at approximately 8:30 this evening, officers from the tenth precinct were on patrol, driving westbound on west 23rd street when they witnessed a large explosion in front of 131 west 23rd street. the officers immediately called for additional units and ambulances. f.b.i. joint terrorist task force were requested to respond. as of this time, the exact cause of the explosion has not been determined. the investigation into this incident is active. at this time, an extensive search is being conducted. as the mayor spoke, there is an ongoing situation on 27th street right now. the area around the explosion site is being treated as a crime scene.

evidence to indicate that this explosion is the result of any natural gas cause. again, the exact nature and cause of the explosion has not been determined yet. as of the most recent information, there have been 29 injuries reported. one of these injuries may be considered serious. and the commissioner will talk about that in a couple of minutes. the fire department is currently assessing the extent of any possible structural damage explosion. as further information is developed, we will provide it and give you updates. commissioner? >> our units heard this, actually, from their locations and joined the nypd members on the scene search the buildings that were affected. and as commissioner o'neill said, there were 29 injuries

we will kind of break down what we know as of right now. >> reporter: well, nick and nicole, reports of the explosion came in just before 9:00 tonight. new york city fire officials confirming at least 29 people are hurt. and they are calling this, as you mentioned, an intentional attack. police and fire crews say the explosion happened near 23rd street and sixth avenue in the chelsea neighborhood. tonight, traffic is restricted in the area as crews continue to investigate. police say the victims have non-life-threatening hospitals. witnesses are talking about the terrifying moments, saying they fell the explosion. >> it was scary at first. and then it sounded like thunder. and it just sounded really heavy. and if you are close, it did kind of, like, you felt it in your heart. you know? like, when you are hearing fireworks, it felt like fireworks. >> right now, i feel... i'm scared. i don't know what happened. if you live here, like the

securing the scene. >> if the race did go off on time, there would have been a lot of injuries. >> it's so scary. you know, there is nowhere safe anymore. we love it here. you never hear anything like that around here. >> anchor: now, the blast went off inside a trash can. debris was spread thousands of feet away. no one was injured in this. we just got an update from mayor de blasio as well as emergency officials in new york city. they do not bel both investigations are ongoing. >> anchor: also from the night team: a water rescue in nahant. two dyers pulled from the water. one of them was unconscious. >> anchor: yeah. both rushed to salem emergency room for treatment. the night team's kelli o'hara is in nahant with the details. >> reporter: yeah. and police now tell us the district attorney's office is investigating what happened here out on the water. but people here say it is
