little boy drowned in south boston. >> a robbery in worcester caught on camera. two men smashing this, way into a popular bar. >> radioactive material stolen in connecticut, local and federal officials teaming up and tracking it down. >> and a trip to the car wash turning to chaos. two suspects sprayed away when they tried to steal a car. >> first here at 5:30, we're following two breaking news stories. first, mayor speaking out after the death of a little boy in south boston. the 7-year-old was at a city-run children's camp yesterday afternoon when he drowned at carson beach. >> adam williams is live at the breaking news desk with the details. >> well, police say they are speaking to the camp counselors and the family to try to figure out what happened yesterday. 7-year-old kaiser willis of dorchester wandered off from a summer camp at the l street bathhouse. it's operated by the boston center for youth and families

disappeared. the mayor also said the director of the curly community center, which runs the summer camp something now on paid ad straiive leave while officials investigate. it was a four-hour frantic search we were covering yesterday before crews were able to locate the boy's body in the waters off carson beach. boston mayor marty walsh abruptly left the dnc in philadelphia to get back up here to boston after learning what had happened. walsh met with the child's devastated. in the this is with a tough day and yesterday was a tough day. very difficult to put into words. it's horrible. >> we're following breaking news out of mashpee, as well. where police and s.w.a.t. teams have been on the scene for hours now, stress that there is not an

that's what police are telling us but they are calling it an ongoing situation. they are telling people to avoid route 28 between deer crossing plaza and south gate all the way to the town borderline. apparently there's somebody holed up in a business, possibly armed. that's what police are worried about, and they say stay away from windows if you happen to be in that immediate we'll keep you posted on both of these breaking stories. at the news desk, i'm adam williams, 7news. shots fired at a man overnight sending three people to the hospital. that call came in just after midnight. one person shot in the chest and the other victims expected to be okay. a framingham man under arrest after police say he robbed a holiston convenience store at gunpoint. police say david bombard showed here, robbed the store, struggled with the owner and ran off. the 47-year-old is facing

officer. >> an everett police officer has been cleared of wrong-doing. he was arguing with an officer it that the 48-year-old charged at the officer with a knife. we froze the video right before ther shot and killed him. the d.a.'s office ruled the officer's actions were justified. >> reporter: an overnight bar break-in is caught on surveillance video. two men smashing the door, perfect game bar in worcester, cash register. the in even are seen initially trying to break through an exhaust vent and then tiptoeing through the basement. >> because tiptoeing really hides you from a surveillance camera. you have to be real quiet when that's happening. >> the importance of finding they'll again is to make sure they don't continue to do this in their naked. >> the robbery triggered an alarm and police were able to arrest one of the suspects but still searching for the man in the hat. we are following more news today, community in france mourning the loss of a priest,

attack. the latest of terror attacks in hat country prompting the president to address his nation once again. isis took responsibility. >> reporter: this morning this sanctuary is no longer a safe haven from terror in france. reverend jack hamil, 86 years old, was ordered to kneel and brutally murdered while leading mass yesterday in the suburbs of no dee. his throat slashed after two attackers interrupted the service briefly taking hostages this nun managed to escape and found help. when i saw them, i said to myself, that st danielle said of the attackers, you christians, you kill us. it was this type of conversation. one parishioner was seriously injured. police responded quickly killing both men as they left the church. isis claiming responsibility. pope francis condemned the deadly assault, part of what the vatican called absurd violence. french president fran?ois hollande rushed to the scene shaking hands with police, comforting the rattle. we will win, he said in a

over 2000 firefighters are battling the big sur fire which has berned more than 20,000 acres in northern california. los angeles county has declared a local state of emergency due to the sand fire there. it's killed one person, burned more than 37,000 acres and destroyed dozens of homes. eight men were stranded with little or food as a fire flare to safety. officials in connecticut recovering a stolen device containing radioactive material. an employee at a material testing company reported it missing after it disappeared from their car. the investigation and the search for the device involved, federal, state, and local officials. 7's nancy chen has the story. >> reporter: the moment of relief as a stolen piece of construction equipment containing radioactive materials is returned to its rightful

bridgeport police department, bridgeport emergency management, connecticut state police, my staff, everybody responded well to the incident. >> reporter: the state says this is a soiled density gauge, belonging to hacks material testing group. inside it, small amounts of two types of real active materials. it was reported stolen tuesday from employees' personal car parked at their home. an intense investigation involving multiple agencies including the fbi and the nuclear regulatory commission quickly f broken open and exposed the contents, if the contents were left someplace in the public over the long term, they could pose a hazard to people. >> reporter: police reached out to area pawnshops alerting them to the stolen property. >> east coast pawn did call, one of our burglary detectives this afternoon, and let him know that he thought that somebody was there turning in the piece of equipment, that was stolen earlier this morning. >> reporter: that afternoon police arrested carlos hernandez who investigators say is seen

used an atm card also taken from the car. the state arrived on the scene shortly after his car and declared the device intact, ending a day of hard work where public safety was always the main concern. >> all the protocols worked as we've always trained and briefed work on it. it's good see things work the way they are. >> federal officials are looking into whether the employee whose car's device was stolen from violated any protocols. nancy chen, 7news. new details in a murder case in two girls of trying to kill their classmate as a sacrifice will be tried as adults. the girls were 12 years old when the incident happened back in 2014. police say they lured their friend into the woods and stabbed her 19 times. the girls are charged with first-degree murder and could face up to 45 years in prison. 46 people were saved from freezing waters in alaska last night after having to abandon ship. coast guard officials say two good samaritan vessels rescued those people who abandoned a

water. pretty dramatic images there. the ships rushed to the scene after hearing the coast guard's emergency broadcast for help, the people were rescued from emergency he reps and luckily no one was hurt. a man caught trying to take a school bus for a joyride. he didn't get very hard, crashed it before he even got out of the facility. police say he climbed a fence at the facility, stole a bus that was about to be washed. he was arrested shortly after that crash. beer truck driver spilling beer all over the road. the truck was actually involved in two collisions. first the driver hit a tree, then he hit a light pole, which caused the beer to shift and then spill out. the driver wasn't hurt. no word yet on whether he'll face charges or why that crash happened. ahead here at 5:30, an attempted carjacking doesn't go quite as planned. >> the driver fighting back in middle of a car wash. new at 6:00, a race to the rescue in spencer when crash

two would-be carjackers filed themselves in a soaking situation where the owner of the car fights back. the two suspects walked up to the man as he was rinsing his vehicle at a car wash. but instead of getting away with the car, the s christa delcamp has the story. >> yeah, i lad right down the barrel of it, and i'm just like i'm not gonna do it. >> reporter: what should have been a quick rinse for michael davis' new car could have turned into a fight for his life. 3 minutes into his car wash he saw someone approaching him. >> and i turned and i'm like, hey, i'm not interested. i don't have any money or anything and when i turned back around, the guy came around the corner with a gun, pointed it at me. >> reporter: the entire ordeal

at least we didn't have the humidity to couple that with the heat today. dewpoints manageable. i say 60 degrees is a good threshold for how humid it is with the dewpoints. but the humidity will be on the increase a touch tomorrow. throughout the day, getting muggier and muggier and it's back. full-blown wet air mass as we get into friday because we're also in for some beneficial rain then. the quiet weather that we've been enjoying right now, tomorrow might be a different story due to this cool front. this will make allhe finally taking us back to normal. but as it comes in from the north, the question is how far south does it sag? and that will really make -- be the determining factor of who gets showers and if we get showers tomorrow. i only have about a 10% chance of any pop-up showers or storms into tomorrow afternoon and evening. i think this particular forecast model that you're seeing here is a little aggressive on widespread rainfall. it's very isolated in however, e

you. here's the bigger picture. hot temperatures with us tomorrow. here comes the cool front i was talking about, and it looks like it stalls just to the south of us. if it can tap in to this low that travels in from the southwest, then the two of those things together gives us so much extra lift to the atmosphere, that's already very moist, we can get some good heavy downpours with this system as we get into friday afternoon and friday evening, as well. could be some strong storms embedded in there. but we're talking beneficial rainfall. the potential is inches, even more than that not out of the question. and really the heaviest rainfall focused across southeast mass and buzzard's bay. precipitation definite citer, boy, it's significant. 6 inches, more than that for boston, 8 inches for worcester. so we can help to take that back because we look forward to the rain on friday. mostly clear tonight. still mild. and tomorrow 90 to 95. it's another hot one. it'll feel like that heat wave is just ticking on but relief is

center is on paid administrative leave. >> and the news comes after the mayor met the victim's family and won't say much but that they were absolutely devastated. he came back to city hall about an hour later and announced to the press that he has put the director of the curly community center on paid administrative leave as they continue to investigate exacwh now, the mayor won't say what the director's role was when 7-year-old kyzr willis went missing. the boy was attending a city-run program at the curly community center and last seen around 2:15. crews with boats and helicopters searched for him and sadly little kyzr willis' body was found in the water, 15 yards from shore behind the l street bathhouse about five hours later. >> the mayor's office says they are working to piece together a better timeline of what happened. they do know that the director,

supervisor, 25 counselors and 8 lifeguards were watching 56 kids at the time. >> it's my hope and expectation that no family ever has to go there you this horrific loss. it's a tough day. it was a tough day yesterday, you know, just a horrible day. our review has already begun, independent of what the police are doing with their investigation. and an assessment of all of our camps and free drop-in c >> the center will re-open to adults tomorrow, to children on monday. the mayor does say that there will be grief counselors on hand for anyone who witnessed any of this and needs some help at this trying time. reporting live from city hall, kimberly bookman, 7 nuts. and so this tragedy really weighing heavy here on the community as well as, you can't even imagine, that little boy's family. >> many people just lost trying to put it all together, figure
