is hoping to capture a gold medal that evaded her in 2 previous olympics. >> reporter: as an olympic veteran byle is used to be on the biggest stage. in 2008 bizzle was the youngest athlete on the olympic team. >> on phelps. i was so young. >> reporter: returning for her third olympic games as captain. >> for me my role on the team is not necessarily winning the medals or being the face of the sport. it's more behind the scenes and being a cheer leader. >> reporter: the rhode island native made a splash at the age of 5. >> growing up in rhode island it's an ocean state. i loved the water.

work out in. my parents got that energy out of me by plopping me in a pool. >> reporter: made her way to massachusetts to join the blue fish swim club. >> they drove me there and back every day without a question. just for me to live my olympic dream. i owe all my successes to them. >> reporter: her parents and her home state supporting her all the way. >> rhode island has been the biggest support system i've since my olympic journey. i have an anchor tattooed on my rib for rhode island. i love it that much. >> reporter: an event she took silver in london. it's a race she's approaching differently. >> i know this is possibly my last olympics. i do want to make the most of it. i want to make sure i'm leaving my olympic experience the way i want to leave it.

>> reporter: first medals will be handed out tomorrow. here's a look at who finished in the top medal count in london 4 years ago. team u.s.a. the winner capturing 46 medals. from beijing to london there's a list of olympic venues as recognizable as the athletes themselves.

>> reporter: competition will be happening all over the city. rio show casing best locations to make it all shine. over the course of 19 days athletes are going for gold in rio de janeiro. rio is hoping to shine as well. it's the first south american city to host the olympic games. organizing venues around its most iconic city itself. it's legendary soccer stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the soccer finals. in the north home to rugby 7s and bmx and equestrian. and rio's famous copa cab anabeach will get a role in the home to beach volleyball. that's the home of the olympic park as well as the olympic

staying. this is where the world's best gymnasts, tennis players compete behind me. where michael phelps will compete. one trait of the olympic park is how compact it is. these arenas will host judo, wrestling, fencing and basketball. and they're supposed to represent the mountains of rio. this is where it happens. the world coming together in a spectacular celebration of and those venues will be opening up shortly. the olympic park isn't open to the public yet. in rioinance lechen 7 news. >> reporter: thank you nancy. carry walsh jennings aiming for her 4th olympic gold medal in rio. before they step foot on copa cab anabeach they had to get to

journey. >> the olympic zone united for over 35 years. >> reporter: embarking on the road to rio. the athletes quest for gold kicks off with a journey itself. for beach volleyball teammates carry walsh jennings and april roth. >> we leave tomorrow. so exciting. >> farewell to home in california. >> here we go. off to the airport. here's my chauffeur. >> reporter: before they head to brazil there's a stop in houston for processing. [cheering]. >> reporter: that includes everything from trying on new gear and goodies.
