will they be beholden to a party in which 40% of the base believes the president of the united states is illegitimate? >> surely, how do you see this playing out? >> i was in arizona conducting focus groups with donald trump suppeorters and undecided. trump supporters who say they will concede, they say well al gore waited until december. if trump thinks something is off, contest it. they are okay and they see it as fine. they blame the media right now more than they expect a rigged election. they think the media is portraying trump as dead in the water. that is contributing to his demi demise. >> joy, is there a risk that they hear all this and look at the poll numbers and electoral map and get confident? you don't want to spike the ball before the game is over.

clinton. >> elise, joy. thank you for waking up early. you can watch joy's show this morning on msnbc. starts at 10:00 eastern. a huge mystery this morning. federal investigators are trying to figure out just who is behind a series of coordinated cyber attacks. attacking popular web sites you use every day. nbc's gadi schwartz has the latest. good morning. >> stephanie. these attacks are starting to sound something out of a science fiction novel. hijackers connecting devices like dvrs and cameras and baby monitors and launching them into cyber war. the attacks came in three waves taking down a long list of web site giants like twitter, netflix, amazon, paypal and more.

target? hackers aiming at a company called dyn. it acts like an address book and switch board of the internet. this time, hackers deployed the latest weapon in cyber warfare. virus that effects internet devices like dvrs and baby monitors and turns them into cyber bot slaves and using them an overwhelmed and crashes. >> it is unthinkable that a baby monitor could topple twitter. an army of baby monitors can knock over the most important companies in the world. >> reporter: experts say companies are manufacturing weak default passwords making them vulnerable. >> the fact that companies can make hundreds of thousands of devices and put them on the internet and have the product

attack the united states is a problem. >> reporter: so far, there is a lot of speculation on who is to blame. a senior u.s. intelligence official now telling nbc news this is a classic case of internet vandalism. it does not appear to be a state sponsored attack. what is clear, a new weapon has been deployed as companies and countries try to prepare for a possibility of cyber war. experts tell us a lot of the devices used in right now, the department of homeland security and fbi are investigating. stephanie. >> thank you, gadi. testimony resumes in new jersey in the bridgegate trial. the question is did governor chris christie know about the george washington bridge closures? he says he didn't, but during testimony on friday, one former aide insists he did.

with more. >> reporter: good morning, craig. four of the access lanes were shutdown unexpectedly in 2013 causing a nightmare. and a top aide wrote an e-mail and dropped a bombshell. testified that the governor knew what was going on despite his repeated denials. for three years, bridget kelly said nothing until now. the governor chris christie took the stand friday. she testified she had told her former boss about the lane closures one month before it happened. he was fine with it. a direct contradiction to what christie claimed. >> i had no knowledge of it. >> reporter: christie team released this statement friday. the governor had no knowledge

closures. bridget kelly said the port authority director was the mastermind in the issue in 2013. he is now the government's key witness. kelly and defendant bill baroni pleaded not guilty to nine felony counts. she said christie was aware of the e-mail she sent saying time for traffic problems in ft. lee. she said it was a poor choice o not retribution meant to punish a local mayor. christie previously called kelly a rogue and liar. >> it presents the truth as bridget kelly knows it. >> reporter: david walstein was telling christie about the closures on september 11th. as the lane closures were

laughed about it. a man with hoping for higher office now caught in a scandal he may never recover from. now defense attorneys painted kelly as a low-level employee even to please her boss. not in the inner circle as the government alleges. the jury could start deliberating as soon as mid week. craig. >> thank you. we head overseas where secretary of defense ash carter is touching down in iraq as the crews are trying to take back the city of mosul. we have nbc's richard engel innin erbil this morning. >> reporter: he came to meet with the iraqi primary and

battle field update in the campaign to drive isis out of the city of mosul. with every advance, there are more signs of isis brutality and radical intolerance. in the town of mosul, authorities cleared a church desecrated by the militants. they wrote the islamic state or caliphate reigns supreme the cross. that caliphate is shrinking. with the help of u.s. aircraft and jets launched from "uss eisenhower" in the mediterranean. isis is under attack in and around mosul. but finding isis without killing civilians is a challenge. >> bad guys mixed in with families. there are people in the wrong place at the wrong time. none of us wants to kill

ground too. we saw them in combat gear clearing bombs. it is the same job chief petty officer jason finan had. he was killed this week when an ied went off near his vehicle. isis so far is pursuing a dual strategy. fighting to defend mosul and key villages and using terrorist attacks. using a soft target like the city of kirkuk where militants came in yesterday and killed dozens of people. there was a scare today for some u.s. troops that are advising in in this mission. isis, two days ago, set fire to a sulfur plant and the winds shifted bringing some of the fumes close to u.s. troops. out of the sense of personal comfort. some decided to put on protective chemical gear.

determine if the fumes cause any threat, but a military spokesperson told us at this point there has been no change in posture and no reports of hospitalizations. >> richard, thank you. ontario, california is under a smoke alert after firefighters struggle with a massive blaze. a thick black plume rose over the city friday as 100-foot high flames shot from the recycling center. cardboard and plastic bottles fueled the fire. homes and businesses were evacuated. the positive news is no serious injuries. and activists in kansas are warning people to stay out of town to avoid the chemical leak. harmful gas washed over the town friday. 11,000 people were told to shelter in place. more than five dozen treated in hospitals. one person is in intensive care.
