good morning. 100 and counting. team usa hits a medals milestone. ashton eaton winning gold in the decathlon to retain his title as the world's greatest athlete and jamaica' dashes into the record books once again. and vandals not victims. overnight two of the u.s. swimmers involved in that gas station incident with ryan lochte leave rio after surveillance video proves they weren't robbed. a swimmer agreeing to donate $11,000 to get his passport back and u.s. officials issue an apology for their behavior today, friday, august 19th,

medals including ashton eaton, the world's greatest athlete times two winning the decathlon yesterday. >> by the way, that's a beautiful sight from up above. very nice. >> don't get any wrong, i'm looking forward to going home but i'm going to miss it here. >> it's been blast on the beach and fun with the athletes. we have a lot coming up overnight in that robbery scandal involving four american swimmers including ryan lochte. two of the swimmers heading home overnight after speaking with police. but we still haven't heard from ryan lochte. what does this mean for his future, for his endorsements? we'll talk to bob costas about that and then we'll look back at what an incredible two weeks it's been at the venues and here on our set, right? >> it's really been great. let's go back to new york and

>> i'm all smiles because you guys are coming back. we'll get you caught up on politics. in a surprising shift from donald trump as he does something he's never done on the campaign trail. he expressed regret for making statements that he says have caused some people pain. we'll hear from him in just a bit. for now, we'll send it back to you in rio. >> all right, savannah. thank you very much. let's talk about that scandal that continues to evolve. it involves those u.s. swimmers including ryan lochte. their claims of being officials. the usoc apologizing. keir simmons is at the gas station where it all happened. keir, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this is the gas station that you're about to see in security footage. what's stunning this morning is that an altercation here could turn into an international incident. as you can see, there are security cameras surrounding this gas station.

what really happened would not come out. overnight a brokered deal with brazil. jimmy feigen's attorney saying the swimmer agreed to donate $11,000 to a brazilian charity to resolve the case. >> anything you would like to say to your supporters? >> reporter: hours earlier, gunnar bentz and jack conger allowed to leave brazil after giving statements to police their brazilian lawyer is taking a shot reporters they didn't speak with any journalists or lie to any journalists. they were just quiet and didn't know what was happening. the usoc now confirming the police version of events investigators saying the gold medalists were never robbed. evidence security video from early sunday. at 5:47 a.m., swimmers ryan lochte and jimmy feigen are seen

at 6:07 a.m. you can see one head toward the back of the gas station near the bathrooms. a minute later the four emerge followed by a gas station employee. concerned because the swimmers had vandalized the bathroom. that's one of the security cameras that filmed the footage. the swimmers walk through here and further down as you can see an advertisement appears to have been pulled from the wall. at the back are restrooms that were badly ge the swimmers return to their cab. at 6:09 their driver gets in and security guard approaches reaching out. it's unclear if he has something in his hand. at 6:12 after a discussion, the swimmers exit the taxi. at 6:14 we see a different angle. in the upper left you can see swimmers put their hands up and sit down. a guard approaches them with his hand on the hip. one of the guards told

weapon to gain control of four large athletes one of whom was getting aggressive. the guards let them go after they handed over $50 to pay for the bathroom damage. this is a very different story from the one lochte first told "today's" bush. >> these guys came out with a police badge. no lights. no nothing. police badge. they pulled out their guns and then the guy pulled out his gun. he cocked it. put it to my forehead. >> reporter: in the days since that interview lochte changed details but sticking to the story they were robbed. the american embarrassment forcing usoc to apologize to the people of brazil. the behavior of these athletes is not acceptable nor does it represent the values of team usa or the conduct of the vast majority of its members.

occurs not here at the gas station but beside it at the car wash. this is where you can see in that security footage the swimmers sitting at the curbside. they are having a conversation with gas station officials. what swimmers say is there was no one there who spoke english. brazilian officials say there was a translator. the swimmers, perhaps, didn't understand why they were being asked for money. brazilians saying they made it perfectly clear. perhaps all of this translation. guys? >> all right, keir, thank you very much. we can confirm that gunnar bentz and gunnar bentz have landed back in the united states. we've spoken to jimmy feigen this morning. he confirmed that he has revised the statement he originally gave to the police. he's agreed to pay that $11,000 in restitution. that will get him his passport back. he's not in possession of his passport right now.

>> no word from ryan lochte yet. >> not yet. bring in nbc's bob costas, host of prime time show here on nbc. there have been so many incredibly great stories over the last couple weeks. this story is dominating the headlines over the last three days, bob. in the future, will this be seen as a footnote to these games or something more? >> i think it might be more than a footnote. it's not going to be a dominant story. so many historic things sportswise happened here and although we have our fingers crossed and a weekend back, there have been a few glitches but by in large none of the things we feared about olympics in rio have come to pass. they've done a good job hosting. people have been wonderful. we've all had a good experience and we have come away with dozens and dozens of memories of great sports events and people we met and interacted with so this while i'm not trying to mip mi minimize it, this won't be something in the end that's at

this story got because it hit a sensitive spot in rio the fact that there were these robbers with badges and things like that. how much bigger did it get because of this? >> they are rightly concerned with the image of rio as a place that has security you associate with olympics and terrorism aside, they have a legitimate issue with street crime. nobody denies this. if this had been true, they want the world to believe they would whoever was responsible. if it turns out not to be true, they don't want this to besurge their reputation. >> what's the future for these swimmers particularly ryan lochte in terms of endorsement and future in the sport? what's the impact? >> he's the bold face name. the others more or less get a pass. people forget about it or say they were younger not a big deal. he's the central figure. as you said, swimmers make most

spencer taking the bronze. on the men's side, winning gold in the 400 hurdles. and in the shot put, american ryan crouser also grabbing gold with a new olympic record and a silver delivering a one-two punch in the in women's wrestling, another gold overcoming the three-time olympic champion from japan crying tears of joy from the podium. >> i didn't start as a tough girl. i lacked a lot of self-confidence and wrestling has given me that. >> american women steam rolled france winning their semifinal match getting set to face spain

round. and finally a relay redo for the american women initially failing to qualify in the 4x100 meter relay after allyson felix made contact with a brazilian runner. >> they dropped the stick. >> causing this botched baton handoff but americans were allowed to run again. >> she has the baton. >> in take two, americans managed to qualify for remain unchanged. u.s. and china, great britain and china. u.s. with a commanding lead there. take a look at that number for team usa. 100 through thursday. the fourth straight summer games of 100 medals or more. how much do we love that? and coming up today, the men's and women's 4x100 relay. the gold medal match in women's soccer. it will be sweden versus germany.

you mentioned that gold for ashton eaton in the decathlon. the world's greatest athlete is on with us at copacabana beach. can we just say the world's greatest athlete times two. how does it feel the second time around? >> i'm a little bit more sore now. it feels good. >> this is one of these things that goes over two days. you're known for building up the lead. how were you feeling going into lead? >> i have to admit there were times when i was doubtful. it was a good thing because there's these young kids coming up really pushing me. that challenge is what i thrive on. i rose to the challenge. i'm glad i did. >> on thursday during pole vault you had that amazing pouch.

i'm not sure if this is in the bag. i think at that moment i knew that all my training not just for the last four years but really my whole life, physical and mental, led up to that point. >> all comes down to the 1,500 meter. how much pressure were you feeling standing at the beginning of that race? >> you know what? normally i'm very nervous. i feel a lot of pressure. i'm willing to run myself into the hospital if i have to to get this. i was actually in aol going to step up and do this, ashton? i made a pact with myself. yes, if i have to go to the hospital to run that hard, i'll do it. >> you have ridiculous criticism for wearing canadian cap when in reality your beautiful bride who is here with us is from canada. you were cheering her on. >> you competed. you won bronze as well. how do you guys split the focus?

florida. at least two more cases apparently traced to miami beach. nbc's kerry sanders is there for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the florida department of health confirms there are now 35 cases of locally acquired zika in south florida. the majority of those have been concentrated in a neighborhood in miami called wynwood but now sources are telling nbc news that the health officials strongly suspect miami beach. acquired again from local mosquitos. to get at that this morning, the mosquito control efforts on the beach have taken off with a vengeance. they are spraying insecticide and at risk not just pregnant women but also a tourism industry here valued at $24

important to note that the department of health have not confirmed cases at miami beach but we have confirmed that cases are being investigated and the battle on the beach is now a full-on war. >> we have all hands on deck. this has been going on since january. i wouldn't want to be a mosquito on miami beach. that's for sure. >> reporter: to try to get an understanding of how important this is here, not only $24 billion but since zika was discovered in south tourism, advance booking at hotels, dropped 72%. of course we need to factor into that it's the end of summer, people are getting back to school and getting kids ready so it may not be directly linked to zika but it's something they're watching closely here. >> absolutely. tourism important where you're standing. thank you. we move to the presidential race and rare admission from donald trump. the republican nominee expressing regret for the first time during the campaign for
