starting with victoria warren. live at back bay station with the very latest. >> reporter: all of the folks on the framingham and worcester train, they came here. you take a live look here. the trains are now just sitting here. the passengers were told to get off and get on to an orange line train. but given the crowds and the delays, that was easier said than done. massive crowds, cramming platforms. >> reporter: pouring offer commuter trains in the hopes of getting a coveted spot on already crowded orange line trains. >> oh, thousands. at least a thousand off of our train. >> reporter: david perry snapped these pictures. domino effect from a signal problem an an amtrak line that pretty much kept almost all commuter trains from getting all the way to south station. >>. i was trying to get to south station. i'm just going to walk. the orange line is a complete mess.

waited. i waited for the train for about 40 minutes. then it came. and i would say at least 40-45 minutes. >> reporter: painfulfully slow commute again. >> this one is not even on the state. this one is on the feds. this is amtrak. infrastructure in this country. nothing has been maintained: it is all falling apart. >> reporter: some passengers were trying to find something positive about their experience. they said they felt communication through the "t" alerts was helpful as they were just stuck on these platforms, waiting for trains. this afternoon, amtrak continues to try to fix the problem. it is not fixed yet. which means it could be a messy evening commute. >> reporter: south station looking like a ghost town

no trains going in or out. our coverage continuing now with dan hausle. >> reporter: well, the worst of the morning commute is over. the concern is quickly turning to what the evening commute is going to look like with keolis who operates the commuter rail saying they ever no idea when this problem will be fixed. the big board inside south station there shows that most of the amtrak trains do seem to be coming and going on time. you look a the commuter rail lines. they all say info to follow. amtrak says the problem is with their main electronic switching. of all trains coming in and out of south station. they say they have an electronic problem. they are using manual switching and that leads to problems. keolis says they don't know when this problem is going to be fixed. >> it was really a tough morning for people to commute. they have let us know loud and clear they are frustrated. we share their frustration.

obviously, things continued on here into chelsea with the officer in pursuit. that officer has serious injuries. and is at mgh. he is expected to be okay. we spoke with one of the men who helped pull him out of the cruiser. >> we just heard, like, a loud roar. like a car racing. >> reporter: a revere officer crashed while chasing a suspect down marginal street in chelsea. >> when we saw the honda civic take the turn and basically, almost gave away. spun out. caught himself. >> reporter: the revere officer lost control of his cruiser. >> hit the first pole. then right when it hit it, it still had momentum. it hit the second pole. >> reporter: francesca ortiz was working nearby at a business. he and his partner raced to the cruiser. the two telephone poles the officer hit hanging over the street. >> right when we got close enough, the cop opened the door. fell out. someone help me. someone help me.

>> chris: good afternoon. temperatures running cooler than this time yesterday afternoon. yesterday, we had a lot of sunshine. we have a bit of a breeze out there. 33 in boston. 27 in worcester right now. the wind, 10-15 miles an hour. that is dropping the windchill factor down to 17 in worcester. and 24 in the city of boston. there is not going to be a lot of movement temperature-wise for the rest of the day. tons of sunshine. wall to wall here. in the city of boston. out through worcester. some scattered clouds offshore. the best chance of a few clouds backing in later this afternoon. would be along the coastline. maybe even passing snow shower late day if not into this evening down across the cape and the islands. again, the temperatures not moving that much more. you may squeak out another degree or two. overall i do expect temperatures to hold into the mid-0's. cool and breezy today. but 40's to near 50 23s over the weekend. mainly dry, though. could have a couple of rain and snow showers around friday night. we will talk more on that and the potential midweek storm coming up. >> nancy: a state senator at the center o'. >> a federal investigation. the f.b.i. raiding brian

and we are in canton with more on the allegations against him. >> reporter: wednesday night, the f.b.i. and i.r.s. continued to take boxes out of state senator brian joyce's canton law offers. officials raided the place that morning as part of a federal investigation into the lawmaker. >> not just the tip of the iceberg. it is an iceberg. >> reporter: state watchdog groups have had their eyes on the senator for quite some time. >> there was some allegations of pressuring people to give business to his law firm. taking goods and services, particularly dry-cleaning. >> reporter: on the state level, the office of campaign and political finance launched an investigation into the senator and found he used campaign funds to pay for graduation party at his home and to lease a car for two years. they say he remedied those issues by making a donation to a charity or reimbursing the money. now as feds step in, the governor says it's worth a

>> all of us in public life take the fact that we have to play by the rules seriously. i was troubled by some of the issues that were raised previously. with respect to the senator's relationship to some of the folks in his district. report tt state republican chair is demanding that joyce step down. in canton, 7 news. >> sarah: crews investigating a deadly fire in plymouth. a 64-year-old man died when flames through a three-story home last night. firefighters were unable to rescue the man. this is the state's eighth fire fatality in less than a month. a house in brookline goes up in flames. the two-alarm fire started on the second floor of this home on orchard road. there are no reported injuries. the mother who lived inside a house of squalor in blackstone will face murder charges. a judge is refusing to dismiss two murder charges against erika murray. she is charged in the deaths of two newborns whose bodies

september of 2014. murray's lawyers claim that autopsies did not prove the babies were alive when they were born. police say the body of a third baby was also inside that house. >> sarah: now to a shift in the race for the white house. for the first time in months, donald trump isn't leading the pack in a national poll. ted cruz is at the top of a new poll by nbc news. cruz has 28% of the vote. trump is in second with 26%. marco rubio and john kasich tied with 17. and ben carson with 10%. on the democratic side, a national quinnipiac poll out today is good news for bernie sanders. it finds sanders would win the election in november in a match-up with any of the g.o.p. candidates. the closest republican contender is ohio governor john kasich. he trails sanders 45% to 41%. >> nancy: a former supreme court justice is disagreeing with republicans on replacing justice antonin scalia.

president obama to fill the vacant seat and quickly. o'connor was appointed by ronald reagan broke with republicans who say they president's nominee. name the next justice. president obama is making a historic trip to cuba next month. the white house is expected to announce the president's trip officially later on today. it is all part of a larger tour of latin america. back in 2014, cuban president raul castro and president obama announced they would normalize relations after 50 years of broken ties. the last sitting u.s. president to visit cuba was calvin coolidge back in 1928. coming up, a big winner. we are learning more about who claimed that billion-dollar powerball jackpot in florida. >> nancy: one local family left with a bad connection with their cell phone carrier.

the bottom line, though, it is a cold day versus what we saw yesterday. by ten degrees on average. these numbers instead of being in the mid-40's, running into the mid-30's. it does feel cooler outside. just like yesterday, we have a ton of sunshine in place. some more clouds to the north and east here. coming offer the gulf of maine. and then sliding back down the coastline of maine. we may, indeed, get a few clouds to mix in with the sunshine here this afternoon. along the coastline, the best opportunity of a passing flurry or snow shower as well. maybe close to the coast. especially down through the cape. outer cape tonight, into very early tomorrow morning, some cloud around. again that, passing snow shower not out of the question for you folks. mainly clear overnight tonight. into tomorrow morning. for much of the commonwealth. and it almost looks like i'm showing you a blank map by tomorrow morning. that is because the forecast models no longer picking up on snow or clouds. at least for the morning and then in the afternoon, clouds will advance on in. thicken up. we will get some scattered snow showers in here overnight

tomorrow into saturday, they will start to pick up. the winds out of the south gusting anywhere from 30-40 miles per hour. they are dying down a bit as we head into lunchtime. they are certainly staying breezy throughout the day. on your saturday. now, the good news, we are not going to be dealing with those frigid cold temperatures we had last weekend. windchills won't really be an issue out there. so far, in february, our average temperature is right around average. just above 30 degrees. we have seen our warmest temperature this february at 65 degrees. and our coldest temp dhur february at nine below. i'm sure you remember, we saw that last weekend. in comparison to last year, our snowfall so in the season is much less. we had 96.3 inches by this time last season. we have only seen 25.3 in boston. so yes, that means 71 inches fewer this year. i don't think too many of us are complaining about that. no major storms as we head into the weekend. maybe next week. huh, chris? >> chris: yeah. looks like tuesday night into

it is not a lock that this will be all snow. as the storm tracks up the coastline, we will have to watch that track closely. the cold air is limited. this may be, indeed, more of a rain event. closer to the coastline. we will keep an eye on it. plenty of time to watch it. certainly, last year at this time, many towns had 30-40 inches on the ground. we had very little melting. and that's really the change from this winter versus last. we get a little bit of snow. this winter, you get the warm-up. it melts away. you get a couple of days of winter-like weather. no wasn'ter-like weather with 50-degree readings on sunday. >> nancy: thank you. rob gron kowske and his family and friends will host the inaugural gronk gala at the mercedes-benz dealership in burlington april 14. all proceeds will benefit the gronk nation youth foundation which supports local sports programs. and gronk is a busy one.
