12:01 pm
rains will switch over to snow about 5:00 to 7:00 down on the south shore, on the cape and the islands. the winter storm watch has been extended north into the city of boston. also through the southwestern suburbs in norfolk county as well as southern worcester county. for the rain transitioning over to the heavy wet snow late overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow. in the morning hours. i do expect that timing of the rain to switch to snow. boston out through worcester, somewhere in the three to five a.m. window here. once it does happen, it is snow is going to come down hard. a little bit later down through southeastern massachusetts. you get across plymouth county, perhaps down into brockton and bristol county, between 5:00 and 7:00 in the morning. we snowed to beat the band at times across southeastern massachusetts. between 5:00 a.m. and noontime. snowfall rates approaching one inch per hour in some of the bands that we get. this will basically lock in. a messy morning commute. in fact, if kids probably a lot of them won't be having school tomorrow. though i expect a lot of cancellations coming in once the snow settles on in.
12:02 pm
54 degrees. we are talking about heavy snow in the forecast. what needs to happen? we need this cold air back through the midwest to start moving toward the east coast. which it will do overnight tonight. now that the front is offshore. this front is not going anywhere. as this wave of low pressure rides along that front, with plenty of moisture along it, initially, it starts off as rain. but as the cold air works in, we flip over to snow early tomorrow morning. that is when we do expect this snow to become heavy at times. you can see that transition here on the forecast model, and look at all of this blue showing up by midmorning. commute. 8:00 in the morning. many of us seeing that steady snow. and the trend over the last 12-24 hours has been a little bit farther off to the west. when you see the snowfall totals, brought it up accordingly with more moisture back in place. expecting the metro area, many towns to pick up three to six inches of snow. that extends out to southern
12:03 pm
then you get close to foxboro. 95-495 exchange. down 24 as well into taunton. six to eight inches of snow. a good bet locally. nine inches, a possibility. this is heavy wet snow. tough to move. temperatures close to freezing if not just above it. for the timing of the danielle. danielle? chris:. hard to believe we are talking about all this snow. with temperatures in the 50's right now. overnight tonight, this cold air really starts to work in. now, as k a.m., notice temperatures are still in the upper 0's. and the low 40's. these temperatures really are more supporting rain. then by 7:00 a.m., these temperatures drop to around freezing. this is when the temperatures will really support the snowfall. and this is way it will stay throughout the morning into lunchtime in the afternoon. surely, this will really impact your commute tomorrow morning. 5:00 a.m. looks like fair travel. but really from 7:00 a.m. all the way until 11:00 a.m., it is going to be a mess out there. still really a mess for southeast massachusetts as we head into 1:00 p.m., too. then things get better as we

12:06 pm
this last night at a televised forum. and the candidates there were batting over... battling over who is the most progressive. bernie sanders came out swinging in derry. attacking his democratic rival hillary clinton. >> i do not know any progressive who has a super pac and takes $15 million from wall street. so all i say, you can't go and say you are a moderate one day and be a progressive on the other day. >> reporter: when it was her turn, clinton fired back. >> i was somewhat amused today that senator sanders has set himself up to be gate-keeper on who is a progressive. i'm a progressive who likes to get things done. >> reporter: the two battle for the hearts and minds of the democratic party's most liberal voters. we are taking on the most powerful political organization in the country. and that's, you know, the clinton organization. >> the goal has to be to prevent the republicans from house.
12:07 pm
that has been made under president obama. >> reporter: when clinton and sanders meet tonight on the university of new hampshire campus, voters can expect the candidates to highlight and sharpen their differences. clinton says once difference she will focus on is health care. >> before it was called obamacare, it was called as you remember. >> what this campaign is about is not just electing a president. it is creating a political revolution. >> reporter: and bernie sanders has just one campaign event scheduled to be in rochester today. other than that, it is debate prep all day long. for both candidates who will meet right here tonight at 9:00. that is story live from durham, new hampshire, i'm byron barnett, 7 news. >> kris: on to the republican side. the war of words between ted cruz and donald trump continues heating up. meantime, ted cruz is showing no signs of slowing down. he continues that busy agenda

ion than hall live in hooksett first. jon? >> reporter: hey, kris. ted cruz will be coming to the church in an hour and a half to talk about the opioid epidemic and to participate in a forum on addiction. he has three events scheduled for today. a busy guy, certainly. right now he is down in portsmouth at a toyota dealership. the 45-year-old has been running behind schedule. he spends hours at each event, takes his time. it is often worth it for the voters to wait. cruz has appeal for conservatives who like small government. the winner of the iowa caucuses shrugs off donald trump's claims that he stole the election by using dirty tricks to get votes, that he doesn't have too much use for the political pundits on tv. >> you know, we had an incredible evening in iowa on monday. (cheers and applause) what a fantastic night. you know, all the media
12:09 pm
sunday night, every pundit on every station said cruz could not win. you heard that over and over and over again. can't be done. can't be done. the polls aren't there. it can't be done. i remember watching hannity the night before they had six experts on. they asked him, who is going to win? the answer was trump, trump, trump. trump, trump, trump. >> reporter: but of course, it was cruz who won. he admits his team made some mistakes when they urged ben carson supporters of the iowa caucuses to switch to cruz. they propped up some rumors that were out there. carson planned to stop his campaign. in fact, that was not the case. that was a mistake. they should have gone after the people to let them know hey, he is not suspending his campaign. that follow-up was not done by the cruz campaign. disciplining any of his people. he doesn't want to make scapegoats out of them.
12:10 pm
i'm jonathan hall, 7 news. >> christa: all right. let's go to dan hausle live the trump campaign. trump is back in the granite state today. dan? >> reporter: yeah. trump is about to appear in the exeter town hall here. the first of a number of events today here in the granite state today. it will be interesting to see if he keeps up the attacks on ted cruz and his complaints caucuses. trump has been talking about cruz, saying that as jonathan told you, he essentially stole the election. by his campaign putting out word that ben carson was headed back to florida. and cruz may say that is a mistake. but trump calls it dirty tricks. he is calling for a redo of iowa. in his speeches, on twitter, and in interviews all day wednesday. >> i think it was a disgray that he did it. i don't think it should be allowed. those votes should be taken away. there were plenty of them. he really lies. i mean, i don't like to use

12:12 pm
he would cancel the nuclear deal with iran and unite the republican party. rubio tell it is crowd this election is a referendum on president obama and he says he is the best republican to go up against bernie sanders and hillary clinton. >> even the little ones get heavy... that wednesday in november, it would be the eighth, i guess. whatever. we can't wake up that day to the news of president bernie sanders or the news of president hillary clinton. that would be a disaster for america. >> reporter: so rubio's campaign has been touting a long list of congressmen and senators who have endorsed his campaign. and also rick santorum who just dropped out of the presidential race. although santorum struggled to come up with an accomplishment of rubio's for his four years in the senate. so far, when asked on ms-nbc this morning. live from manchester, new hampshire, 7 news. >> christa: a big change in
12:13 pm
one presidential candidate is moving ahead of another. so let's get right to andy hiller with the breakdown of the new numbers. andy? >> reporter: hello, christa. time in our new hampshire headquarters with dr. joshua dick who is conducting our poll with umass-lowell. and what it shows is the political ground in new hampshire is moving. we are seeing more of iowa's impact and all the arguing between the candidates that is under way here. hillary clinton is moving up. and marco rubio is really coming up. donald trump stays in first among the republicans with 36%, but marco rubio takes over second place with 15%. ted cruz now in third has 14%. jeb bush 8%. and john kasich, 7%. for the rest of the republicans, chris chris gets 5%. ben carson, 4%. carly fiorina,%. the undecided number is 8%. our tracking poll is what you want to look at. trump is on top, but he is down two points.
12:14 pm
has dropped on the poll. marco rubio has jumped into second place with 15%. that is a gain of three points. overnight. ted cruz holds his support but has dropped into third place. jeb bush lost a point. no change for john kasich. dr. josh, i asked you this yesterday. i'm going to ask you again. it is marco-memtumment. >> rubio is u. but i actually think donald trump stat... i think everyone is looking at expectations, and trump lost the expectations game in iowa. but in new hampshire, he is holding steady. >> reporter: hold on. since you began the poll, trump has lost two points. rubio has gained seven points. that means rubio is the one that's really doing well here. >> he is coming up, but rubio still trails trump by 21%. listen, everyone is waiting for trump to have his howard dean moment and it hasn't happened yet. >> reporter: he is trying. >> well, the thing is no
12:15 pm
to hold steady. he is talking red meat to his supporters. report o day. you see this still as good for trump. i still see it as better for rubioment. we will see tomorrow when the poll is going to have three days of the iowa impact here. >> yes. our completely first post-iowa debate poll tomorrow. >> reporter: day. let's take a look at the democrats. bernie sanders still has a lead over hillary clinton. 58% to 36%. a 22-point margin. but look at the direction of their tracks. sanders is down three points. and clinton is up four points. which is our single biggest gain since we started this poll. how much do you think hillary clinton should love new hampshire? >> well, you know, new for hillary clinton. and for the clintons. in 2008, this is where hillary made her comeback after losing in iowa to barack obama. so right now, she can really win by losing here.
12:16 pm
with that iowa win behind her, and everything ahead looking good, moving upward in the poll is good news for her. >> reporter: well, we agree about the democrats. you see the trends. we see the trends. and so does the candidates. they are good for rubio and clinton andly add in trump because of dr. josh. they are not good for anyone else. trump and sanders both need to win here. our tracking poll shows both are losing ground right now. live in new hampshire, i'm andy hiller, 7 news. you. we will bring you brand new exclues i overnight tracking polls out of new hampshire each and every morning leading up to the primary. that is at 6:45. really. we will have live coverage from new hampshire all week on air, on-line, at whdh.com. >> kris: so interesting. daily. coming up, florida declaring a state of emergency over the zika virus. now see what some airlines are doing to try and protect their
12:17 pm
>> chris: temperatures out there running into the 50's. hard to believe we will be tracking snow through the morning hours tomorrow. that snow will be heavy at times across much of eastern 54 in boston right now. 48 in worcester. and the wind is out of the west. the cold front is actually through. it is east of us. that will set the stage for the rain going over to snow. now, it is not in a rush to get in here. we have had some breaks of sun. what this will allow it to do, the mid to upper levels of the atmosphere, to cool off first. then once we get the precipitation back in the forecast tonight, you can cool down in the low levels, too. with the rain going over to some snow. not that cold out this afternoon. temperatures generally running into the low 50's, fading back a winter storm watch. this has been expanded north service. now includes the city of

12:18 pm
pretty much out through southern worcester county, too. rain going over to heavy wet snow early tomorrow morning. where is the cold air? 37 in buffalo. 36 in toronto. 9 in sudbury, ontario. overnight. moisture works back in, this is rain. you know, 10:00, midnight. 2:00 in the morning. mainly a rain event. between 3-5. you get enough cold air, start mixing in. you change it over to snow. from worcester into the city of boston. likely taking longer the further south and east you go. perhaps as close as 7:00. closer to the cape cod canal. 8:00 or 9:00, even 10:00 down across the cape. look at. this during the morning commute, this is a lot of deep blue here. dark blue showing up across eastern massachusetts. that is where we expect the highest snow totals and heaviest snow bands f right in time for the morning commute. this through about lunchtime. then in the afternoon, we taper it off from west to east. how much snow?
12:19 pm
farther off to the west, we totals. thinking much of the boston area, three to six inches. some heavy wet snow falling. tomorrow morning. again, right during the six to nine. locally, as high as nine down through southeastern massachusetts. essentially, starting off close to foxboro, attleboro, down into taunton. down through much of southeastern massachusetts. temperatures right around 33-34. that is heavy wet snow. in terms of an inch of liquid, that would basically equate to eight inches of heavy wet snow with the storm system. that is a little tough to shovel in this event here. over to danielle. >> danielle: thanks, chris. right now those temperatures in the 50's. as we head into the overnight that, cold air works in from the west. 2:00 a.m., notice temperatures have dropped. we are still in the upper 30's, low 40's. so these numbers probably supporting rain. and then that changeover by 7:00 a.m., temperatures are right around freezing. so these are probably numbers that are supporting snow. and then these numbers are stick with us through
12:20 pm
then into the afternoon. so much colder air is moving in. definitely going to be very messies for your commute tomorrow morning. especially between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. roads are going to be slick. going to be a mess out there. still messy for southeast massachusetts after lunchtime. things start to get better for your afternoon commute. this february, a very different start than last february. by this time in february, last year, we had 16 inches of snow. we are not talking about that much snow with this storm. by next week, we are talking about cold air moving in. for more on that, back to you. >> chris: we could get some more snow in here by monday night into tuesday. essentially, the mild pattern that we have is going away. next week, the cold air pouring back in throughout much of the eastern half of the united states. storm track. next week. monday night, monday late afternoon, monday night into tuesday, the next chance to watch some snow in here.

12:22 pm
>> christa: the i.r.s. is hoping to have all of its electronic filing services up and running again finally today. >> kris: yeah. some problems there. wednesday's outage caused many tax processing systems to be unavailable. some parts of the agency's web site still aren't working properly right now. so if you filed your return before the issue, the i.r.s. says you won't be affected by it. >> christa: much more to come in the next half hour. stay with us. we are talking about weather. it is being blamed for a fire that ripped through a home. see how the people inside managed to escape. >> chris: rain moving back in overnight tonight. that will change to wet heavy snow by tomorrow morning. details ahead. >> kris: more politics this noon. the push is on in new hampshire. candidates trying to leave their mark on voters ahead of the first in the nation

>> christa: the democrats getting one last shot on the national stage, ready to face off in a debate. we have team 7 coverage from new hampshire. there are those who say we cannot defeat a corrupt political system and fix a rigged economy. but i believe we need to lift our vision above the obstacles in place and look to the american horizon. to a nation where every child can not only dream of going to college, but attend one. where quality healthcare will be a birthright of every citizen. where a good job is not a wish,

where women receive equal pay and a living wage is paid to all. an america where after a lifetime of labor, there is time for rest and grandchildren. a nation that defends our people and our values, but no longer carries so much of that burden alone. i know we can create that america if we listen to our conscience and our hearts and not to the pundits and the naysayers. i'm bernie sanders. i approve this message, and i ask for your vote. 12:26 pm
37 in buffalo. 21 in green bay. this is the cold air that is going to be pushing in toward new england overnight tonight. as essentially, a front gets stalled out. just to the east of us. along that front, there is a couple of waves of low pressure riding along it. this will ensure we get precipitation late overnight tonight into the day tomorrow. now, what will happen is when the cold enough air reaches us, the rain that we get beginning to break out by 9:00, 10:00, midnight tonight will transition over to snow. between about 3:00 and 5:00 in the morning. from worcester into the city of boston. worcester first. then toward boston. then eventually, down through the south shore by about 7:00 in the morning. the cape and the islands, probably between about 8:00 and 10:00 in the morning. look what happens here. right smack-dab in the middle of the morning commute. steady snow if not at times, heavy snow. once that snow does transition from that rain, it will snow hard enough where the roads become slick. fairly quick here across much of eastern massachusetts. that will continue to be the case through noontime. then from noontime in worcester to 2:00 in the
12:27 pm
starts to end from west to east. perhaps a little bit longer down through the cape and the islands. how much snow to expect in well, the track with this storm has been a little bit farther off to the west. we have had to bring more moisture weather. i do expect that three to six inches of snow will be widespread across eastern massachusetts. now, you get into southeastern massachusetts, beginning as early as getting into fox pro here, attleboro, over to brockton, taunton, six to eight inches of snow likely. there may be one or two towns that gets away with nine inches of snow. this is going to be a heavy, wet snow. again, this will fall on top of the puddles out there. and the rain that we get overnight. so it is going to be tough to move. certainly, going to create a mess for the morning commute. for more on the temperatures with this storm now, over to danielle. >> danielle: as we head into tonight and tomorrow morning, the temperatures will really drop. as the cool air works. in 2:00 a.m. overnight tonight, temperatures still in the upper 0's, low 40's. with these numbers, we are probably dealing with rain. and then the changeover to snow, as we head into 7:00 a.m.
12:28 pm
dropping to close to freezing. then this is where they stay for much of the morning into lunchtime. to support that snow. now, it is going to be a mess on the roads tomorrow morning. 5:00 a.m., maybe not too bad. by the time 7:00 a.m. rolls around, all the way up until 11:00 a.m., it is going to be wet out there. it is going to be slick. the snow is going to be coming down. even into lunchtime for southeast massachusetts, not looking good out there. we will be here. we will have you covered. chris, christa, back to you guys. >> kris: don't worry. we will be with you all along for tomorrow morning's storm. we get started with an early start tomorrow. 4:30 a.m. with 7 news weather team danielle gersh with traffic and a team of reporters all across the area checking in on the conditions. that is tomorrow morning. 4:30 a.m. 7 news today in new england. >> christa: let's turn now to new hampshire. five days and counting from the first in the nation primary. things are really heating up there. on the democratic side, the two candidates are ready to go head to head. this is the first one on one debate for hillary clinton and bernie sanders. the candidates are using these
