>> up governor there declaring a state of emergency. the latest advisory came down just about a half hour ago. matthew is a category 4 storm with winds at 140 miles per hou. let's head over to jeremy reiner for the latest on the storm's track. >> you can see there is the eye wall, the center of the hurricane. hurricane matthew, in fact a bit of a double eye structure. it's got two of them, which is the signal of a very powerful hurricane. and the outer bands of the east coast here of florida. fort lauderdale as well as miami with winds at times gusting around 35, 40 miles per hour. but look at the eye call coming into freeport. when we talk about maximum sustained winds at 140 miles an hour you found it right there in the eye wall. so it's possible we may be talking winds 120, 140 miles per hour about to rip over freeport

folks. >> east coast of florida after moving over freeport, then it does head toward the east coast of florida perhaps near fort pierce, after midnight tonight it's not quite known if it will technically make a landfall, the eye comes on land, the eye wall itself will be very close to lad and that's again where you find the strong wind. also very heavy rain along the 5 corridor. rainfall tallies, miami proper not too bad, 2 inches of rain, but north of perhaps 9 inches of rain through tomorrow night and into saturday morning. >> authorities of the caribbean left to pick up the pieces after hurricane matthew left a pile of destruction there. >> bri eggers is here with a closer look at the damage. >> they're starting to feel the effects of the storm in south florida and people have spent te last 24 hours there preparing fr it. mandatory evacuation orders are in place for several counties with voluntary evacuations for many others and the governor of

be a deadly storm. the bahamas also hit very hard y matthew today. you can see the strong winds blowing, knocking down trees in nassau were wind speeds rose to 140 miles per hour as the storm became a category 4 over the islands as j.r. was just explaining and so far haiti has been the hardest hit where more than 100 people have been killed by the storm. more than 350,000 people need immediate assistance after the storm destroyed their homes. aid workers are still since communication is down in some of those areas. and president obama has already declared a federal disaster in florida and national guard troos are being sent into help. in the newsroom, i'm meteorologist bri eggers, 7news. >> some people in florida partly cloudy up -- packing up and heading out. >> not everyone is doing up. robin simmons is live in fort lauderdale. i understand the rain is startig

off and on all day long. take a look. that is not deterring people frm coming out. some with their pets, some with their surf boards. we've seen people preparing for the storm for the past several days. school canceled for hundreds of thousands of students for thursday and friday ahead of the storm. it is looking like we are going to dodge the most serious impacs of this hurricane here in this part of south florida, but of course farther to our north they are going to the more difficult effects, but family have been coming out, taking advantage of the waves, even though authorities want people to stay away. there will not be anyone to come in and rescue anyone who finds themselves having trouble in the water, but, again, we're dealing with some of the squall weather, a lot of rain, but the really serious impacts of hurricane matthew are not going to be hitting this part of south florida. for now reporting live near fort lauderdale, florida. robin simmons, 7news.

when we talk about category 4 winds, 140 miles per hour winds you find them in the eye wall ad the eye wall is absolutely pumml ing freeport at this time. you also notice if you -- let's see if i can back this up here. watch how it takes a little shit to the west. it's kind of wobbling around and that's typical with these powerhouse hurricanes, because one side of the eye wall with te heavy wind and on the southe there's not as much, so the weight of the storm is not eveny distributed, but the general motion continues off to the northwest. at about 13 to 14 miles per hou. winds right now, again with some of these outer bands clipping te east coast of florida, not up bad. miami international, gusts of 30 miles per hour. it's been knocked off the grid s has nassau and that's probably going to be the case for several weeks now.

anticipated, approaching the florida coastline, especially north of west palm beach later n tonight and early tomorrow morning. melbourne, in particular you see this deep shading, that's at least 74 mile-per-hour winds. hurricane-force winds and up rides the coast overnight tonigt through tomorrow morning. the space coast and then up through jacksonville. granted it's getting a little bits smaller as it's kind of wobbling between ocean and land, weakening somewhat, but several hours and several miles where you're talking hurricane-force again initially with the eye wal approaching the space coast, cae canaveral, titusville, winds perhaps over 100 miles per hour. all the storm driving a lot of water toward the florida coastline. granted the search is not as powerful with the nor'easter asa category 4 hurricane. miami metro 1 to 3-foot surge ad

freeport in the bahamas for the last 30 to 45 minutes. when we talk about a category 4 form and winds at 140 miles per hour you find it right there in the eye wall. it's conceivable up we just had 140 mile-per-hour winds rip across the city of freeport within the last 30 to 45 minute. devastating to say the least. from there it does continue to move northwest toward the east coast of florida later on tonight. these are one of our computer models here and a lot of warm colors indicating the heavy bans of rain and that's also where yu nd heavy bands of rain. here is the eye wall approaching fort pierce around midnight tonight and from there it looks like it's going to parallel the florida coastline overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow. still maintaining hurricane status. it likely weakens from a categoy 4 down to a category 2 storm. but still talking about several hours of destructive wind on the east coast of florida. west palm beach winds will intensify overnight tonight.
