damage tonight in concord. crews hard at work here. the national weather service confirming it was an ef 1 tornado that tore through town early this morning. that powerful twister snapping trees with winds up to 100 miles per hour. >> anchor: and many people in the dark tonight due to those power outages. governor charlie baker surveying the damage hours ago. we have team 7 on the ground and in the air tim caputo live in concord with the latest from one of the hardest hit areas. >> reporter: you mentioned people without power. this house running on generator power. they do not expect to have their power restored tonight. this one tree that crashed in their yard a small snippet of what has happened overnight. there are several of them out

damage here after a powerful tornado ripped through overnight. hundreds of trees in concord were snapped like twigs or pulled out of the ground from the 100 mile winds from an ef tornado overnight. >> anybody who doubts the future and precision of mother nature just needs to take a walk along the route that was hit by that storm. >> reporter: the tornado was only on the ground for 30 seconds. it did so little time. >> i find it hard to believe in one minute anything could do what this storm did up there. >> reporter: very little damage to homes. people living here expected the worst when they were woken up by the terrifying swirling winds. the path of destruction is a half a mile long and a quarter mile wide. >> i was surprised not to see more trees in the houses.

houses. >> reporter: downed power lines a thousand homes immediately lost power. this afternoon many had it back. there are dozens of crews chopping up trees. a worker was whipped by an e rant tree branch. he was rushed to the hospital. but the work out here must continue. >> it's not easy work. what you're looking at here is the crane holding a wire. at the bottom of the wire there is a that were damaged overnight. folks in this area had a 15, 20 minutes heads up that it was coming your way. an alarm that goes off on your cell phone. a lot of folks got that alarm in the middle of the night last night. latest from concord tim caputo 7 news. >> anchor: you've seen those trees scattered around town.

problems. trying to get electricity up and running for everyone in town. meanwhile neighbors are picking up the pieces in the after math of this tornado. officials say dozens of homes suffered damage. amaka ubaka live in concord with more team 7 coverage. >> reporter: well, nick, we're here at alcot and independence. the damage is all around me. you see behind me that utility crews are working to get power they will be here throughout the night. at the same time tree companies are working over time cutting trees and making sure that the roads stay clear. it will be a long night ahead as crews and the neighborhood works to return to normal. neighbors deal with the aftermath of the tornado that ripped through here early this morning. utility crews and tree trimming services working over time to clear the roads and downed trees

>> trees falling behind houses. >> destroyed my wife's furniture. >> reporter: gary describes the moment the tornado hit. >> all of a sudden the house started rattling and shaking. and then the trees started coming down. you could hear them. >> reporter: what used to be a back yard covered in trees. about a thousand homes lost power after the tornado hit. and while some regained power many have not. even though the clean up from over burlam considers himself and neighbors to be lucky. >> it's funny how it swirled around the house and didn't touch a thing. >> reporter: now you could see that huge -- the trunk of the tree right there as crews are working to restore power in the area. crews will be working for several days to clean up this damage. neighbors tell me in this area they're supposed to get their power turned on tomorrow.

all this damage. and we'll have the latest for you tonight at 10 and 11. amaka ubaka 7 news. >> anchor: and sky 7 hd giving us a bird's eye view after tree tops are blown away. 7's jonathan hall got a first hand look from the sky from the damage done by this wild weather. >> reporter: as twisters go this could have been a lot worse. don't tell that to concord. and on nearby lexington road. dozens of homes damaged including a large estate which appears to have suffered structural damage. men retrieved debris including a lounge chair by the water. lazy days by the pool done for now. a crane was brought to pick up and remove trees from the streets. tree removal companies armed

chippers have work cut out for them. the twisters 100 mile an hour winds kicked up. the violent storm downed power lines and utility poles and crews using cranes to replace them. a summer that the people of concord will remember for a long long time. jonathan hall 7 news. >> anchor: so this tornado it was moving through during the early morning hours while people >> anchor: the storm's wind speeds packed a serious punch. jeremy reiner here with a closer look at ef 1 right jeremy. >> reporter: the scale goes from ef 0 to ef 5. in new england we are talking the weaker end of the scale. ov june first, 2011 in the brimfield area that was an ef3.

deaths. it occurred at 3:10 in the morning. our first overnight tornado in massachusetts since 1970. take you back 2:52 in marlboro. there was rotation on the doppler radar. this time the weather service issued the tornado warning. which was fantastic lead time. sometimes we use the moniker hit without warning. not this situation. this was when the warning was issued. there's concord moved up across concord about 3:15, 3:20. on the ground for about 10 minutes. the most significant damage focussed here in the city of concord. thankfully it weakened from there. powerful cold front that's why we had the tornado. it did it's work. the air is refreshing dry and breezy. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. ; jr, thanks.

feeling violated after a man is arrested and accused of secretly recording them in the bathroom. ramond mckinon pleaded not guilty in a quincy courtroom on charges he used a camera pen to record the life guards in the bathroom. >> a life guard identified herself as a state trooper. going to a bathroom in a staff bathroom she noticed a light. mckinon posted $10,000 cash bail. police continued to investigate there. a lynn man in court on a third oui charge. robert hario is also charged with interfering with a police officer. the crash happened at boston and broad way streets in lynn saturday. traffic was impacted. the crash knocked out power to a

>> anchor: a nun robs in quincy. someone ran up to her pulled out a knife and demanded cash. 7's kimberly bookman live outside in quincy where she spoke to the mother of convent. >> the victim didn't look your traditional nun. she wasn't whairing a habit. she was in exercise clothes when she says she was 26 year old vanessa young of somerville came up to her on 5th street and tried to grab a satchel she had in her left hand. the nun told the suspect she didn't have any money. all she had were rosary beads, a key and a small momento. she noticed another woman now idded as vanessa wife crystal young. she was standing behind the suspect doing look out.

and the mother of the convent said taking that symbol of faith was a blessing. >> i believe it was the grace of the rosary that saved both of them. saved our sister's life and also saved this young woman not to pursue further action or do anything bad that will affect her future. >> reporter: now the nun reported all of this to police. they found the 2 suspects a short time later. they were they searched that vehicle and found 3 stolen phones as well as a small knife. kimberly bookman 7 news. >> anchor: striking a deal with win resorts dropping an appeal against the company. mayor says it's because they resolved many of the community's concerns. the appeal was never meant to stop the cas eastboundo. the appeal did cause major
