>> sarah: first at noon, we are tracking winter weather right now. the mid-atlantic. preparing for this monster storm. the washington area had a traffic meltdown over one inch of snow. now there are serious questions about how the area will handle a possible foot of snow. part of the country right now. but it's chugging along. and should hit places like d.c. and virginia by the weekend. so how will there storm affect us here? of course, we have been watching it really closely. let's send it over to chris lambert who has been tracking the system. >> chris: we are right on the northern edge of this storm as we work through the weekend. going to his the brunt of the snow. this doesn't mean we won't get any snow or wind around here. here is the energy we are watching. diving down toward the deep south. that is going to trigger severe weather down through the deep south. then explode into a powerful ocean storm off the carolina coastline. we will likely see bands and bands of heavy snow hammering towns and cities like philadelphia, down through baltimore, down into d.c.

this storm won't work its way too far north and east. you would like to see a track south and east of nantucket to bring in a ton of snow across much of southern new england. instead, it stays too far to the south. however, we will still get some snow. more susceptible to heavier bands of snow, the timing on that would likely start in the afternoon. and the best chance for some snow in boston, late afternoon into overnight in the city of boston. again, these aren't big numbers. because they are right on the fringe of this storm. so maybe a coating to an inch of snow north and west of boston. close to an inch or so in the city. then higher amounts the farther south you go. especially down through interior southeastern massachusetts. stretching back into southern bristol county. rhode island back into connecticut. storm. no question about it. you may go close to nothing to a foot of snow in parts of rhode island. we have to keep an eye on this storm for adjustments in the

as of now, that is the way it looks. we are watching strong northeasterly winds. saturday night into sunday morning. the best chance of coastal flooding coinciding with the high tide on sunday morning. coming in at 11:00. it looks like minor coastal flooding and beach erosion will be widespread. perhaps pockets of moderate coastal flooding as well. especially further east to northeast on east-facing beaches. places like scituate or if you head down into sandwich. with the ocean water getting pushed toward you, you have the best shot of some pockets of moderate coastal flooding. still a lot to consider over the weekend. you know, we are not getting off this really easy. compared to what they are going to see across the mid-atlantic, certainly, looks like we will miss the brunt of the storm. >> sarah: that winter weather causing problems in d.c. already. a tough morning for commuters in the nation's capital. jim cantore has more on the problems and what could happen in the coming days. >> reporter: well, if last night was any precursor as to what's to come, we are in big

erika murray stood in court today as the attorneys went through this case. she is accused of a lot of charges and accused of murdering two of her babies. a third newborn body was found inside the home with the umbilical cord still attached. her attorney does want those two murder charges, along with the reckless endangerment charges dismissed, saying there is no evidence of the cause of death or any evidence her children. the babies' bodies were found inside a house of horrors. trash and feces piled up inside the blackstone home. murray's four other children ranging from five month old to 13 years old were all living there. the two youngest children were kept hidden. the defense also saying the police willfully sought a search warrant of that home that was way too broad and that's the search warrant that led to the discovery of the newborn remains. they want a hearing on that as well. murray's boyfriend is also living in the home. he is also facing charges.

the victim was taken to a boston hospital. drivers in massachusetts may be forced to put down their cell phones. the state senate will debate a bill that would ban the use of hand health electronic devices while driving. the finds seem to be one of the main points of the debate. right now, the bill calls for a fine of $100 for the first violation to $50... $250 for the second. and $500 for every violation after. that after three or more violations, offenders would be hit with an insurance surcharge as well. this bill would only allow for drivers to use an iphone in hands-free mode. manually entering information into your gps while driving would be banned. there are exceptions, though. in this bill. for emergency situations. if the bill becomes law, massachusetts would join 14 other states that ban the use of handheld electronic devices

>> sarah: we are following breaking news out of methuen. police responding to yet another threat of a bomb threat at methuen high school. school officials say this is just a copycat after yesterday's incident. so of course, this is video, though, from wednesday's hoax. we have learned a student wrote this threat on a piece of paper. that student has admitted he wrote the note, telling officials he just wanted to get out of school. so he has since been arrested. police say this is not connected to the rash of threats across the state. it is just a copycat. switching gears now. let's talk about your forecast. chris lambert, everybody keeping an eye on the storm for the weekend. >> chris: yeah. it's been in the forecast for quite some time. we have had some nice weather lately here. the breeze not as strong as yesterday. still a breeze out there. not overpowering. 30 right now. that wind about 10-20 miles an hour. we will keep that 10-20-mile-per-hour wind. as we go through the remainder of the day. windchill factors down into the teens and lower 20's. pretty much what you see is what you get here over the next couple of days. do expect temperatures close

this is going to be the same case again tomorrow. so what is going on with this storm? and where sit heading? over to danielle for. that >> danielle: thanks, chris. yeah. all of the energy is out towards the midwest. as it tracks southeast today, we are going to see the risk for severe weather across many of the gulf coast states. now, this area in the orange is where we have an enhanced risk for severe weather. damaging winds, hail, tornadoes, even possible for parts of new orleans, up to alabama and mississippi for today. now, then the storm will start to track up the east coast, up the carolina coast and then this is the threat as we head into tomorrow for parts of washington and into new york, new jersey,. now, all these areas in blue and pink, these are winter storm watches and warnings. and then in the green here, from philadelphia, d.c., baltimore, all under this up to new york city, this is a blizzard watch.

areas tomorrow afternoon. for some areas tomorrow night. these areas could seal one to two feet of snow. for more on how this storm could impact us, chris, back to you. >> chris: too close for comfort here. when you see these blizzard watches in long island. you say, is that going to come up into southern new england? i'm going say. no the heavy snow stays south of us. although we will get some snow in here saturday afternoon, saturday night, into sunday. and the wind and the coastal flood threat still is there. even if the heavy snow stays south of us. we will get a gusty wind along the coastline. especially over the cape and the islands. we expect winds to gust 5-40. heaviest snow risk, we have those blizzard watches and warnings in place. stretching from long island back down into d.c. at this point. you take a look at the sharp cutoff here. the high risk for heavy snow in new york city. then a slight risk over connecticut. there will be a huge gradient in snow totals. looks like we are just on the fringe of it here in southern new england. still expecting some snow the

boston you go, up through the merrimack valley, southern new hampshire: not much more than a dusting. patchy flurries that way. your best chance for half a foot of snow down into bristol county, southern half of bristol county. back into the southern half of rhode island as we have some more moisture there. look at the totals. down through long island. close to a foot of snow there. it is a sharp cutoff. we are still two, two and a half days away from snow falling. there could be some wiggling of the forecast as we go through here. right now, staying put. that is what it looks like in terms of the heavy snow, staying south of us. winds will be gusty saturday afternoon. already gusting 25-30 miles an hour along the coastline. higher winds at night. coastline. even a few gusts to 50. you note the wind direction. out of the northeast. and then out of the north. ocean water toward the coastline. i do expect some minor to moderate coastal flooding. major flooding along the

that storm is over the central part of the country right now. but it is chugging along and should hit places like d.c. and virginia by the weekend. so how will that storm affect us? we have been watching it closely all week long. let's send it over to chris lambert. he has been tracking the system. >> chris: sarah, right on the northern eng of that storm. that is where southern new england resides. this energy diving toward the deep south, will continue to collect a lot of moisture from the gulfle of mexico. only a footle of snow in d.c. some places will be closer to two feet of snow. that? at least it is the weekend. many people will stay put for all right. low pressure really bombing off of the virginia coastline. this will slide east to southeast. it was going to come more to the northeast and pass southeast of nantucket. we would have a better chance of seeing a widespread significant snow and strong winds. i think that one to two-foot range, though, will reside mostly across the mid-atlantic. although there is a sharp

i do expect some snow to reach the southern new england coastline as early as saturday afternoon. in the boston area, maybe a little built of snow in here late afternoon on saturday. saturday night. this will all wind down early on sunday morning. by about 7:00 or 8:00. what snow we have should be ending. perhaps a little bit of lingering snow down through the cape and the islands. at that point. we are on the northern fringe of this. i don't expect particularly high totals. especially north and west of boston. but you get close to the city. some accumulating snow. the best chance for two, three go. then you hit southern bristol county. southern plymouth county. away from the coastline. the likelihood of a few inches of snow is a good bet. if not closer to a half a foot of snow perhaps into southern bristol county. right along the coastline and from hyannis points east, we may have some mixing issues. you have to remember, the water temperatures are warm. we may have temperatures close to 36, 37 for a while. a foot of snow on long island. you get the point here. a sharp gradient from north to

it looks like it's just enough of this storm. we will break out with some light snow. and perhaps pockets of moderate snow and heavy snow down through far southeastern massachusetts by saturday afternoon into sunday morning. coastal wind a threat. and flood threats. we do have that. before we talk more on this, over to danielle. yeah. in the midwest. it is going to track southeast today. and bring the threat of enhanced severe weather to starts. and orange here, this is where tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail today. and then what's going happen, this storm will start to track up the east coast, up the carolina coast. and move towards us. but before that, throughout the day tomorrow, and into saturday, it is going to bring a lot of snow to the mid-atlantic states. and so because of that, we have winter storm watches, warnings, even blizzard watches and warnings posted for all of these areas. now, notice in red here for d.c. and baltimore, this is a

into effect. there they could see one to two feet of snow. for new york, this is a blizzard storm watch. into philadelphia, new jersey as well. how the storm will impact us, for more on that, chris, back to you. >> chris: you look at the 95 stretch. typically, you see the weather working up the 95 corridor into southern new england. these storms will stop just short and slild off to the east. we are going to hammer snow and wind from new york city down into d.c. it is a sharp cut-off. you get north of long island southern connecticut. that gradient goes from a foot of snow in long island to not much in northern connecticut. as it stands right now, i expect us to be on the fringe of this storm: meaning there is not much accumulating in terms of snowfall north and west of boston. forecast maybe a coating to an inch in some towns and then south of the city, the best chance for a few inches, the farther you get down towards southeastern massachusetts. and the best chance to pick up a half a foot of snow likely, into southern bristol county at this point.

heavy snow. especially west, away from the coastline. with ocean temperatures running so mild still. we may have some mixing issues down across the cape and down across the immediate coastal plymouth county. there you go. just to show you how sharp this gradient is from a foot of snow in long island to hardly anything in northern certainly, something we have to keep an eye on. if it does track farther north or south, we will have to adjust those totals for the better or for the worse here. major coastal flooding. that is expected in new jersey down through the mid-atlantic. southern new england, even if we don't get a lot of snow out of, this we will get strong enough winds and a prolonged wind out of the northeast. there will be some minor to pockets of moderate coastal flooding. for a northeasterly wind will pin some of the water close to the shorelines. and the tide is os stro no, ma'amcally high.

11:00 p.m. the sunday morning high tide, i think you have a better shot at seeing some coastal flooding out of this one. boston's minor coastal flooding. high tide around 11:00. scituate to sandwich, minor to pockets of moderate coastal flooding. east to northeast-facing shorelines. same case for nantucket. northern shore, most susceptible to coastal flooding. the forecast: the snow should wrap up early sunday morning. 7:00, 8:00 in the morning. then we will dry out for the afternoon. above freezing to start next week. >> sarah: caught on camera: an avalanche that could have a snowboarder facing criminal he was wearing a camera on friday. he boarded down a run in california. the whole thing was recorded. the snow buried him. thankfully, whenever not hurt. that area has been closed to the public since 2010. by snowboarding there, he triggered that avalanche, putting people at risk. a frightening flip in brazil
