>> 7 news at 7:00 starts now. >> anchor: tonight on 7. hermine is storming in. >> that means part of living in new england. >> anchor: the rough surf creating coastal concerns. and we begin at 7 tracking hermine. this is a live look at the waves are pounding the coast as this storm moves through. high surf warnings posted all along southern new england. >> anchor: riding the height of the storm on this labor day monday. from the cape to the south coast a team of 7 news reporters covering the impact. >> reporter: okay. adam. right now she's 160 miles to the southeast of the south fork of long island.

southern new england coastline. winds at 70 miles per hour. she will move west northwest and weaken considerably over the night tonight and through the day tomorrow. if there's anything left of her on wednesday, wednesday night and thursday morning she will drift across nantucket. tropical storm warning in effect for the cape and the islands as well as portions of the south coast. does not include the city of boston or the north or south shore. the the winds will be near 40 miles per hour. martha's vineyards gust of 38. peek gusts earlier this afternoon close to 60 miles an hour on the vineyard as well as nantucket. we anticipate these winds to remain high until about midnight tonight. after that time the winds will begin to ramp down. winds gusting 50 miles per hour

power disruption. these squalls marching through the ocean they fall apart in metro west. in metro west just a few clouds maybe a sprinkle. this is a fire hose of tropical moisture in buzzards bay. in sandwich and born and falmouth and this continues to head west southwest over the next 35 to 45 minutes. we will talk about this and forecast ; beaches on the cape closed down. powerful waves and dangerous rip currents forcing life guards to make that call. amaka ubaka live on nasset beach in oralines to show the conditions there. amaka. >> reporter: it's pretty windy. sand is everywhere. as you look behind me you see the waves are really pounding. officials warn people to stay

we've seen a couple of people out here taking chances strolling the beach in high winds. officials warned about the dangerous rip currents out there. people taking chances and walking along. all of this is added to a pretty dangerous day. the impact of hermine felt here on nasset beach. the blistering rain and wind felt by beach goers and storm chasers. >> you can il phone said keep the phone still while taking pictures. >> reporter: tractors roll on to the beach to pick up and remove life guard stands. >> you stand there and put my arms out and mother's nature's fury. >> reporter: 8 feet in oralines. rip currents so dangerous they closed the beach. people warned to stay out of the

surfing. we found 2 guys taking chances. >> anybody we've seen in the water today which is one gentleman that we asked to get out. we had everybody watch from the beach today. >> reporter: 12 foot seas or higher expected off shore they are not taking any chances. >> throwing extra lines on the boat. that's about it. protected from northeast wind around here. >> reporter: saw a couple flying the kite. that's jr approved. but getting in the r swells on top of waves are from storms off shore such as this one. >> it is gusting up to 40, 50 miles an hour down here. that make its more treacherous for the surfing as well. it's not easy to pull into waves. if you're out behind the breakers and this wind pushing you further and further away from the beach can get yourself in a tough situation. >> reporter: in the last 20 to 30 seconds the rain has picked

that apparently was thrown on the officer's lawn. boston police sending that picture to us. the officer walked outside found that in their lawn at 8:00 in the morning on sunday. they're describing as a moll tav cocktail like device. you can see that in the picture. boston police and boston fire are both involved in the investigation. commissioner evans releasing safety and well being of my officers is of the highest importance to me and as a result this is an incident we are taking seriously and investigating accordingly. what they're looking at right now trying to determine if this officer was targeted or if this was some kind of random act by somebody who happened to walk by and throw that in a random lawn. anyone with information should contact police.

the strongest winds will begin to subside. this is the height of the storm. you in nashua and jaffrey going what storm? you're right not much of a storm in boston. down along the south coast and the cape winds gusting 35, 45 miles per hour. the potential of the occasional gust 45 to 50 miles per hour. then it will begin to ramp down after midnight by tomorrow morning the 5 a.m. you're seeing some wind. it's not the damaging wind we've seen throughout the afternoon as well as early this evening damaging wind potential we should say. through the day tomorrow north eastern wind 15 perhaps gusting as high as 25 miles per hour. refreshing. not one you have to be worried about power lines coming down. if you are lucky enough to get

downpours a half inch to an inch of rain. for a lot of us much ado about nothing. in the city of the boston this is over done. so hermine from this point forward it sits and spins. you remember that sit and spin as a kid. you sit down and twirl yourself around. it's going to fling itself down to the bottom side of the storm tomorrow morning and weaken. shs there will be a fair amount of clouds tomorrow and on wednesday with an isolated shower and a breeze. hermine fades away. we go back into summer time warmth and humidity by wednesday. temps tomorrow in the lower 70s. temps on wednesday close to 80. forget that thursday, friday and saturday upper 80s to the low 90s. after the showers fade away
