week. nature's powerful punch on track to bring rain and heavy snow to new england. a live look in chelsea tonight. no rain yet but salt piles and trucks getting ready for whatever this storm brings. it did take a sudden shift and now it has boston in its sights. >> we have coverage of this looming winter storm beginning with jeremy with how much snow and when it could fall.

winter storm warning in effect for tonight and much of the day tomorrow. the storm starts as rain. the city at 46. orange 35. there is cooler air across northern new england seeping into southern new england late tonight and early tomorrow morning. the storm itself is pretty efficient and will make his own cold air. it will change the rain over to snow. the thinking of that changeover is between 4 and 7:00 a.m. first -- >> travel before then is marginal at best but really goes downhill at 7:00 on. it won't take much to turn those streets quite messy. further south along the south

the changeover takes a little bit longer. even down there, it's going to be a rough go. 195, 495 up the cape. first in the hills. winding down in metro boston around 4:00, 5:00 o'clock. how much snow is on the way? the deep shading of blue, plan on half a foot of snow give or take an inch and moving north of town about 5 or 6 inches of snow. 2 to 5 inches of snow. then coming back towards cape anne, closer to 5 or 6 inches of snow. downtown boston, 6 or 7 inches of snow. i thought perhaps maybe the rain would hold on a bit longer but i think that might switch over to snow faster.

probably more five inches than two. >> we're really focused on -- >> this is 5:00 o'clock in the morning. watch what happens by 9:00 o'clock in the morning. suddenly you're overspreading almost the entire area with poor travel conditions. once you get that transition from rain to wet snow, it could snow an inch an hour in a lot of these towns including the city of boston by 9:00 o'clock in the morning. this will quickly coat the road

>> there's going to be a lot of crews overnight preparing all of the roadways and it's mainly because there's going to be a lot of that heavy snow. now, we did find out that there's no school for boston students because they're going to be clearing all of those roads and are going to need a lot of this. 500,000 tons of salt in chelsea. this shipment is growing as they're unloading a new shipment that just arrived and crews are working overtime. salt piled high. it's been a mild winter so far but the latest storm could choke the morning commute. >> we can't stress enough the a.m. commute is going to be problematic. >>reporter: massdot is ready to clear the roads and suggests that transportation will be the most effective. 40,000 pounds of salt and 500

guy. >> following breaking news right now out of new york. two new york police officers shot in the bronx. both are expected to survive. we're told this happened at a public housing complex. you can see the scene there where police found the shooter dead in an apartment nearby. they believe he shot himself. and police took another person into custody. also from the night team, a man is shot in the street tonight in rocksbury and police are surging for a suspect in this case. police are searching for clues in this shooting of a 20-year-old man. the victim was with a small group when this man opened fire on them and ran up next tonight, fighting back. >> a robber gets much more than he bargains for when he tries to hold up a local convenience storm and storm force is on.

>> storm is on us right now. this is rain and will be the case for the next several hours. temperatures are in the 40s right now. the storm will ride up along this way late tonight and tomorrow morning. it's gaining strength and when they gain strength they can actually make their own cold air. they don't need to rely on arctic air. the storm will make its own cold air, change the rain over the snow. the timing stinks. it's going to be right in the middle of the morning commute flipping over to know about 4:00 a.m. or 5:00 a.m.

that's because the clerk behind the counter put up a big fight. the robber didn't wait until the store was empty and instead tried to steal the entire cash register in front of customers and the cashier inside. >> about five people were inside. >>reporter: he had on a hoodie hoodie and a hat. >> common courtesy, you go, no you go. ultimately, i went first. >> when he got to the counter, he tried to grab the entire register and that's when the clerk went for a golf club he had hidden behind the counter. after a few wild swings, the clerk lost the club. but then you can see the clerk flipping a switch triggering a
