10:00 am
this morning on today's take, what both sides are saying about the shocking split. and america ferrara takes us inside "superstore." al and i go to the ballpark. now. >> annouer: from nbc news, this is today's takes with al roker, tamron hall and billy bush live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. welcome to "today" on this wednesday morning, september 21st. billy, al, tamron. we've got two others -- >> very special people. >> my parents are here today. >> love is in the air.
10:01 am
possibly devastated over the brangelina breakup, there they are. 48 years and going strong. >> love does live. exactly. for the people out there like myself when we got the brangelina news. >> my mom is going it does? >> your dad is quite the dapper dresser. >> like the bow tie? >> and the suspenders. >> and he has a great profile shot there. so yesterday when this news hit, tamron is in the middle of commercial breaks. i can't believe what's happened. al was inconsolable. i believe he wouldn't come out of his room. >> you know, i just feel badly. >> you feel badly? >> here's the deal. and i understand the interest in this. but if you have been unfortunate enough to go through a divorce and one with children involved, and i have done that, you know, you just worry about the children, you worry about -- and to do it in the public eye is
10:02 am
i've never been married but i'm the product of a divorce. my parents remarried other people. my mother went on 27 beautiful years with my dad, clarence newton. so i think we recognize these are human beings. the flip side, they're hollywood stars. and their marriage has been a point of fascination since the day they got together, allegedly on a movie set when he was still with jennifer aniston. so they get it. that's why they talk to the they sold their pictures of their children for a great cause, the wedding dress. they have allowed us in to some degree. >> it's interesting that they say -- she filed and says irreconcilable differences and her attorney says she's doing this for the health of the family. then her manager says she will always do what's in the best interests to protect her children. these are code words to me that seem to suggest that they're not safe with him --
10:03 am
get -- we don't -- that part we don't know. >> i'm saddened by this and then other things. there's reports about too much drinking and this and that. those are tabloid rumors at this point. nobody really knows what's going on. >> that doesn't stop us from talking about it. >> well, listen -- >> or the world. >> i think here's the deal. i think all of those things you set aside. you don't know. the allegations are -- when the news broke that they were apart or are divorcing, i was in a newsroom filled with mostly women and they all went "no!" they had a reaction. so we can talk about whatever high brow, the bottom line is people reacted to it. >> i'm not being high brow, i just -- >> i think men and women might be in different camps here. i'm wondering if guys are like, holy mackerel, you wouldn't believe what was going on last night. my wife, i told her and she said what? it never works out, and she hung
10:04 am
>> i think women fell in a couple of categories. there were some women like myself like what about love, can love ever survive? others took team jen. some of my friends instantly went jen aniston got her revenge, others were like team angie. it fell into this category both at work and in my personal relationships. >> are women more o'i think women, it seems to me from what i've heard and i've had are not as pro-angie as i thought they might be. >> i think because how it started. the rumors of how they started. you know, no one wants to be cheated on. certainly you don't want to be left standing there if your significant other or spouse allegedly cheats. i just felt like can love just survive. i just -- but if it's unhealthy, if it's unhealthy, you've got to get out. >> how about clooney now. we all assume unless it's a match made in hollywood that clooney and brad pitt are the
10:05 am
clooney is at the u.n. yesterday, he's there for a roundtable with president obama on the refugee crisis and he gets hit with the news, complete low blindsided. >> you're friends with both of them. any thoughts? >> what's that? >> the whirlwind on angelina and your friend brad. >> oh, what happened? >> they're divorcing. >> i didn't know that. >> she filed. >> i feel very sorry. that's a sad story and unfortunate for unfortunate story about a family. i'm very sorry to hear that. the first i've heard it. >> he's like -- i think also his orientation. you're at the u.n. and you're like, wait a minute, what? the orientation of it, you can't get your grounding. >> he left hollywood to go to the u.n. but hollywood did not leave him. it went with him. but i mean, geez, you thought they were great friends, he would know. he probably got on the phone and
10:06 am
mashable compiled a bunch of tweets on the theme love is dead. check out this twitter poll, love is dead. >> these are the options, love is dead, love is dead. jennifer aniston, word is brangelina is done. jennifer right now, hollywood. that's terrible. that >> she no matter what can never escape this triangle. >> and this is the other one. jennif jennifer an aniston is like #brangelina. and that is what we call closure. i saw them out at a restaurant and they are a stunning couple. there was this energy and i watched how he was escorting her through the door and just those
10:07 am
it's real life for them but that does not stop people from talking about it. >> where does it go from here? this could be the ugliest thing in the world. >> or they could work it out, you know. >> it's sad for the children. how long has this been going? it seems to me no one has heard about any -- heard anything about it. >> the last picture one of the magazines had ten weeks ago they were out with one of their children. what's also fascinating is they have a blended family and i believe b adopted the children she had prior to their marriage, which was maddox, pax and zahara. does that change the legality of it when you have kids that you adopted before and then you have your own children that you had once you were married. i don't know how all of that works and does that impact their situation. they have only been married also for two years. they were together ten. i always wondered did marriage freak them out because they had been together for ten years.
10:08 am
she said in an interview on "today" actually. so did that have a psychological effect. >> she's an interesting character. i remember i interviewed her before she met brad, this is after billy bob. and i said you have maddox now. what do you do about introducing maddox if you start dating somebody, do you bring that person into the house and let maddox have an opportunity to get attached? she said, no, i'm not bringing anyone home, i'll just take a i said what do you mean? i have friends and we'll just meet at a hotel for a few hours and then i'll go back. i was like, wow, she just shared that right out in the open. >> but she's been very -- from when she became famous and remember the lip lock with the brother, the vials of blood with billy bob thornton, she is not a demure creature and doesn't seem
10:09 am
smith." that's a great movie. up next, amy schumer spars with magazines once again over their covers. this is very interesting. the instagram photo that is blowing up the internet. and it's the nbc comedy that's been called funny and razor sharp, just like its star, america ferrara. we'll talk to america about "superstore" and her night the things that i consume on a daily basis, a lot of it is very acidic. the enamel on my teeth was actually weakening. wasn't there as much. my teeth didn't look as healthy as others. my dentist said that pronamel would help fight against that erosion that foods and drinks were causing. so it was really important to start using the pronamel. it'll be one less thing you have to worry about. pronamel is now giving me the confidence to know that i'm doing the right thing. so it's nice to know that it's as simple as that. ? someone you know is carrying
10:10 am
there's only one way to know how good it tastes. try it at walmart's low prices. we invited women to a spa to test a new body wash. dish soap. you may not feel it, but some body washes can contain cleansers found in dish soap. dove body wash is different. it has only the gentlest cleansers. it just made me feel good. this is dove. going to the skate park today? maybe... you can make it gr-r-reat! kellogg's frosted flakes gives you the sweet spark to go all in and let your great out. they're gr-r-reat! if your sneezes are a force to be reckoned with... you may be muddling through allergies. try zyrtec? for powerful allergy relief. and zyrtec? is different than claritin?. because it starts working faster on the first day you take it. try zyrtec?. muddle no more?. people say, let's just get a sandwich or something.
10:11 am
"or something." and we don't just pull smoked chicken, bake fresh foccacia and hand-slice avocado. there's nothing "or something" about it. what are you doing up? it's not even midnight, it's ten forty-three. well, let's have a ten forty-three snack. quietly, though. okay. yeah. mmmm. shhhh. the family favorite. yoplait. what do you call yogurt that comes in amazing flavors and packs 6 grams of protein per serving? yoplait original. you owned your car for four years. you named it brad.

10:13 am
alive? jonathan goldsmith was the original actor. well, i happened to get a gift from the most interesting man in the world. >> from space? >> yes, from space. >> well, he's obviously in the viewing area. >> he sent it on this lovely stationery. >> it looked like it burned in space. >> it's old school. he said i hope your colleagues see me as more than just man candy and perhaps ms. hall will reconsider only enjoying my company for a day. >> he's i >> so he says i heard you spoke of me on your morning television program. first off, i appreciate your admiration and i thank you. however, i must address your preposterous hypothesis suggesting that i'm dead. i'm afraid you're wrong, i'm very much alive and he's enclosed a case of dos equis but also sent me this lovely calendar compass during a visit during a monsoon.
10:14 am
space? >> he's watching us from space right now and he would like a date with you. >> this is the old one? can i see the picture? you asked me one year, one night, one week. >> there he is getting ready. >> oh, he's super handsome. >> how would he pick me up? what do you pick up a girl in if you're in space? >> well, he's back now. >> okay. >> he ran out of fuel at some point. >> we should all go. you guys can b when we find him, we're all going to go out on a date. listen, amy schumer, she posted this instagram comparing "girls' life" magazine and "boys' life" magazine. when amy posts it, it takes on new life. simple caption, no. >> if you aren't read it on the girls side it says fall fashions you'll love, your dream hair.
10:15 am
and a police officer, science, the whole possibilities that you have. i did not realize, al, you mentioned, that these magazines have been around. >> decades. for decades. >> i was a teen geek. i never saw them. >> look, the publisher of the magazine says they do feature stuff like that, empowering topics, but as we had in the orange room earlier, one of the tweets said, you know, if it. >> i tend to say that as well. listen, i grew up with barbie as well and i remember the huge backlash on barbie but yet i worked at toys r us so i knew this for a fact. the barbie aisle was the busiest aisle on christmas and you didn't see people returning barbies because their kids didn't want them. make chicken/egg, i don't know. >> and there are niche magazines

we are back with america ferrara and her hit show of course is "superstore." it returns for a new season tomorrow night. how fun is it to work on -- we have an ensemble show here. you had an how does that feel? >> it's the best, it's amazing. everyone on the show is so different, so unique. comes from such a different background. a lot of comedy people on the show. mark, colton dunn, who comes from the comedy world, lauren ash, mico santos, he's a stand-up comedian. so on top of fabulous writers,

10:32 am
>> i know, right, that would be great. >> that would be so terrific. >> it's called a vertical. but the key to the humor in "superstore" is a lot of sitcoms you see, you know, it's aspirational, you see this beautiful community and they live in this wonderful house. these are folks that are a little lower down on the socioeconomic ladder dealing with real issues and you guys take on all kinds of stuff. pay inequality and you do it in a funny way. this is smart. >> it's very and we ended season one with sort of a surprise walkout. my character has been on the job for ten years. she's not looking for things to change, but things happen and she just gets so fed up. and surprises herself by leading the employees in a walkout. that's where we ended season one. season two begins with us on strike. and so for a lot of people it's almost like a documentary, surprisingly. >> because you've been very vocal. you've got your t-shirt on which

tell me where you got that shirt. >> and she wants to know where you got the dress. >> i'll trade you. >> you want people coming up to you and saying this is my life. >> totally. >> you guys represent us. >> totally. that's what excited me about the show. i remember growing up watching comedies about everyday people. you know, roseannes and cheers and where everyday person's life had humor and was valued. and i think, look, i'm first in line for a big aspirational show or film, but there's room in television for the point of view of everyday working class people to be smart, to be funny, and to be dimensionalized. we have working class and poor people and giving them a voice on television represents a lot of people who feel voiceless and we do it in a fun way. that's what i love about the
