live in methuen tonight, steve cooper, 7 news. >> kim: also breaking the boston fire department battling roof top flames in the south end. more than a dozen firefighters working to get things under control there. >> adam: what made things worse, there were propane tanks that started exploding. june cuoco is live with the latest. you look at the roof top. it doesn't look like there were roof stokes this propane tank thing seems a mystery. >> reporter: that's right. that is what firefighters are trying to investigate right now. they told us that multiple buildings here have extensive damage. one where the actual fire was then two others that have smoke and water damage. now if you take a look behind me you can see crews are still onscene but it appears that they're trying to pack up. the boston fire department got her at about 3:30 to 73 rutland street to a

the fire shooting outs of the roof. apparently things could have have been worse in the area if it wasn't for an alert neighbor. find out more. kimberly bookman live in cohasset with what someone did to help. >> reporter: kim, that neighbor was just out getting his mail what he saw a huge plume of smoke, a sight he won't soon for get. sky 7 over the fire that consumed this home. the flames were noticed by neighbor was getting his mail around 12:30 this afternoon. >> when i saw the magnitude of the smoke coming out, i called 911 and i said this a big one. >> reporter: after learning no one was home and calling for help he started videotaping the flames with his phone. he says he was concerned because it's so dry and flames were getting out of control. people reported seeing smoke miles away. >> the biggest challenge was just the location. it's far enough away from the fire station and the fire had a big head start on

the man allegedly waved a big knife at a 4-year-old boy as his frightened parents watched then approached the adults. in court documents a police report reveals the witnesses claimed guy yelled "i remember you. i'm going to get you." >> this is a bad area of east boston, this is the worst area. >> reporter: parents told us they were never informed of this incident by the school. others checked ons their kids as word spread. are you going to take the kids out of school? >> no, no, i just talked to the secretary. school and the police did a very good job. >> reporter: the boston public school system released this statement: so why were parents not informed apparently? we tried to get information from the boston school department. but no call back on that. the suspect faces six counts by the way including four of assault and battery with a deadly weapon. he lives ripe the street
