we know that more is on the way. hurricane hermine slammed into the florida panhandle overnight. bringing with it powerful winds, 80 miles an hour. gusts even stronger. >> yeah. we are going to lose the power line here. >> reporter: the first storm to make landfall in florida in 11 years. definitely leaving a mark. >> just because it is clear outside does not mean it's safe. >> reporter: snapping trees, crushing cars and homes, and knocking power out to tens of thousands. water pounding the coastline and surging inland. leaving behind devastation. crews in cedar key are assessing the damage this morning. cinder block walls and this dock couldn't withstand the thrashing. hermine has dropped to tropical storm status and is heading up the east coast. parts of georgia and the carolinas under a state of emergency. >> we expect tropical storm-force winds between 30-40 miles per hour, sustained. >> reporter: preparations

preventing excessive damage there. >> we want everyone to please be safe. >> reporter: officials warning beach-goers that dangerous rip currents are expected throughout the holiday weekend. surfers along the coast, though, taking advantage of the changing conditions ahead of the storm. yes. certainly, nothing to play with, though. you can see a few people here have come out and try to assess the situation as we get a break in the conditions here. it is a wit deceptive. we are in between bands here. we are going to see more rain maybe. 10-12 inches. wind gusts, 40-45 miles an hour. that is the latest on conditions here in savannah, georgia. i'm jay gray, 7 news. >> sarah: thanks, jay. the concern now is how it will impact us here in new england, of course. >> christa: bri, sounds like we are going to see some rain. >> bri: much-needed rain. we need the rain. we could hope for more.

now, the center of this storm west of savannah where jay gray was. you can see it spinning its wheels. but look at the reach of the storm system at this point. sending that heavier thunderstorm activity, stronger winds, and heavier rainfall into southern carolina. south carolina. into north carolina as well. even drawing more tropical storm into the central part of florida at this point. now, this is the current status of tropical storm hermine. 50-mile-per-hour winds. to florida. 80-mile-per-hour winds at that point. we are going to continue to follow this track. this is the official forecast track from the national hurricane center. you can see it heading through the carolinas. and just offshore, in north carolina, still as a tropical storm. but the latest update says that there is the potential that this storm could actually briefly restrengthen into a category one hurricane: as it gets over the warm ocean waters once again. then it just kind of stalls out here off the coast of the

charged with two counts of rape and two counts of indecent sexual assault. police say if brockton man picked up the young woman in boston after she requested an uber ride and the attack occurred sometime wednesday morning. according to detectives, vedrine, when questioned by police, said the victim was extremely drunk when he picked her up to drive her home. the uber driver went on to admit to having sexual intercourse with the victim but stated it was consensual. dr of uber drivers in the area. including this man, paul griffin. he was arraigned in malden district court earlier this week on charges of gross lewdness. recent incidents with uber drivers have prompted the mayor of everett to demand a meeting with the c.e.o. of uber. to discuss their screening process for hiring drivers. in the case of vedrine, uber released a statement late this morning saying "we are fully cooperating with boston police and will continue to work closely with them to help

in this case." so vedvin set to face a judge here in dorchester district court. any time now. on those multiple charges here. boston police say their investigation is ongoing. right now, they can't say for certain whether or not there are any other victims here. we are live in dorchester this afternoon, steve cooper, 7 news. >> sarah: some breaking news. a 20-year-old acushnet woman is facing charges. police say she left a young child alone police say a video was posted on facebook, if showing that woman leaving the child at a car, at a gas station while she went inside in new bedford. police say the car was unlocked. it was running at the time while she went inside the gas station. the department of child and family services are investigating. >> christa: the new hampshire attorney general's office investigating a suspicious

several law enforcement agencies are working with the attorney general's office in that investigation. police in somerville trying to figure out who set a truck on fire overnight. you can see the damage to that truck here in a bit. and a motorcycle. the fire chief says a molotov cocktail was found in that area as well. right now, they are reviewing surveillance footage in hopes of identifying a suspect. >> sarah: a deadly drive in milford. a track or the-trailer hate woman while she was crossing the street. it happened yesterday afternoon. investigators surveillance photos of the truck. eventually, that driver turned himself in. officials say the victim was leaving the bank when she was hit. family and friends are now mourning her death. they say clement was a constable in town and was well-known. >> she loved everybody. she didn't care. and she would help you no matter what happened. even that rough, tough exterior that she had. when people really got to know her and she's got a lot of relatives in the area that

driver has not been charged. police are trying to figure out if he even knew he hit someone. >> christa: a dangerous distraction for pilots here in massachusetts. three reports of planes getting targeted by lasers. sources tell 7 news that two of the pilots were actually hurt while flying near logan airport because of. that now the f.a.a. is investigating. here is jennifer eagan with more. >> reporter: three planes flying over massachusetts hit with a green laser. all within minutes of each other. it happened wednesday night the first case, a hawker 25 aircraft as it cruised over north adams in the western part of the state. 24 minutes after that, forecast at 9:17, an american airlines flight on approach to logan, reported a laser lit up the windshield ten miles northeast of the airport. two minutes later, another plane passing over the same spot, this one, a delta flight,

vehicle" after he expressed doubt of taking his own life. roy was found dead inside his car from carbon monoxide poisoning. defense lawyers suggest the antidepressant medication roy had been taking could have led to his death. claiming suicidal thoughts are a side effect of the drug. >> as we allege and is proven in our document, he had just started tweaking or changing this medication. shortly before he took his own life. that show that he needs to be closely, closely monitored whenever you change that medication, the dosage or just start on it. because there is a high rate of suicides. >> reporter: the judge will also now allow the defense to get police records from years past that show that roy had witnessed domestic violence between his parents. the defense is arguing that seeing that violence in his

>> bri: yeah, absolutely. delays and sarah. this is where that storm is at this point. tropical storm hermine. earlier this morning, when it made landfall. on the gulf coast of florida, it was a category one hurricane. but we have since seen the winds die down. nevertheless. a lot of thunderstorm activity as well as heavy rain and very strong winds. as you can see. throughout the southeastern united states. stretching up through north carolina at this point. and that is even far from the center of this storm. 50-mile-per-hour sustained max winds at this point. and tracking to the northeast at 18 miles per hour. we expect this storm, this is the official forecast from the national hurricane center, to move off the coast of north carolina by the time we hit tomorrow afternoon and evening. and there is a possibility that once it gets over the water, which is the fuel for these storms, the gas that makes the car go, there is a possibility that it could restrengthen enough to make it

then sort of just meander south of new england as we head into the beginning of next week. and yes, this is correct. forecast not a typo. we could still be talking about this into the middle, even the end of next week. and here is why. we have a high pressure center that is going to center itself in northern new england. and as it does, it acts as a block for that storm. and just kind of keeps it in place there. to the south of the south coast of new england. we are going to be talking about this into the beginning of next week. watches or warnings here in new england. you can see 30 million people will be watching out for tropical storm warning here in red. and then the pink area, tropical storm watch. as we head into this big labor day weekend. what does this mean for us? the big question now is how far north does the center of the storm make it? how close does it get to southern new england? and will it be able to give us those strong winds and the rain that we so desperately need. well, here is the timeline with the wind gusts.

the time we head into sunday. and it continues into monday as well. this does kind of act as what we know of as a nor'easter. it is also going to really stir up the ocean as well. so rip currents, high swells, and even the risk for some minor erosion. and even some minor coastal flooding. the good news with this is that at this point in time, our astronomical tides will get lower and lower. hopefully, the two of those can kind of balance each other out. gorgeous weather to be had. it is the literal calm before the storm. as we continue to track hermine. current temperatures in the low to mid-70's. we get to enjoy this for the rest of the afternoon. as well as the dry air that is in place. dew points in the mid to upper 50's. with partly cloudy skies. there is a slight chance that we get a 10% chance, we will say, or even less, that we get a spot shower heading into this afternoon. the rest of us, really most of us stay dry. here is a look at our forecast.

turner could have spent 14 years behind bars. the judge's lee yen si has caused outrage. >> i'm a mother, and i believe that anybody who is convicted of rape should go to state prison. not receive county jail time. and in fact, that's why i'm is up poring the legislation that will make it mandatory prison sentence for someone who raped someone who is unconscious and intoxicated. report@bill was passed this week which would require courts to punish those convicted of sex as if the victim were conscious. it is now on the governor's desk. there is also a campaign to recall the judge that is gaining momentum. they will need 80,000 signatures to get on the november ballot of next year. if the campaign isn't successful, the judge will continue sitting on the bench for another 7 years. >> 2023 is simply unacceptable. he is biased. he doesn't understand sex crimes or violence against women. he doesn't take these felonies seriously. he treats them like

that should be interesting. i don't know. >> bri: i think he stays way past that curfew extension. way past your bedtime, for sure. still tracking tropical storm hermine. a whole lot of rain and wind in the southeastern u.s. you can see how far-reaching this storm is. even sending a pretty significant rain band through the central part of florida. at this point. the show is not over yet. it looks like it could be for georgia. we could see more action as we get into this afternoon. here is that track. it is issued by the national hurricane center. taking it through south carolina, north carolina. coastal communities. and then coming off land, out into the ocean. the outer banks, probably by tomorrow, later in the evening. and you know, new forecast details... it is giving us an idea that there is a chance, once it gets over water, which is the

to hurricane status. category one hurricane: then it just kind of gets stuck here. you look at. this monday, tuesday, wednesday. this is not a typo. we will be talking about the remnants of hermine for days to come. already, more than 30 million people preparing for the effects of hermine. the tropical storm warning you see here in red, and the pinkish-peachish color, that is a tropical storm watch. that comes up along the south coast of connecticut. preparing for some very strong winds and erosion. could be in the cards for southern new england. blocking high pressure keeps that storm in place. but just to the south of new england. so this becomes a big question do. we get some of these rain bands in here? we do know that the winds will very likely increase. we will get some rough surever. rip currents as well. something to pay attention to. it is not necessarily a beach forecast for the weekend. something we will be watching very closely. to give you those detailed,

winds increase on sunday. looks like the showers and rain hold off until monday. strongest winds for cape and the islands. this kind of acts as a nor'easter for us. then into the lakes region, the mountains, if you are headed up north, not all that bad. some clouds thrown in your direction. you could stay out of the strongest wind and the better rainfall as well. looking at the wind timeline here. we see the winds pick up, as i mentioned, sunday: continuing into monday. could be gusting between 40-50 miles per hour. not out of the question f we will enjoy the next two days. we have some very tranquil beautiful weather in store for us. very seasonable for this time of year. mid to upper 7's for highs. again, as i mentioned, probably talking about defects of hermine as we head into the middle of next week. we will keep you posted. >> christa: coming up, the perfect treat for any holiday barbecue.

you hear sirens and your child crying. this driver was not some evil person. he was doing what we all do. we all have days where we are in a hurry. >> reporter: 24 hours later, in the same city, another driver hits a student. this time, the bus lights are flashing. the bus driver was laying on the horn. >> that is how i remember it. >> reporter: michael was in his car stopped behind the bus. and saw the whole thing. >> my heart was racing. and he got knocked, i think, ten feet towards my car. he rolled to the driver's side window. >> a 16-year-old was behind the wheel. >> she came out of the car crying. she thought she killed him. i tried to reassure her. he seemed okay at the time.
