woman who died was on the platform and not in the train itself. meantime, up to a hundred people are injured with many of those critical. a look at the aftermath as the commuter train slammed into a new jersey terminal at the height of morning rush hour. people running for their lives in the midst of collapsed canopy and twisted metal. passengers reported the crowded train barreling into the train station at full speed. >> the train felt like it would never stop. it didn't slow down. it didn't bke >> nancy: hoboken was the last stop scheduled to arrive just after 8:30. >> there were approximately 250 people on the train this time of day. it was the 8:38 into hoboken. we are still determining the cause of the accident. i'm not going to stand here and guess. >> nancy: instead, people on the train and on the platform scrambled to get to safety. >> the people in front of me were badly injured. then we just heard people screaming in the first car. they were trapped. they couldn't get out.

managed to get us off of the scene, the doorway. >> nancy: people were evacuated through windows. >> people were stuck. they had to come out through the windows. the police were trying to rescue them. the conductor came off. he was completely blood idea. we noticed there were more injuries. >> nancy: one witness told cnn that the train's engineer was slumped over the control. something that will be investigated in the days to come. in the immediate aftermath, there are concerns of structural integrity with the terminal itself in s evacuated with trains detoured. nancy chen, 7 news. >> sarah: well, some of the most dramatic images we have seen were taken by a passenger on this train. >> christa: can you imagine being in his situation? once again, we know that all train service in the area is shut down. the n.t.s.b. investigating as well. we are going to talk about this man who shared his story with cnn. let's go to nicole oliverio. she has more on the eyewitness

sure that everyone around him was safe, he began taking video. he posted it on twitter. his video is horrifying. >> i was in the third car of the train. we crashed. and the lights went out. a few people screamed. i didn't see anybody completely hurt in the train in the third car. and then when we got out of the car, i could see that the front of the train, you know, the roof of the station, you know, had collapsed. and there was wires and water running down. a man walked past me. you know, wholing his arm. i saw some blood. you know, i don't want to describe too much. i think i'm still in shock a little bit. and then i made my way to the front. i noted a woman coming out of the second car, i believe who had, you know, sort of blood on her face. and then when i went to the

the front car, it was essentially off the rails and into the building of the station with the roof sort of collapsed. you know, around it. wires are hanging everywhere. and you know, i just noticed water sort of seeping down past the train. and the tracks. you know, some of the train station crew was the windows. the windows were crashed and mangled. i saw a person lying down in the first car. i'm hoping they are okay. next to the train. at that point, you know, they directed us away from the front car and you know, we left. they climbed up on to the train. again, back to the train tracks. on to the platform.

getting on to scene, i think. at which point, you know, there was a man, actually, kind of very agitated. i just remember one of the train crew telling him to calm down. he was yelling at them. telling them he was not going to calm down. it was pretty chaotic. let me tell you. people were just in shock. >> sarah: now, leon was in the third car. the worst injuries were to the passengers in the first car. leon says he is thankful he was sitting where he was. >> christa: this crash leaving so many people on edge. obviously, safety, a major concern now. especially for the commute home. >> sarah: cheryl fiandaca continues our team coverage live in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: well, we are learning more information from sources who say at this point, investigators do not believe this is an act of terrorism. sources say it appears, and we say this out of an abundance of caution, that this is some type of mechanical malfunction that caused this crash. it could be human error.

determined after a full investigation by the national transportation safety board. the agency has already sent a crew to the site. the black box along with passenger and crew accounts will help, but investigators put togethers a clear picture about how the train ended up slamming into this station. we know that new jersey transit train did not have what's called positive train control. that is the technology that automatically slows down trains before they go off the rails. the u.s. department of transportation report says new jersey transit has only done technology. according to the federal agency, positive train control technology must be in place for all of the country's railroads by the end of 2018. the lack of positive train control has been blamed for an amtrak train accident in philadelphia that left eight people dead. again, sources say a new jersey transit crash is not thought to be terrorism. but more of a mechanical or some type of malfunction.

of course, are flooded with victims from this crash. >> christa: the details of how many were hurt and how badly they are injured, that is still coming. in for the latest on that part of the story, we go to jonathan hall. >> reporter: well, right now we are counting up the injured at this point. it looks like the number is right around a hundred. that is a moving number that will continue to transition throughout the afternoon. some are said to be in critical condition. the good news from one of the busiest hospitals is that none of the injuries is life-threatening. the jersey city medical cen is caring for at least 50 people right now. some of them in critical condition. there are trauma surgeons and critical care nurses treating the most seriously injured. >> there are three serious patients with orthopedic injuries, internal injuries and lacerations that are being treated by trauma surgeons as we speak. in addition, there are a handful of other patients currently being evaluated for injuries. in the emergency room. approximately, 40 patients are

walk-in types of injuries. they are being evaluated as well. report t hospital's c.e.o. says while it has dozens to care for, the staffer is ready and able to help. >> all hands are on deck. with all our physicians and surgeons and specialty surgeons and specialty physicians as well as critical care nurses and we are well... we planned well. we actually are very much in gear to handle this type of emergency. >> reporter: this afternoon, the c.e.o. says he believes most of the injured cfr the platform. but he is unsure of the exact breakdown. live in the control room, jonathan hall, 7 news. >> sarah: investigators are asking how did that train operator end up barreling into the station? >> christa: a transit officer spoke out and said obviously, something must have been wrong here. with that part of the coverage, we go to byron barnett. >> reporter: well, obviously, it will be some time before we know exactly what caused this crash. two train employees who work on that train line and saw the

it was a little crowded. there wasn't enough space for everyone to get into the first car. so fortunately, i was stuck in the middle. myself and about six other people were in between the cars. we approached the station, and the train just felt like it never stopped. it didn't slow down. it didn't brake. i don't know for sure if it didn't brake or what was happening. so as soon as off. people started yelling. and the people standing in between on the other side on the second car, questioning ready to come out of the door, were thrown. on to our side. a young lady actually, that was thrown from that, she got her legs caught between the doors as soon as it was about to make that full stop. we were able to pull her up,

a possible sex assault investigation. but the reason they have so many questions, the woman at the center of all of this is not fully cooperating. now they are asking for the public's help. they want to hear from you if you may have seen anything suspicious. an 18-year-old woman found in a ravine in weymouth after she called 911. weymouth police using their sirens and calling out for her to find her. they pulled her out of some bushes to find her hands and ankles they brought her to the hospital. physically, police say she is okay. weymouth police say they are investigating this as a possible sex assault. but they still have to connect all the dots. they say the woman told them a man she had never met before wednesday dropped her off. it was unclear how she ended up in the ravine. the woman told them she does sometimes meet men through on-line web sites. weymouth police say her story was vague and she did not fully cooperate.

talking about the fact that all trains in the u.s. have to be outfitted with that, essentially, back-up system by the year 2018. so very interesting that they are bringing that to the forefront. we will be right back after
