been tracking thi looks like we're finally going to put some amounts on this map, right, jr? yeah of course, i think locations south of new england they be in the proverbial jackpot. for a change not in new england. we had our fair share of that last winter so time for somebody else to carry the load. here's the storm right here moving out of the rockies. it's bundled up with energy, scooping out of the gulf of mexico and reaching the seaboard and then from there the track is still a challenge. where does it go once it comes off the eastern seaboard? we know the storm's happening, we know that the mid atlanta sick going to get the brunt of the storm. how far north does the storm come up into new england? it is still a challenge, even right now, because these powerhouse storms, there's usually a sharp cut-off going from alls sorts of snow to much adieu about nothing. so the risk of heavy snow focused south of new england and then as you take a closer look

think across new hampshire and the corridor there's no shot of heavy snow at this time, the way i see it. but farther south, there is a slight risk of some locally heavier snow amounts down along the south coast, perhaps portions of the southshore. so a plowable snow, meaning 2 inches of more. there might be patchy snowflakes and flurries saturday evening and saturday night. 1 to 3 inches in metro boston is what i'm leaning on right now. i'm just kind of talking my way through this with you and down through the south coast this area is most likely to pick up the accumulating snow, 2, 3, 4, 5 inches of snow. there might even be one more area within a mile of the water right at the south coast and than 6 inches of snow. the other concern is gonna be the stwroingd. again, we'll be focused south of new england because that's closest to the storm. major flooding there. but we have the high tide to watch out for saturday night and sunday morning and there likely

heroin deaths, opiate deaths, addiction ravaging families and community across the state. >> reporter: speaking passionately from the podium, attorney general mora healy announcing a new weapon in the war against opiate addiction, a crackdown in those giving out pills. >> opioid prescribing in the united states has increased 140% since the mid to late 1990s. there were 4.6 million prescriptions for opioids, 4.6 million prescriptions in the state last year alone. >> reporter: the attorney general forming a task force along with other agencies to stop the overprescribing of pills. the coalition will be targeting doctors, pharmacies and others responsible for giving out these drugs. in an attempt to stop the addictions and overdoses in their tracks. >> this is one step, just one step, but it's an important step. what we want to shut down are

there prescribing to people who have no business receiving this. >> you might be asking how are they gonna do this, they say every time someone fills these prescriptions it's logged into a database and that's how the state will keep track. the ag's office says they've already charged one doctor in the western part of our state, in the control room, kelly o'hare , a 7news. new at 4:30, a man arrested in worcester at a breakfast honoring martin luther king junior was called in today. organizers at this event say he was passing out flyers and asked out. according to the worcester telegram he pled not guilty to several charges in court today including assault and battery on a police officer. new cell phone video capturing the panic on a platform when a man opened fire at maverick t station. two victims are seen lying on the ground, bleeding there on the platform at the maverick station yesterday.

a train, another opened fire while still on board. they say the suspect ran waft, still shooting, and that's when a second man was hit. police are now searching for that suspect. many residents getting vocal, telling members of the oregon occupation that they have worn out their welcome. about a dozen of supporters making a surprise appearance last night. their arrival adding to an already emotionally-charged atmosphere and many people say they've had enough of that occupation. >> i can't thank you for the disruption to our county, to my home. >> it's time for you to go home. [ cheering ] >> the group is occupied the refuge for 18 days protesting federal land use. >> caught on camera, don't mess with this momma, she fought off three would-be carjackers as they try to steal her car. that mother and her children are okay, and the suspects behind bars. 7's alex shows us how they were

this is what a determined mom looks like, watch as she grabs a would-be carjacker and launches him away from her car. surveillance video shows the two men sprint across the tom thumb gas station parking lot and try to carjack a woman on the other side of the gas pump. she locked herself inside. the men then tried to carjack that mom we showed you. she owns this red car. one gets in the passenger's seat, the other in the driver's seat, but the victim fights back and rips a ski mask off the carjacker. reason. >> she was a mom. and with that bad guy didn't know that, in the backseat of the car were two kids, and she taken. so she fought, dragged the guy out of the car and they both ran away like cowards. >> reporter: hialeah police chief says the two hijackers ran to a getaway car driven by rebecca u ty a, their high-speed getaway caught the attention of

>> a hialeah police patrolman, who had no idea of what just happened, sees is this car speeding, follows the car, the fence. >> reporter: all three were arrested and booked on charges of attempted carjacking and >> no. i'm in the process. >> reporter: the judge has ordered all three to stay away from the two women they are accused of trying to carjack if they post bond. and these three are still in jail on bond. the good news in all of this, no one was hurt. reporting from hialeah, 7news. lifeguards in california are on high alert during crashing cliffs. a large bluff has opened up in san diego and could collapse anytime a danger to surfers in the water and anyone walking on the cliffs or beach there. >> the base of the cliff has weakened and now the top's gonna fall forward and catch up with the base. >> they need to fence it off down there. just keep people out.

result of el nino rains hammering down tonight the drought-ridden region there. a geologist is investigating. a good samaritan in florida makes a i would rescue when dangerous weather leaves some baby owls homeless. three birds all less than a -- less than a month old were found near a collapsed tree after a recent storm. wildlife teams warned all three owls were in incubators but only one survived and they say there's little chance any of them would have made in on their own. >> the tree has been split open so there was no nest to put them back into. the parents had left, the nest was gone. >> teams are hand-feeding the surviving owl, which will eventually learn to eat on his own and be released back into the wild. at least they could save that one. >> yeah, exactly. so cute. >> so cute. ahead on 7news, mother nature's masterpiece giving people along lake erie an awe-inspiring sight. and what a panthers player

appeared just a few days ago. now take a look at it. not as dramatic but still pretty incredible and plenty of other photographers out in the bitter cold to get their own shots. >> it's after the storm and it's really nice out here. i mean, it's cold, but it's nice. >> arctic air is going across lake erie which hasn't frozen over just yet. >> when the wind comes through the leaves get big and splashes up into the air and coats these wonderful light posts that we have and we get these nice ice sculptures. >> reporter: when the wind changes direction, so do the cool designs. icing over geese that didn't fly south fast enough. this was blocked in ice. just how long will the ice be around. >> probably, hopefully march, not any later than that, but it will stay frozen for quite while. >> because the ice tends to change so quickly a number of areas on the shore are closed over concerns of falling ice.

teens. tomorrow, mostly sunny skies. low 30s tomorrow, still at the bit of a chilly breeze through the day tomorrow and friday lots of sunshine. friday's a great winter day. take the kids skiing with temperatures running in the lower 30s. so right now we still have winds actually tied to a storm up in eastern canada that's slowly moving away and will continue to do so dispom more so on friday to make way for the next storm. here it is, here, this will be a beast of the storm. carving out a path across the southern tier of states and into the southeast, pick up moisture out of the gulf of mexico and once it gets to the eastern seaboard really a tense high. this is headed for the mid atlantic states. new new england we are right on the northern edge of this powerhouse storm so the risk of heavy snow, i think it's only slight at best for new england. you have to head farther south, this would be during the day

so traveling down the 95 corridor, once you get to new york city and south of there, looks real rough, especially philadelphia, baltimore, washington d.c., richmond, fredericksburg. in locations they have not seen a storm like this in several years. we have had our fair share over the last few years, especially last year, but the rest of heavy snow meaning 6 or more inches of snow, i think it's confined to extreme southeastern new england because we are on the northern edge of the storm and usually with these big storms there is a drastic cut-off in your snowfall potential, meaning along the south coast, you may end up with 6, 7, 8 inches of snow right at the water's edge and you work your way up to fall river, it's half of that plowable snow, 2 or more inches of snow not likely. boston 1 to 3 inches of snow possible it with this event and the area most likely to see two or more inches of snow will be

44 down to the south coast, and the other concern would be the wind, the strongest wind focused on the mid atlantic coastline. the saturday night high tide and sunday morning midday high tide, heavy a.m. sunday morning, we'll watch for you. might be minor coastal flooding sunday morning high tide because of northeasterly wind piling water at the coastline and pinging that water at the coastline as the high tide comes in midday on sunday. , the pisk of patchy flurries saturday night. i don't think you have to cancel your dinner plans on saturday night but get to the restaurant and out in denver by the way on sunday for that football game, afc championship kicking off at rainshowers in denver, warmer than boston.
