even been dropped but we'll deal with torrential rains this morning. moderate to heavy rain now approaching washington, d.c. and baltimore. heavier rains in and around new york city this morning and light rain in the areas of new england. a slow morning commute and maybe the airports a little slow many the northeast. today, scattered storms in the southeast. also the ohio valley will have scattered storms. into saturday, there will be some afternoon by the end of the weekend it gets very hot and toasty in the middle of the country. here's a closer look at your day ahead. so for today, the afternoon hours will be much better than this morning in areas from philadelphia through new york city, hartford, providence all the way up into boston and afternoon thunderstorms typical summertime variety in areas of the midwest today. so not too bad of a weekend coming for many people.

shackles. how police finally caught up with him. some rain falling early this morning. it looks like it may continue through the day. let's get over to chris lambert with a peek of that forecast. >> chris: especially this morning, kris. we have the chance of localized flooding. the best chance down through the islands if you get any downpours there. otherwise temperatures this morning mid to upper 70s. what a humid air mass in place. dew points in the low to mid-70s. plenty of moisture in the sp door. it's like a steam bath. a couple sprinkles in the city of boston. some light rain stretches back through much of metro west. we've had localized, heavier pockets of rain in worcester county, west of the city of worcester. a few towns have picked up a half an inch to an inch of rain, but that's localized, not area-wide. i expect that to be the case this morning. a few downpours in some towns. other than that just more of a general rain right now. what we're tracking in terms of

through overnight last night and this morning is this ban that you see developing off the mid atlantic coastline. if this were further off to the north, i think we'd have a better chance of getting more rain widespread. the main batch of this rain is mainly south of new england, perhaps skirting along the south coast, especially across the islands. so that's where we'll watch the potential of some flash flooding. for the rest of us. i'm expecting partly sunny skies to break out by this afternoon. shower or thundershower left over this afternoon, but the best chance of widespread showers will be this morning through about lunchtime. breaks in some sun this afternoon. more on that in the weekend forecast as "today in new england" starts right now. >> i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> christa: hillary in the history books. hillary clinton accepting her party's nomination and putting her focus squarely on donald trump.
