>> anchor: first at 0 clock, we are tracking hermine. the storm is here with wind and rain, now hitting new england. you are taking a live look from westport right now. this is horseneck beach on buzz artary's bay. here is a look at what it looks like in orleans as nauset beach on the cape. that area along with the islands are getting the worst of it as we speak. we're still tracking the tt seas. >> anchor: this with a tropical storm warning still in effect. we have team 7 coverage of the storm system. let's check in with jerk he reiner with the store's path. >> reporter: still considered a powerful storm, again post tropical storm hermine with winds at 70 miles per hour, drifting west northwest at about 7 miles per hour, the thinking from the hurricane center is she will continue on that northwesterly track overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow but weakening.
6:01 pm
from there we'll then move not east moving over to nantucket probably some time very early thursday morning but the height of hermine, the most powerful as pet of the storm is happening right now across southern new england. we do an aadvertise patriot further weakening through the day tomorrow. we have the tropical storm warning in effect for the remainder of this evening meaning winds are likely to be up near 40 miles per hour and hyannis right now again winds around 33 miles per hour, gusting 43 miles per hour in the vineyard as well as nantucket a gust of 46 even north and south shore winds gusting around 30 miles per hour. the peak wind gust so far today, martha's vineyard and nantucket both coming in close to 60 mile-per-hour gusts. this was earlier this afternoon. marstons mills 48 "people" mile-per-hour gusts, sandwiches gusting to 43 and this will be the case up until say 11:00 tonight with winds gusting to 30 to occasionally 40 miles per hour. cape ann, south shore, the south coast and cape winds may gust between 45 and 50 miles per hour
6:02 pm
in the terms of rain we've seen rain bands march in from the ocean but as they move farther inland they are encountering dry air and dry air chews up this beneficial rain so you will have a little more rain on cape and islands this evening then it all winds down overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. >> anchor: strong winds and dangerously high waves closing multiple beaches to swimmers today. like you can see this surf here do you remembering what is typically one of the busiest weekends of the year. kimberly book man live in orleans with a look at some of the conditions there >> reporter: we are live here on nauset beach where you can see behind me the police tape. they have roped off this area, no swimming allowed. no people allowed on the beach and this is why. take a look at the water behind me. the wind absolutely churning it. the waves huge. there are big rip current and lifeguards out here as well as the what bore master say it simply is unsafe to be here.. tractors roll on to nauset beach to pick up and remove every
6:03 pm
high winds down blow them away. the gusts so strong, storm chaser jerk lynn gray say they shake you down. you can still stand up but the phone said keep the phone still while taking pictures. that was not too easy spot storm blowing sand on to every bystanders coming to see and document its effects. it's really windy. you get sandblasted for sure of i feel like those grits of needles in your face and everything. >> anchor: mid afternoon waves hit heights of 8 feet rip current so dangerous they closed the beach and peel are warninged to stay out of the water. the lifeguard said the high tide was coming in and so that we needed to come in off the beach. they wouldn't let us stay any more so they taped it all off support liens harbormaster expected major beach erosion. we're losing sand built up over the summer. >> anchor: then there is the rain coming down in burst the. the wind knocking it sideways soaking everyone. wet sand i forgot what sand tasted like.
6:04 pm
arms out and mother nature is furry. >> reporter: become out live now i can tell you we've seen all kinds of elements out here today from the heavy rain to the wind all of the sand really picking up with the wind. take a look over here at this bench and you can just see how it's taking on. this is where all of the wind is going and it's sticking. at this point, the rain has stopped but the wind just feels like it's churning, churning, churning. very difficult to be standing in it. you can see the wind kind of slapping me in the face, all of the people advised to stay away. reporting live from orleans, kimberly book man, 7 news. >> anchor: let's continue team 7 coverage of the storm get a taste of what it looks like somewhere else. hopefully brandon gunnoe is not eating sand but live at horseneck beach in westport. >> reporter: i'm not eating any sand but winds have picked up and we're occasionally feeling some rain of i was talking to jr earlier and he said the way the storm is actually going to hit where i'm standing right now is more like a nor'easter so coastal flooding

these waves and send them out further into the ocean. he said we're going to have heavy bands of wind and rain so at times it will calm down only to ramp back up again with wind gusts at times up to 50 miles per hour. high surf and heavy winds, the warnings were up but it didn't stop people from coming to check out the waves and mother nature. we were just expecting building swells throughout the day. probable anywhere from four to six feet, maybe a little bigger occasionally. we've closed the water to today. high winds on the beach sent towels, hats and bags flying and blowing sand covered the walkways as you heard lifeguards closed the water to swimming and surfing but we found at least two guys changing their chances. anybody we've seen in the water today as face as i know is one gentleman we kindly asked to get out. we had everybody just watch from the beach today. fishing boats are tied to the docks with 12 foot seas higher expected offshore. they are not taking any chances.
6:06 pm
that's about it. we're pretty protected from northeast wind around here. >> reporter: we saw a couple flying a kite that looks like the new r 2 but getting in the water is not. swells on top of waves are from storms offshore such such as this one, not the winds on shor. it's gusting up to 40, 50 miles per hour at times down here. that makes it a little bit more treacherous even for the surfing as well. it's not easy to pull into waves and obviously if you are out behind the breakers this wind sh further and further away from the beach it's you can get yourself into a tough situation. >> reporter: again wind gusts expected anywhere from 40 to 50 miles per hour, maybe even more. that's all the way up until midnight when it should begin to taper off a little more after that but right now at this hour the winds and occasionally some rain are starting to pick up. live on horseneck beach in westport, brandon gunnoe, 7 new. >> anchor: be sure to stay with 7 news as we track this storm. you can get the forecast any

on-line and our 7 news app. >> anchor: following breaking news. boston police say they fund a device similar it a molotov cocktail on an officer's lawn officer the weekend. now they are working to figure out if this was random or someone targeted the officer. 7's nick emons live with the breaking details. >> reporter: yeah, kim, you know, as you can imagine this is a concern for the department given everything that's happened around the country in dallas and baton rouge so what we know, what we have been told is that this officer walked outside of their morning on sunday and found that molotov cocktail like device right there on their lawn. the big concern now is if this officer or this officer's home was targeted. police say that an arson investigators are looking into what happened. they are trying to figure out if this was some kind of a random act or if this officer was targeted. the investigation is ongoing as of right now police are just hoping anyone with information will call them. that's the latest outside of

nick emons, 7 news. >> anchor: a 7-year-old boy killed in a fire in rhode island. that boy and two teen-age sisters were rushed to the hospital during the overnight fire in any el town, rhode island. this fire broke out on east main road early this morning. all three victims were taken to has borough children's hospital where the young boy was pronounced dead. the children's parents were not home at the time of the fire. >> anchor: now it a developing story. crews battling a massive fire at a halifax home. look at those flames on that black smoke. all shooting out of the roof, 7's tim caputo live in halifax with more. you can see behind me fire fighters are still here at this point. the fire is out but they ran into problems, especially when you see how long that driveway is behind me to getting water to that house. huge flames shoot out the roof of a home in halifax. the fire started around 1:00 this afternoon at a known set a few hundred dread feet off thompson street. the house being so far back in the woods made it difficult for
6:09 pm
it's a remote location, the driveway is a couple of hundred feet long. the engine company found heavy fire conditions on the b side of the building. they made their initial attack there. >> anchor: no one was inside the house at the time but the fire chief said the family who lives there is still trying to find their dog. one of the first fire fighters on scene was rushed to the hospital because of smoke inhalation but we're told he is doing fine. the main part of this house is a total loss and fire crews say today's gusty winds are partially to blame for this fire spreading so quickly establishing water supply was difficult initially because we have such a long distance to the out to the street, this is a retreat lot. we're able to do that in a timely fashion and then we had wind was certainly a wind was somewhat of a factor. >> anchor: because no one was home at the time the exact cause of this fire at this point still unclear. investigators are down the driveway at that house right now trying to figure that out.

through a skylight. they think this person jumped on to the roof and then jumped on to another roof and tried to break into yet a second home. >> anchor: it keeps going. they eventually arrested that suspect in a third home he allegedly broke into. kelly o'hara live in boston's north end with more on the accused rooftop robber. kelly? boston police are calling him a fiddler on the roof. he says not only did thee try to break into one but actually four apartments. it's kind of scary to think that someone that. i think that's crazy. >> reporter: people in this north end neighborhood alarmed after a man tried to break into several apartments sunday morning by climbing up on to people's roofs. he climbed up to the roof over there then walked around and tried to get in the window where the bikes is. he was yelling, yelling some stuff. >> reporter: kendall and her husband were sound asleep until they heard a noise right outside their window. i guess he yells revolution from the roof and so he went and

roof. he started trying to open the window and we have two windows so he opened the first one and then i guess he started pushing on the other one and my husband just held the window so it won't break. luckily though the rooftop burglar couldn't get in 3 i guess someone must have yelled at him, distracted him and he started talking to them and stomping on the skylight and banking on the window again then the cops came. >> reporter: boston police arrested a 24-year-old new york man tried to get into three people around here says christ doesn't happen often. a little fright being to kind of think about someone potentially doing that. >> reporter: luckily no one was hurt at all. as for that man, he is currently behind bars facing several charges. kelly o'hara, 7 news. >> anchor: a lot of clouds around metro boston, bit of a president but dunn on the cape and islands more about rain and
6:17 pm
>> reporter: all right, the wore the of hermine right now, wind will begin to ease later on this evening, just around midnight tonight and in terms of the next several days a risk of an isolated shower or two tomorrow and again on wednesday, but still beach erosion and high surf from the big old wind machine right here again here she is, post tropical storm hermine well to the southeast of new england.
6:18 pm
mice, boston gusts to 31. martha's vineyard and nantucket had peak gusts earlier today near 60 miles per hour. right now gusting 440, 45 miles per hour. again i think the greatest concern with the wind is now up until about midnight tonight and then at that time the wind will significantly begin to subside later on tonight. now we had nor'easter that generated winds this strong or even stronger. the concern this evening is the fact that we have leaves on those trees and in the wintertime the wind can pass through the tree and not the other concern too is the drought and so with no moisture on the ground the root system is stressed out that. might be something that leads to mine tree damage and power disruption later on this evening. then overnight tonight and again tomorrow morning by 5:00 a.m. you notice these wind speeds will still have a bit after breeze through the day tomorrow but that's all it will be. i don't think we'll have to be concerned with damaging wind after midnight tonight or tomorrow with winds out of the north and northeast refreshing about 10 to 20 miles per hour occasionally gusting over 25
6:19 pm
this too disappointing because we are not getting the significant rain into southern new england. we need the rain and there has been a appreciable rape on nantucket as well as martha's vineyard and the cape but as these bands are rain move west they encounter dry air so i think this will be it for the rain. the city of boston the south shore and the cape and then after about 10:00 or 11:00 tonight the rain too will begin to wind down. out along 459 and wist thereof probably nothing and ev think the will probably be lower than what you see from our computer weather prediction here probably a tenth of an inch or less with the highest amounts focused on the sought and cape. those locations a quarter to and some locations 3/4 of an inch of beneficial rain. so hermine again tomorrow and again on wednesday not that far away but much weaker. it just kind of sits and spins south of new england for a few days, winding down and then eventually just falling apart
6:20 pm
back into summer mode. warm and turning increasingly more humid by the end of the week with temperatures heading back into the 80's. perhaps near 90 degrees by friday. so tonight again evening winds strongest on the cape and ilan coastal showers 62 to 66. for tomorrow a lot of clouds but not as windy and an isolated shower but again key word there is isolated. temperatures 68 to 75. wednesday a lot of clouds, humid temperatures on wednesday in the upper 70's to around 80 degrees. your 7 on 7 forecast thurs temperatures in the upper 80's to the low 90's. see you at 7:00. it's the beginning of a journey. you know, there is a lot of uncertainty. we don't know what will happen. that's what makes it kind of fun. if you knew what would happen it wouldn't be worth it. >> reporter: with tom brady and rob ninkovich serving four
6:21 pm
gronkowski's status up in the air. pats are dealing with more than uncertainty as they get set to kick off the regular season in arizona. matthew slator is confident his team will do what they always do. the leadership on this team starting with coach belichick is excellent. he disease a good job of just getting the team focused and living in the moment, not looking past the day and i think this team has embusinessed that mentality and try to do the best we can with the cards we've been dealt. >> anchor: newcomer councilor sununu long will be counting on to help fill the void left by thank very much. the number two overall pick comes to new england after spending the first 8 years of his career in st. louis and after seeing cardinals twice a year while with the rams long knows patriots will have their hands full with the nfc west champions. they are great football team. i certainly have played them a lot in the past bing in their division in the past and we have a lot of great players, explosive team.
