did work. he kept to himself. >> i think it's awful. you know? a neighbor. you know? it's awful. >> reporter: investigators from the state fire marshal's offers have been here since the early morning. they are working with the gloucester fire department to determine the cause of the fire. officials have not released

in gloucester, 7 news. >> sarah: a race to the rescue in brockton. two young boys fell through thin ice. right now these two are recovering. more. nicole? department stressing how ponds this winter. especially because the temperatures have been going up and down. >> you take a look, what was once frozen this weekend is now basically back to its water form. firefighters say thanks to the quick actions of friends, that they were able to save the livesle of these two young boys. a frozen pond no more. the thin layer of ice melted. the same pond where two young boys fell through the thin ice this weekend in front of friends. >> i felt sad. i started crying. report@9 and 12-year-old were cracked. these friends were playing nearby and saw the pair in trouble. then rushed to help. >> we wanted to play on the ice.

they went too far in the middle. they fell in. report t boys ran to the street and flagged down passing cars. a driver and another stranger stopped to help. >> they hopped over the fence. they started breaking the ice to get them. >> reporter: they managed to pull out the nine-year-old. the older boy was submerged. now it was firefighters and dive teams making the rescue. >> they were determined. they were going to find this kid. they did. >> reporter: today school department offered needed it. parents of the quick-thinking children are praying for those two boys. >> it's sad. because of the kids. and it could have been my kid. or my nephew's. you know, i'm thankful for what they did. >> reporter: now, the nine-year-old was taken to the hospital on saturday night in good health. he is expected to be okay. fast family friend tells us, though, the 12-year-old is in a coma. there has been no further

we are live in brockton, 7 news. >> sarah: the suspect in a deadly hit-and-run in malden in court today. hitting and killing a 71-year-old as she crossed pleasant street two weeks ago. police have not released the suspect's name. a jeep plows into a community church in hudson, new hampshire this morning. the jeep went right through window. it is driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. >> christa: stocks plunging in china into negative territory today after a brutal first week of the new year. china saw huge drops last week because of concerns over the down trip's slowing economy. and weakening currency. u.s. stocks so opened higher today. >> sarah: in the race for the white house: two big names campaigning in our area today. republican front-runner donald trump holding a town hall in windham, new hampshire. the candidate bashed the union leader's newspaper for

future. >> christa: you know what? it is frigid out there. feels like the snow is coming. maybe even today. i know that is not the case. >> chris: hey, we need the cold air before we get the snow. temperatures in the 50's yesterday. it is not really the cold. it is wind. that constant wind. 22 miles an hour in the city of boston right now, driving the windchill down to 22. 34 in the city of boston. air temperature-wise, 27 in worcester. levels. we haven't talked much about seasonal weather as we have gone so far through this winter. wind steady out of the west. that west wind driving in some of the cold air. weather prevailing this temperatures not moving much, though. what you will get over the next few hours. a few passing clouds to once in a while mix in with the blue sky. you saw the cold air out of minnesota yesterday for the football game. the vikings and the seahawks there. tremendously cold air. heading in for a play-off football game.

well, that is now over the great lakes. kicking offer lake-effect snow. we are watching this area of low pressure dropping through the northern plains. that is going to swing through the midwest. the energy continues to gather its steam here. you know, a little built of moisture produces some rain and snow showers for us. even some heavier bursts of precipitation near day's end tomorrow. initially, starting off as rain along the coastline early tomorrow evening, then transitioning over to some snow. even in the city of boston, i expect some snowflakes to mix on in. to an inch in the city of boston. one to two inches through worcester. back through 495 into southern new hampshire. definitely a change of pace yesterday. right, danielle? >> danielle: yeah, exactly right. yesterday we had record high temperatures in boston. and worcester. getting up to 58 degrees. the old record was 56 in boston. the high in worcester was 56 as well. old record was 53. what a difference 24 hours makes.

penn interviewed guzman through blackberry messenger. in the interview, guzman admitted that drugs destroy. but he said that unfortunately, where he grew up, there was no other way to survive. penn says guzman agreed to take questions after a 7-hour meeting in october. three months after guzman escaped from prison. according to penn, this picture awe thent case that meeting. in the interview, el chapo told penn "i supply more heroin, cocaine, and marijuana than anybody else in the world." the mexican navy captured guzman on friday. according to the attorney general, guzman's desire to make movie about himself and his interactions with producers and actors led to his arrest. one mexican official confirmed that investigators learned details about el chapo's whereabouts through intercepted phone calls from penn and del castillo. >> the mexican authorities want to identify as many people closely associated with

toddler's mother who blames mccarthy for the death is lying. >> sarah: 7 news now turning to the weather. a cold and windy morning kicking off the workweek. on the way. let's send it over to meteorologist chris lambert with more. >> chris: we are looking for the snow to start warning working in late tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening. it is cold and windy outside. this afternoon, not much has changed since sunrise this morning. winds gusting at times over 0 miles an hour. we will continue to see that through the afternoon. we will continue to see also mostly sunny skies. that is the tradeoff there. temperatures running generally into the low to middle 30's this afternoon. then sliding back to the 20's by the ride home from work. as we get into tomorrow, dry morning commute. i'm not worried about the morning commute tomorrow. later in the afternoon and into the evening, some rain and snow does develop and break out. there will be some slick spots likely. especially north and west of early evening hours. this is all gone by the wednesday morning commute. but north and west of boston, especially out near 495, north and west, certainly, by the evening commute there, could

venue in sturbridge. guestsay they were sleeping in their rooms when all of a sudden, the smoke alarms started going off. flames were right outside of their doors. hay say, again, they are just lucky to be alive. thick smoke and heavy flames woke jamie and her family up early sunday morning. just hours after seeing her sister get married. >> it was a family event. we had family from all over come in. we got woken up at 3:30 in the morning. banging on the door. you know, there is trucks everywhere. my family is like in their pajamas. they were like, all of our suffer the was in flames. not something you expected for a wedding. >> kris: flamed ripped through in sturbridge. sending wedding guests running from their motel rooms. >> one of my family members, the flames were right out of the door. they ran out the back door. it is crazy to think of the roof collapsing. actually, a couple of people were trapped in there. >> kris: firefighters rescued three people who were trapped. the fire chief says no one was hurt.

>> there were several weddings on the property. at that time of the morning, after a long night of entertainment, it is very possible somebody flicked a cigarette. >> kris: all 16 guest rooms were destroyed. several vehicles were also damaged in the fire outside of the hotel. kris anderson, 7 news. >> sarah: boston police are investigating the first homicide of 2016. officials say man was shot and killed early sunday morning on falcon street in east boston. police are still working to identify that victim. so far no, arrests have been made. police are also searching for suspects after a stabbing in mattapan. investigators were seen collecting evidence on wood apartments. condition. >> christa: happening today: students at an elementary school in winchendon are headed back to class after a norovirus outbreak. classes were canceled on friday at the school.

cleaning crews disinfected the building, though, over the weekend. today massachusetts house speaker robert delee owe set to talk about a new bill aimed at fighting opioid abuse. the bill would limit first-time painkiller prescriptions to a 7-day supply. it would require evaluations for overdose victims who seek help at the hospital. however, the bill will not go as far as the one that was proposed by the state's governor charlie baker which would allow doctors to commit a person to a drug treatment facility involuntarily. >> sarah: attorney general maura healey unveiled a proposal in november after looking into the legality of fantasy sports. the changes could include age and advertising restrictions for sites such as draftkings and rival fanduel. >> christa: in oregon, a small armed group has taken over a national wildlife refuge. they want federal land to be controlled by locals. now the mother of the group's

real cold stuff back across you saw that in minnesota yesterday. for the seahawks and vikings game. -6 at kickoff. that is real cold air. right? that is passing over the relatively warm waters of the great lakes. that is kicking off a lot of lake-effect snow. what we are watching, we will have an alberta clipper copping down. ... klimer coming down. this is close enough and potent enough that we have enough moisture and energy coming in. we will tap into some moisture and snow and rain showers breaking out late into tomorrow. we start off as rain showers and then flip over to some snow as we enter the evening hours. i don't expect a ton of snow. we will likely have some slippery spots. especially north and west of boston. a couple of inches certainly a possibility from worcester to fitchburg. kofting to an inch in boston. after we change over from the rain activity.

mixing in for once here. way too warm to support any of that snow yesterday during the big rainstorm. right, danielle? >> danielle: that's right. rain, wind, and record-breaking warmth. what a combo. we got to 58 yesterday in boston. we set a record there in worcester. old record was 53. we set a record there as well. what a difference 24 hours makes. now temptures have dropped over 20 degrees in worcester. we are down 14 degrees in boston. down 19 in plymouth. we have the wind, too. our temperatures are really feeling like they are in the 20's out there. and that wind is going to stay with us as we head into tonight. those westerly gusts. around 30 miles per hour. if you are heading home from work this evening. around 6:45. they will start to diminish overnight. really, we are not going to talk about those calm conditions until tomorrow. and temperatures will be we will be appreciating these calm winds. at least we have the sunshine, though, today. right, chris? >> chris: that is absolutely right, danielle. we are not adding much insult
