10:00 am
of a store full of surprises. you never know what you're gonna find, but you know you're gonna love it. this morning on today's take, it is freebie friday. we're giving out something big. find out how you can win something at home. and a live musical performance. and i'm rockin' my rickshaw all around town with more surprise guests. all >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today's take" with al roker, tamron hall, and billy bush. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. welcome to "today" on this friday morning, september 16th, 2016. thank god it is friday. sheinelle jones is here because tamron is off. we are forever linked.
10:01 am
that puts us way ahead of any two people randomly saying hello. >> this is the first time we've actually made eye contact and had a fun conversation but we do share this connection. >> hello. >> how are you? >> so let's talk about the elephant. our connection. key word lochte? >> key word lochte. you know what happened with me in rio obviously. we had the lochte situation. i ran into the guy outside a usa house. i took out my phone. i did an interview. >> i'm afraid i launched it into like -- >> you did. because of billy, all of a sudden an interview that i did with ryan lochte is -- really years ago when he was launching his reality show, what's old is new again. apparently it is the gift that keeps on giving. people are like, wait a minute, are you that girl, the anchor that couldn't stop laughing when you were interviewing ryan lochte? take a look. #secondlife is back. >> is it bothering you to have the cameras following you around
10:02 am
>> you know, i'm getting used to it. >> i look forward to watching what would ryan do. >> he is good looking. we are so going to get in trouble. >> seriously. how are they going to put together like 13 weeks of programming? >> he's so cute. >> it was one of those things, you know when you get the church. be quiet. at the most -- i just couldn't stop. my co-anchor and the crew and everybody's laughing. it was just -- >> you're like "he's so cute." and a little slow on the uptake as well. >> i didn't know his little reputation. when i asked him do the cameras follow you in the bathroom? he said there is a sink, then there is a toilet, and i just -- and it was -- behind the scenes
10:03 am
then when we said good-bye, we were on camera. a lot of people said were you really on camera? oh, yeah. i am who i am. >> what is it like to have a video that's viewed over 5 million times? maybe like 10,000 for mine. >> keep in mind, when that happened years ago, that was kind of new. things going viral and being all over twitter. so i remember going home and i told my husband, i was like something happened on the show today. he is like, oh, stuff always happens. i was like, no, i think this is different. he goes whatever, no big . i was like, this thing is everywhere. then it died down. our executive producer of our weekend show just said last week he was on the train and there was a woman cracking up because she was looking at that video on her facebook page. cheers, guys, if you need a laugh. if i sound a little like lochte today, a little slow on uptake, i was out all night with
10:04 am
we both love the zac brown band. i looked at the schedule, there was a concert in charlotte, north carolina. we said we got to find some deserving moms, people, someone that we can take with us. we found these two moms. one of them, by the way, her husband is a huge zac brown fan. he didn't even know where she was going. when he found out, he was not thrilled. we took these moms to zac brown in charlotte, north carolina, last t. night? >> last night with these women right here. that's sue on the left. that's kathy on the right. they've been through a tough, tough time. >> well, good for you guys. >> children with cancer. >> you will tell us more about that. >> more later on. but this was some night. hoda kotb is a liability. she is a selfie machine. it is great that we stopped for selfies all the time.
10:05 am
>> what time did you get back last night? >> the wheels touched down at midnight. >> you're kidding. so here's the thing. i'm looking at you thinking, that's the fancy life. you want to know my life? these are the kinds of things i do at midnight. my 4-year-old swallowed a quarter. swallowed a quarter. so i have been stressed out. i'm not going to lie. i'm just going to get my nails done, i need a moment. i'm getting my nails done. i look at my cell phone and my husband said, um, our little guy just swallowed a quarter. i'm like -- what? the nail tech is like, wait, one more coat. i'm like, no, we don't have time for one more coat. >> did you get the quarter out? >> you want too skip to the end? >> no, i'm worried about the boy. >> we went to the e.r.
10:06 am
x-ray tech is like, mom, come here. it was a medallion. it looked like a medal. here's what you need to do. activia, plums, pears, anything that starts with a "p." throw it in the blender. gave him a little mommy!" a mother's love -- i was told i had to prove that we got it. i got it -- i'll speak to this. plastic knife. wait, wait, we all ran into the bathroom. it was like christmas morning. we were hugging, crying. oh, man. i will tell you this. so only because -- you know, if we had a second date i'll bring
10:07 am
we put it in a little bag gee. it doesn't even look like a quarter anymore. it is amazing what your stomach acids do. it looks like a big penny. like it's no longer silver. >> you know, that happened one time -- we had a new baby, too. we had a 4 and a 2-year-old. the 4-year-old gave the 2-year-old a penny who swallowed it maybe like get out of my life. i want to be the only child. i don't know what she's saying. all of a sudden my wife notices and she just, boom, room, grabs it and just finger down the throat. she said we're not going to risk this. i'm going all the way down. i still don't think she talks right. whipped this thing out of there. there is nothing scarier in the world than that. >> my husband did the heimlich and all that. didn't work. still scary for a few days. good old activia, plums and a blender and all is well. trump, the donald, was on
10:08 am
and appropriate, request. >> i just wanted to note there's something we could do that's just not presidential really or something that we can do now that we're just both civilians. like -- >> like what? i'm not liking the sound of this. go ahead. >> can i mess your hair up? >> the answer is yes. but the people in new hampshire where i'm going to be in about an hour from now, i hope they're going to >> go ahead. [ drum roll ] >> i was thinking is he the kind of guy that will play. would he play. and he did it. >> so smart to do that. >> you're right. >> i want to see him come out -- i want to see donald come out of the pool. when he comes up like that out
10:09 am
long. >> there is a little piece of me that wondered if it was real. see, i don't know the man. never seen him in person. so i think there are some people in america who, like me, just it was a little piece of us that wondered, wait a minute, i want to see if jimmy will go all the way. >> years before he let me lift up the top layer which is hardened with hairspray. but he let me lift it to see if the scalp. after that forensic study, i did come up with a conclusion that, yes, the hair was real. >> that it's real. >> but seeing it out of line is -- it's like seeing his legs. >> whoa! >> he has legs? in shorts? >> you see how quickly he fixed it? he didn't even need a mirror. >> he was in new hampshire later on. it took a village probably -- i don't think it entirely went back. >> does he have like a -- >> you see it is a little tighter right there? >> you're right. >> on the sides?
10:10 am
hey, up next -- >> there we go. >> not the same. >> and darker. big weekend in hollywood. the emmy awards are this sunday. with "game of thrones" sweep the night? with julia louis if you have a typical airline credit card, you only earn double miles when you buy stuff from that airline. wait...is this where you typically shop? you should be getting double miles on every purchase! enture, you earn unlimited double miles on every purchase, everywhere, every day. not just ...(dismissively) airline purchases. seriously... double miles... everywhere. what's in your wallet? someone's finally ready to start her day. time to work some magic. tada.

back now with more of "today's take." the emmys are this sunday, hosted by jimmy "game of thrones" nominated for 23 emmys. i think julia louis dreyfus will probably win again for lead in the comedy. don't you think? >> for the fifth year in a row? >> yeah. >> i guess when you add in her win for "the new adventures of old christine" would give her the most ever in the category. surpassing mary tyler moore.
10:14 am
time being nominated. not tons of range but the story line was so great in a show that is a phenomenon. i think he probably will. >> a if he phenomenon is a good word for it. people are obsessed with "game of thrones." i think i'm the only person on the planet -- >> no, nice to meet you. billy bush. can't do it. >> the thing is if you watch it all the time and are into the story line, it's complicated. my husband is obsessed with it. at nig i make him put in his ear buds. he's obsessed. he finds time to watch it and i tried to watch for the first time and i'm lost. >> now the ship has sailed. i just can't catch up. too much work. >> one day maybe? >> no. i don't think so. but "the walking dead," i haven't even either. can't do that one either.

10:16 am
>> for you, you've got all of these designer outfits, people are with their jewels, going around the country saving america with their movies. >> mine is decidedly more important. but a lot more fun. >> we'll talk about that the next morning. lot of people talking about the deangelo williams story. he tipped a waitress, gave her 75 cents on $140. i'm a personal believer, i know it is a little maybe politically incorrect to say, but if the waitress or w terrible and full of attitude and just -- i mean why would you reward that with a nice tip? >> because you have to because you are billy bush. >> in that case, that's right. it would have to be really, really bad. i don't think you can just stiff them. you have to talk to the manager, let the manager know that they have terrible service going on in their place. >> gone are the days, if you have a good waitress or waiter, 15%? you don't do 15% anymore. it is 20%. >> 20% makes you cheap these
10:17 am
>> yeah. >> i take the decimal, move it over and double it. it is easy math. 20% works for me. >> "the washington post" came out with the basic rules of tipping to help us all out. 20% right now with a full bill. what they didn't touch on is, do you tip 20% on the wine, too? like if if you order wine, it's not the same as preparing the food. just opening and pouring. >> do you do 15% for that? >> some people do 10% on the wine, 20% on the food? i think >> you go in, you are food is not ready, you have a water or something while you wait. then they give you a bill? you still tip for carryout? apparently you are supposed to. 10% for carry out. >> i'll start doing 10%. probably 15% just to make up for what i just said. >> so we don't talk about you when you walk away. >> i tell you who is a great, great tipper? dylan. >> my buddy. >> she always tips like 45%. if you see dylan in your
