up after a very cool start to your workweek. here is chris lambert with a look at what's ahead. >> chris: we have some work to do this morning with the sunshine. no question about it. a frosty start in n many of the burbs. 28 in norwood this morning. 32 in bedford. 48 in boston. look at the bounceback. 36 degrees over the last six hours. norwood at 4 right now. 61 in boston. many towns in the mid to upper 6's this afternoon. light on-shore wind. not going to make a huge difference. maybe a cooler along the immediate coastline versus inland. sticking with mostly sunny skies. more clouds working in tonight. you see this band of showers. that is ours for tomorrow morning. wet roads out there for the morning commute. i do expect other than buzzards bay, the cape and the islands, for some drying by tomorrow afternoon, temperatures running into the low to mid-70's. and then after that, that is it in terms of temperatures in the 70's. 6's the rest of the week. low 60's at. that some unsettled weather,

more on the forecast coming up. >> christa: a family in mourning today after a five-year-old boy was hit by a car. and killed right outside of their home. let's go to john cuoco in grafton with an update for us. john? >> reporter: well, christa, this is still an active investigation but today, the graphton school district is concentrating on the children of the town, helping them deal with this loss. >> yeah. it is heartbreaking for a little boy to get >> reporter: tragedy in the town of grafton on sunday. a five-year-old boy hit and killed by a car outside of his house on samuel drive. according to the worcester telegram and gazette, the young boy was a kindergartner at one of the elementary schools. the telegram and gazette says grief counselor lors will be on hand at that school and one other where the boy's older siblings go. the accident happened around 4:00 on sunday afternoon. fast minivan was towed from the scene as detectives investigated. the worcester county d.a.'s office says state police are

but this appears to be a terrible accident. and not a crime. >> when i came back to the neighborhood, i knew it was unusual to see so many police and fire and another neighbor said a child was run over. that is all i know really. it is heartbreaking for the family and everyone. >> reporter: a catholic priest privacy. >> little kids will do what they do. it was an accident. you know, as i assume. my heart is broken for those people. >> reporter: the superintendent confirming that information about the schools. the d.a.'s office still not releasing the name of the boy or the driver. we are live in grafton, john cuoco, 7 news. >> kris: a fitchburg woman is dead after her home went up in flames.

morning. multiple crews responded to help put out the flames. there is still no word yet on the cause. busy morning for fitchburg firefighters as well. they put out another blaze at a vacant school. this one started at the old vf brown school on academy street around 4:00 a.m. the school had been canceled at the nearby middle school because of the smoke. there is no word on the cause of that fire either. no one was hurt. police are looking for a suspect in an early-morning stabbing that happened in dorchester. according to e.m.s., the stabbinpp this morning. crews say the female victim is being treated at a boston hospital. no word yet on her condition. >> christa: a missing boater found off of martha's vineyard. nathan carman and his mother disappeared 7 days ago after leaving for a fishing trip in rhode island. right now, crews are still searching for his mother. and their boat. >> we are ecstatic.

the son of a greenskeeper turned head golf professional in pennsylvania. his hollywood good looks and powerful yet unorthodox swing made him a golf superstar. fans crowded the fareways in droves and came to be known as arnie's army. many who couldn't watch him on the course in person, did so in their living rooms in the 50's and 60's. palmer's popularity grew and companies wanted arnie pitching their products. >> arnie, they said, the track or the will like it. same pennzoil. new package. >> reporter: nicknamed the king. he became famous for his strength in shot-making. he loved to take chances on the course. saying "you must play boldly to win." and win, he did. 7 majors and 95 professional victories including the champions tour. a venture he helped to jump-start in 1980. palmer stopped playing in champions tour in 2006 but remained a vital part of the

an all-star baseball pitcher today. jose fernandez died on sunday in a boeing crash down in florida. the 24-year-old and two other men died when the boat hit rocks at full speed. and then flipped over. this was early on sunday morning. fernandez had defected from cuba when he was 15 years old. he was an all-star for the miami marlins. two-time. officials say this is a tragedy for the entire area. >> i'm sorry i'm getting goose bumps right now. it is really hitting home. it's rr family, for friends, but for the marlin community, the state of florida, major league baseball, and anyone who met this gentleman. >> christa: david ortiz also getting emotional before sunday's game against the rays. he faced hernandez in the all-star game in july. he shared his thoughts on twitter sunday writing "i don't have the words to describe the pain i feel for the loss of my friend jose. good-bye, my friend." investigators do not believe

in that crash. >> christa: happening today: now the suspect allegedly behind a deadly shooting at a mall in washington state will face a judge. the 22-year-old is facing first-degree murder charges. officer arrested him saturday night after a 24-hour manhunt. police say he used an assault rifle to shoot and kill five people at a macy's store friday night. right now, investigators are looking for a motive behind the shooting rampage. >> christa: officials are thinking about switching up the grades in both elementary and in high school. so let's go to victoria warren. she is live from boston with more on what they are thinking about here. >> reporter: for years, the move in boston has been to have schools like the one behind me to have them go from kindergarten to eighth grade. now enrollment for 6, 7, and 8th grades, it is down in boston. the superintendent says it might be time to rethink that strategy.

public schools aimed at keeping families in the public school system. >> we are seeing our enrollment in boston public schools severely drop in our middle school grade levels. >> reporter: at an event aimed at getting school employees to volunteer to mentor students, the superintendent tommy chang said he is looking into whether they should drastically change the landscape of the schools. moving away from k-8 and then high school to a model focused on k-6 and then 7th-12. he says a lot of families hit sixth grade and then move to charter schools. >> right now, many of our middle schools and are k-8's do not have the programming our young people need. we want more kids in boston public schools. more academic programming in those grades. >> reporter: about a dozen schools have expressed interest. initially, some people say it is hard to imagine a 7th-grader in with kids who are 17 or 18 years old. >> that is a difficult age. there is so much monitoring that they need. and if they get put in classes

the suburbs. we saw that this morning. paul in pepperell sending an e-mail. yes, a little bit of frost on the windshield. where is the ice scraper? it is that time of year, though. you start digging in for the sweaters and ice-scrapers. trying to find all of. that the coldest morning since may 16. both in boston and out there in worcester. it has been a while since it was this cold. almost as cool yesterday morning. a couple degrees warmer yesterday morning, another thing about the dry air mass, though, you look at the bounce-back. we have gone from 28-64 degrees in norwood in six hours. it does warm up quite nicely. we have a nice afternoon ahead of us. light breezes. the winds aren't as strong as they were yesterday. light breezes and mostly sunny skies. however, off to the west of us. showers across the eastern great lakes. back down into the ohio valley. this band of showers will be with us for the morning commute tomorrow. i do expect a little bit of

this upcoming week. that does feature some showers and drizzle and on-shore flow. a huge change-up in the pattern for us. again, morning showers tomorrow. even in the afternoon. there may be some that hold on tight here. down across buzzards bay, back across the cape and the islands. we will have to wait and see where that line sets up. from boston north and west, we will have a dry afternoon. there is a tropical wave out there in the atlantic. that's basically halfway between the lesser antilles andic high pressure banked to the of us. low pressure loops around the ohio valley and maybe down into the tennessee valley and back toward the mid-atlantic. it is not going anywhere any time soon later on in the week. with that in mind, we have a constant on-shore flow. low-level moisture working in. a round of showers working in. you take a look at the 7-day forecast, yes. we have rain-drop icons on it. doesn't mean it will rain the entire time.

>> kris: the curfew has been lifted in charlotte. protests continue there in response to the deadly-involved police shooting that happened in the city. protesters poured out into the streets sunday for a sixth straight night of demonstrations. earlier in the day, the national guard was called to bank of america stadium before the vikings took on the panthers at the game there. officers arrested one man for allegedly having a pistol and loaded magazine in his bag. but sundas did remain peaceful. >> christa: coming up on 7: it is campaign headed back to new hampshire where republican vice presidential nominee mike pence will be during tonight's debate. >> kris: up next, a new public tribute to those who are lost

deadcation for the victims of the boston marathon bombing. a new peace garden is meant to honor fbs all of the victims and survivors, the first responders. each victim has a sperj plaque with their name and a special symbol. boston mayor marty walsh was on hand for the opening as well. >> it is a beautiful, beautiful place to come. and it's being unveiled on a beautiful, beautiful day. and keeping smiles on our faces. >> christa: more than $100,000 was raised by the city of med and the friends of krystle campbell group in order to pay for that. >> it started out as a park bench. with all the donations it grew to a big project. >> christa: i heard about. that even was so generous with their time and talent. >> kris: so much more to come in the next half hour of 7 news. including the red sox.

>> i got a call at 3:00 in the morning saying there was a stabbing over at tremont street. and that no emerson students were injured but to stay clear of the area. stay where you were if you are in your dorm. that kind of thing. >> christa: police are searching for one suspect. and investigators know who they are looking for. >> kris: a weymouth woman shot by police. investigate wrors say she rep fused to drop a knife she was holding. and now she is also facing charges. here is nancy chen. >> nancy: >> she is on suicide watch. >> nancy: a relative o'. >> a woman shot by police talking off camera. she is emotional and upset as her relative fights for her life. >> she had cuts down her arms. they still shot her. >> nancy: weymouth police got the 911 call sunday morning for a mother asking for help with her suicidal daughter. that woman had a knife and refused to put it down when

officers opened fire. the 46-year-old was shot in the stomach. family members say she is expected to survive. but the tragic scene played out in front of people living in the community and neighbors say they are upset. >> i don't understand. wasn't the policeman in the street? and she was in her apartment. she had a knife. he had a gun. i just don't understand why it couldn't be defused. i'm emotional about it. i don't think she should have gotten shot. >> christa: police in new york are searching for a missing bostun his friends are desperately trying to find him. even handing out flyers in hopes of bringing him home safely. >> he has been sick for three years. he has needed our help a lot. but even when he is sick, i feel like when i have needed help, he is, like, the first person there. >> reporter: sack zachary, a music student at boston university, suffers from bipolar disorder. and is lost in new york. >> he is very overwhelmed by large crowds of people. which is worrisome that he is

show up that day. and then i was sure he was going to show up that night in the mid of night and i was going to get a phone call from the police that i could go see him in the hospital or somewhere. >> reporter: that hasn't happened. he was seen on the east side of manhattan last sunday around 5:00. he was in the city with a friend to pick up his instrument when he took off. >> he said that he needed to get into the hotel room so she could go to the bathroom. th away from the person who was taking care of him. they think they saw somebody matching his description wearing glasses the same color shirt, the same complexion sitting on one of these benches surrounding the lawn. >> this isn't confirmed. because none of us actually saw him. it is really the only lead that we have gotten. >> reporter: his family in indiana has been strapped with medical expense and can't make
