needed an internal investigation. the chief was placed on administrative leave in september. no one said why. >> anchor: an attorney for the chief is speaking out about allegations. amaka ubaka live in gloucester with all the details. >> reporter: ryan, the mayor said it came down to the chief lying and deleting critical evidence on his cell phone. the chief's attorney says this investigation is really just a witch hunt. >> unethical and unacceptable. >> reporter: fired after an internal investigation. the city's mayor says this began last month when 2 women made allegations against leonard campenello. >> disturbing allegations regarding chief campenello's behavior during their relationship. she expressed concerns for her

contacted this office she had concerns about an alleged relationship with the chief and a third woman. >> reporter: it wasn't the complaints of those women that led to the termination. during the investigation the chief destroyed cell phone evidence and lied to investigators about someone stealing a cell phone. >> integrity is number one requirement of police officers and especially the chief of police. >> reporter: which puts addicts in treatment instead behind bars. today the chief says he's put more than 500 addicts in treatment. he'll fight his termination. >> the chief is disappointed by termination and strongly believes it is without justification. this investigation has been a witch hunt from the beginning. the reasons given by the city had nothing to do with the original inquiry they were conducting. >> reporter: now the mayor says

eye. 35 miles out from the eye. that eye 15 miles wide. you see it slowly moving. a powerful storm to the north. some of those impacts hurricane force wind as i mentioned. haiti could see 15 to 25 inches of rain. and locally 40 inches. that's hard to imagine. storm surge 7 to 15 foot waves expected. that's up through the bahamas. from center 140 miles per hour winds right now tracking north at 7 miles per hour. it doesn't have a lot of opportunity to lose any steam. still expected to maintain category 4 strength as it tracks into the bahamas. drops down to a category 3 but still a major hurricane. tries to hug the coastline at the southeastern united states. you have to keep in mind that this cone of uncertainty anywhere along that cone that

we did stay dry inside of 495 eastern massachusetts. those scattered showers through the central part of the common wealth and sliding into the western half of the state. we will continue to see that shower activity move off in that direction. south southwest. there were heavy downpours in here as they've slid on through. they don't last for long. they can amount to a lot. there was a report in warren of 1.7 inches of afternoon. running through the timeline you see the clouds start to move in on us. wake up tomorrow morning not this again. foggy cloudy drizzly gloomy it does improve into the afternoon. we break the sunshine out for most of us. lingering cloud cover and drizzle across the south shore, cape cod and the islands. mostly cloudy 50 to 54.

late in the day. a touch cooler than today. here's the bigger picture for you. high pressure will take control for us. that's great it means we get sunshine in here. the flow around the high will keep an on shore wind with us at least a breeze for the next couple of days. now latest on matthew 140 miles per hour winds. still a category 4 storm. not a lot has changed through the day today. it slowly haiti and through cuba. not enough to slow it down. not enough sheer. and we're into warm ocean water here. it maintains category 3 strength as it tracks through the bahamas. this is the latest update from the national hurricane center. this is the cone of error or uncertainty. you hear that a lot. not a swath of where this storm is expected to impact.
