>> christa: breaking news right now. at least one person is dead. as many as a hundred more injured after a commuter train slams into this station in new jersey. frightening moments unfolding during the morning rusher who in hoboken. witnesses say the train just did not the mangled train still partially on the tracks right now. just a scene of utter chaos. this all untolling at one of the busiest stations in the new york area. it is severely damaged, as you see right there. first responders racing to the scene. investigators trying to piece together exactly what sent the train off-course. >> sarah: now dozens of witnesses are describing the chaotic moment of impact. we have team coverage starting with nancy chen who is live in the newsroom with more. >> nancy: sarah and christa,

woman who died was on the platform and not in the train itself. meantime, up to a hundred people are injured with many of those critical. a look at the aftermath as the commuter train slammed into a new jersey terminal at the height of morning rush hour. people running for their lives in the midst of collapsed canopy and twisted metal. passengers reported the crowded train barreling into the train station at full speed. >> the train felt like it would never stop. it didn't slow down. it didn't bke >> nancy: hoboken was the last stop scheduled to arrive just after 8:30. >> there were approximately 250 people on the train this time of day. it was the 8:38 into hoboken. we are still determining the cause of the accident. i'm not going to stand here and guess. >> nancy: instead, people on the train and on the platform scrambled to get to safety. >> the people in front of me were badly injured. then we just heard people screaming in the first car. they were trapped. they couldn't get out.

managed to get us off of the scene, the doorway. >> nancy: people were evacuated through windows. >> people were stuck. they had to come out through the windows. the police were trying to rescue them. the conductor came off. he was completely blood idea. we noticed there were more injuries. >> nancy: one witness told cnn that the train's engineer was slumped over the control. something that will be investigated in the days to come. in the immediate aftermath, there are concerns of structural integrity with the terminal itself in s evacuated with trains detoured. nancy chen, 7 news. >> sarah: well, some of the most dramatic images we have seen were taken by a passenger on this train. >> christa: can you imagine being in his situation? once again, we know that all train service in the area is shut down. the n.t.s.b. investigating as well. we are going to talk about this man who shared his story with cnn. let's go to nicole oliverio. she has more on the eyewitness

sure that everyone around him was safe, he began taking video. he posted it on twitter. his video is horrifying. >> i was in the third car of the train. we crashed. and the lights went out. a few people screamed. i didn't see anybody completely hurt in the train in the third car. and then when we got out of the car, i could see that the front of the train, you know, the roof of the station, you know, had collapsed. and there was wires and water running down. a man walked past me. you know, wholing his arm. i saw some blood. you know, i don't want to describe too much. i think i'm still in shock a little bit. and then i made my way to the front. i noted a woman coming out of the second car, i believe who had, you know, sort of blood on her face. and then when i went to the

the front car, it was essentially off the rails and into the building of the station with the roof sort of collapsed. you know, around it. wires are hanging everywhere. and you know, i just noticed water sort of seeping down past the train. and the tracks. you know, some of the train station crew was the windows. the windows were crashed and mangled. i saw a person lying down in the first car. i'm hoping they are okay. next to the train. at that point, you know, they directed us away from the front car and you know, we left. they climbed up on to the train. again, back to the train tracks. on to the platform.

getting on to scene, i think. at which point, you know, there was a man, actually, kind of very agitated. i just remember one of the train crew telling him to calm down. he was yelling at them. telling them he was not going to calm down. it was pretty chaotic. let me tell you. people were just in shock. >> sarah: now, leon was in the third car. the worst injuries were to the passengers in the first car. leon says he is thankful he was sitting where he was. >> christa: this crash leaving so many people on edge. obviously, safety, a major concern now. especially for the commute home. >> sarah: cheryl fiandaca continues our team coverage live in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: well, we are learning more information from sources who say at this point, investigators do not believe this is an act of terrorism. sources say it appears, and we say this out of an abundance of caution, that this is some type of mechanical malfunction that caused this crash. it could be human error.

determined after a full investigation by the national transportation safety board. the agency has already sent a crew to the site. the black box along with passenger and crew accounts will help, but investigators put togethers a clear picture about how the train ended up slamming into this station. we know that new jersey transit train did not have what's called positive train control. that is the technology that automatically slows down trains before they go off the rails. the u.s. department of transportation report says new jersey transit has only done technology. according to the federal agency, positive train control technology must be in place for all of the country's railroads by the end of 2018. the lack of positive train control has been blamed for an amtrak train accident in philadelphia that left eight people dead. again, sources say a new jersey transit crash is not thought to be terrorism. but more of a mechanical or some type of malfunction.

of course, are flooded with victims from this crash. >> christa: the details of how many were hurt and how badly they are injured, that is still coming. in for the latest on that part of the story, we go to jonathan hall. >> reporter: well, right now we are counting up the injured at this point. it looks like the number is right around a hundred. that is a moving number that will continue to transition throughout the afternoon. some are said to be in critical condition. the good news from one of the busiest hospitals is that none of the injuries is life-threatening. the jersey city medical cen is caring for at least 50 people right now. some of them in critical condition. there are trauma surgeons and critical care nurses treating the most seriously injured. >> there are three serious patients with orthopedic injuries, internal injuries and lacerations that are being treated by trauma surgeons as we speak. in addition, there are a handful of other patients currently being evaluated for injuries. in the emergency room. approximately, 40 patients are

walk-in types of injuries. they are being evaluated as well. report t hospital's c.e.o. says while it has dozens to care for, the staffer is ready and able to help. >> all hands are on deck. with all our physicians and surgeons and specialty surgeons and specialty physicians as well as critical care nurses and we are well... we planned well. we actually are very much in gear to handle this type of emergency. >> reporter: this afternoon, the c.e.o. says he believes most of the injured cfr the platform. but he is unsure of the exact breakdown. live in the control room, jonathan hall, 7 news. >> sarah: investigators are asking how did that train operator end up barreling into the station? >> christa: a transit officer spoke out and said obviously, something must have been wrong here. with that part of the coverage, we go to byron barnett. >> reporter: well, obviously, it will be some time before we know exactly what caused this crash. two train employees who work on that train line and saw the

may have had some type of medical incident. >> you heard a boom. >> reporter: long-time freight engineer william blaine was right there when the train crashed into the hoboken, new jersey terminal. he says he has never seen anything like it before. a new jersey transit employee says it sounded like a bomb. >> it was right there in front of me. went through the bumper block. flew through the air. through the depot. and into... well, came to rest. >> reporter: both workers say because the train didn't even slow down as it came barreling into the terminal, they think something happened to the engineer operating the train. >> i can't speculate on what exactly happened and why he didn't stop in time. but apparently, he just... it may have been a medical condition. no one knows why. >> as an engineer for about 17 years, heart attack, maybe, he

that train never should have came in like that. period. nowhere near that. >> reporter: most of the injuries appeared to be in the first car. blaine says he thinks he saw a woman who was killed who was not on the train. >> the hardest part that hurts me is when i went to run in, i ended up stepping over a dead woman's body. that bothered me. i backed up and looked. nothing you can do for her. >> how far was she from the front of the train? >> she was on the side of the train, actually. to me, probably debris or something might have hit her. i don't think it was the train. she was on the... i don't believe she was on the train. >> reporter: mike larson said there was no way to get through the wreckage to get to the engineer after the crash. >> sarah: one of the most descriptive accounts is coming from a passenger in the first train car. we heard from her earlier in the show. here is more. >> i was standing at the door in between the first and

it was a little crowded. there wasn't enough space for everyone to get into the first car. so fortunately, i was stuck in the middle. myself and about six other people were in between the cars. we approached the station, and the train just felt like it never stopped. it didn't slow down. it didn't brake. i don't know for sure if it didn't brake or what was happening. so as soon as off. people started yelling. and the people standing in between on the other side on the second car, questioning ready to come out of the door, were thrown. on to our side. a young lady actually, that was thrown from that, she got her legs caught between the doors as soon as it was about to make that full stop. we were able to pull her up,

and the gentleman in front of me was helping other people. but he had a gash in his forehead. he hadn't known he was bleeding. i didn't fall, fortunately. there were people in front of me. >> christa: once again, a woman who was inside in the middle of one of those cars. we are going to continue to follow this breaking story throughout the afternoon. we want to let you know that john cuoco is on his way to new jersey right now. you can watch for his live reports this afternoon beginning first at 4:00. as we take ae hoboken, new jersey. the scene of the investigation that is unfolding today. >> sarah: all right. 12:12 right now. a disturbing scene in weymouth. a woman found in a roadside ravine. crews managed to pull her to safety. and now that woman is recovering in the hospital. >> christa: right now investigators are trying to figure out how she ended up there. victoria warren has been tracking that story for us. christa, weymouth police still have a lot of questions. they say they have a criminal

a possible sex assault investigation. but the reason they have so many questions, the woman at the center of all of this is not fully cooperating. now they are asking for the public's help. they want to hear from you if you may have seen anything suspicious. an 18-year-old woman found in a ravine in weymouth after she called 911. weymouth police using their sirens and calling out for her to find her. they pulled her out of some bushes to find her hands and ankles they brought her to the hospital. physically, police say she is okay. weymouth police say they are investigating this as a possible sex assault. but they still have to connect all the dots. they say the woman told them a man she had never met before wednesday dropped her off. it was unclear how she ended up in the ravine. the woman told them she does sometimes meet men through on-line web sites. weymouth police say her story was vague and she did not fully cooperate.

boston had some blue sky early this morning. once in a while, we will try to break some holes in the overcast this afternoon. a lot of sunshine was out along the massachusetts-new hampshire border. back across northern worcester county. much of the cloud cover right along the coastline. including much of southeastern massachusetts. this extends back through foxboro, southern worcester county, a good chunk of rhode island. once in a while, we will see some breaks try to work on into the overcast. you can see this clearing line. may catch you folks down across the cape t not saying it is going to be completely overcast. the brightest conditions north and west of 495. there is the soaking rain across the mid-atlantic. that is where it stays the last 24 hours. we will start to introduce the chance of showers working in. especially late afternoon into evening. this area of high pressure does loosen its grip across new england a little bit. you see more of the clouds.

i do expect some wet weather to end the week and to start the weekend. especially on saturday. on sunday, more scattered showers and some patches of drizzle around. not going to rain the entire time. at times, we will have these bouts of showers in areas... and areas of drizzle working. in tropical storm matthew expected to become a hurricane as it nears jamaica or just east of it. all right. 58-65 today. that's 65, northern worcester county. southern new hampshire we have most sun. we will hold close in boston. 58-6 o'0-degree range. overnight tonight, cool conditions. in the 40's. north and west of 495. 50-55 in the boston area. mostly cloudy skies prevailing on tomorrow. we will introduce the chance of rain as we get into tomorrow afternoon. some drizzle around. damp afternoon. scattered showers work in. especially late in the day. we will watch the weekend start offer on the wet side there on saturday morning.

>> sarah: officials in south carolina are continuing to investigate after a terrifying shooting at an elementary school. a teen opened fire, hitting two students and a teacher. >> christa: now some heroes are being recognized for their bravery amid this violence. a desperate search for a motive after shots ring out at recess. in south carolina, police say a 14-year-old opened fire, wounding two young students and a teacher before unarmed volunteer firefighter stepped in and tackled him. >> we have a gun on the playground. we are going to try to keep everyone away from here. >> christa: first police say the teenager shot his father at home two miles away. then he called his grandmother in tears. >> she could not make out what he was saying. he was crying and upset. report a minute later, police say the gunman had driven up to the parking lot near the playground, gotten out, walked toward the school and started shooting. the superintendent says one class was at recess.

was hit in the shoulder. she and other employees rushed students inside and locked the doors. >> i mean, these teachers and staff members love those children. they put their lives on the line to protect them. >> christa: six-year-old jacob hall is in critical condition after being shot in the leg. the teacher and other student injured have been treatsed and released. >> what do investigators think is the motive here? >> we really don't have any information >> christa: the community is shaken. terrified parents scrambled to pick up their kids. jamie's daughter is in kindergarten. the she told me they went to the bathroom. i was so scared. i don't want her to go to school now. >> christa: once again, police not identifying the 14-year-old gunman. only saying that he was home-schooled. it is not clear if the teen had any connection at all to the elementary school fbs.

and struck her. she wasn't on the train. i don't believe she was. >> reporter: now, when asked if anyone had spoken to the engineer, a new jersey transit employee mike larson said there was no way to get the engineer through all that wreckage. >> christa: we continue to get more eyewitness accounts of what happened. a passenger in the second car speaking to ms-nbc just a short time ago. >> i boarded this train way to the office. the usual journey, basically. the train didn't stop. i was in the second car, luckily. but i usually, am at the back of the second car. but because there were a lot of people today, i had to be in the front of the second car. and as soon as the train went into the platform, we were all thrown off.

>> no, i have not. >> reporter: stump will now appear before the house financial services committee on capitol hill. >> i think a number of laws potentially could have been violated here. our business in government is to make sure that not just the bank but the individuals who are responsible are held accountable to the full extent of the law. reporth in california, the state treasurer suspending government business with wells fargo for at least one year. potentially costing the bank millions of dollars. >> how can my office continue to entrust the public's money shown such little regard for legions of californians... earlier this month, wells fargo admitted it created as many as two million fake accounts to meet aggressive sales targets. sticking customers like franklin with improper fees.

it was very frustrating. these are accounts i never opened. >> reporter: inside the bank, the board of directors launching an independent investigation. during which the c.e.o. will not be paid a salary. >> a lot of his answers were incomplete. he didn't have a lot of answers. so the american people want to know how did this happen? >> christa: right now we have new details about a police shooting of an african-american man in southern california. investigators say the man was pointing an e-cigarette a shot and killed him on tuesday. police say the 38-year-old held the e-cigarette in what they call a shooting stance. there was another night of protesting in el cajon. a fight over a donald trump hat leading to an outburst of violence from protesters. both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. >> sarah: security is tight in jerusalem ahead of the funeral of former israeli president shimon peres. the funeral is expected to be the largest gathering in israel since the funeral of

shimon peres died wednesday from complications following a stroke. he was 93 years old. his body was brought to israel's parliament for people to pay their last respects today. israel's president and prime minister laid wreaths at his casket this morning. president obama and former president bill clinton will attend his funeral tomorrow in jerusalem. >> christa: still ahead, strong winds ripping through parts of australia. the damage leaving hundreds without power. >> sarah: why doctors are now worried about the dangers of soccer. >> chris: strong on-shore breeze again today. another cool fall-like day with gray skies.
