>> 7 news at 7:00 starts now. >> anchor: tonight on 7. hermine is storming in. >> that means part of living in new england. >> anchor: the rough surf creating coastal concerns. and we begin at 7 tracking hermine. this is a live look at the waves are pounding the coast as this storm moves through. high surf warnings posted all along southern new england. >> anchor: riding the height of the storm on this labor day monday. from the cape to the south coast a team of 7 news reporters covering the impact. >> reporter: okay. adam. right now she's 160 miles to the southeast of the south fork of long island.

southern new england coastline. winds at 70 miles per hour. she will move west northwest and weaken considerably over the night tonight and through the day tomorrow. if there's anything left of her on wednesday, wednesday night and thursday morning she will drift across nantucket. tropical storm warning in effect for the cape and the islands as well as portions of the south coast. does not include the city of boston or the north or south shore. the the winds will be near 40 miles per hour. martha's vineyards gust of 38. peek gusts earlier this afternoon close to 60 miles an hour on the vineyard as well as nantucket. we anticipate these winds to remain high until about midnight tonight. after that time the winds will begin to ramp down. winds gusting 50 miles per hour

power disruption. these squalls marching through the ocean they fall apart in metro west. in metro west just a few clouds maybe a sprinkle. this is a fire hose of tropical moisture in buzzards bay. in sandwich and born and falmouth and this continues to head west southwest over the next 35 to 45 minutes. we will talk about this and forecast ; beaches on the cape closed down. powerful waves and dangerous rip currents forcing life guards to make that call. amaka ubaka live on nasset beach in oralines to show the conditions there. amaka. >> reporter: it's pretty windy. sand is everywhere. as you look behind me you see the waves are really pounding. officials warn people to stay

we've seen a couple of people out here taking chances strolling the beach in high winds. officials warned about the dangerous rip currents out there. people taking chances and walking along. all of this is added to a pretty dangerous day. the impact of hermine felt here on nasset beach. the blistering rain and wind felt by beach goers and storm chasers. >> you can il phone said keep the phone still while taking pictures. >> reporter: tractors roll on to the beach to pick up and remove life guard stands. >> you stand there and put my arms out and mother's nature's fury. >> reporter: 8 feet in oralines. rip currents so dangerous they closed the beach. people warned to stay out of the

they wouldn't let us stay anymore. they tape today off. >> reporter: oralines officials say with the storm they expect major beach erosion and then there's the rain coming down in bursts. the rain knocking it in side ways socking everyone. >> it's really sandy. i feel those grits of needles in your face and everything. >> reporter: you can see the high winds. we've seen people come and go all day. some of this caution tape 's up. officials warn people to stay off this beach. people are taking their chances and going along and strolling along the sand with their dogs. stay posted on conditions out here. for now live in oralines amaka ubaka 7 news. >> anchor: amaka playing meteorologist now and showing that hermine is churning up the coast here. brandon gunnoe live at horse neck beach in west port with the

allowed in the water here at horse neck beach today because of those serious swells you were talking about. up to 6' or more with high winds make a dangerous combination. he said we're going to experience like a nor'easter in west port. heavy bands of rain and wind at times it will let up only to ramp back up again. these winds are going to take these seas and push them out. the rain has picked up a gusts up to 50 miles per hour. high surf and heavy winds. the warnings were up. it didn't stop people from coming to check out the waves and mother nature. >> it's anywhere from 4 to 6'. bigger occasionally. we've closed the water to swimming and surfing as well today. >> reporter: high winds on the beach sent towels hats and flying. as you heard life guards closed

surfing. we found 2 guys taking chances. >> anybody we've seen in the water today which is one gentleman that we asked to get out. we had everybody watch from the beach today. >> reporter: 12 foot seas or higher expected off shore they are not taking any chances. >> throwing extra lines on the boat. that's about it. protected from northeast wind around here. >> reporter: saw a couple flying the kite. that's jr approved. but getting in the r swells on top of waves are from storms off shore such as this one. >> it is gusting up to 40, 50 miles an hour down here. that make its more treacherous for the surfing as well. it's not easy to pull into waves. if you're out behind the breakers and this wind pushing you further and further away from the beach can get yourself in a tough situation. >> reporter: in the last 20 to 30 seconds the rain has picked

rain and wind that jr is talking about. wind gusts up to 40 to 50 miles per hour blowing this rain sideways. live in west port brandon gunnoe. >> anchor: looks worse where brandon is than an hour ago. tree came down on an over head wire on the woodland stop on the green line. no one was hurt. you can interactive radar. go to our 7 news app and click weather for updates on the go. >> anchor: police are saying that someone launched a device similar to a moll tav cocktail into a police officer's yard. >> anchor: nick 'emon his live outside of headquarters with the breaking details. >> reporter: kim, adam, concerning for the department given everything that's gone on around the country in the past

that apparently was thrown on the officer's lawn. boston police sending that picture to us. the officer walked outside found that in their lawn at 8:00 in the morning on sunday. they're describing as a moll tav cocktail like device. you can see that in the picture. boston police and boston fire are both involved in the investigation. commissioner evans releasing safety and well being of my officers is of the highest importance to me and as a result this is an incident we are taking seriously and investigating accordingly. what they're looking at right now trying to determine if this officer was targeted or if this was some kind of random act by somebody who happened to walk by and throw that in a random lawn. anyone with information should contact police.

story in halifax. fire fighters from towns racing in to battle a huge fire. those flames ripping through a home. right now investigators are really focussed into looking into how it started. tim caputo live in halifax with details. tim. >> reporter: yeah, kim, they're still trying to figure that out. they start to roll up the hoses out here. crews are leaving the at this point investigators trying to figure out how it started. flames ripped through the roof of this home in halifax. by the time fire fighters got to this somewhat sewill included house the home was already engulfed. around 1 this afternoon at a home in thompson street. >> the driveway is a couple hundred feet long. heavy fire conditions on the b side of the building. they made their initial attack

save the edition on the side of the house. the fire chief says today's weather didn't help. >> wind was certainly wind was somewhat of a factor. >> reporter: the family who lives here is still trying to find their dog. went into the burning house to see if anyone was home. one fire fighter was taken to the hospital because of smoke inhalation. we're told he's doing fine. investigators have been on scene here for the better part of this afternoon going now. at this point no word on the exact cause of this fire. tim caputo 7 news. >> anchor: a deadly fire is under investigation in rhode island. investigators say a 7-year-old boy and his 2 teenage sisters had to be rushed to the hospital. that young boy passed away. his parents were not home when the fire happened. >> anchor: also on 7 a

and facing charges accused of gross lewdness and witness intimidation. the inappropriate conduct happened in the presence of a framingham state student. it's shocking to hear on the quiet campus. >> we're a close knit school. so when you hear something like that it shocks the whole campus. >> anchor: that officer was placed on administrative leave and ordered to stay away from campus while the investigation continues. >> anchor: awo is facing charges after slamming into a police cruiser. and police say the woman was speeding in her car when she drove through a stop sign t boning a born police cruiser. both of those cruisers spun out in nearby yards. the driver and the officer should be okay. >> anchor: still coming up on 7 news at 7 trouble in boston's north end.

neighbors are on alert. kelly o'hara reports from the north end. >> scary to think someone might be doing that. >> i think that's crazy. >> reporter: people in this neighborhood alarmed after a man tried to break into several apartments by climbing up on people's roofs. >> on to the roof over there. and walked around and tried to get in the window. he was yelling. he was yelling some stuff. >> reporter: sound asleep until they heard a noise outside >> he yelled to people revolution. >> reporter: the guy? >> from the roof. we yelled at him to get off the roof. started to open the window. we have 2 windows. he opened the first one and started pushing on the other one. >> reporter: luckily though the roof top burglar couldn't get in. >> someone must have yelled at him distracted them. he started talking to them. stomping on the sky light and banging on the window again.

a 24-year-old new york man. people around here say crime doesn't happen often. >> definitely frightening to think about someone potentially doing that. >> reporter: no one was hurt in the break ins and attempted break ins. in the north end kelly o'hara 7 news. >> anchor: still tracking hermine the storm bringing in strong wind and rain to much of this is video out of oralines. no one on those beaches. they're shut down because of concern about dangerous rip currents. the storm still building over the next few hours. >> anchor: we have video compare and contrast for you. this is the brain tree split. looks like the rain is coming down. the wind whipping rain drops on the camera lens. move few miles north and a different picture.

would be happening. so where's the line? >> reporter: it's wild. on the doppler radar now. here's that band of steady rain slicing through the brain tree area. from the ocean behaving like a nor'easter. city of boston metro west. a lot of clouds. not much in the way of rain. most if not all of the activity focussed down towards the south coast on the cape and the could get back to him. we lost his signal. might be weather related here. he's in west port. those are the tropical downpours that potentially may lead to the strongest winds. as these outer bands from hermine continue to move in from the ocean. you see here again it's a narrow stripe of rain shower activity. it will begin to taper off this

the strongest winds will begin to subside. this is the height of the storm. you in nashua and jaffrey going what storm? you're right not much of a storm in boston. down along the south coast and the cape winds gusting 35, 45 miles per hour. the potential of the occasional gust 45 to 50 miles per hour. then it will begin to ramp down after midnight by tomorrow morning the 5 a.m. you're seeing some wind. it's not the damaging wind we've seen throughout the afternoon as well as early this evening damaging wind potential we should say. through the day tomorrow north eastern wind 15 perhaps gusting as high as 25 miles per hour. refreshing. not one you have to be worried about power lines coming down. if you are lucky enough to get

downpours a half inch to an inch of rain. for a lot of us much ado about nothing. in the city of the boston this is over done. so hermine from this point forward it sits and spins. you remember that sit and spin as a kid. you sit down and twirl yourself around. it's going to fling itself down to the bottom side of the storm tomorrow morning and weaken. shs there will be a fair amount of clouds tomorrow and on wednesday with an isolated shower and a breeze. hermine fades away. we go back into summer time warmth and humidity by wednesday. temps tomorrow in the lower 70s. temps on wednesday close to 80. forget that thursday, friday and saturday upper 80s to the low 90s. after the showers fade away
