>> christa: cities along the east coast preparing for a blizzard. nashville, tennessee already in it right now. drivers struggling to get through all that snow. >> nancy: that system has destruction. this in mississippi. tornado-like conditions toppling trees and damaging homes there. >> christa: passengers scrambling at airports. hundreds of flights are canceled. many could be grounded up and down the east coast. good afternoon, everybody. a state of emergency has

pennsylvania. maryland, virginia, tennessee, and north carolina. >> nancy: the big question: how will this storm affect new england? chris: we are right on the northern edge of the storm as we work into the weekend. there is no lack of cold air. nashville, tennessee, 29 there. even down into the carolinas, this cold air getting wedged in there. we will be dealing with snow and ice. as all of this moisture overrides that cold air at the low levels down across the carolinas. here is the storm. the main area of low pressure still to the west of atlanta. this is going to reform off the carolina coastline. and this create a powerful nor'easter for the mid-atlantic with bands of heavy snow backing. in even across long island, we do expect at times, getting close to blizzard conditions, there is a blizzard warning in effect for long island. in terms of our forecast, later tomorrow morning, mid to late morning, there may be some snow breaking out along the immediate south coast of new england. once we work our way into the

2:00, there is going to be a coastal front that sets up. we may, indeed, see some patchy light snow breaking out along that front. close to the city of boston through the northwestern worcester county. the better chance of the snow here would be late in the afternoon and early in the evening. blues are. they are farther to the south if not just offshore. there is going to be a battle night. from the dry cold air to the north. to the moisture trying to work in from the south. and there is going to be a tight gradient where the snow cuts offer. at least the heaviest of it. it looks like it is a good bet that this gets to long island, in terms of the heavy snow and perhaps the south coast of new england here. whatever we get for snow, this storm system is going to wrap up quickly on sunday morning. by 6:00, 7:00 in the morning, it is just windy. i expect the snow to be over and done with. again, tight line here. we are kind of riding that tight line. still on the forecast.

some of the higher amounts farther south you go along the south coast, one to three in the city of boston. there will be a coastal front. some of the moisture will nose in instability in here to give us up to a few inches in the southwestern suburbs of boston. so we have the snow. but we also have the wind. the wind gusting at times. 35-50 miles an hour. highest across the cape and the islands. in fact, the winds may gust across nantucket and down to the vineyard over 50. close to 60. high tides to watch tomorrow night, 11:00 p.m. as well as 11:00 a.m. on sunday. these are the high tides sunday morning. close to 11:00 a.m. from boston to sandwich. minor coastal flooding. if not pockets of major coastal flooding. sandwich over to scituate. wind speeds, here they are. gusting 40-50 miles an hour. we do get into sunday morning and saturday night. for more on what we expect watch-wise and advisory-wise, over the danielle. >> danielle: thanks, chris. tomorrow afternoon is when the high wind watch will go into effect for nantucket and for martha's vineyard. this is going to stay with us through sunday and these

anywhere from 30-40 miles per hour with sustained gusts up to 60 miles per hour. also, all of the cape, the islands, the south coast, that goes into effect tomorrow stays with us through sunday morning and these are the areas that could see the most snow. anywhere from three to six inches. all of new york city under a blizzard warning that begins tomorrow. stays in effect until sunday. and look, that stretchs all the way down into philadelphia, baltimore, d.c. where they could see record snowfall. now, all of the pink you are see, these are winter storm a lot of them already in effect. and this is where a lot of this snow is also falling throughout the mid-atlantic. so a lot to watch with this storm. of course, we are keeping an eye on it. we will have the full forecast coming up. back to you, guys. >> nancy: all right, thank you. this monster storm could dump as much as two feet of snow on washington, d.c. >> christa: right now, crews are hard at work preparing for the crippling weather.

this. we will head out live to the nation's capital. scott mclean is live there for us. scott? >> yeah. d.c. officials are expecting this storm to hit a little bit earlier than anticipated. sometime between the next one or two hours. possibly. they are expecting it to bring wet, heavy snow, the danger there is that it could down trees and possibly cause power outages. the message right now is to get people to go home. we have actually just gotten word the national park service is actually trying to close down the national mall. now, there is a demonstration going on here. it is anniversary of roe v. wade. it is going to be difficult to do that. what the city is trying to do is to get people to go home, get out of the way, hunker down for the next couple of days. it is all in anticipation of two and a half feet of snow. worth just in the next 36 hours. the east coast is bracing for

some 75 million people are in the storm's path. 30 million of them are facing blizzard conditions. six states in the u.s. have declared a state of emergency. state leaders are taking no chances. >> the most important thing is for the people of new york city to recognize saturday and sunday, don't go anywhere. be traveling. stay indoors. >> sometimes when ice comes down very quickly, even with pretreatment, when the ice comes as fast as it did, we were out yesterday with 500 trucks. just in northern virginia. >> and right in the bull's washington, d.c. preview of the storm wednesday night. into thursday. when just a light dusting left >> as soon as the snow started to fall, and there was no treatment on the road, it immediately froze. and once it froze, everything seized up traffic-wise. failed. >> more than 4,500 flights have been canceled across the u.s. as the heavy snow is expected

york city and philadelphia. >> they came really early. if they can get me on a plane, i'm happy. >> i'm still happy i'm going hawaii. >> reporter: now, as the storm starts to track north toward the capital, it has already caused big problems south of here. you are looking at a live shot from southern virginia. they are starting to see a heavy snow come down. in the carolinas, 18,000 people last week have been able... even as far as georgia, they have offered their help should >> nancy: all right, scott. thank you. as scott mentioned, this storm plans. airlines canceling flights left and right.

out of philadelphia's airport at all on saturday. meantime, here at home, passengers at logan are scrambling to get to their destinations. jonathan hall is there live now with the details. >> reporter: hey, nancy. ,000 flights have been canceled from coast to coast. and that includes 10 flying in and out of logan. england. and even though there is not much snow in the forecast here in boston, travelers are arriving at logan wary of those flight status screens. >> you thought it was going to be the end of the world last night. you watch the news. we woke up. i was surprised that there was straight through. we popped through atlanta. that was a great travel day. >> going through charlotte, >> yeah. we were lucky we went through atlanta. report t delta screens show flights canceled into richmond, baltimore. also known as bwi. these folks found a unique solution for their trip to fort myers which was supposed

. >> i took a proactive role. i rescheduled the flight twice to avoid bwi. so we are flying today from missouri. then we are changing planes to chicago, illinois. myers. >> that is going to be a long flight. >> it will be a long flight. it will be worth it to spend time with our folks. >> reporter: washington is expected to get up to two feet of snow this weekend. after the snow-mageddon we lived through a year ago, mayor walsh who was in washington, d.c. yesterday is offering the washington mayor some assistance. shiny new snow-blowers that haven't even been used here in the hub yet. >> i'm going to offer to her if she needs these snow-blowers to come to the city. we will help. last year, we had great help from around the country. >> reporter: so if you are flying to washington or baltimore today or tomorrow, you know you probably have some trouble on the way. call ahead. to check with your airline and

check the massport web site. live at logan, jonathan hall, >> christa: the pats are head off for the play-offs. from now. the team, of course, getting in a final morning practice at gillette before boarding a flight for sunday's showdown with the broncos in denver. players did speak with the media this morning before hitting the practice field. gillette. dan hausle has more on what they had to say today. dan? >> reporter: well, we are still waiting for those buses to arrive to take the players to denver. the weather giving bill belichick reason to smile. the weather still nice enough here that the team can take off. actually. weather. the players making sure they are continuing to work right up until the time they get on those buses. pats players waking up early today to get in one last practice here at home before heading to denver. players say they will take advantage of every available minute until they leave.

s.u.v. ended up underwater. >> it is pretty surprising. >> reporter: take a look at these dramatic images. after an s.u.v. with the windshield wipers swinging back and forth ends up on its side in an indoor swinning pool in this cambridge high-rise near the museum of science. >> this is the first car into a pool. you know, so right in the middle of winter, too. you know? >> reporter: fire officials tell us it happened late thursday night. the driver accidentally accelerated instead of braining. >> it did wake us up. we were in an hour before that. >> reporter: the driver somehow was able to shimmy himself out of the wreckage before he was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. >> hopefully, he is doing day. they say said minor injuries. hopefully, that is okay. yeah. >> reporter: as the clean-up gets under way, residents are

>> chris: good afternoon, everyone. we stay dry today through tonight. right along the immediate south coast. of southern new england. bristol county. bedford. midday some light snow pike. and out through the north shore. 28 right now in boston. 24 in worcester. we have had plenty of cold air. the breeze about 10-15 miles an hour. we have had a bit of a breeze today. not as strong as it was a few days ago. mostly sunny skies through the day. temperatures close to 30 degrees. this is the storm riding up the coastline. for more on what's going on with this and the rest of the country, over to danielle >> danielle:: that storm slowly inches towards us. we have a threat for severe weather down south towards

the greatest rigk will be over the florida peninsula. we could see strong winds, severe storms, everybody a tornado possible. then the storms continuing to shift northeast up the eastern seaboard. so because of that, we have watches and warnings in place across the mid-atlantic. everything you are seeing here in pink, this is a winter storm... excuse me. a winter storm warning. and then in red, this is where we have blizzard warnings. from d.c. up into philadelphia, new jersey, and into new york city. for d.c., up to two feet of snow possible. they could see record snowfall. then into philadelphia and new york, one to two feet of snow. here at home, under a winter storm watch. this goes into effect tomorrow morning. and then into sunday morning, for the cape, the islands, the south coast. for more on what we can expect here, back to you. >> chris: a very sharp cutoff for the precipitation. we have been talking about this pretty muchl all week long. point north. then a lot of precipitation will slide off to the east. that doesn't mean we are not going to get any snow. we will get some snow in here.

early afternoon. that patchy light snow close to the city of boston. even the northwestern suburbs, this will be along a coastal front that sets up here. that is why we do think we will get some snow close to the city of boston. through the northwestern suburbs. you see where the deeper blues are. most of them, the father south and east you go. the highest potential for the snow would be down near the south coast. in terms of getting the heaviest bands. even near boston north and west, there may be a sliver of one to three inches of snow. and locally, higher the farther south you go. maybe just south of foxboro, you can start getting into some threes and fours. that would be thanks to the coastal front. that kind of helps enhance what's going on. regardless of snow potential, we will get strong winds along the coast. at times, gusting 40-50 miles an hour. even close to 60 down across the vineyard and nantucket. that is going to push the

i expect with the astronomical high tide, to get in some minor coastal flooding in here. saturday, 11:00 high tide. and once again on sunday morning. this storm wraps up very quickly into sunday morning. by 7:00, 8:00 in the morning, this is offshore. it remains windy. more 7 news to come after the

>> christa: bracing for a blizzard. 75 million people in the path of an epic storm set to slam the east coast. tennessee drivers already struggling in the snow. >> nancy: that storm system has left a path of destruction already. this is in mississippi. tornado-like conditions destroying homes there. >> christa: more airlines canceling flights. passengers scrambling to gets where they want to go before the storm comes in earnest. a state of emergency has been declared in pennsylvania, maryland, virginia, tennessee, and north carolina.

affect new england? that is the big question here. >> chris: this storm is certainly going to hammer the mid-atlantic and down into long island. heavy snow working in as early as tomorrow morning. across long island. snow working in down through portions of buzzards bay, the cape and the islands. as early as mid to late morning down here. patchy light snow breaking out in the city of boston. and some of the northwestern suburbs as we work into the afternoon. later into the evening into the overnight hours, the steadiest snow, the farther south you go, there is a battle here between the dry air trying to intrude into this storm system and the ocean air and moisture trying to back on in. from the east and from the northeast. i do expect the highest accumulation sort of the farther south and east you go with this storm system. wraps up quickly. regardless of how much snow we get. wrapping up quickly on sunday morning. we will do some melting by monday and tuesday. as it stands now, one to three

south. a sharp cutoff north and west of worcester. up into southwestern new hampshire. i don't expect a lot of snow there right now out of this system. a lot of moisture with this system. it does look like a lot of this is just off to the south and east of us as of now. high tide coming in at 11:00 tomorrow night. 11:00 a.m. sunday. another one sunday night. all three of these prone to coastal flooding and beach erosion. we do expect winds to gust 40-50 miles an hour along the coastline. high tide in boston, on sunday morning, 11:10. scituate, 11:14. looks like scituate and sandwich, north-facing and northeast-facing places will get this driven toward you. i expect minor to moderate coastal flooding in those in termsle of wind gusts, here we go. cape. yes, even the islands exceeding 50 miles an hour tomorrow night into sunday morning. and even into sunday afternoon. going to remain gusty through

with the snow and with the wind, we do have some watches posted across the area. and for more on that, we will turn it over to danielle. danielle? >> danielle: thanks, chris. yes. certainly, those winds will be strong. let's start with that martha's vineyard-nantucket both under a high wind watch. this goes into effect tomorrow afternoon, stays with us through sunday morning. isolated winds, sustained winds. just 30-40 miles per hour. very strong. with gusts possible up to 60 miles per hour. tomorrow morning, also this winter storm watch goes into effect for all of the cape, the islands, and the south coast. this stays with us until sunday morning. and this is where we are expecting the most snow for a blizzard warning is in effect for new york. and that stretches into philadelphia, new jersey, into baltimore and d.c. as well. baltimore and d.c., they could seal up to two feet of snow. now, the rest of the pink you are seeing across the storm warnings. many of them have gone into effect already. many of these places already seeing a lot of snow. of course, we will keep an eye on this storm for you.

back to you. >> christa: all this snow is causing headaches for people looking to hit the skies this weekend. airlines canceling hundreds of flights. >> nancy: more are expected. jonathan hall is at logan airport with the very latest. >> reporter: hey, christa and nancy. more than 3,000 flights are canceled coast to coast today. and 107 of those flights are canceled in and out of logan. it's wintertime in new england. and even though there is not much snow in the forecast here in boston, travelers are arriving at logan wary of those flight status screens. . >> you thought it was going to be the end of the world last night. and we woke up. i was surprised, no delays. straight through. we popped through atlanta. that is always a delay on the best day. that was a great travel day.

offer. as always, if you are headed out, especially to those mid-atlantic states, check ahead before leaving for the airport. we are live at logan, jonathan hall, 7 news. >> christa: the snow will be measured in feet, not inches. that heavy snowfall is expected to blanket up to 15 states. in washington, d.c., residents are being advised to stay inside for the next 36 hours. the massive winter storm is barreling down on the east coast. heavy snow expected in some areas to top two feet. the national weather service says this could be one of the worst storms to ever hit the region. washington, d.c. is directly in the cross-hairs. residents are told to stay inside and ride it out. >> two feet of snow. that is a big deal. you know, the big stresses we are looking at, we are making

today, residents are ready. >> we see this as a major storm. it has life and death implications. all the residents of the district of columbia should treat it that way. >> nancy: the concern is thick ice in north carolina and virginia. traveling is treacherous for those venturing out to go to work. >> i definitely trust my legs more than i trust wheels at this point. i live a mile away. i'll just walk. >> nancy: in north carolina, the charlotte airport is a virtual ghost town now. with no flights in or out. at least five people have died in storm-related crashes. in tennessee, kentucky, and north carolina. >> christa: now the pats in the play-offs. they leave the home stadium in a half hour from now. the team getting in one final practice at gillette before boarding a flight headed for denver. for sunday's showdown with the

mid-atlantic. everything you see here in pink. then in red, these are blizzard warnings from new york into philadelphia. new jersey and into d.c. and baltimore. tomorrow morning, a winter storm watch for the cape and the islands. what to expect here at home and how much snow. back to you. chris thanks, danielle. tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon, we will watch the snow throughout the day. as early as midmorning, down along the south coast. you can see where the darker blues are. the heaviest precipitation lushing just offshore. that is very tight gradient on this. we are also going to have a coastal front set up. that will act as a mechanism to drive some snow even close to boston and just to the north and west as we go through the afternoon tomorrow, even into the evening hours. then watch this line get pushed farther off to the south and east. during the overnight hours. by sunday morning, at 7:00 in the morning, much of the area beginning to wind on down. over and done with the snow.

just to the south and east of us. we will have to watch what evolves out of. this we are sticking with these numbers for now. one to three in the city of boston. heading down south, some higher totals. down through portions of the south shore. especially away from the immediate coastline. back down route 44. closer to new bedford. about three to six inches of snow there. lighter totals the farther north and west you go. the coastal front means a difference in temperatures tomorrow. this will mean temperatures north and west of the front running 20-25 degrees with the northerly wind. then the wind coming off the ocean to the east of it. with temperatures running 30-35 degrees. again, this can act as a mechanism to drive that snow that will break out close to the city of boston. along the coastline tomorrow night. into sunday morning. the strongest gust, perhaps exceeding 50 will be down across the cape and the islands. moderate to major coastal flooding expected from the jersey shore. at least the central part and down south through the mid-atlantic. for us, minor coastal flooding
