off the field after a nasty injury. with temps like these, summer rolls on. turning up the heat and humidity for the end of the week. boston police officers cleared in a deadly shooting. the district attorney saying they were forced to fire. but the victim's family says it was the wrong decision. also, signs of hope after a deadly disaster in italy. search teams rushing to find survivors. a hack attack against an snl star. >> hackers target leslie jones and take over her website. 7 n first at 11, there's breaking news in new bedford. a 15-year-old stabbed to death. two others injured. right now we know that police are still on the scene and right now they're looking for any sort of evidence. they're processing the scene, gathering everything they can. a lot of officers on that scene. still very fresh. we're trying to get details sorted out here. >> anchor: that's correct. kimberly bookman live on the

>> reporter: what we know is that three teens were stabbed here in their own new bedford neighborhood. police telling us that a 15-year-old boy tried to run home for help but collapsed near his home and died. now this all began when a group fight broke out right before 6:30 this evening. police were called to the area of middle and chancery streets. the temp landing housing projects. they found the 15-year-old dead. they also found a 22-year-old man with life threatening injuries and 16-year-old boy the 15-year-old was treated at st. lukes and has been released. the 22-year-old was transferred from st. lukes to rhode island hospital and is expected to be okay. right now police are not releasing the name of that 15-year-old victim. they are still trying to notify his family. as you said, this is a very active investigation at this time. there is no motive that's been revealed. no arrests made. but police say there is surveillance video from the area and they are reviewing that and they are hoping to have more information very soon. for now reporting live in new

7 news >> announcer: on seven, sparking trouble. >> it was disturbing. i do think it is a hate crime >> announcer: downtown salem rocked by a big blast. >> anchor: salem police looking for seven people involved in a newspaper box explosion. >> tonight officers say this is likely a hate crime because the box longed to an lgbt 911. brandon gunnoe live in salem with the story. brandon? >> reporter: jadian crime. the inside of this newspaper box burned to a crisp. the co-owner of the newspaper said that up to a dozen of their newspaper boxes have been targeted. this summer here in salem. police say the explosion rocked the downtown area of salem, mass and could be heard up to a mile away. >> at first it was very shocking to me. i literally gasped. and i covered my mouth. >> reporter: investigators say early tuesday morning a group of seven people placed an explosive

newspaper box in salems square. new england's largest lgbt newspaper. detectives are treating it as a hate crime. >> i do think it is a hate crime definitely. the police have also agreed with us on that. it was very deliberate when you watch the video they were really streamlining. >> makes me sad to think there's still people out there that have enough hatred to blowup a newspaper box. >> reporter: the co-owner of the paper said in the past few months as many as a dozen rainbow times newspaper boxes haveee salem. that's why they made sure to have them in few of a traffic camera but said it's never been anything like this. >> we have amazing support here in salem. this was not the location that we ever expected this to happen. >> reporter: despite being target, owners of the lgbt newspaper have no plans of removing any boxes. >> our whole team has really said enough is enough here in salem, you know, you'll hear a lot of people say love always trumps hate. >> reporter: and police say

trump hate. if you recognize any of the people in the video you are asked to give them a call. live in salem, mass, brandon gunnoe, 7 news night team. we have break news surrounding the red sox. the rookie phenom injured and in a lot of pain. alex has an update. >> two nights after he made what might be the catch of the season andrew's 2016 could be on hold. the rookie outfielder leaving in the 7th with a knee. it happened after he sliced a double the other way but got tagged out of part of pedroia's double-play ball. he rolls awkwardly over his left leg and went down in a heap. right now the team is calling in it a sprained left knee and says he will have it evaluated tomorrow. a tough blow for the 22-year-old who is hitting .324 since joining the big club and gave the sox a big spark in left field.

now from the night team, taking a dive but staying alive. >> the only place i had where i could go was the water >> announcer: a pilot in too deep makes a great escape. >> tonight the helicopter is out of the water and it's in one piece too. the pilot you see there also safe saying his experience and practice prepared him for the worst-case scenario. john cocoa is live -- john is live in ashland. the pilot says he only had one place to go. right here into the water. crews pulling an ultra-light helicopter out of the reservoir in ashland state park. the aircraft crashed here at around 4:30 on wednesday. the pilot, 48-year-old david diana of hopkinton says he had an engine problem. >> there was no place to go. i just wanted to get over the trees. >> reporter: despite falling from 1500 feet he wasn't hurt.

ditch the 45,000 helicopter in the water. >> generally if there was a field we have been fine. >> someone was able to help him out and brought him to shore with a boat that was in the water. >> reporter: ashland police say diana took more from marlboro before the crash. the aircraft was carrying less than five gallons of fuel so there's no risk to the environment. >> we found out almost immediately he was the sole occupant. >> reporter: this is the view inside diana's chopper from a previous flight. it gives you a glimpse of diana says he practices for this kind of situation all the time. >> you are always flying around looking for places where if you have a problem you know how to put it down. >> reporter: now this is where that helicopter was pulled out. it's been taken away now. again, that pilot is safe and he wasn't injured. live in ashland, john cocoa, 7 news night team. a boston police officer and

the district attorney's office says they were forced to fire when a man with suspected terroristic ties lunged them with a knife. tim caputo is live in roslyndale. >> this is the parking lot where the deadly encounter happened between the terror suspect and police officers. now more than a year later, the d.a. coming out saying police were justified in opening fire. but the suspect's family says there's probably more the police could have done. new surveillance video released by the suffolk county entering a roslindale cvs one morning last summer. that string from his pants is connected to the knife police say he later pulled on law enforcement. today following an extensive investigation the d.a. said officers were justified when they shot and killed rahim as he confronted police. >> mr. rahim continued to advance on the officers. refused to drop his weapon and responded by saying you drop yours and why don't you shoot me.

tapped his phone and allegedly heard him say he was head out to state to kill someone and he got orders from a known member of isis. >> mr. rahim abandoned the plan to travel to new york city and instead plan attack police officers in boston. >> reporter: police approached him in the parking lot. >> eyewitnesses describe the approach as casual rather than confrontational. >> reporter: but attorneys with rahim's family says that many officers with guns could have us considering rahim was only holding a knife. >> couldn't they have deescalated that situation. >> reporter: the d.a. says the officers tried. >> they attempted to de-escalate the situation by retreating 50 feet. >> reporter: the family's attorney call this an illegal arrest. >> if they had enough information to justify an arrest they could have gotten a warrant. >> reporter: the d.a. said because of the imminent threat it didn't require a warrant. >> there is no question the members of the joint terrorism

how many people are missing because of the thousands of vacationers in the area this time of year. in the center of a broken town bodies in the rubble. rescuers desperate to save lives. and am atree cha was hit hardest by a quake that struck while many people were asleep. this clock frozen at 3:38 a.m. >> it's like a bomb fell on it. there's nothing there anymore. >> reporter: one of -- italy's jewels leveled. this is the town before and after. body after body pulled from debris as stunned survivors fear the worst. but moments of hope too. this young girl freed from danger in another town. the bryant university basketball team in italy for a series of games felt the quake from 75 miles away. >> i jumped out, jumped up and tried to look out the window and look outside and see what was going on and get a feel for it. lasted about 35 seconds.

so was able to, you know, figure out that it was an earthquake. >> reporter: coach chris burns says everyone with the rhode island based team is safe. but now with images of the devastation pouring in, basketball is the last thing they're worried about. >> terrible what happened to those people. in the north and smaller villages but we're lucky enough to be safe. >> reporter: the rescue efforts complex. an 80-year-old woman spotted through a small gap in a collapsed building. her daughter killed. a rescuer saying stay calm. buildings, broken people, and a rising death toll. the last major earthquake in that region killed 300 people and turned am atee tray into a ghost town. wild weather hitting central indiana. rain hail and tornados swept through. the video shows a tornado touching down in kokomo today. tonight there's still a threat for more thunderstorms and possibly tornados.

looking at -- toppled over. you can see the storm outside of the window of the restaurant across the street. that was before the building just completely collapses. crews working to clear the damage from this flattened restaurant or coffee shop. other buildings all over the state. forecasters say that severe weather could continue next several days. the night team in medford where a driver ends up in deep water trying to pick up a jet ski. officials say the driver backed up too far and his car slid the water sink down. crews were able to pull it back to shore. a bill signed into law at the statehouse today aimed at protecting pets. governor baker signing the bill with a crowd of animal lovers. the new bill allows first responders or even you, private citizens, to forcibly enter a car to release an animal that may be in dangerously hot or cold conditions. the governor says it is an important step for animal safety. fast forward to tomorrow where donald trump heads to new

leslie jones finding strong support after a major hack attack today. someone took down her personal website and replaced it with nude pictures of the comedienne. >> anchor: the site had some of her personal information lists. it's not the first time she has been targeted online. after appearing at the olympics in rio leslie jones took down her website a her home page littered with what appeared to be nude photos of the comedienne and unconfirmed pictures of her driver's license and passport. this is just the latest episode in a series of disturbing cyber attacks against jones. last month her twitter account was flooded with hateful racist tweets. one compared jones to harambe the gorilla with a tweet saying... i know you only wanted to protect that kid. jones a cast member of snl and

night television. >> i am used to the insults. >> reporter: she also tweeted... it's so sad most of these comments sound like they're from ignorant children. >> it appears she was attacked at least in some respects because she is a black woman. and she's a public figure. she is vocal. >> reporter: katy perry with 92 million followers tweeted... hashtag #i stand with leslie. quest love wrote... these acts against leslie ugly attacks that leslie jones is once again facing head on. as more celebrities continue to tweet in support of jones she has remained silent on social media. u.s. olympian jimmy feigen . apologizing for his role in vandalizing a rio bathroom and lying about it. he says he is sorry for the, quote, serious distraction he and his teammates caused. the saga started after ryan lochte lied to nbc about getting robbed at gunpoint by police.

a gas station after a night of drinking. feigen admitted to initially keeping information from authorities to protect his teammates. he says he paid a nearly $11,000 fine to get his passport back so he could then return to the united states. part of a statement he released he says i am sorry for the drama this has caused in everyone's lives. i'm thankful to be home in the united states with my family and that this ordeal has come to an end. another u.s. olympian is in trouble for her actions in rio. u.s. women's soccer goalie hope solo suspend suspension for, quote, conduct that is counter to the organization's principals. solo called the swedish soccer team cowards after the heavily favored u.s. team lost to them in rio. now seven weather with meteorologist bri eggers. >> another week of meteorological summer ahead of us. june, july and august. we have a week left in the month of august. boy, we had one of summer's best days today with temperatures topping out in the mid to upper

but still extreme drought conditions. that drought monitor will be updated tomorrow. so make sure you tune in to today in new england. chris lambert will have the latest for you. we are 3.92 inches of precip. that's how much we've seen since june 1st. so, again, four meteorological summer. quite a bit in the deficit. just for this season. now that 3.92 is a number i want you to keep in mind here. because the number one driest summer on record, 3.97 inches. a chance for isolated showers and storms. if any of those showers or storms make night the boston area, specifically boston logan, and we pick up .05 of rainfall we'll not make it to the driest summer on record but we still have a run at it and know dry weather usually means more dry weather. looks like it will be dry again tomorrow. but we start to increase the humidity. so those dew points going up. risk factor becoming a factor.

storms as we make it into overnight tomorrow, friday afternoon and evening as well. looking through the timeline. we start out with sunshine. clouds start to increase as the day goes on. into the overnight hours it's about a ten to 20 percent chance that we get some of those isolated showers. i think your best chance will be in central, northern new england. in to friday a better chance for those showers and storms to make night the eastern half of the commonwealth. these are hit and miss. that's what isolated means. the next town over sees nothing. i don't anticipate any of those storms getting out of hand and becoming severe as p. c. has us under general thunderstorms expected for friday. we'll continue to watch it. current temperatures in the 70s. 75 boston. not cooling off a whole lot tonight because of the creeping up of those dew points. dew points usually act as tleb holds for how low the temperatures drop overnight. lows 60s tonight. not that feel of fall we had
