from high above, that's ground level, right there, alot of the damage. i mean that building is torn apart. roofs on the ground, all coming from the storm. >> wind the big issue. nicole is in daytona beach with much more on the swaying there, nicole. reporter: i want to first give you a little bad news, first, we have learned that a woman in deland florida, volusia county has died as a result of this storm. she piece of falling debris, a piece of a tree landed on her. i want to show you something else. this right here. east international speed way boulevard. this is where we are. this demonstrates what officials have been talking about. this is very heavy, if you imagined something like that hit you if you were out washingtoning around during all of this, you would be seriously injured at the very least.

>> parts of florida are recovering, georgia and south carolina are preparing. reporter: hurricane matthew continues to pound florida and head towards other coastal states. here, you can see a home that caught fire after being hit by matthew. this is one of many homes and buildings destroyed by the storm. this is storm surge washing up at a 15 inches of rain and storm surges up to 9 feet are possible in some areas, saint augustine, some roads are so flooded by rain and salt water, they are impassable. georgia is bracing for the storm, more than 5 hundred thousand people are under a mac order mandatory

reporter: this was one dramatic moment, behind us, a van was at the top of the hill, now, the police say the driver that got out, left the car running, suddenly, the car was going down through an intersection, down this roadway before it struck the stairs in front of this house. just a very, very strange incident. reporter: residents recounting when a run away

careening down here before plowing into this man's front steps. >> my wife just left. the bus stop is just up the street. reporter: the driver with the co-worker in a passenger's seat stopped on a steep hill and got out. instead of putting the van in park, he left it in drive and the van hit the road. >> when he tried to get back in when he realized it was still in drive, he by the door and my understanding he may have been run over. reporter: we caught up with the driver at the hospital with bandages on his hand. his colleague suffered are more serious back injury. reporter: you are okay? >> yeah, okay. reporter: inspectores were able to determine the house was structurally okay. some neighbors thankful the street wasn't filled with kids.
