jersey new jersey. we are hearing that train station just reopened. >> reporter: that's right. according to wnbc in new york, the train station is reopen. this new jersey transit train never slowed eaching the hoboken station where i sigh this massive presence. crashed through a barrier, jumped the track, and slammed into a wall. >> reporter: witnesses say things went from calm to chaos in an instant. >> there was a haze of smoke. and then everything was dusty and dirty, and people started crying, a few screaming. >> reporter: happened during rush hour, just before 9:00 at one of the wisiest train stations in the new york area. passengers say a new jersey transit train approaching the final stop never slowed entering the station. >> he came in at a high rate of

difficulties] more than one hundred were injured. police say passengers all raced to help as the walking wounded made their way to safety. >> calgary came down, people were buried under the me to somebody else through the window. >> investigators scrambled to figure out what went wrong. whether the crash could have been prevented. >> the train came in too high a rate of speed. and the question is why is that? >> the ntsb is here to help answer that question. >> anchor: new jersey governor chris christie says the train engineer survived and is cooperating. we're live, john cocoa, 7 news

like this has happened at the station. do you know anything about how these 2 situations can compare? >> reporter: that's right. in 2011, there was a similar crash on mother's day where dozens of people were injured. >> anchor: all right. john reporting live in new jersey. thank you so much. we're going to check back in again with john coming up at 6:00. >> anchor: so as we said, the train crashed through a barrier, jumped the track, and slammed off the rails. some of the most dramatic video we have seen was shot by a passenger on the train. he shared a story with cnn. we have mother of -- more of his video. >> capturing the purchase destruction. >> crashed, and the lights went out, a few people screamed. we got out of the car. i could see that the front of the train, the roof of the

and there was wires and waters were running down. >> a passenger in the third car managed to take this video. you can see the twist metal, one of the cars ripped apart. transit workers trying to reach the people inside. and you can faintly hear the screams for help. >> some of the train station crew was looking into the windows. the windows were all mangled, crashed, in the first car. i think i saw you think i'm hoping they're okay. there was woman who had blood only her face. and then when i went to the front, the first car, i think, the front car was off the rails into the -- on the track station. and into the building of the station with the roof sort of

point he was directed away from the front car. he had to climb on to the platform as he listened to crews tell everyone to calm down. he said he wasn't near a window so doesn't know what happened. only that the train never slowed down. >> it didn't slow down. definitely didn't. there was no brakes. just crash. >> the most severe injuries were to the passengers in the first car so leon said he's thankful he was sitting in the third. in the news room, nicole oliverio, 7 news. >>nc train that crashed was not equipped with a system that had i'd meant to prevent trains from slamming into stations or derail. the technology is called the positive train control. as ryan schulteis is hear with more about that. >> reporter: the technology is designed to slow down trains when they exceed the speed limit on certain stretches of track near stations or dangerous curves, the nation's railroads were supposed to have the system in place by the end of 2015.

of hanson, two suspects in custody after three schools were told to shelter in place earlier. police are searching for 2 more suspects. officials say the schools were ordered to shelter in place as a precaution earlier. police have not said why the 4 suspects are wanted. >> there is developing news now from weymouth. police say a woman found in a revine was not the victim of an assault. her story, now says she was not attacked m police continue to investigate but say there is no reason for the public to be concerned. >> anchor: there is more news hear, a disturbing display outside of newton north high school a group of students waiving a confederate car from a car in a school parking lot. police are getting involved. let's get to jonathan hall to tell us more about what happened and the response. >> reporter: newton police are investigating this incident.

but the students will face some sort of school discipline which the superintendent will not discuss. >> a student posted this quick video to facebook, shows a red car with a person in the passenger seat displaying a large confederate flag out the window. >> we had an announcement near the end of school. i was more or less completely mored that especially since we have a the verse, very diverse community here. i'm very surprised tha action. >> the car was circling the driveway on tuesday. >> it was four students in a car. those students after a quick investigation were identified. >> the video just 3 or 4 seconds long has gone viral. people wonder what's going on at newton north. >> we're an upstanding community, when incidences like this disprove it. i'm ashamed. >> anchor: parents got a letter from the principal assuring them the deeply

taken seriously. the superintendent says the kids in the car might have a right to freedom of speech, but they violated the student code of conduct which said students have a right to go to school free of harassment and bias. >> we cannot comment on student discipline, but the administrators at newton north high school have interviewed the students. after an incident like this, we want to make sure all students know that this is not the environment that we want. we do not tolerate these acts of discrimination, and students are really upset >> students and teach you ares are meeting in small groups this week to discuss the importance of racial tolerance. we did reach out to the 17-year old senior who shot that video on his cell phone. at this point, he doesn't want to speak on camera. we're live, jonathan hall, 7 news. >> counting down to the election, 40 days until voters voice their choice. today hillary clinton and donald trump focusing on those battleground states. >> the republican nominee in new

a south carolina firefighter, the situation could have been a lot worse. he tackled the teenage gunman holding him down until police arrived. >> investigators are working to determine a motive. >> the pictures are too familiar. parents holding children, armed officers surrounding campus, another school shootering, this one, townville elementary school in south carolina. the 14-year old in custody. >> they went to the bathroom. she was glad she dent get shot. >> a teacher and two bullets. a volunteer firefighter, one of the first on scene is hailed a hero for taking the shooter down. the fire chief spoke for him. >> my reaction to yesterday's event was no different than nay other fire or law enforcement personnel. >> quick thinking well trained teachers are also getting praise for saving lives. >> the teachers and staff of the town hall elementary school who

saturday. low pressure drifts closer to pennsylvania, to new england. chances of rain goes up but we're dry overnight. partly cloudy, cool. mid 40s to low 50s. through the today, a little bit of sun early. then a lot of clouds through the afternoon. and i think a couple of scattered showers likely, especially the further south you are. morning commute is dry. not a bad idea to have the rain gear. probably stays on stand by for most of the day. may be one or two showers that wo late afternoon. by 5:00 p.m., the evening commute, a higher chance of a few scattered showers. then we'll have rain, a good shot into new england tomorrow through the day on saturday. so saturday does look like it's washed out. i thought there might be a little bit of break in the action with the rain. it will be on and off rain for most of the day saturday. it doesn't move that much sunday, although the batch of rain moves away. sunday will feature clouds but not much in the way of rain.

sunday, off chance to get them accomplished. if you hope for sun, i can't offer that. the good news here, tomorrow night through saturday finally beneficial rain. don't mean hit or miss isolated showers, i think a lot of us have the likelihood of an inch, maybe in some locations we're talking to closer to 2-inches of rain tomorrow and saturday. further south, this is hurricane matthew, this wasra category 1. this is a brand new track from the hurricane center. it continues on that westward path for the next couple days, then begins to drift northeast of jamaica air strikes cross cuba early next week. it is a category 2 moving through the bahamas. from there it's a difficult forecast. we think matthew will be down in this location wednesday and thursday, and then the question is, does the jet stream kick it
