11:02 am
floor is bye-bye. >> here's the thing. you know what did survive the flood? we shouldn't laugh about big with loading and everything going on in louisiana. the pair of shoes you had for nine years, since we started working together, they survived the flood. we want to say welcome, officially, to billy bush. >> of course. >> i hope you watched in the earlier hour. it was moving and touching. >> and by the way, watching his mom and dad. but something about watching his folks. >> so real. >> and watching how much he loved his parents. he's joined the nine. >> we have a party today, too. a great show. you're having a little "today's buzz" withdraw, we're going to get that taken care of. any of the gossip you want,
11:03 am
lambert. and kellie pickler is here. her and her husband have that reality show about the country couple and their antics. we're going to take some questions, too. >> and there's time to squeeze in one last vacation over labor day. affordable getaways across the country. and from grade school to adulthood, we have to deal with rejection from time-to-time. >> we do. >> we all have. and we got some advice to help you cope. >> that is baby. >> here's what's cool. our "today" show set was on the beach. the hotel was right near the set. you wake up in the morning, go to the set. your toes were in the sand and you interviewed happy people, all these great olympians that had won all kinds of stuff. we had a lot of fun with the group. everyone was asking about you. everywhere i went. where is kathie lee? is kathy lee here? is she at the other stadium?
11:04 am
>> she doesn't travel well. no, no. it was great, huh? >> yeah. we have fun pictures of the whole posse. that's us at christ the redemer. so cloudy and overcast. except for one moment where the clouds lifted and it was gorgeous. we did some trips. went to sugar loaf. by the way, that was a game called speedo. it was called beach volley. foot v it was called. >> you couldn't get matt into it? >> oh, my god, i'm wearing the same dress. >> nobody would have noticed if you hadn't said. >> my favorite moment of the whole thing was these finals, the final -- they called themselves the final five. i was interviewing simone. and she said her big crush was zac efron. i said look at the camera and
11:05 am
i wish you would come here. and she said, if he were to come, i would need a defibrillator. we smuggled him in. brought him next to the place i was going to interview thoses after they won the gold. they walk in, the girls. they were like, hey. we're laughing and hugging. and i open up the door and look who is standing there. >> oh, my gosh. >> laurie went up and simone couldn't handle it. and by the way, she kept saying it was like her best day. she passed out. >> and the stage is set. >> wow. >> he was such a great guy and a great sport. >> and i didn't realize -- he's popular everywhere. but you said down there, he's got a clothing line that's insane. he's like ricky martin. >> yes. he was trying to advertise.
11:06 am
he tried to go to a mall. they couldn't get him in the mall, it was so jammed. >> oh, wow. >> he was -- by the way, the final five, all five of them who want to meet you, are here tomorrow. >> oh, good. look forward to that. and my favorite -- my favorite was when abbe d'agostino fell during the women's 500. and the runner from new zealand falls. you know they're not medal. d'agostino picks up the girl from new zealand and they start running. d'agosti d'agostino, a tore meniscus. and this girl helps her up again. >> bless her. >> and she finished the race. >> all of the medalists were
11:07 am
i said specifically, i'll never forget you. when you give your graduation speech, that's the story you're going to tell. not the story of the gold, the silver, the bronze. >> remind you of why you're down there. we hear about the bad behavior. and you hear about the good behavior. and it restores your faith. >> rio was amazing. with all of the hoopla. they were gracious. the u.s. did well. i thought brazil brought it. and brazil reminds me of new orleans. do you like us? is the food good? you having fun? like the insecure friend. it was just fun to watch it. >> they were going through tough times and still going through them. we have an olympian in training. >> who? >> in my house. i spent necessary time, which i never really took after frank passed. it's been a year since he
11:08 am
be my loved ones. and so, i got my wish. this is my olympian, schecky, in training on my yard. he had never been willing to walk on the grass before. you never know what's going to happen. his great grandfather was the fastest runner in maryland when he was 14. go, schecky, go. anyway, i was in heaven. >> how cute is he, by the way? birthday. >> happy birthday, by the way. >> it was a super birthday. the "today" show did a big thing on the website about my birthday. and kathie turning 62. they took a year off for me. i was thrilled. apparently john oliver had fun with his opening ceremony thing. another highlight for hoda,
11:09 am
see what he had to say. >> a buildup to the rio games has been turbulent, with brazil experiencing massive recession, protest in the streets and a zika outbreak. on friday, nbc urged us to forget all that and focus on the opening ceremony. >> they are ready for tonight, to put the headlines aside, and hit the reset button and throw one massive party. >> did somebody said party? >> oh, no. oh, no. hoda got into the caparhina supply. watch yourself, she gets grabby. >> she didn't know what was coming. >> oh, no. by the way, this is one of our favorite moments of the day today. it's called puppy love. >> yes. >> we have a new puppy at the "today" show.
11:10 am
service dog for military veterans. he's 8 weeks. >> so beautiful. and we're going to help decide his name, right? >> yes. give him a name. >> you want to come to auntie kathie. lick me with your puppy tongue. do it. oh, i grabbed something else. this little guy -- >> hi. >> this puppy is olivia and she's going to be in the studio with us. welcome. >> thank you. >> we want you to vote on his name. military-inspired. >> here's the choices. >> go to today.com. >> soarge, charlie, or ace. >> i put my vote in for sarge. >> i don't care. the audio guys are going crazy. and tomorrow, we have our puppy. and we have his name. >> you're going to be with us,
11:11 am
in the mornings. and then, come home with me in the evenings, a normal puppy life at home. and will get to learn the ropes. >> and then, he will be trained to be with one of our brave men. >> yes. >> that is amazing. >> that's very, very special. >> he just fell asleep. >> oh, goodness. >> it's a party. >> does he have play dates at people's houses? >> anytime. >> he can play with lola. >> blake wouldn't like him. we have to go. thank you, olivia. >> guys, i'm going to need to wash my hand, just saying. if you leave right now, you'll miss our favorite things.
11:13 am
ball park franks are made with 100% angus beef for a juicy bold taste. the only thing better than 100% angus beef. i don't know 200% you're welcome america. ball park 100% angus franks. break situation gong with owe fall up dating let's listen in. massachutes first i of all beginning early notifications all of in concorde that cell phones received notification around there was potential for tornado in our area and at least put people on early alert that was possible. unfortunately we are not aware of any injuries. and quite few customer are without power. but we have grateful to our neighbor is communities that have provided support from the fire departments, and the municipal electrical departments and other communities for damage assessments i will turn it over to our emergency management
11:14 am
>> chief? >> >> good morning. good afternoon. whichever one it is. so we -- as recap, we were watching the reports on the tornado and we had received prior notification that we in line in the line travel of the cell of concern. and so at about 3:17 this morning, we received the of a tree down and arrived to find this. which is, approximately, one neighborhood plus another part of another neighborhood, heavily damaged from this severe storm activity which i am sure that meterologist will talk about.
11:15 am
we had surrounding towns in. the first thing you want to do when something like this get your arms around it, and do what we call an initial damage assessment. find out kinds of in quick and dirty way what we got our hands on. we did that and short order. probably roughly an hour and hour and half and then, at a second damage assessments which more methodical. it is slower. and more careful. and at this time, we have -- we have completed that. and we have 39 houses that were damaged in some way. but by a miracle just one house with significant structural damage. so 39 houses damaged.
11:16 am
structural damage. and concentrating now on opening the roads getting good access into these neighborhood. and pry otherizing. our why lying. >>. for beak resource that we can always count and they were here early on. and mutual aid fire departments continue to be here we have got, i believe, five mutual aid municipal we municipal light plain do terror i have jobbing. and so we have got five other municipal light plants that will come in here and set upon the
11:17 am
feet in those areas with the pole setting, and reestablishing the power >> no injuries. no deaths. and lots of clean up. and, restabbing access into the areas is our concentration >> i am the fire chief and emergency management director. >> thank you, chief. the director massachutes emergency management agency. i first want to start by commending first national weather service and for advanced warning that was will provided
11:18 am
for those of us who live in this area i am can cord regular dents the emergency alert system went off of, shortly before the tornado hit. and i heard it. i woke up and most importantly when you have an opportunities to see the damaged area i know you will see it, i spoke with a neighbor one. people who lived right in the middle this and told me emergency alert system woke him up. and he immediately got his family up storm coming and they went right down and took shelter just -- and just as they should. so, early warnings saves lives. second i want come commended town of con cord fire department and police department. municipal light and public works town manager for incredible quickly response. they moved all of their resources in here very quickly
11:19 am
on behalf of mema we are here to support the town initial three through response and now as it moves into a longer recovery phase. or extensive damage in neighborhood you are going to see this not going to be over today. we will continue to support them there are number of state agencies that are here sporting that we are able to bring to bear to help the town so system worked and i just really commendeded town for such a tremendous response. >> >> others are going speak to that in a moment. >> [inaudible] >> the alert emergency alert system is that wireless emergency alert that every one of your cell phones has. it is the tone that goes off so
11:20 am
tornado warnings triggers the emergency alert system. and you will receive -- if you live in the impact or in warning areas. you get the alert if you don't, live in the area you didn't hear it but for those of us who live here my cell phone went off my wife's went off. we were awoken with 15 minutes advanced notice. >> is that something on everybody's phone whether they know it or not? >> on it is on there. yes it is on all of your phones. >> hi. you are allen. last name dunham. i am meterologist at the national weather service forecast office in concorde. we have event like that our job to come out and do damage
11:21 am
the damage. mainly looking for straight line wind damage which could be micro bursts macro burst or was there a tornado? before i got any further i like thank concorde fire department without their help in escorting me around this would have taken you wouldn't have information for the noon news. so i want to thank the concorde fire department very much for their assistance. what we looked at all of damage and i am looking out trees fell whether trees werero so how far up. was there any twisting. how so? which damage is damage going. i have seen enough evidence with this the main cause main damage path which base icly about 4u7bz yards wide and about half mile long, was caused by an ef-one attorney torn. and estimated wind speed on this 100 miles an hour. >> and that was willing gb ahead finalizing everything when i get
11:22 am
preliminary public information statement to go out news media or partners. so they have already got word also. . >> and we will refine it. we will gps everything in and plot it up so we will exact. but right know approximate 400 yards wide. about half mile long. we have foundation of tornadoic activity on cambridge turn pike behind house. goldman sachscly to northeast. and then other treelgs went down to the so south southwest. and, storm itself, for this pretty much on cambridge turn pike and storm traveled to the north, northeast up across this area and into got -- basically from this area up to top of the hill is where the biggest concentration of damage was.
11:23 am
>> usually with these types of storms it is really amazing when you get out there to really look because you have one area where trees are down all over the place. next house over has nothing. so, i mean that gives outnature of any time straight line winds or tornado. it is verify night area that's involved with the damage. so you can actually say there -- i have been up on top of the hill here it is lot of devastation. >> 4oo yards for half relatively -- it is pretty un --. i can't speak to that. from my experience, i was surprised not see more trees into houses. really they just kind of way they fell, different direction between houses >> what about winds' when you saw it tells you there was tornado instead of micro burst. it is basically on the debris pattern which way the trees are going.
11:24 am
way trees fall basically. i also have couple of trees you can see twisted and then came down. basically ripped fibres off the very large mine tree. so that's type of thing you are looking for. there was one area where i had lot of trees probably 6 or 8 that were going in one direction and then bless than 15 yards away, three more trees going in the opposite direction. if it straight line wind damage all of your trees and all of your one -- you know all same direction and in this case given the path of storm, it was straight line i would have anticipateded all of the damage to be going from southwest to the northeast. and in this case, that's not what all the damage did. i had damage going in both directions. so predominantly most of wind damage was going towards the northeast. but i had enough evidence trees down and what not, that it was going opposite direction to go
11:25 am
determination. and one thing made it harder this time around is because, the grounds so dry we had lot of trees that were down that were -- usually at the ground moist it helps holds trees in. in indication, this instance, there results, go ahead deal so. i think the drought plight have some contribution to the a. damage. but it was 100 mile an hour they will do a number on trees. >> [inaudible] -- i had -- that was a long vast area. it was wider and -- caliber concentration, this typical what
11:26 am
tornado. >> [inaudible] >> get all of the way up to ef five. >> ef 0 is lowest. so right now we classifying an ef with in one. >> [inaudible] i not on shift at that time. i sleeping very first i heard about it was this morning when i turned on the tv and saw all of you guys reporting on it. >> [inaudible] >> what station with you watching? >> i am too enough of politican to say that. i bounce around several stations. is that how you guys can guess. >> over here >> i wanted to make sure that you -- >> yes. correct. >> [inaudible]
11:27 am
neat damage assessments and he they said yes. i will be in. same materials i needed did quick check of where the damage was and been in contacted with nema which was very helpful setting up our ability to work concorde fire department so that we get out and do this. lot quicker than they normally. [inaudible] i can't say definitely. winds were main cause that's the thing to take away from. the damage mainly responsible by the ef-11 tornado. >> [inaudible] >> where did tornado start and travel and stop? >> right now, probably near as i can tell, it was coming down over the turn pieshgs worked its
11:28 am
independence. one the other things you can note -- i will notice back there that terrain goes up. so, that also had fundamentals affect to help bring those stronger winds down. that's why you will see your greatest consent trafgs damage up on top of this hill on alcott and independence. >> [inaudible]. yes. >> [inaudible] stopped? >> basically started on cambridge turn pike. pretty much 1207d on the other side of alcott and independence. basically what happened -- alcott and independence are sitting on top of a knoll, and once you get nast the to lands drops off considerably so basically tornado able get back up at that point instead causing
11:29 am
>> yes. >> and all concord didn't go to any other towns? >> there other isolated tree damage and with a not. i believe some tree damage in marlborough and probably some sore trees but main concentration of damage again damage reports we have had at the weather service and from what i am hearing here is city of an cord >> did could you go to amale? >> no we can't chase down every time we >> allen dunham. meterologist don't ask me to spell it off of the top my head. i am just one. i don't spell it. >> from i what have been told just by number of trees and what not, yes. again it is -- any time you severe weather like we had you can get tree down here and large
11:30 am
the resources to check out every single severe weather report. but when we get concentration on it special splee if we put out tornado warnings we are definitely going to go out and check that out. >> [inaudible] >> i want to get over here first. >> that's my dhash will of up to officials here. and [inaudible] >> [inaudible] that's because the circuit tripped substation and some of those are now back on power they isolated this area where the damage occurred and so many of those residents are power back including the town hall. but --
11:31 am
>> when the break happened trees cut the power. it is tripped circuit. >> current numbers i don't we could probably get that for you. >> some power was restored as we isolated this area. >> can you tem us when neighbors can talking light plant folks they lexington road restored today. it might -- likely longer. it may be tomorrow before the folks on the ridge and independence road get their service restored. >> that's right. >> our town manager. >> [inaudible] so now.
11:32 am
on the spec pixar grass there was question asked specific area of the heavy damage. okay. we are talk the 400 to 500 block of lexington road we are talking independence and alcott. independence road and alcott as well as 400 to 500 block of lexington road. that's where the hea it was more -- there was nor isolated damage like the meterologist was saying, in -- in half of the virginia road some off old when heed ford road. and we just -- we will be wrotening our attention as we can. right now, the project before us is to open up the roads get the elect trying restored and make
11:33 am
you know 20 feet up we have got -- we got trees that are broken and deaning willing. we have got to work on that. [inaudible] >> so the message is clearly if you don't need to go out to your neighborhood, don't do to. clearly. the electricity been shut to the affected areas. in those other two streets. so there not electrical hazard out here right now. but there is a lot of crews working around. and they -- we will be doing -- we will be here for the long haul. so, >> what is this area right back here? is that one. areas you mentioned? >> in lexington road right back here. >> and alcott? >> it is on the other side of that it goes up on the ridge
11:34 am
i think that's part of it. is that that are ridge. a little on outside of it. >> the ridge. the ridge. >> yes >> i don't -- i got our cpw, public works director. i don't know if you want to add anything to this? >> only that we have multiple crews in here both our town crews and contractor we had some very large heavy equipment that will b will clean up all of the large debris on the sides of the roadway. as mark says, there is a lot of hangars out there, tree make gather they may look safe but you need use abundance of caution do not walk under them and treat every line like it is a live line and stay away from it. >> [inaudible] >> i don't have of that information. i can get for you but i don't have that information.
11:35 am
i started in 1983. 34 years. well, not in concorde. i have been to other areas where we have seen similar things. but not in concorde we have had micro burst or two over the years. but you don't have these tornados all of that often. if i may, the fire departments, and dfs has got rehab here. it is hot day we are working our folks hard. they need place to rehab. and, we have got some als and some medical support here that we want to thank the highway department and all of the -- all of the venders and all of the
11:36 am
and dci was also here. and, mena came with their command and control support capability which helps us to have a firm command and firm coordination of this indepth event. so, we are allowed to they come in and they support us. we go in and have a ter -- terrific operation interest right here at our command post mass state police air wing, they have been critical in this and giving us bird's eye view literally. and, national grid we got 50 to 60 personal out in area. [inaudible] >> okay. >> yes.
11:37 am
the tornado warnings before our first call. i had already -- this -- >> what time? so maybe about 3:00. >> and i -- what kurt says about the warning system someone asked how long i have been here. i have been here for 34 years i could tell you warnings systems that we have now we don't have way back when. and, i had already talked to the shift commander and was coordinating when this call came in. so it is really -- it was really pleasure to have jump on the phone. >> alert sound before of the tornado hit? >> the -- yes. warnings for the tornado -- the tornado warnings we were notified of that in path of it. >> you got your first call at 3:17. yes. roughly. yes. >> alert sound -- somewhere in there.
11:38 am
yes. >> absolutely. >> give us some about five minutes we will get someone and bring you up than. >> -- [inaudible] thank you. >> he have confirmed now an ef one tornado touched down in concorde. thankfully, though no injuries been reported but there was lot of damage they said 39 houses were damaged with this tornado >> and as you said no injuries much mover on coming up first at
