bell respect for the ritzer family as they continue their journey to heal." >> anchor: terrifying threat against the quincy detective. police say this man left a menac menacing message threatening the lives of the detectives family. dan hausle live in quincy now with what prosecutors revealed in court a little earlier today. dan? >> reporter: prosecutors say this guy has been in and out of jail. he has been convicted almost more then a dozen times for a variety of charge. they say threats against officers still are kind of common but when you make a threat against an officer's family, well that's something else. salvatore mendez back behind bars leaving one detectives and his family breathing easier. investigators say the detective had gotten an arrest warrant for break breaking and entering when mendez left a troubling message on the detective's voice mail . he told the detective that he was going to kill him and his family tonight.

this threat was did you to recent court cases that he has with mendez. >> reporter: police airplaned protective surveillance and then wept looking for mendez. investigators say the detective had no trouble figuring out who had left that threatening message . he received a message from someone who identified himself as salvatore mendez. the call came in from a phone number and reverse look up showed it is listed to salvatore mendez . >> reporter: he was found in marlborough hospital when marlborough police took him after they say mendez was break breaking windows and acting erratically. quincy police picked him up and charged him with threatening their detective. the judge set bail at $10,000 but also ordered machine dez held without bail on another case. mendez's lawyer questioned whether he is criminally response will here. she had him checked out by a doctor and said he doesn't remember making the threats but she says he has a history of drugging to the point of blacking out.

>> anchor: boston police are now looking for a suspect they say is armed with a knife. investigators are searching for the man seen in these surveillance photos. he is wanted for questioning in connection with several armed robberies in the area. investigators say he has been around with a 12 inch kitchen knife and is also missing some of his teeth happen. was last seen in downtown boston near washington and boylston streets. now a rhode island mansion up in flames. fire fighters working through the morning to put out the fire in newport, rhode island. the historic home was on newport newport's famous bellevue avenue avenue. at least 100 years old. the lodge was under construction of a family had just sold it. witnesses say the home caught fire so quickly yesterday afternoon by the time fire fighters got there, it was just too late. this was like over the top. the whole plates was engulfed. that. and this thing started collaps collapsing. i heard a couple of pops that

u-haul after a bizarre slow speed chase near kansas city. officers chased the driver who had a sword after getting reports of an assault. the driver who ended up on a crash course with the church where police found the man's stunning hall. police found knives, a swore, a blow gun and four children inside the crashed u-haul truck. the man behind the wheel had been violent that morning around 4:00 police say he pulled the sword on two people at this gas station . hen they got there they attempted to can't the suspect who fled in the vehicle . about ten police cars followed the truck up and down the highway for about 45 minutes minutes. they set out stop sticks twice. slashed the u-haul's tires are the driver came it a stop the a local church ramming into the front doors twice. all with small children ranging from three to 8 years old and a woman inside . very scary . >> reporter: pastor brandon park got to the scene to find the front doors of his church mashed in . first i thought it was an accident but when you begin to

parents and six licks of murdered danvers iteacher colleen ritzer just hours before the convicted teen killer would be sentenced . i lost my beautiful little girl. colleen was my daughter, my friend, someone i could go to for anything. colleen was irreplaceable and i miss my best friend every day. the world is a much darker place without colleen in it. >> reporter: ritter was raped and murdered by the then 14 14-year-old chisolm back in 2013 hen he brutally attacked his 24 24-year-old math teacher inside a girl's bathroom at danvers high before stuffing her body in a recycling barrel and toughing it in the woods behind the school. colleen's mother during an emotional statement recalled the chilling moment when police told . we were not told that colleen had been found but that they had found colleen's body in school. i only asked two questions. how and they told me with a box cutter and who? was it the student? and they said yes .
