>> christa: we begin with breaking news. tom brady speaking out. the quarterback making his first public statement since dropping his legal suspension. brady says he is trying to move on and stay positive. >> sarah: jonathan hall with more live at gillette. jon? >> reporter: hey, guys. good afternoon. tom brady speaks. we are hearing from the future hall of famer for the very first time since he decided to drop his federal court appeals and accept his four-game deflate-gate suspension.

brady decided not to go all the way to the u.s. supreme court. he is going to take his medicine and sit out the first four games. as of saturday, september 3, in the afternoon, he is not to practice, not play, do any team activities at all for a full month. tb 12 came out. word filtered through the press core here that brady would speak. indeed, he did. as soon as practice ended. just after 11:00. about said that he is trying to stay positive. through all of. this he told us he is trying to get better, to do everything he can. >> we have the best fans in

garoppolo, the back-up quarterback who will take center stage underneath the hot spotlight. for the first four weeks. brady did not answer that question. but gronk did. i asked gronk about it. he said garoppolo is sharp, getting better every week. and today at the scrimmage, brady handled the offense on one side. garoppolo handling the offense on the other. in effect, it was tom brady versus jimmy garoppolo here at this scrimmage today. reporting live from gillette, i'm jonathan hall, 7 news. >> sarah: sky 7 over the scene in haverhill. a hole in the bridge on 495 south causing traffic problems. chux of concrete came loose on the bridge that runs over the merrimack river. crews are making emergency repairs right now to the bridge. but expect big delays. >> christa: a two-year-old danvers child pulled from his family's pool last night has died at boston children's hospital. danvers police received a 911 call of a near drowning during a small gathering of family and friends.

in the pool by family members who then began cpr. right now, the case is being investigated by danvers police and state police detectives. >> sarah: also on 7: a worker recovering after a danger on the job in newton. his foot gets twisted around the blade in a cement mixer. firefighters and rescue crews were left with a difficult rescue. >> a painful predicament for this worker. they were final little able to get him free. here is victoria warren with the latest on what happened. >> reporter: yeah. really a terrible situation. his fellow coworkers, they are back here on the scene today. well, he continues his recovery in the hospital. the fire department saying that they can't give us too many particulars about exactly how he was injured. but they did give us the update today, saying that he is doing okay. and he is stable. rushed to the hospital. a newton construction worker recovering after an awful accident. the 22-year-old man's leg trapped in a cement mixer.

heard him scream. he yelled... he ran over and unplugged it and shut the machine offer. >> new details about the painstaking efforts to free limb. he was awake for the entire two-hour ordeal. >> it was a great job done by boston. the rescue team. brookline. our personnel as well. >> reporter: itoo hand to rescue him. >> we couldn't use a torch because the ankle was wrapped around the auger. and the heat from the torch would burn the victim. we couldn't cut it with our... cut it with our jaws. >> crews back on site. as their fellow construction worker continues recovering. still unclear how the man fell into the mixer.

like, four feet high. i don't know how his leg got in there. but that is still under investigation. >> reporter: and that investigation continues. newton's fire department tells me that osha will take the lead on this investigation. and it will likely take some time. live in newton, victoria warren, 7 news. >> sarah: some of boston's finest fighting for more protection. the police union calling for better protective gear like helmets and ves. this comes in the wake of violence nicole oliverio has a closer look. boston police unions are taking aim at the city's mayor and police commissioner. in a scathing letter, the union demanded more needs to be done to protect officers out in the streets. it read in part, "we have requested long guns for our patrol officers. we now demand it. the need is necessary and the

heated. it is what it is. report t letter comes after officers were ambushed and murdered in dallas and baton rouge. the police union begged for more officers and more equipment like ballistic helmets. this, as the boston police patrolman's association also tweeted out a picture of officers and kids with the caption "who needs police gear, we have hoodsies." referring to the boston police's new $89,000 ice cream truck, meant to foster goodwill and help with community engagement. commissioner evans s priority but believed that union's letter was a bit much. >> i think he is speaking from the heart. you know, i wish some of the words he didn't use. a little offensive. but i think it's a hard time to be a police officer now. i know where he is coming from. report t commissioner says the department is reviewing all of its policies to see if there are any changes that could be made. in boston, nicole oliverio, 7 news.

expressing concerns about the police department's voluntary body camera program. they told officials they were upset. officers have not been wearing body cameras during a public hearing thursday night. officials had announced some officers would begin wearing the cameras last month. police commissioner william evans says no volunteers have come forward to where the camera is. he will likely assign officers to take part in the program. >> sarah: in the race for the white house: new polls showing hillary clinton growing in her lead against the republican. this comes as more politicians back down party's nominee. >> do you want a president who stands for your... you're fired or one who stands for you're hired! he has cheated contractors. i take that personally. >> reporter: several new polls put hillary clinton in the lead. clinton is up nine points in the latest nbc-"wall street journal" poll. 15, according to mcclampy marist.

the rest of us flirting with 90 degrees. as we get into this afternoon. a great day to beat the heat by heading to the beach. a very faint sea breeze. shouldn't have anything to do with those observation sites temperatures. it might feel refreshing to you. something else that is comfortable would be the level of humidity. dew points really staying in check for us through most of the day today. when you are below 60 degrees with the dew points, that is a comfortable amount of moisture in the air. when you get above that, into this evening, overnight tonight, the dew points will be rising, though. and tomorrow, the humidity will definitely be noticeable. we are in for another warm day tomorrow. but also humid. might make it feel even warmer than those upper 80's that you see there. we are watching out for scattered showers and thunderstorms. that may affect those outdoor plans like the pan mass challenge. high pressure is in place today. then we turn our attention to this front. you see it out here.

through into this afternoon and this evening. for us, the timing of this looks to be tomorrow. midday into the afternoon. behind it, we get less humid air. that surges back in for sunday. however, we will also be watching out for the risk for severe weather. some of storms could prove to be strong to even severe. and the spc has put us in the marginal category for that. the main threat would be heavy straight-line damaging wind gusts. as well as locally heavy which we could really use. not in the severe area. we can't buy a rain-drop right now. for more on the drought, danielle gersh. >> danielle: thanks. we don't necessarily need the severe weather. we will take any rain we can get. this stretch from june 1 to early august in lawrence and reading than driest on record. both places, 20% to 30% below average where they should be in the rainfall department. for the past about two months. we certainly do need the rain. and in boston and in worcester, since january 1, the rainfall

that appeal. according to legal experts. brady grudgingly agreed to the punishment handed out to him by the n.f.l. commissioner roger goodell. brady is on the field practicing this week. as of saturday, september 3, sometime in the afternoon, he is not to practice, not to participate in any team activities. of course, not to play for four games. he told us he is trying to get better in these scrimmages and do everything he can until he has to shut it down due to that n.f.l. suspension. >> i tried to positive as i can be. that has always been my motto. in the course of my career, i have been faced with different things. i tried to overcome them the best way i could or knew how. you know, i do the same thing. i want to go out there and play really well. hav had really good competition. we are trying to push each other so that we are ready to go. i mean, it is tough competition in the n.f.l. you know, every team is

become strong to even up to severe criteria. we will have to talk more about the timeline on that to come in a few minutes. >> christa: okay. meantime, investigators are trying to figure out what caused this house to explode in connecticut. right now, crews are back on the scene. they are digging through some of the debris. we are also hearing from people who witnessed the blast. >> i was cooking in my apartment. this afternoon. when i heard a boom. a huge explosion rocking vernon, connecticut home. and the force of the blast sending pieces of that home flying when it collapsed. four people, including a 7-year-old child had to be pulled from the debris. when police got there, one adult and two children were already outside the collapsed house. and investigators say the young child that had to be pulled from what was left of the home has significant injuries. >> what i can tell you so far is that at least four people, we confirm very, been inside the house. when it collapsed.

responders arrived. they were injured and have been transported to the hospital. since i have been here, rescue crews pulled at least one injured child from the home. a young child. >> one guy in the very beginning, he was like, picking away debris. where the front porch used to be. he could hear them. we knew that they were okay. >> reporter: you can see police diing through the debris. trying to figure out exactly what happened. the explosion not leaving behind much. we also know that three of those children remain in the hospital, including the 7-year-old boy. and officials say none of their injuries appear to be life-threatening. >> sarah: we are back in the olympic zone. gisele bundchen taking center stage in rio tonight. mrs. tom brady has a starring role in the opening ceremonies. this is video. the today show got its hands on it from a rehearsal from the other night. she looks like she is having a great time, doesn't she?

tonight's opening ceremony, they will be decked out in amazing outfits. parts of them were made here in new england. >> christa: nancy chen with the story. >> nancy: the olympic athletes will all be decked out for team sauf. part of the uniforms were made right in new england. we got a closer look. before the athletes change into their uniforms and go for gold, they will dress to impress in red, white, and blue for the opening ceremonies. when they step on to international stage here in shoes made in maine. >> i have great pride in the fact that we are going to make shoes that will be seen in the world stage. >> nancy: ralph lauren approached mike rancourt last year. >> it was an immediate response. i was so proud to be asked. the answer was, of course, yes. >> nancy: their mission for him and his team, to make the boat shoes worn in the opening and closing ceremonies. >> for the women, it started

for us. we keep an eye out for storms. current temperatures, warming up to that warm sunshine. already into the mid-80's. going to be a hot one. but humidity remains in check for today. so it really should be an enjoyable warmth. maybe you are hitting the beach or cape and the islands. staying in the upper 70's for today. with a southwesterly flow. now, talking about the weekend forecast. a lot of outdoor activities. i get that. it is not the best thing to have these storms to watch out for. for tomorrow. i cancel your plajs. yo belexibl with those plans. come inside for a time. then heading back out afterwards. the storm's prediction center has issued us a marginal risk for severe weather tomorrow. that means that either scattered storms we are expecting. some storms have the potential to become strong and even up to severe criteria. so again, it is a day to be aware of what's coming in the forecast. this main threat for these storms will be strong damaging

the rhode island native is looking to gout on top in what will likely be her final games. >> christa: she is hoping to capture the elusive gold medal now that she is in rio. nancy chen has more on today's hometown hero. >> nancy: as an olympic veteran, elizabeth beisel is used to being on the world's biggest stage. she has been here before. she says she is looking forward to making the best of it. in beisel was the youngest athlete on the u.s. olympic swim team. >> i was just so, you know, like, a deer in a headlights. on a team with michael phelps. and ryan lochte and stuff. i was so young. >> nancy: eight years later, it is her third olympic games as captain. >> for me, my role on the team is not necessarily winning the medals or being the face of the sport.
