>> and round one in the race for the white house. >> anchor: the first presidential debate gets under way in a little less than 2 hours. tonight's stage on the campus of hov strat university in new york. this is the night donald trump and hillary clinton come face to face to debate for the first time. >> anchor: the stakes are high for both candidates. begin our team 7 coverage with dan hausle live on long dan. >> behind me you see ticket holders are in the exhibition hall. 4 years ago this was a scene where the moderator incorrectly corrected mitt romney. leading to whether the moderator would be fact checking again. it's up to the candidates to fact check themselves. any misstep here could have major consequences.

gets the first question. their campaign organizers and surrogates they've been running to any camera they can spinning anyway they can. many of them acting like bill belichick trying to build up the reputation of an opponent. we're live on long island dan hausle 7 news. >> anchor: dan, we know the amount of people watching this debate across the country is equivalent to the super bo. where will some of the names from both campaigns be watching tonight? >> reporter: running mate mike pence will be in the hall for donald trump. bill clinton will be accompanying hillary. we're not sure he's going to go into the hall. president obama says he won't be watching the debate. he usually has the tv on behind the scenes when he's working. usually it's monday night football.

the background instead. >> anchor: my comment about dan's tie earlier must have resonated. >> anchor: this debate will be back and forth for 90 minutes with no commercial breaks. >> anchor: what will each candidate have to do in that time that come up on top. andy hiller standing by with the debate killer instinct. >> reporter: i don't care how many debates hillary clinton has been in before. she's never been in one like there's never been one like this. this is more than a debate. it's a spectacle. a show. donald trump is the showman that could turn tonight into the oval office or coffin for his campaign. they both have dos and don'ts. calmly and with precision clinton needs to provoke trump into saying something he will forever regret. trump hates to be insulted. maybe call him little donny.

trust you when you come off as cold and entitled how about a smile. a real smile. for trump job number 1 is to convince voters he's fit to be president. if he ask acts dignified tonight his answer will be yes. >> i know politicians believe it or not better than you do. >> reporter: you know those faces trump makes during the debate. tonight leave them all in the green room. look good. just as there are opportunities. there are obstacles for clinton and trump. clinton must avoid getting into a skunk fight with trump. if she gets into one she will smell like one. which will hurt her. hillary cannot show sign of health problem. one coughing spell could cost her the white house.

anybody that would desecrate the american flag. it's something important to me. i hold it near and dear to my heart. >> reporter: the american flag was painted last summer by scott lebado who painted one flag on one vfw post across the country. >> there's no reason for that. >> reporter: detectives are busy searching for suspects. the police chief is anyone who bes anything in connection with this vandalism come forward. in revere steve cooper 7 news. >> anchor: following breaking news right now at 7. fire crews battling an intense wild fire stretching across 200 acres and threatening at least 300 structures. you are looking at santa cruz county in northern california not far from san jose.

during class using profanity and a racial slur and threatened to lynch her with an electrical cord. and reviewed thousands of documents. the investigation also raised concerns about 2 other racially charged incidents and the over all effectiveness to create an inclusive school environment for all students. under the agreement with the u.s. attorney's office boston publch mandatory training for students and staff. they'll hire a nondiscrimination officer responsible for monitoring complaints of harassment and conduct an annual survey of the racial climate of the school. here's reactions of parents and a student and the mayor in the months long finding in the investigation. >> we're going to look and check out. looking at your policies.

finding. for now live in boston amaka ubaka 7 news. >> anchor: and there's more news today weymouth police say they were forced to fire shooting a woman over the weekend. neighbors who saw it are questioning the officers actions. a woman called 911 yesterday saying her daughter was trying to kill herself with a knife. when an officer arrived they say a hysterical 46-year-old woman confront she had the knife in hand. she followed the officer waiving around the knife is when police officers shot her in the abdomen. >> she would never go after anyone. she would never go after a police officer or anybody. she was a tiny woman who had mental issues but not dangerous. >> anchor: the woman is recovering at the hospital this evening and she is charged with assault with a deadly weapon. >> anchor: the mbta with a new

>> massachusetts lawmakers raising awarenes out a brand new license plate. you see it says als 1 to raise awareness for als. >> anchor: the plates are the latest step in a national effort to try to find a cure. >> reporter: well state lawmakers say they're hoping to get people to step up to the plate. this campaign to fight the debilitating disease. the fight against als is hitting the road. >> anybody looking for a license

experts and families affected by the disease to have the first ever massachusetts als license plate. a local non-profit with a mission to find a treatment or cure for the disease by 2020. >> the most important thing is progress. this is a disease that as john fradies said that 75 years people have been trying to figure out the secrets. thanks i believe thanks to the ice bucket challenge there are things people are starting to realize about how this works. for people working for this for years is a hugely positive sign. >> reporter: pete fradies inspired the ice bucket challenge in 2014. his family says this is the next step towards a cure. >> we're honored to be here today. this will help raise the funds.
