carolinas. >> this rough now god help us. >> anchor: hurricane matthew is moving in. the wind starting to pick up. here is a live look at palm beach florida along the coast of the sunshine state. matthew is barreling up florida's east coast now. >> anchor: for those who did not listen to the warnings to evacuate it's going to be a long and dangerous night. the storm surge threatening hundreds of miles of florida's coastline. many people have others choosing to ride it out. >> anchor: bands of wind and rain ripping across that chain of islands. so where is the storm headed next? let's get started on team 7 coverage. >> reporter: moving through the bahamas at this time. the center of the storm passing over free port ba hama. west palm beach through ft. lauderdale miami between outer bands. these rotate around this storm

these outer bands slap and work down the florida coast. when we talk about maximum sustained winds at 140 miles an hour we're focussed on the eye wall. going on for an hour as the eye wall passing across free port looping around with the strongest winds. from there it looks like it's going to continue to head in the north westerly fashion north of the outer bands along the coastline producing gusts. later on tonight fort pierce in particular midnight tonight and from there it parallels the east coast of florida. traveling right up interstate 95. we're going to have several hours of hurricane force winds. several hours of 80 miles an hour winds as high as 120 miles per hour. late tonight and through the day

from the hurricane center the deep shade in red indicating where we have the strongest winds. it's not a large storm. the west coast of florida napeles, myers, saint pete, through the keys hardly any wind overnight. focussed on the east coast of florida. devastating damaging wind and also very heavy rain. anywhere from 6 to 8 inches of rain. that is wind coming out of the the coastline. a storm surge of 7 to 11 feet possible. melbourne north up to charleston south carolina that looks like a problem. the shape of the coastline here with the water coming in can't escape. more soap tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night it georgia as well as south carolina. >> anchor: the window to actually prepare for the storm has closed.

off the roads. >> reporter: kim, at this hour officials in florida are urging people to stay off the roads. conditions deteriorating. the governor says those who do not he'd warnings are risking their lives. >> the storm will kill you. time is running out. >> reporter: rick scott is not messing around and neither is hurricane matthew. the category 4 hurricane the caribbean most in haiti. packing sustained winds of 140 miles per hour. it's next stop is the florida coast. expected to make land fall early friday. >> there are no excuses. you need to leave. evacuate evacuate evacuate. >> reporter: 2 million people in matthew's path are being told to get out of the way. it's the largest mandatory

sandy in 2012. officials are warning people the storm could cut powers to millions for days. first responders may not be there to help. >> there's a point in time where we have to cease services because it will be putting first responders lives in danger because they haven't he'ded the call. >> reporter: and long lines at gas stations. >> it is time to be prepared. preparing to have the fuel i need for at least a week. >> reporter: coastal counties in georgia are evacuated today. nicky haley says quarter million people have gone inland so far and 200,000 could leave today. airports in ft. lauderdale and miami have closed. thousands of flights cancelled ahead of the monster storm. national guard troops are standing by bracing for the

beach which we've seen operational by the coast are for emergency personnel or the media. people are taking these warnings very seriously. >> anchor: all right. thank you for that. go further south now. team 7 coverage continues in melbourne beach florida. nickel inslada is there looking at conditions. nicole. >> reporter: melbourne is south of cape canav rel. meteorologists here seem to be thinking the land fall will be in this vicinity perhaps north. since we've been here couple hours or so things have gotten a bit worse. you see the wind here that is blowing these trees. on the surface it doesn't look that bad. it has gotten worse over the last few hours. we are expecting it to deteriorate more in the evening

we've been speaking to boat owners. this is an area that normally has a high water level. they've come out here. many of them have tried to secure their boats for storm conditions. they worry because the water level here is fairly high that a storm surge could make things worse in terms of their boats. many folks say they are pessimistic about what matthew will bring. they say that they water level might get so high. the wind levels might get high enough that these boats might be fairly damaged at the end of all of this. hard to believe when you see how relatively calm things are right now. folks in central florida haven't had top deal with any sort of hurricane like this since 2004, 2005. that really that bad.

>> machine mayhem in boden new hampshire. a man accused of attacking his brother with a front end loader. >> anchor: it landed him in handcuffs. steve cooper with more from new hampshire. >> reporter: 54-year-old peter o manuel his arraignment. charges he attacked his brother at his family's i cycling business in new hampshire. >> ended up using that front end loader to push over the crane. >> [inaudible]. >> hold on mr. emmanuel. >> reporter: even after the suspect rammed the front end loader into the crane his brother was operating causing

over. and emmanuel wasn't done yet. police say he tried to crash into one of their cruisers before he jumped into a trash truck and took off. >> i never say never. >> reporter: police arrested emmanuel a short time later. in court he appeared agitated at the high bail that was set. >> i think that is a ridiculous sum of money. >> reporter: a family leaving the court wasn't interested in talking about what happened. >> i don't feel comfortable talking about this. it's a conflict of interest for me that i represent both brothers and their company. >> reporter: everybody was okay. >> we were able to come to a successful conclusion. now we're going to let the court system work and see what happens. >> reporter: what remains unclear right now is the motive for this. as for emmanuels bail that was

steve cooper 7 news. >> now 7 weather with chief meteorologist jeremy reiner. >> reporter: here is the hurricane right here. the eye wall moving cross free port within the last couple of hours. florida we have the outer bands rotating around the center of the storm in west palm beach south toward miami. this core of the storm that continues to head northwest toward after midnight tonight. wind speeds coming from a computer model the european model which is very accurate. the warm colors indicating where we have winds over 70 miles per hour. and then that ramps up between 95 and close to 100 miles per hour after midnight tonight. that's a signature that the eye wall is getting close if not

daytona beach. and even though there's a slight weakening tomorrow afternoon. when you're talking 85 to 90 miles per hour winds palm coast as well as saint augustine that's significant. the storm surge is a concern as well. farther north fort pierce along so forth of sebastian inlet it gets serious. a 7 to 11 foot storm surge coastline. we talked about this earlier the shape of the coastline works against them. georgia and south carolina and charleston as well on saturday. and early tomorrow morning category 4 storm perhaps it makes land fall. if it does it will be the first category 4 storm in florida since charlie in 2004.
