>> seth: really? >> yes. as i was leaving he felt the need. >> seth: that's a funny thing that a driver who is going to get a number of stars from you. >> yes. >> seth: would let you know, "hey, i probably smoked weed before i picked you up." >> yeah. [ laughter ] he got five stars, i was gonna say. >> seth: he got five stars. yeah. that's all right. that's all right. so "star trek," this seems -- congratulations. great reviews. >> oh, thank you. >> seth: great opening weekend. it seems like a cast that gets along very well. >> yeah. >> seth: as evidence by the fact, it seems like you spend a lot of time making dubsmash videos. >> yes. dubsmash is a lip syncing app. >> an application for your phone. [ light laughter ] and zoe saldana started the virus, she was patient zero. and then we got all got infected and started doing it like crazy. i think we must have had -- we texted each other these dubsmashes and there were easily 100. >> seth: 100. and do you -- are you someone with your dubsmashes, do you choose to lip sync music songs? like are there different -- >> yeah, like, zach is -- >> seth: zach quinto.
2:09 am
lip syncing speech and he will, like, download acceptance speeches from the emmys and stuff like that. >> seth: uh-huh. >> and will -- >> seth: so he'll lip sync someone else's acceptance speech? >> someone else's crying acceptance speech. >> seth: will he ever do this in costume? >> all the time. yes. >> seth: okay. >> it was all in costume with the ears and the hair. >> seth: so a lot of spock accepting. >> yes. >> seth: wow. >> spock accepting grammys. [ laughter ] >> seth: yeah, now i understand. now it's starting to make sense. >> and i was good at the song selection. >> seth: okay. >> that was my forte >> but it is a shameful practice because if you came into the actor's tent, it would be a bunch of actors doing this. [ laughter ] that's what it looks like. it's terrible. >> seth: not -- no one going over their lines, just fully lip syncing. >> no. it's awful. >> seth: i wanted to talk to you about a wonderful thing that happened online, which was called -- so i guess explain the
2:10 am
>> okay. this is -- >> seth: starring john cho. >> starring john cho. >> seth: and i guess someone did this to draw attention to the lack of roles for asian americans in film. >> yes. >> seth: and you met the person who started this? >> yes, i dm'ed him. >> seth: yeah. >> and i said -- >> seth: because this is the sort of thing they would do. is a photoshop, very nicely photoshop. >> yeah. >> seth: you in the movie posters. this is "james bond." >> yes. >> seth: you as james bond. and so you reached out. >> so i reached out and i said i have to meet you because this man affected my life. and so we met and he's -- his name is william yu. he lives here in new york city. and he's a young guy who just thought that people should be talking about this issue and did it in this really clever way. >> seth: yeah. and there you are in "the martian." that's -- [ laughter ] i think you'd be fantastic in "the martian." >> yeah. >> seth: here you go, a little romance with emilia clarke in "me before you." these are excellent photoshops. [ light laughter ] >> yeah. >> seth: do you have a favorite? i think we have your favorite here. >> yeah. my favorite is the photoshop of me on jake gyllenhaal's body for "southpaw." >> seth: yeah, because that is --
2:11 am
who wouldn't want that? >> yeah. >> seth: who wouldn't want to like not do any of the work and just get gyllenhaal's the body? >> exactly. it's so much easier. >> seth: yeah. but is it nice? i mean, it is certainly an important message. >> it's great. yeah. and it got people to talk about an issue that i think is -- people are reluctant to talk about race and this was a fun way to do it. >> seth: yeah. >> and a visual way, rather than, you know, doing this. although, it did make me a was doing well, but i'm not in any of those movies. >> seth: that's true. [ laughter ] but let me tell you, every one of these actors, you think daniel craig's uber drivers ever given him weed? >> no. >> seth: no. you are doing just fine, my friend. [ laughter and applause ] thanks so much for being here, buddy. >> yeah, man. thank you. >> seth: always so great to see you. john cho. day wave's gonna perform fm teragram ballroom. but first, in 2014, english actor jack o'connell broke out in a big way, thanks to a starring role in "unbroken." now you can catch him sharing a little screen time with george clooney and julia roberts in the new film "money monster." have a look. ? >> i'm sure the question comes up all the time. "what's it like working with george clooney and julia roberts, and jodie foster?" do you hate that line of questioning? >> yeah. yeah, yeah. indefinite question. "what is it like?" am i supposed to aliken it to something? what, you want me to describe it or -- it gets a bit confusing, it's just very general. after the 50th something time of answering it, then, yeah, it can get a bit tedious. would you like to know? >> i was gonna say, what's it like to work with george clooney? [ laughter ] ? >> my name is jack o'connell. i'm a lad from derby in the u.k. this is, "money monster."
2:26 am
>> the name is lee gates, the show is "money monster." without risk, there is no reward. should i sell, should i unload? get some balls! man up! >> who's that guy on camera two? >> you wanna complain about it? go ahead. >> who is it? anybody know? >> what is this, a union thing? [ gunshot ] >> cut the feed. >> whoever's in there, turn the cameras on! >> turn the cameras on, patty! >> what do you want me to do? >> turn them on, patty! turn 'em on! >> put it up. ? >> pick it up, put it on. up? >> 'cause i have the detonator. my thumb comes off this trigger, and we all explode. ? >> lee gates, played by george clooney, is a financial advisor, shall we say, slash entertainer for a tv channel that's based on advising people on the stock market. which is boring. that sounds boring, i know. but then kyle turns up, my character, with a couple of bomb
2:27 am
off. kyle was enraged by lee, by walt camby, the situation he's in. the fact that his mom's money, which he just inherited, finally tried to be smart about it. and then he gets ripped off. a fellow like kyle, who's been told throughout his life that if he does things in the right order, and does them the right way, that he'll get his just desserts at the end of it. that's the american dream. but it was stolen from him, in a system that has allowed for we meet kyle, and he's in a desperate situation which is gonna effect not only him, but his girlfriend and his child, which is on its way. [ yelling ] [ glass breaking ] >> this isn't good, lee.
2:28 am
? >> by the end of my first read, i started to like lee gates. so we begin by disliking lee. he's very typical and very easy to dislike. almost a caricature. but then we see what he's about. and george clooney plays him beautifully and then we end up understanding him, too. yeah, interesting arcs. and i thing that's one thing that jodie was keen to focus on, was that every character, every human that we're trying to represent on screen, we get an understanding of. one shorthand of hers that i found very effective was when she -- just coming off of me, the emotion of what she was trying to get me to achieve. she'd just come, and very intimately just demonstrate the level of panic and emotion within that, just by doing it. not necessarily saying it. she'd come over she'd say, "jack i think it's more --" and then she'll go into it. and i don't think that's always gonna be a compatible way of
2:29 am
but it was with jodie. it took a while for me to be able to do that again. i just think that it was so enormous the jeopardy -- the imaginary jeopardy of me taking my thumb off this trigger, was so enormous that i don't think i ever did -- maybe, maybe i let it slip. but hopefully that's something i reinforce for me. >> first, let me start off by saying, on behalf of everyone here at ibis, we are prepared to do whatever we can to get you to put down that gun. ? >> i wanted the audience to feel like he was capable of doing something extreme. with the nature of filmmaking, sometimes it takes two, three days to film one scene. and if i'm angry all the way through that scene, then i've got to be angry for two or three days and still be professional and not upset anyone. part of my process is if i know that we're about to go for a take and i don't necessarily feel enraged, then i'll just go and scream some [ bleep ] somewhere.
2:30 am
it's apparently not weird to do that as an actor. it's very weird in the real world, that's deranged. you'd encourage somebody to seek mental help in the real world. if i started screaming now just 'cause i thought it would benefit my work. >> what if i told you right now that it would benefit this piece? >> give me a minute. [ laughter ] ? >> carson: that was jack o'connell. "money monster" is in theaters on may 13th. up next, the music is day wave. ? with my moderate to severe crohn's disease,... ...i was always searching for ways to manage my symptoms. i thought i had it covered. then i realized managing was all i was doing. when i finally told my doctor, he said humira was for people like me who have tried other medications,... but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe crohn's disease. in clinical studies,

i was a delivery guy for a paper company for a while. and i valet parked cars and i was telling my grandmother at one point. she was like, "oh, what have you been up to gabe?" i was telling her about all this party i was valeting at and she kind of listened to me really patiently and she was like, "gabe, you're a musician. why are you valet parking cars? you need to be making music." at that point i just decided, "yeah, this is ridiculous." >> grandma talked some sense into you. >> she did. ? redemption way back home ? >> my name is gabe dixon. i'm a singer, songwriter, piano player, and i have a new record out. it's called "turns to gold." ? i'm trying to find my way back home waiting on that redemption ? ? oh somebody save my soul ? >> that redemption. it kind of has like a gospel-y like bluesy kind of flavor to it and so we thought "redemption, that sort of like a gospel, kind of spiritual type of word and

maybe this is about somebody who -- they're just a little of themselves and they're a little like, they're kind of valuing the wrong things. you know? ? ? who you gave you moves girl moves girl moves girl ? ? i'm bout to lose ya sooner or later ? >> piano's been such a huge part of my life since i was like six years old. you know? majored in classical piano in college and also just became obsessed with people like elton john and ben folds and billy joel when i wa it's kind of how i expressed myself. ? i claimed your lovin' on your lovin' on your lovin' on me ? ? i claimed you lovin' on your lovin' on you lovin' on me ? >> playing music with paul mccartney was one of the best experiences of my life. we're getting to play on his "driving rain" album, hang out with him for six weeks was an unbelievable experience. when he asked me to go on tour, it was one of those things where i just, i was like, "man i wish i could do both." you know?

2:45 am
thing i did right ? >> i think at the end of the day, i just love to play music and sing and have people connect with it. you know? like if i sing one of my songs and somebody comes up to me after the show and they're like, "you know i was moved to tears by your song," then i'm like, okay i did my job. >> so you won't stop until every american cries. >> exactly. yeah, not a dry eye in the entire world. >> that's whenou yeah. ? waiting on that redemption oh somebody save my soul ? ? ? ? ? i got wise in my ways i'm too good to be true ?
