switch to better. swito fios >> news at 6:00 starts now. >> breaking news. we have a projected winner in the nevada caucuses. according to nbc news, hillary clinton taking home a big win. this all coming hours before the caucuses wrap up. >> we are expecting to see record numbers at the mols. in south carolina, republican voters are at the polls right now. >> voters here started heading to the polls at 7:00 a.m. eastern time. turnout throughout the day has been described as strong and steady. much like we saw in iowa. and new hampshire. before we get to the republican contest, let's talk

first test out west. long lines, delays in start time, all part of the nevada caucuses today. as we learned in iowa, the caucus process more complicated than a primary. the big turnout making things a little slower. hillary clinton, the winner in that contest. polls had her and bernie sanders neck and neck heading into today. but hillary clinton able to part of her post-iowa and new hampshire fire wall. from first in the west now to first in the south. back here in south carolina, donald trump led polls coming campaigning. movement. a cnn orc poll released monday found half of republican voters solidly committed to one candidate. that could be good news for marco rubio, who is looking to bounce back from a disappointing fifth-place finish in new hampshire. on wednesday, he secured the endorsement of popular south carolina governor nicki haley. for ted cruz, tonight's results will say a lot about his campaign strategy going forward. his plan, especially for super tuesday on march 1, is targeting states that look a

heavy on those evangelical republican voters. a wide gap between him and donald trump would put that strategy in question. the republicans here tonight are vying for 50 delegates. south carolina polls, they close in less than one hour. south carolina has a tradition since 1980 of picking the eventual republican nominee. the only time since then they have missed in 2012 when they chose newt gingrich over mitt romney. now back to you. >> all right, karen. thank you. stay with 7 news as the poles close tonight. we will have the latest from both side at 10:00 on wc 56 and right here on 7-nbc at 11:00. >> we are following a developing story. a raging fire breaks out at an abandoned mill overnight. this is in fall river. right now, crews are still there putting out hot spots. this took firefighters several control. >> now crews are investigating what sparked the inferno. we are live from fall river with what we are learning tonight.

still on scene here putting water on the mill. >> you take a look behind me, you can see the building is still smoking. it will be for the next couple of days because this fire was so big. an old mill along weaver street in fall river torched overnight in a massive fire. the enormous orange flames lit up the early morning sky, giving off intense heat. >> the radiating heat, getting enough water to protect these buildings. obviously, the heat coming off here, not as hot on the building. it is hot on the men trying to apply the water. >> someone called the fire in around 3:00 on saturday. crews on scene work to stop the fire from spreading to other buildings in the area. it took firefighters about three and a half hours to contain the flames. over the summer, the same mill caught fire when it was hit by lightning. right now, firefighters say fbs it's too early to know how

>> it could be another couple of days before investigators can get in here. to get a better picture of what happened at this mill. live from fall river, 7 news. >> and there is more news today. an intense fire-fight takes a tragic turn. this is in natick. a 73-year-old woman killed after being rescued from the flames. the state fire marshal is fire. kelli o'hara is live with what we know right now. kelli? >> we are told an off-duty fire lieutenant on his way to work here this morning, spotted the smoke and flames and called 9 11. crews were here immediately. but by then, it was too late. >> it's horrible. >> it was a lot of smoke. we didn't see flames. there was a lot of smoke. >> fire tearing through the second floor of this natick home early saturday morning. the smoke and flames so intense, it claimed the life of the woman living inside. the state fire marshal says a 73-year-old passed away hours after firefighters rescued her.

tress on the front lawn. her east central street home. firefighters believe flames sparked in the victim's bedroom. the only person home at the time. >> whether it is elderly, young, you know, that is somebody's relative. you know that, could be somebody's mom, sister, and daughter. it could be anybody. you know what i mean in it is horrible. >> we are told there were no working fire alarms at the time. of this blaze. the state fire marshal's office says this is the 12th death in the state so this year. due to no working fire alarms. in natick tonight, kelli o'hara, 7 news. >> 7 news now turning to the weather. and wow. what a day it was. temperatures creeping up to nearly 60 all over massachusetts. and to top it off, the sun, it was out all day. hopefully, you got a chance to get outside. it is spring. is it here to stay or is mother nature teasing us? >> you know, it is still new

it is really hard to say. stick a fork in it. you know, anything could happen. april fool's day. '97. we don't know for sure. at least for now, we get to enjoy another mild day tomorrow. 60 degrees was the high in boston for today. record. current temperatures still 50 in boston. 54 in bedford. that will be changing through the overnight hours. as it is getting dark and also a weak cool front wants to push through the area as well. you see these showers trying to make their way. in they have a lot of cry air to overcome, it look like. however, we see some cloud cover that pushes in through the overnight hours. we will call it partly cloudy. still fairly mild. tomorrow, another mild day ahead of us. right around 50 for highs for most. does it stick around to next week? plus, everybody wants to know what's up with that system by the middle of next week. we will get to those details in a bit. >> emergency crews on the scene of a serious accident in lawrence.

union street, landing upside-down in the middle of the road. the street was shut down as crews removed the car. no word on any injuries. >> a multi-fam lip home in brighton up in flames. the fire broke out last night. spreading to the attic of the large house on the street. fire crews battled the flames for more than an hour. 7 people lived in the building. the good news, though no, one was hurt. one of those families, though, thought their dog did not make it out of the fire. the family posting pictures of layla after the blaze. good news here: she was found safe this afternoon in newton. >> lowell police arrest a suspected robber. detectives say gerald wallet yesterday. police showed up and found the two men fighting. the 20-year-old suspect allegedly assaulted the officers and then ran away. police found that suspect today with help from the . police in durham, new hampshire arresting two students accused of stabbing a classmate. matthew gibbons was arrested

held on bail. another man also arrested in connection to the crime, the victim was treated for his wounds and is in stable condition. >> also in new hampshire, police arrest a man in connection with arson. investigators say house was set on fire yesterday. police arrested the man in connection to the crime. the investigation is still ongoing. also on 7: a former fairhaven high school football star f in some hot water. accused of leaving the scene of an accident that seriously injured two people. police say he tried to cover up his dangerous drive with the help of his mom. >> tonight, one person still in the hospital in critical condition. as that driver faces serious charges. 2012. a star football player for fairhaven high school today, on a much different playing field. new bedford district court. accused of a hit-and-run that left a woman in critical condition. >> she was dragged for 25 feet.

>> it happened two weeks ago. at 2:00 in the morning on this stretch of road. in fairhaven. 50-year-old terrence hope was walking home from a bar with a friend. 40-year-old christine machado. when police say they were struck by a car. the driver never stopped. >> why wouldn't you stop if you hit somebody if what would you be hiding? >> the car ended up in new bedford at glassman auto. prosecutors claim the defendant's mother, christine pyers began a cover-up, claiming the car was damaged by a tree. the owner didn't buy it and contacted police. . >> i was looking at the car. like i said, i just knew this wasn't a tree branch. there was no doubt in my mind. >> authorities obtained text messages from woman's phone, revealing a mother worried about much more than car damage. on the night of the incident, her phone googled the term fair haven, massachusetts, hit-and-run. revealing the story posted on a local news web site. >> what kind of parent raises their child to leave two bodies on the side of the

>> meantime, pyers was released today, after being charged with only a pair of misdemeanors. the d.a.'s office says that is all they can do for now. including charges against his mother are a possibility. as for christine machado, she remains in a coma. the mother is not facing any charges as of right now. police are asking anyone with information to come forward. >> supreme court justice antonin scalia laid to rest today. thousands attended his funeral today in washington, d.c. including vice president joe biden. and republican presidential candidate ted cruz. one of scalia's nine children spoke at the funeral remembering his father. >> he gave us one another. to have each other for support. that's the greatest wealth parents can bestow. and right now we are particularly grateful for it. >> officials determined

>> tonight we are riding along with undercover officers as they fight to get drugs off the streets. we were there as they made some big busts. >> it is part of a massive battle in what many call an opioid epidemic in new england. kelli o'hara has the story. >> it's a tuesday morning. but this is no ordinary work day. police are gearing up for a heroin raid. we are behind the wheel of this undercover detective. >> he is heading up a region-wide task force with undercover officers from eight other cities and towns. >> we are targeting an individual who has been selling heroin up and down route 16 from everett to lynn. >> we can't show his face or use his name. >> it's very bad. >> he should know. he has been an officer with everett p.d. for more than two decades. he says today they are trying to take down a well-established heroin

>> actually, there are four search warrants going on as we speak. chelsea, beverly, and one in lynn. east boston is going to execute a search warrant related to this case. >> police are targeting a stash house in chelsea. run by two men. one has just pulled in. >> we have been watching him for about a month and a half now. >> shut the car off. >> things happened quickly. we pull up just as cops have their man on the ground in handcuffs. >> there is one party in custody in chelsea. >> another team heading up to the apartment. investigators say the deals are done. detectives burst through the apartment door. and what they find inside makes it worthwhile. >> no one is here. >> what are we looking at in. >> heroin and cocaine. broken up into individual wrapped bags. >> 40 grams of heroin understood cover here. that is enough to get more than a hundred people high. there is also more than

streets in massachusetts. a lot of talk through the last few days of a big system moving in by the middle of next week. so rain, snow? what are we looking at? the forecast coming up next. >> coming up next in sports, the bruins wrapping up a road trip tonight in dallas. and how about this? harvard will be represented by more players at the n.f.l. combine than university of texas. that story is next in 7 sports. the world a president has to grapple with. sometimes you can't even imagine. that's the job.

>> what a day. a spring tease. these temperatures really went above and beyond what i expected them to yesterday. we got bright sunshine through the bulk of the day. boston actually made it up to a high of 60. just eight degrees shy of the record for the day. you think about last weekend. a cry from what we were dealing with last weekend. now, we have been gaining daylight. i have been mentioning this for the last couple of days. the sun angle is getting higher. so it's warmth from the sun you can actually notice and the temperatures were able to benefit from that today. current temperatures, 50 in boston. as well as worcester. 54 in bedford. 52 in norwood. it was a little cooler for cape cod. staying in the 40's today. you see these showers trying to push in for us. it is almost like there is a wall that is blocking them northwest of 495. we have some dry air in place. and so it really will take a lot for those showers to overcome that dry air. this cool front is in response to that system that brought us

although this is a weak cool front. paging through the in the overnight hours. it doesn't do a whole lot for our temperatures tomorrow. it still is another mild day to enjoy tomorrow. it does push in a few clouds overnight tonight. and also again tomorrow as well. partly cloudy. for tonight and tomorrow. but again, i mentioned those mild temperatures still with us. 34-40 for overnight lows. then tomorrow, most locations topping out right around 50 degrees. still ten degrees above normal this time of year. again, partly cloudy skies to enjoy. then late tomorrow night, and early monday, a system tries and it could bring a few rain showers, possibly rain-snow mix to the south coast. i give it about a 20% shot. it is really this system for the middle of next week that we have all been talking about. and recent forecast models are pushing that track farther to the west. the response would be that it's warm and wet for us. more wet than white. it doesn't even look like a snowflake on my 7 on 7 forecast. so hopefully, that pleases

wet and windy for thursday. >> the fenway south panda watch continues. pablo sandoval was expected to show up today but technically doesn't have to arrive until tuesday when the rest of the open camp. all of red sox nation eagerly awaiting that first glimpse to see if the panda shows up in shape. it is day two for pitchers and catchers. the $217 million left arm of david price has been the early story of spring training. the left arm of eduardo important. the second-year starter looking to build off his 10-6 record from a year ago and provide boston with some depth in the starting rotation. you can tell e-rod is sa smart kid. he is seeking advice from chance. >> he is one of the best pitchers in baseball. for me, he is one of the best.

was "just slow to everything". they will wake up tomorrow in denver. coming up tomorrow night on sports xtra, trey daerr will go one on one with sox skipper john farrell. we will talk about the start of spring training. ian thompson will stop by to chat about the celtics. that is all tomorrow night at 11:25 right here on 7-nbc. the n.f.l. combine is this week at lucas oil stadium. 35 players are invited to participate. among them, two players from harvard university. how about this? it marks the first time two players from the same ivy league school have been invited in the same year. >> by the time they hit 30, they should be done. >> training for the next step in their football careers, and lifetime. the n.f.l. combine. >> i have prepared as hard as i could. i have done all the drills. multiple times. should be a great moment for me. i have prepared hard for it. i'm ready.

offensive line linemen are ready for the opportunity to introduce themselves to the n.f.l. if the it is always strength. the bench-press is really and on the field drills as dry-blocking and all that stuff. i'm working really hard on that. >> they will show-case those skills this week at lucas oil stadium in their home state of indiana. the two became friends at the all-star game. >> who would have thought that we would have success on the gridiron here at harvard, both been amazing players and then n.f.l. hopefuls? that is crazy. >> you can say that again. it speaks to the hard work they have put in over the last four years which will be on display for gm's, coaches and scouts as they fight for their futures. opportunity for me. this is a goal that i have. you know, now it's here. i'm looking to take advantage of it.
