professionals. >> winter weather, a storm is brewing in the southern plaines and could be headed our way, which means parts of our area could be getting some heavy snow this weekend. >> how concerned should we be here in new england? meteorologist jeremy reiner joins us now with the answer. >> yeah, right now the thinking is that new england is on the northern edge of this powerhouse storm. i think the brunt of the storm will be to our south, south of new england down toward the mid atlantic states. but south of the masspike, you folks are most likely to pick up any significant snow. there will be a drastic cut-off to the accumulating snow, which we usually see in these big storms. in new england right now we do have a few clouds and leftover wind for the next couple of days which will carry this weather system down in the mid atlantic states out to sea. but this the event is over here.

a lot of energy. there's no short an of moisture with this storm system and no shortage of cold air either. but it's the code high pressure that i think helps us out because this thing is robust not going to move. it's going to block the storm from barreling up into new england. and even with a more southerly track, i still think there will be some snow and wind to contend with here on saturday night and sunday morning. with the more southerly track the greatest confidence of seeing significant snow. a foot or more of snow metro d.c., as well as baltimore, even up to metro new york city. then you move north of the suburbs in new york city and southern new england, there is the slight chance of significant snowy i would define as six or more inches of snow. metro boston, i'm thinking a coating to an inch. that sharp cut-off once you move north of the masspike, a lot of

pockets where the ground gets coated. storm will generate a lot of wind, as well, and that combined with the astronomical high tides will lead to minor coastal flooding at the high tides. sunday morning. right now the sunday morning might be more concern because of northeast wind saturday night, 45 miles per hour. higher on the cape, upwards of 50 miles per hour and northeast wind will pin water along the southshore and cape cod bay. that's why we have concern for minor to perhaps moderate coastal flooding as we work into the weekend. we'll talk more about the next couple of days in a few minutes. the patriots in the play-offs gearing up for some rival revenge against the denver broncos. pats fell short this year in a regular season match-up but this time around the stakes are a lot higher as the team looks to earn their second straight trip to the super bowl. trey daerr is live in foxboro with the very latest on the pats' preparation.

leading up to the afc championship game, the 17th meeting between peyton manning and tom brady, even though these are the two starting quarterbacks, the best two teams in the afc, this may be the most unexpected map-up in the rivalry's history. as we all know back in week 17 tom brady and the patriots going into miami, dropping their fourth of six games, the worst stretch ever in the belichick brady era. looked inconsistent ant at times at best on offense. meanwhile, manning playing his active back-up on his first game on the feed. the route may have been uncommon but the level of respect for the greatest rivalry remains at an all-time high. >> i think this is the consistency, the durability, his ability to -- you know, always seem to come through, so he's just been an incredible player,

announced new efforts to help tackle addiction. kelli o'hara was there and joins us with more on the new strategy. >> yeah, the attorney general cracking down on the people giving out the prescriptions. >> we are paying the price for that right now. here in communities across our state. >> reporter: paying the price for the overprescription of pills, open yailt pills, and attorney general mora healy says she's not gonna take it anymore. we all know that we're in the midst of a terrible heroin crisis, opiate deaths, addiction ravaging communities across the state. >> reporter: healy says our had heroin epidemic here in the bay state has taken thousands of lives in the past few years, starts with these prescriptions and it needs to stop. that's why healy is announcing a new weapon in the opiate addiction, a crackdown on those giving out the pills. >> there were 4.6 million

4.6 million prescriptions for opioids in the state last year alone. this is dangerous stuff. it's dangerous to the patients, dangerous to those who are -- who have access to this medication. >> reporter: a new multi-agency task force will be targeting doctors, pharmacies and others responsible for giving out these drugs. in an attempt to stop the spread of these addictions and overdoses. >> this is one step, just one step, but it's an important step. >> reporter: what we -- >> what we want to shut down are the prescribers who are out there prescribing to people who have no business receiving this. >> and the task force says every time someone fills one of these prescriptions, it's logged to a database so they know who wrote it and where it was filled and say that is where they're going to start. in the newsroom, kelli o'hara, 7news. a man arrested in worcester during a breakfast honoring martin luther king junior facing a young today. video shows christopher horton on the ground monday as officers

organizers at event says he was passing out flyers and asked police toes court him out. he pled not guilty to several charges in court today including assault and battery on a police officer. we're following more news here today. frustrations continue to spill over in flint, michigan as the city continues to deal with this contaminated water supply. michigan's governor is planning answers and actions as federal investigations do continue. >> reporter: bottled water continues to pour into flint, michigan along with controversy and concern over the city's water crisis. >> water is a basic human right and everybody deserves clean water. >> reporter: residents in flint haven't had clean water since april of 2014. to save money the city began using the flint river as itself source for water supply. and tests showed elevated levels of lead in that water but officials insisted it was safe despite warnings and data from doctors that showed an alarming level of lead in children's blood.

weeks, nearly two years after it started, that governor snyder declared a state of emergency and asked for federal help. today the embattled governor has promised to release two years of email regarding the situation in flint after proposes transparency during his state of state address tonight. i'm saying tonight i'm sorry and i will fix it. >> i'm sorry does not bring back the health and welfare of those people and these children's future. >> reporter: a future that remains as uncertain -- [ chanting ] >> reporter: as the water. >> president obama spoke about the flint water crisis at an event in detroit today. he says he met personally with the town's mayor and federal coordinator making sure everyone in flyability will get what they need. lawyers for four police officers charged in the death of freddie gray back in court today. a judge rejected a request from the prosecution to force one of the officers to testify against three of his colleagues. officer william porter's trial ended in december, with a mistrial. he will be retried in june.

whether he will testify against a fourth officer caesar goodson. goodson was driving the van, carrying freddie gray to jail back in april. gray died after suffering a spinal injury during that ride. many people getting vocal telling members of the oregon occupation that they have worn out their welcome but a dozen supporters making a surprise panes at a weekly community meeting last night, their annual arrival to the already emotionally-charged atmosphere there. many people say they have avenue had enough of the occupation. >> you know, i can't thank you for the disruption to our county, to my home. >> it's time for you to go home. [ applause ] police in louisiana are investigating a burned-out lambrghini that was owned by a man previously hired to remove confederate monuments in new orleans.

this, his 200,000 dollar lamborghini completely destroyed. the owner recently quit the project to remove four confederate monuments in new orleans after receiving death threats. city leaders say the crime is unacceptable. >> death threats are not free speech. you are crossing the line when you burn someone's property in a public place, you are breaking the law. it's a clear criminal behavior. and it should not be tolerated. >> the removal of the statues has become a controversial issue in new orleans and groups have filed federal lawsuits against the city to stop the monuments from being taken down. checking on other news across the country now. a dangerous drive in texas, a fire truck slamming right into a dairy queen but it wasn't a firefighter behind the wheel. police say the truck was being fixed and someone from the repair shop was driving it back to the firehouse. the driver and one person inside the dq were hurt. an apartment building in philadelphia goes up in flames last night and completely frozen over today.

battled the four-alarm fire and freezing temperatures overnight turned the the building into this. two firefighters were hurt, but everyone living in the building did get out safely. a valet in miami getting a firey lesson. he was handed the keys to this $400,000 lamborghini and rather than pash the super car,, he revved the engine causing flames to shoot out of the exhaust there. you can see people trying to frantically extinguish those flames. a frightening moment for one australian woman. a car crashes into a service nation and the woman narrowly escapes. surveillance cameras were rolling as the whole thing unfoldedded. you can see a car plowing through the front glass wall. a woman walks towards the counter and seconds later thrown to the ground. >> i think -- >> still no word on what caused the crash. three people inside the car were taken to the hospital. a fourth man, who's believed to be the driver, is missing. all right, still to come, one tough mom isn't letting

three would-be carjackers meeting their match with one mighty mom she fought them off with her children in the backseat. today her mother and children are okay. >> the suspects are now behind bars. alex has more on the wild scene. >> this is what a determined mom looks like, watch as she grabs a would-be carjacker and launches him away from her car. surveillance video shows the two men skimmed across the tom thumb gas station parking lot and tried to carjack a woman on the other side of the gas pump. she locked herself in. the men then tried to carjack that mom we showed you. she owns this red car. one gets in the passenger's seat, the other in the driver's seat, but the victim fights back

carjacker. she fought back for a good reason. >> she was a mom, and with that bad guy didn't know in the backseat of that car were two kids, and she wasn't going to let them be taken, so she fought, she dragged the guy out the car and they both ran away >> reporter: hialeah police say the would-be carjackers, gonzalez and nicholas rosato ran to a getaway car driven by rebecca utia and it caught the attention of a hialeah police officer. >> a hialeah police patrolman who had no idea what just happened, sees the car speeding, follows the car. the car ends crashing against a fence. >> reporter: all three were arrested and booked on charges of attempted carjacking and fleeing police. >> are you working? no. i'm in the process. >> reporter: the judge has ordered all three to stay away from the two women they are accused of trying to carjack if they post bond. and these three are still in jail on bond.

elsewhere, bedford at 27, hyannis at 31. nantucket at 34. but wind all across southern new england. a loss of sunshine tomorrow. still some wind out there tomorrow but not quite as feisty as we had out there today and still have right now. >> lower 30s, and each of these next couple of afternoons running below normal. we have not seen a strain of three or more days where you have below normal temps at any point this winter. but this that kind of a winter thus far. so storm up in the maritimes now, out of the merit types, the backside of the storm still generating wind. area of low pressure in the southern rockies, southern plaines will scoot across the deep south overnight tonight and hang out in the southeast during the day tomorrow and really become a powerhouse storm. i think for us, and looked like

more in this direction, will be on the northern edge of the storm system but when you have these big storms and it be kind of cuts south of new england it leaves us on a sharp cut-off where you go from all sorts of snow to absolutely nothing at all. and i think that's the challenge that we still face here in southern new england. so this will do a left-hand turn and come up in new england and we'd be talking a foot or more snow. very confident that the heaviest of the snow is gonna through the middle atlantic states and as you come out the middle atlantic and move

there's a slight risk of steadier heavier snow down along the south coast but again confined to the south of route 44. on and off light snow around metro boston with 1 to 3 inches of snow on the south side of the metro. a flurry might lead to a coating and head to the merrimack valley and i don't think you have any more than the occasional flurry. the storm will generate a lot of northeast wind so we are concerned about minor coastal flooding on the southshore, more so than the northshore. the southshore, as well, as portions of cape cod bay funnels in from the northeast. the 11:00 p.m. high tide on saturday, you should watch, and perhaps the slightly greater concern is sunday 11:00 a.m. high tide with some pockets of minor to occasionally moderate coastal flooding. of course here in new england we're dealing with patchy snow sunday. the pats are out in denver and have a milder day than we do
