>> chris: hard to keep track. 70 degrees in boston. low to mid-60s in the suburbs. good morning, everyone. we have abincrease of humidity during the day and some rain drops on the way. what is that, right? we haven't seen much of any rain lately. we have mainly quiet conditions across a lot of new england now. but just to the west of us, already closing in on albany new york and across western vermont. there are some showers working on in. this goes all the way back to buffalo. this is a batch of showers and rumbles of thunder mid-morning to early to mid-afternoon for scattered showers and storms to work on. they become more isolated late in the day and early this evening. not quite as hot as yesterday away from the coastline. near 90. i think we'll be closer to 80 to 85 this afternoon. middle part of the day, butg th- there's no holding back the heat tomorrow. we are talking about temperatures well into the 90s. you factor in the humidity, it will feel more like 100 degrees.

>> sarah: the u.s. men's rugby teams and patriots' safety nate ebner looking to stay alive. after losing to argentina on tuesday, the team beat brazil. ebner played a pivotal role in the win. he scored a try at the end of the first quarter to give the u.s. the lead. the u.s. plays top-ranked fiji in a must-win game this afternoon. the u.s. has increased its lead in theal eight silvers and nine bronze during these games. china is second with 17 medals and japan is currently third with 14. of course, 7news is your home for the summer olympic games. our own nancy chen is in rio bringing you all the latest results. you can catch her live report in our next half hour. >> christa: happening now, man behind bars after police say he went on a crime spree in

raped a woman while she was in her office yesterday. she says that he had a knife during that attack. then police say they got a call sayin the man forced his way into another woman's car. that second victim says the suspect sexually assaulted her in that car before she was able to get out. police then received a report of an armed robbery at a business. that's when officers say they found the suspect, who they believe is responsible for all of these incidents. the two female victims meantime were taken to the hospital and th later on today. >> sarah: now to a story you'll see on just one station. 7news has learned the department of public health is reviewing what happened inside an operating room at a hospital in worcester. 7news has more now from worcester. >> reporter: it's a startling allegation that a surgeon here at st. vincent hospital in worcester operated on the wrong patient and removed that patient's kidney.

public health about the incident. d.p.h. responded with this short statement, "d.p.h. is aware of this incident and it is currently under review." a spokesperson for st. vincent hospital would not confirm any details of the incident but gave 7news this statement, "due the patient privacy laws, we are unable to comment on specific patient cases. the staff at st. vincent hospital is committed to providing everyone we serve." i asked the hospital for information on verifying someone's identity before surgery, but so far i haven't gotten a response. outside st. vincent hospital in worcester, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: thank you. we have more news today. people in princeton are coming together to remember a young woman who was killed while she was out jogging. dozens of people showing up for a vigil in honor of vanessa marcotte. the 27-year-old was out for a

sunday night. the community is offering flowers and prayers for her and they're questioning why this young woman was killed. >> my daughter runs the same route that vanessa does. she said she'll never run again. we all are very nervous about this. it's a tragedy. >> christa: so far police haven't made any arrests, and they say they don't know yet whether the attack was random. aide facing a judge after disturbing allegations. police say steven mcdonald sexually assaulted a student with special needs repeatedly in the boy's bathroom at malden high school starting last year. prosecutors also say mcdonald threatened to kill the boy's mother if he resisted. he's facing multiple charges, including rape. >> christa: your time is 4:40 right now. still ahead, a painful practice for the pats.

>> christa: we were just talking about the fact that michael phelps eats 10,000 calories a day. he could get started in the newsroom with the doughnuts. ism we have doughnuts and cookie cake. whatever. we can eat it. we're not competing in the olympics. >> chris: a dozen doughnut, a stack of pain cake, a side of bacon. forget the breakfast sampler. he's ordering everything on the menu. 70 degrees in boston. we have another mild start to the day, although warmer than yesterday, so in some of the suburbs. we're watching the increase today and the increase of some showers and storms across new england as we go throughout the day. we haven't had much of that lately, right? a couple days picture-perfect out there. not the case today. a lot more clouds to the west of us. scattered showers and storms will be rolling on in, especially mid to late morning through about early afternoon. i think that's when they're most widespread. but even still mid-to-late afternoon there will be a couple isolated storms still out and about. the atmosphere has plenty of moisture with it.

localized downpours. that doesn't mean everyone will see it. it is summertime. some towns get hit with a good dose of rain and other towns zip. i think that's going to be the case as we go through much of the day today. so rainfall amounts varying from town to town. we have an opportunity to have rain in here. and you see that first working on in. and perhaps some isolated ones later today into the early evening. and then we're quiet tonight and throughout much of tomorrow. there may be a couple lingering storms down near the cape and the islands and buzzards bay this evening. towns coming away with almost nothing. other towns come away with close to an inch of rain. that's the way it goes. not to say these locations work out exactly. but this will show you how it can vary from town to town. 59 the dew point in boston. still comfortable right now. but there is a huge surge in humidity just to the south and west of us. that's going to work on in. dew point levels jumping in from the upper 60s today. we're right there.

saturday. this is also accompanied by temperatures running 90 plus. we deal with heat and humidity for thursday, friday and saturday. as we get into the weekend, especially on saturday. i think the storm is more scattered in the afternoon. you notice the boundary to the north of us with downpours riding right along that boundary. i think this boundary settles into the south sunday into monday. sunday into monday would be the best chance to get most widespread action across southern new england with embedded downpours. we'll look forward to that. i know you don't want the hear a sunday afternoon, but we could use a lot of rain across the area. i think that's the next best chance to get some widespread action once we get beyond today some scattered showers and storms today. low to mid-80s. mid-80s, a piece of sun this afternoon. early storm across southeastern mass. mild and muggy overnight. air conditioners back on at night. that will be the theme the next several days. look at this, heat indices close to 100. air temperatures in the mid-90s. isolated storm on saturday.

>> christa: chris, thank you. a pair of pats' starters dealing with some injuries. receiver julian edelman and defensive end rob ninkovich are temporarily down and out after getting hurt during a joint practice with the saints yesterday. ninkovich suffered a torn tricep. according to reports, the defensive end is expected to rehab the injury and avoid surgery. he could possibly return as early as october. and just two days after being removed from the physically unable to perform list, edelman suffering an injur surgically repaired left foot. he limped off the field, but the injury does not appear to be serious as he didn't do any further damage to the foot. teammates know they'll need edelman back at full strength when the regular season begins. >> that's my teammate. obviously you want him to be as healthy as possible. but at the end of the day, you can't stop. you have to keep competing. >> a lot of guys like julian

boy died on a water slide is set to reopen. police say ten-year-old caleb schwab was killed when he injured his neck falling off a 168-foot slide on sunday. the park had been closed since the accident happened. officials say the ride where the young boy was killed will remain closed today. a federal judge has ordered glenn beck to name two confidential sources he used to report on the boston marathon bombings. as part of a defamation lawsuit filed against the talk show host. the victim was initially named as a person of interest but he claimed beck continued to report he was involved in the attack after he was cleared. the judge says beck's testimony about his sources was contradictory. >> christa: donald trump defending some controversial comments in the race for the white house today. he told a group of supporters if hillary clinton is elected as president, second amendment supporters might "do something about it." so democrats believe that trump
