his wife, a 77-year-old joanna fisher stabbed and left grievously injured. fisher's son spoke with 7 news last week and had this to say about the suspects who carried out the attack on the elderly couple. >> they are obviously cowards. and i can't wait to meet them. >> authorities here will now work to bring the suspects back to massachusetts from virginia. 23-year-old joshua hart and 27-year-old britney smith both from athol were arrested yesterday. also found in virginia, the stolen from the couple's home in orange. people who knew the couple struggling to understand why. hardy climbed mountains into his 90's. his wife was in a wheelchair and needed assistance. both beloved by neighbors and family. and the two suspects are being held without bail right now. >> another story we are following today: police are searching for the person who shot a child in roxbury on

this nine-year-old girl was on a playground while her family was celebrating nearby. we are live with the very latest on this investigation. also, that child's condition. >> yeah, kris. police say this was a senseless shooting. they say they are going to do everything in their power to find the person who is responsible. she was shot right here at this playground. as you said, thankfully, she is expected to recover. a shooting of a nine-year-old girl has left neighbors shaken. >> shot guns. you know, like, like, boom, boom. gunshots. boom, boom, boom. like, five of them. which is sad. we are supposed to be living in a good area. >> the girl caught in the cross-fire after being hit by a stray bullet. this happened early sunday morning in roxbury. police say there was some sort of party going on in the adjacent parking lot. and the girl was playing on

>> anchor: all right. a holiday monday. columbus day. a live look outside. the sun there shining. it is warming things up a little bit, chris. a really chilly start to the day. >> chris: what the sun is giving us, the wind is taking away, kris. we will get close to 60 this afternoon. we were close to 60 in terms of-mile-per-hour with the wind speeds yesterday from nantucket over to the vineyard. rockport had a gust of 51. barnstable, at 47. we had the rain. we had the wind. in some cases, close to three inches of rain. north weymouth a picking up just shy of four. boston, wellesley, a lot of metro-west, between one and two inches of rain. many towns closer to that, too. in boston itself, 1.48 inches of rain. the wettest day we have had since september 30 of last year. it has been a while since we got a good soaking in the city. certainly, had one yesterday. the rain north and east of us. in its wake. back to the sunshine. and the sunshine is going to last. this isn't, like, hey, we have two inches of rain.

more than 800 people in haiti died as a result of that storm. matthew is now being blamed for at least 19 deaths here in the united states. with the damage stretching across five different states. north carolina, in particular. has been ravaged by floodwaters. >> and that flooding could continue to move inland for another week or more. >> reporter: after a weekend of daring water rescues from the rooftops of homes and cars, men, women, pulled to safety by the thousands. seems matthew saved its devastating and deadliest punch for the end in the u.s. killing some 20 americans, nearly half of those in north carolina. >> it was horrible. >> reporter: deborah narrowly escaped the rising floodwaters. >> we just took everything we could grab. and left. >> reporter: her neighbors were rescued on top of their home. the storm surge swamped ocean-side communities in

upper 50's today. cold night overnight tonight. frost advisory. if not a freeze watch in effect for many folks away from the coastline. but it is a quick warm-up by the time we get into tomorrow afternoon. pushing in the mid-60's away from the immediate coast. near 60 at the coast. the 7-day ahead. >> anchor: all right, thank you. we are covering more news today. lawyers for the plainville woman accused of urging her friend to commit suicide say her statements to police should not be used during her trial. a hearing has been michelle carter is accuseled of manslaughter. prosecutors say she sent text messages to conrad roy telling him to kill himself before he committed suicide back in 2014. cambridge police investigating a death at an m.i.t. frat house. officers were called to the phi kappa theta fraternity on sunday morning. they found a man dead. investigators believe the victim died from an overdose. and there was no foul play. >> kris: heartbreaking story

a highway accident when a man driving the wrong way slammed right into their vehicle. the deadly drive didn't end there. detectives say the man then stole a police cruiser and continued his dangerous drive. >> reporter: charred and mangled metal, all that's left of a vermont police cruiser. five teens were killed. several more injured in this crash. >> this is extremely unusual. to have this many fatalities in one crash. >> reporter: police say this man was dring lane on an interstate when he hit another car. an officer found the car engulfed in flames. that is when police say he stole the cruiser and sped away with the lights still flashing. after running into police, he turned around, headed back toward the initial scene and hit 7 more vehicles before being taken into custody. >>. >> this is difficult for not only the members on the scene, the rescue personnel that responded. fire personnel.

this after the fact. >> kris: tonight there will be a candlelight vigil in harwood, vermont where the five teens attended high school. >> anchor: following a train derailment in new york. the national transportation safety board is investigating an incident that left dozens injured on long island. officials say the commuter train came off the track saturday night after partially colliding with a maintenance train. 33 people were injured. everyone is expected to recover. in flipped in san francisco. 30 people were sent into the water when the boat tipped over on saturday. rescuers were able to successfully save everyone from the frigid water. a little boy was in critical condition and is now expected to be okay. right now crews are searching for that boat. two police officers in palm springs, california shot and killed when they responded to a domestic disturbance this past weekend. the suspect is now facing charges.
