hermine's impact. we'll get to dylan's forecast in a moment. first, nbc's gabe gutierrez is on the east end of long island. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. hermine is meandering off the east coast and this area is under a tropical storm warning. not expecting rain but strong winds and rip currents keeping people out of the water on this labor day. after slogging through the south and the mid-atlantic, this morning hermine is the northeast coast kicking up dangerous waves and rip currents. >> the pace of the storm is even slower than they predicted so we can imagine that some of these effects will last now through wednesday. >> reporter: long island under threat of storm surges. this the view from the cruise ship "anthem of the seas." from new jersey to delaware to maryland, the dangerous conditions keeping swimmers out of the water even with sunny skies sunday.

it's definitely not a day to go swimming. >> reporter: in ocean city after saturday's washout, the financial hit already stinging on this labor day. ice cream shop owner estimates hermine cost him 80% of his weekend business. >> it's our last chance where we get the crowds before school starts so it's a big deal. you can't fight mother na by weekend flooding and after hermine made landfall in florida friday, authorities there are still surveying the damage as the storm's torrential rain led to swollen rivers and new flooding sunday. hermine's aftermath not over. at least two deaths have been blamed on the storm. one in florida. the other in north carolina over the weekend. again, other communities today are bracing for the possibility of more flooding.

gabe gutierrez on the east end this morning. dylan is in forral and has more on hermine and what to expect. >> a lot of people in the northeast did see sunshine this weekend. the storm is over the atlantic and it's just a coastal impact from here on out. you can see how far away the storm is. some of these clouds trying to make their way especially into southern new england. the storm itself has winds up near 70 miles per hour. with it sitting here, the mo and closer to nantucket and waves themselves are trying to get pushed onshore. that's why we do still have the threat of rip currents and also that storm surge. the storm will most likely go a little farther to the west and then eventually take a turn to the northeast by the time we get into wednesday weakening slightly as it does so. because of the coastal impacts we do still have tropical storm warnings across central and eastern long. the same goes for southern connecticut into rhode island and parts of southeastern massachusetts as well.

about one to two feet above high tide leading to minor coastal flooding. we could see that three-foot storm surge. minor to perhaps moderate coastal flooding and lots of beach erosion which we've seen already. as for winds, most of our windiest conditions will be across eastern long, cape cod and nantucket with gusts up to 35 miles an hour. rain is not really the i we're just looking at perhaps an inch and a half of rain across nantucket because they're closer to the center of the storm. it's really just the water impact. rip currents up and down the east coast still an issue. >> keep an eye on that, dylan. thanks so much. with the election just two months away, labor day marks the start of the final push in the presidential race. nbc's kristen welker is on the campaign trail in cleveland. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. hillary clinton will return to

are in season, we are using them every way possible. i've got to tell you, this is my favorite recipe. >> i never had tomato pie. >> honey, you're life will be changed after this segment. we'll start with homemade crust. it's five ingredients. >> when you tell me homemade crust, it doesn't sound fast. >> it's scary but the deal is you can't get out of the parking lot at the supermarket to your premade pie crust in the time that it's going take to you make this. so what we're going to do, one of the things we always want to make sure is we're going to mix butter and flour in here together really well. now, because you're so hot because you know you are, you don't want to overmix that butter in because you'll lose your pretty layers so you literally stick your fingers in the ice water for a few minutes. get them really cold and then work it in so that it doesn't overwork it. >> do you use room temperature

you want your hands to be cold because i don't want them to melt it. >> i'll do that a little bit. >> this is great trick. once you have your dough all rolled out and absolutely beautiful, it's give to move interest from here to here. we're going to roll it onto the rolling pin. look at there. then we'll roll it back out. >> that's beautiful. so we'll press it down just a little bit. it's bigger than our pan which is not a big deal. >> is that what you want? we'll come around and cut. you could tear it. not a big deal. this is crimping. this is not one of my favorite things is crimping the crust. it's a simple technique. work on that. this is going to be your big fun thing for the whole day. >> this is where a child in the house comes in handy.
