boston university students barely back a week and one of them is hit and killed by a commuter rail train. it happened under the masspike in brighton overnight. >> the student was from china. steve cooper is live in boston where he spoke to students. >> this has really been a difficult day for the students and for the faculty here at bu trying to come to terms of exactly what happened. tonight police are still trying to figure out why this college freshman ended up wandering on to those train >> just a few days ago he got here, and he's already dead. it's very sad. >> reporter: a horrifying scene overnight over a 17-year-old boston university freshman who police say was from china is struck and killed after coming in contact with an mbta commuter train just before midnight. >> preliminary investigation suggests that this is just a tragic horrendous accident. >> reporter: a tragic horrendous accident that happened under the masspike between the bu dorms on buick street and storrow drive.

>> i remember being a freshman and everything is new and meeting everybody and then you hear that and it's like, gosh, no one has a chance. >> reporter: investigators say the teen was hit by one train but the conductor of a second train that noticed the body. that train with 300 passengers on board was kept on the scene by detectives more than three hours in the middle of the night before the train was finally allowed to continue on. >> we are going to conduct a review and determine delay for the passengers was as extensive as it was. >> reporter: and as investigator continue to look for answers, so too do heart broken kids on campus. >> we just felt really bad for his family and for him, that -- i mean, classes started yesterday. >> and so police are still trying to reach out to the victim's family in china. his name isn't being released right now. bu says they're make grief counselors available to students around here and transit police

live in boston, steve cooper, 7news. and rooftop robber in boston's north end facing a judge today. police and witnesses say damon tahotta tried to break into four homes early sunday morning. one person says she heard a screwdriver trying to get into their partial. they called police but before officers arrived witnesses say tahotta tried to break into two more apartments. police say he jumped into the roof of another apartment building and ran into his home. arficers were then able to running away from a fight when he ended up on the north end. the 24-year-old man from new york is being held on bail. we're just days away from the patriots' seasoning opener and the focus on that guy, jimmy garoppolo as he fills in for tom brady. garropolo, the back-up quarterback, says he's up for the challenge. 7's dan hausle live at foxboro where garoppolo spoke to reporters today?

a new assignment for students at a school in holyoke and this one is making national headlines. instead of going home after school and doing homework, teachers are encouraging kids to spend time with their families. >> so administrators are hoping their no change how students actually learn. nicole oliverio has all the reaction. >> a new assignment for students at the kelly school in holyoke, and that's no assignment. the school has implemented a homework-free policy. >> if you look at research, there's no direct correlation. that homework improves student performance. >> reporter: part of the turnaround plan was to extend the school day by nearly two

shower, as well as the higher dewpoints, the humidity. so even though what's left of the storm fades away and the threat of the showers fade away, we'll hold on to the humidity. unusual that you see a band of showers and downpours moving west into connecticut. not coming out connecticut, but again, when you've got a tropical system that kind of parks out in new england, then goofy things will happen. >> and this will fade away. this is our next weather system right here. it's drawn as anytime soon. for tonight, a lot of clouds, patchy fog. muggy, temps 64 to 69. through the day tomorrow, similar to today where we start with clouds, and then we'll see developing sunshine. there may be a spot shower, very early tomorrow morning. more likely it would take on the form of patchy drizzle. then anything else and even that, again, patchy. and then warm and humid. temps between 78 and 84. boston tomorrow afternoon, 78. attleboro, norwood, lower 80s.
